This paper presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange), and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunnelling Package). The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. There are many factors that result in increased professional liability exposure for consulting engineers involved in PPP projects. Linear meridional zones of bad roof conditions have been frequently encountered in producing collieries working the Permian age Lithgow seam in the western coalfield of New South Wales. The prediction of such zones ahead of mining is desirable for reasons of both safety and economics. In March, 1981, we carried out an experimental, three-component in-seam seismic survey at Invincible Colliery to discover whether such zones have any unambiguous seismic effect. The underground survey was the first of its kind to be attempted in an Australian mine. The data quality was excellent with the spectra broadband and clear. Polarisation analysis disclosed two modes: one compressional; the other shear horizontal. The SH model was clearly dispersive and well gound to the plane of the seam. Modal velocities decreased by up to 15% at the fracture-swarm site. There is a strong suggestion on the RLS maps obtained here that the distributed fault zone is acting as a composite scatterer of channel waves. The P-SV and SH wave tomograms obtained show, in a general way, the distribution of stress in the coal panel.

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

The rising costs for and the possibility for limited availability of electrical energy are emphasizing the continual conflict faced in the selection of comminution circuits used in preparing ores for concentration, namely; capital cost vs. operating cost. Frequently, the circuit with the lowest capital cost is not the most efficient in the use of electrical power and wear resistant materials. The simplest circuit in terms of flow, pieces of equipment and capital cost is the single stage autogenous or partial autogenous circuit used to grinding primary crusher discharge or run of mine ore to the desired product size. (Fig. 1) From this circuit, complexity increases to multi-stage crushing circuits preparing feed for multi-stage grinding circuits. Fig. 2 showing a three stage rod mill ball mill arrangement is an example of a complex grinding circuit. Stage concentration further complicates the flow. Multi-stage circuits being the most expensive to install, often give the greatest operating flexibility and offer the best possibilities for the most efficient use of available power and wear resistant materials. Within available grinding circuits, other comparisons such as high speed vs. low speed mills, grate discharge vs. overflow discharge, metal liners vs. rubber liners, high charge vs. low charge, etc. all add to the conflict

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation group is a world leader in mineral processing consulting. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies, which include investigating the effects of drill-and-blast design and implementation on downstream processing. Critical to these studies is the ability to track specific ore into, and through, the plant. To increase the accuracy of this ore tracking, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) developed a system to track ore using a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and, finally, into the concentrator. The system is called SmartTag. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects, and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

In many instances, the actual production from a longwall face does not equal the planned capacity. General problem areas which have been identified include face length and panel depth, face area and gate entry roof support, face conveyor and shearer wear, outby haulage system failures, number of entries in longwall gate development and longwall move time. The performance of a longwall face is totally dependent on the interaction of these and many other factors. To explore fully these interactions, a systems analysis of longwalls has been performed. In this paper, the systems approach, the factors considered in the analysis, and the results of the analysis are presented.

In Europe, novel low-cost excavator-mounted Multi Tool Miner (MTM) systems, consisting of cutter head, hammer, bucket and drill attachments permit one unit to perform multiple tasks replacing several purpose-built machines. At the Weser Tunnel in Germany, cross-passages between the twin tubes were excavated in frozen ground with a remote-controlled mini-excavator equipped with a quick-change cutter head, ripper tooth and bucket. In Switzerland at the N2 interstate near Basel, W. Dietrich AG enlarged a 2-lane tunnel to three lanes with a cutter head mounted on a special excavator. Blasting and heavy hammers were not permitted due to the closeness of the “live” twin tube. At the N20 Zurich bypass, the Joint Venture of Jaeger, Frutingerand AHB excavates highway tunnels, some with extremely large cross sections, conventionally. A cutter head mounted on an excavator removes the rock shattered by blasting precisely to the pay line, thus preserving the rock’s self-supporting capacity preventing subsidence and damages to water resources and buildings on the surface under low overburden.

The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

Three years ago a research program was initiated at the University of Saskatchewan to develop seismic surveying techniques for use in the Precambrian geological environment. The success of the reflection method in many younger geological settings suggested that this is the technique which would be the most suitable for experimentation. A successful adaptation of this technique to the Shield environment would make mapping of rock formations possible to much greater depth than is possible at the present time with any other applied geophysical technique. This presentation attempts to illustrate the advances which have been made in this program and will provide some insight into future plans. The field investigations were limited to the Flin Flon basin near to the town of Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. 1). This area was chosen because the surface geology has been mapped in great detail and it is a very important base metal producing region. It is an ancient sedimentary basin with some characteristics similar to areas where the reflection method has been successful.
