Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

The effect of sulfur dioxide on collectorless and collector induced flotation of chalcopyrite was studied by cyclic voltammetry on a rotating disc electrode. Contact angle measurements were made to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide concentration and electrochemical treatment. The benefits of sulfur dioxide in enhancing the selectivity of separating chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ores are discussed.

The Bituminous Coal Mining Industry of the Federal Republic of Germany produces nearly 100 million t/yr of clean coal. The largest coal mining area is the Ruhr District with dimensions of 100 x 40 km (65 x 25 miles). Figure 1: Here is the general administration of Ruhrkohle Akteingesellschaft RAG with its three divisions. Other coal mining areas in Germany are the Saar District and the Aachen District. Ruhrkohle produces 70 million t/yr of clean coal. The company operates 28 mines in the Ruhr District with an average raw coal production of 18000 t/day. Their average mining depth is 831 m (2740 ft.) and the average seam thickness is 177 cm (70 in.). Figure 2: Preparation plant reject is 44.6%. All following production figures will be with reference to raw coal because the raw coal production is the technically relevant number. Mining operations are mainly in non-dipping coal deposits whereby mechanized equipment for flat seams is also applied to deposits dipping up to 45? Coal extraction is done exclusively by the longwall method. Approximately 200 longwall installations are in production at any time. Heap leach operations provide a low-cost method for recovering gold, silver, and copper metals from low grade ore materials. The processed ore materials are stacked in controlled lifts on a lined pad facility for heap leaching. A controlled barren solution is applied to the heap ore surface by sprinkler or drip emitter irrigation, and ore metals are leached into the solution for collection and extraction in plant process facilities. The leach pad and solution collection facilities are lined with impervious materials for containment of all process solutions. The liner system typically includes a composite geomembrane and clayey soil liner with a protective drain cover fill to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying groundwater conditions. This paper discusses the types of pad liner systems currently used by the mining industry and the "good, bad, and ugly" lessons learned in engineering practice over the last 10 years in the design and construction of heap leach pads.

LKAB's Kiruna mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of the world's largest underground mines, and it is one of the most modern. The Kiruna orebody is a high-grade magnetite containing about 80% low-phosphorous iron ore and about 20% high-phosphorous iron ore in situ. The mining method used is large-scale sublevel caving. Due to the blending of high-phosphorous ore with low-phosphorous ore during the extraction process, only about 20% of the run-of-mine ore can be used for the mine's low-phosphorous product. The blending process is highly irregular and difficult for the mine-planning personnel to predict. An algorithm was developed that uses principles of gravity flow to predict the run-of-mine phosphorous grades from the in situ geologic block model. The model can be used for both long- and short-term predictions.

In recent years, it has been recognized that the high horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to a cutter roof. When the immediate roof is thinly bedded, the presence of a high horizontal stress may first cause failure on the bedding planes or weak planes, and then a cutter roof develops as the individual stratum crushes and buckles progressively layer by layer. In this study, the stress distributions in the bedding planes of the immediate roof are analyzed for an entry-pillar system in the multiple longwall panels by using the finite element method. Then the roof failure is analyzed based on the rock failure criterion and the stress distributions.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. Stoppings are necessary ventilation control devices for effective air distribution underground. However, one of the major problems underground mining has is that every stopping is a potential leaking source. Since air always flows from a point of high pressure to one of lower pressure, and the total pressure at every point in intake airways is higher than that in the return airways, air will always tend to leak from intake to return (Tien, 1996). In many mines, less than half of the air entering the mine actually gets to the working areas; the rest of it simply short-circuits directly to return airways through leaky stoppings instead (Timko and Thimons, 1983). Leakage through a stopping occurs because of pressure drops across the stopping and available leaky path in stoppings. Empirical equation has been widely used to characterize the relation the amount of leakage and variables that affect leakage. However the use of this equation requires accurate information for constants which are not always readily available. It is the attempt of this paper to derive an equation similar to the Atkinson Equation that can readily be applied to characterize pressure-leakage relationship for any given stopping.

In this study, the effect of cations, Na+ and Mg2+, in saline water on copper flotation in the presence of calcium bentonite was investigated. It was found that as the concentration of NaCl was increased, the copper recovery initially decreased and then increased to above 99%, while the copper grade initially increased and then decreased. In contrast, as the concentration ofMgCl2 was increased, the copper recovery continuously increased, while the copper grade continuously decreased. The variation of copper recovery and grade was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of pulp rheology and flotation solution chemistry. The underpinning mechanisms are the compressing electrical double layer and ion-exchange interaction between saline water and bentonite, which occur at the same time. Using salinewater slightly affected the pulp rheologywith a decrease in copper recovery at low NaCl concentration. Increasing the concentration of cations in saline water might even facilitate the flowing out of exchangeable cations, especially divalent cations, from the interlayer space of bentonite to the solution, resulting in the decrease of copper grade at high salt concentration.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. In many underground mines the excavated ore is produced during the blasting process. Drilling machines that are used to drill the blastholes, where later the explosives will be mounted, are crucial for this task. In order to optimize the currently used techniques, great emphasis is placed on increasing the efficiency and safety of blasthole drilling operations. The natural consequence is the development of monitoring systems and algorithms for processing operational and historical data. In this article, we present the result of the analysis of drilling data carried out as part of the IlluMINEation project. The paper proposes an algorithm for work cycle detection for drilling machines, together with the estimation of general operating parameters and diagnosing the drilling process on the basis of long-term data. Based on the available data, selected components of the drilling cycles have been indicated. Several approaches based on the parameters of the defined cycles are proposed. These approaches can be used in the future to create a full-fledged system for examining the effectiveness and safety of mining drilling rigs.

The production of salt through brining operations and the recovery of potash salts by means of solution with water constitute, in large measure, processes which have been used for many years. And although the salt industry has utilized dissolution techniques for years and years it has been only recently that a better understanding of the mechanism of solution has emerged. Greater adaptability of solution mining processes for recovery of valuable salts from ore bodies found at greater and greater depth has resulted in increased adoption of such methods. Because of the high costs of mining in beds of limited thickness, modifications probable when extracting mixed halites, and restrictions (mostly self-imposed) regarding the extent of cavern development to minimize or eliminate subsidence more information is needed on the solution mechanism. It is the purpose of this paper to present the fundamental aspects of the problem of total solution of salts and to point out the developments of certain solution mining techniques.

As part of ongoing deep-ocean mining research, hydraulic transport systems as well as status of deep-ocean mining systems are reviewed in the aspects of manganese nodules and crusts from 800-6,000-m depth. The emphasis of the investigation of hydraulic transport is placed on the shape effect of particles on the pressure gradients and flowrates. Series of tests are being conducted to study the lift characteristics of a 2-phase vertically upward hydraulic transport of 2 types of small solid particles in a PVC pipe of 1-in (2.54 cm) diameter: irregular-shaped silica sands and equivalent spherical glass beads. Pressure drops and mass as well as volumetric flow rates were measured by electromagnetic (EM) flowmeter and mass flowmeter. The particle sizes used are 8-10 mesh. The results in turbulent flow range of 104 < Re < 105 show that pressure gradients or friction factors are smaller for the spherical beads than the sands. The larger the concentration of the particles are, the larger the pressure gradients become. The larger the particle concentration is, the less the effect of particle shape on pressure gradients becomes. The shape effect is greater for the minimum particle transport velocities than for the settling velocities.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of metals from copper industry wastes by sulfuric acid leaching in a semi-continuous, bench-scale system to solubilize arsenic, copper, and molybdenum. Leach residues contained approximately 40 wt pct PbSO4, suitable for processing at a lead smelter. Arsenic and molybdenum removal from leach solution was examined using solvent extraction with tri-n-butyl-phosphate (TBP), and copper was subsequently recovered by cementation. Bleed electrolyte from a copper refinery was determined to be a viable source of acid for the initial leach stage.

"INTRODUCTION The Crossrail project provides an East-West link across London enabling an additional 200 million journeys each year linking up major business centres and existing transportation interchanges, while reducing congestion at street level and within the current underground system. The project has built major structures in Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL), including 5 new stations, 6 crossover caverns and numerous passages, adits and ventilation tunnels. Construction has taken approximately 4 years, and has involved the spraying of over 200,000m3 of concrete. At the start of the project there was a lack of available records from previous projects concerning concrete falls, which hindered risk assessments and the ability to make meaningful comparisons around spraying or material performance. This paper redresses this lack of data by providing information on falls experienced on this project and makes recommendations to assist future projects. Construction Methods Table 1 below summarises the main contracts with elements of permanent SCL. The listed primary lining lengths include pilot tunnels, side drift tunnels and enlargements as separate tunnels.A range of construction sequences were used in order to deal with the design requirements, geometry, and the ground and ground water conditions. The following briefly summarises the build up by layers, with typical design dimensions provided for a platform sized tunnel (approximately 9m internal diameter), excluding tolerance allowances. Some linings were sprayed in more than one layer to allow for inclusion of reinforcement layers or to avoid a too aggressive build-up of thickness: •,Initial shotcrete, or sealing, layer (ISL) of 75mm followed by a Primary Lining (PL) of 300mm. •,Regulating layer of 40mm followed by a Waterproof membrane (Sprayed membrane, 3-6mm). •,Secondary lining (SL) of 250mm with a separate sprayed fire protection layer (FPL) of 50mm."

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ (or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m). processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

Rendering a solid hydrophobic and solid-fluid particle* attachment in flotation are recognized as not necessarily related (1,2). The attachment is governed by forces of attraction and repulsion which need to be considered. The induction time required for attachment after solid and fluid particle are brought into proximity (3-8) illustrates the point. Laskowski(8) showed that a reduced induction time favoured flotation but detected no change in contact angle, a standard indication of solid surface hydrophobicity. Induction .time is observed in fluid-fluid particle coalescence, there being called a rest time (9-11) The induction time phenomenon is related to the presence of a metastable liquid film (disjoining film (2)) of the continuous phase (water in flotation) which must thin and rupture to permit attachment. The lifetime of this film, which is governed by the rate of thinning and the probability of rupture with thicknesss, depends on a complex interaction of forces. Investigating these forces should help clarify the attachment process. Practical benefits would be improved understanding of slimes flotation (12,13) This paper is concerned with the role of the mobile fluid particle-water interface on the film lifetime, in particular, the role of time-dependent or dynamic interfacial properties resulting from deformation of this interface.
