Studies have been carried out to optimize the VCR's mining sys- tem on the basis of synthetic analysis at Fankou Pb-Zn mine in Southern China. The synthetic e- valuation method is proposed for selection of mining alternatives and stope dimension optimization techniques. Theoretic calculation and computer optimization of the fragmentation of rock blasted by multispherical explosive charges are discussed. The mathematical and optimal fragmentation models are built. The optimum model is built for the main mining operations such as drilling, blasting and haulage. Lt can be used to evaluate VCR?s mining projects, select mining parameters and provide design fundations. From the point of view of system research on the geomechanical process, stoping technological process and benefit, the complex method of optimization is proposed for VCR's mining. Using computer simulation, based on this model, the optimal parameters are established and analysed. An effective approach is provided for research on the mining method optimization and getting better economical benefits from the application and improvement of VCR's method.

This paper describes the formulation of mine ventilation network optimization as a standard nonlinear programming problem and the solution of the problem using the generalized reduced gradient (GRG) method. In general, the GRG method is regarded as one of the most effective and efficient methods for solving large-scale nonlinear programming problems. The variables considered in the network optimization include air quantity, regulator pressure loss, and fan pressure for each branch. Each of the variables is constrained by lower and upper bounds. This facilitates proper assignments of ventilation requirements and provides a great flexibility to include various situations encountered in mine ventilation. The objective of the network optimization is to minimize the overall air power consumed by or supplied to the network; whereas the constraints are, in addition to the variable bounds, the two fundamental network laws: Kirchhoffs voltage law and Kirchhoffs current law. A computer program has been developed based on the GRG method for the network optimization. An example of network with 18 branches, 8 regulators and 3 fans is included for illustration.

The first stage of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension Northwest, is a two-track rapid transit extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge, through three stations, to the Alewife Station/Garage complex in North Cambridge. The extension, about 5.0 km. (3.1 miles) in length, is entirely in tunnel, with the Alewife Station/Garage complex and adjacent line sections of tunnel constructed by cut-and-cover methods. The Station/Garage complex, just west of Alewife Brook Parkway, is in an area underlain by deep deposits of very soft highly sensitive clays. It is proposed to construct the station and adjacent tunnel sections by the slurry trench method, using the slurry wall as the permanent structural wall of the station and tunnel. The unusual nature of the underlying clay and its very high sensitivity raised questions concerning the feasibility of the proposed construction. Since research failed to reveal any construction precedent for the specific conditions encountered, a test section was undertaken to determine construction problems, resolve uncertainties, and to establish acceptable parameters for the construction of the slurry walls. PROJECT ORGANIZATION Sverdrup & Parcel as tunnel and transit systems consultant for the Red Line Extension-Davis Square to Alewife had overall responsibility for determining program objectives, project management and test implementation.

INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. It is said that there is nothing new under the sun and this is certainly true about refractory gold Ores. Ores which have been refractory to treatment have been the bane of the Metallurgist's life ever since gold has been recognized as a metal valued for its indestructability, malleability and beauty. Webster's Dictionary defines "Refractory" as; "Resisting control or authority, stubborn, resistant to treatment or cure, unresponsive to stimuli, difficult to corrode or draw out," And gives as a synonym the word "unruly." I don't think any metallurgist would disagree with these definitions as they quite accurately describe refractory gold ores as we know them and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if many of you in this room today had applied far stonger language to your own refractory ores in the course of your metallurgical test programs. Pliny the elder put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D., Gold is the first of man's follies, Silver the second." Perhaps Pliny was speaking of "unassayable gold" or "incipient gold." These are truly refrac tory ores which probably existed before Pliny's time and although many people have claimed to have solved their metallurgy the untold wealth that lies within them has never been bankable. On the other hand, Virgil is his Aenead, could very well have been speaking of refractory ores when he wrote; "Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, auri sacra fames!" which translates as, Accursed thirst for gold! What doest thou not compel mortals to do. Certainly, gold was extremely rare at that time because it had to be recovered by much labor from the then refractory ores and their refractoriness caused the early metallurgists (or alchemists if you will) to seek an easier way to produce it; thus the long and fruitless search for the "philosopher 's stone" which would aid in turn-

To exploit the mineral resources of fine grained ore bodies the minerals processing industry is turning to fine grinding technology, of which tower milling has become an established part. However, compared to other mills relatively little is known about the operating mechanisms in tower mills. In all milling processes one of the keys to understanding how they work is in knowing how their grinding media move. To investigate the ball motion in tower mills a glass unit was therefore constructed and measurements taken of the movement of the grinding media. This paper describes the results from this study.

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self-aspirated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The geometric model is a replica of a 300 m3 cell. A 72-degree sector containing two blades of the ten-blade rotor has been modeled and periodic boundary conditions are applied in the circumferential direction. Simulation of a sector of the machine allows acceptable resolution of the mean flow field using 4x106 grid points. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Unsteady simulations have been performed. In a self-aspirated machine, airflow rate is not known a prior; it is an output from the CFD simulation. Uniform mean bubble diameter of 0.7 mm has been specified as an input for the simulation. Air flow rate and power consumption have been monitored with time, and results indicate a stable operation. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different regions of the machine are presented and discussed.

Thus, it is necessary to not only estimate the expected commodity price at the start of a project but also the manner in which that price is likely to fluctuate throughout the project's life. Recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid is a newly developed source of uranium. Many processes have been developed but the OPAP (octylphenyl acid phosphate) process is still the valuable one because the OPAP reagent compound has the high extraction ,power and cheap cost. The OPAP process was already studied by murthy(1) in 1970 and its complete process flow sheet was first fulfilled by F.T. Hurst(2) in 1974. WCFC(3) (western Co-op Fertilizer Ltd.) in cooperation with ESI (Earth Science Inc.) set up the OPAP uranium recovery pilot plant in Canada in 1978. We have studied the OPAP process since 1974 and first improved the OPAP extractant by proper adjustment of the DOPAP/MOPAP mole ratio with CH3OH-H20 method, resulting in shortening the phase separation time and avoiding the precipitation occurrence in our process. Second, we utilize the reduction and oxidation occurring by DC power supply on either side of the membrane to achieve the extraction and stripping at the same time. An improved OPAP process in which high recovery yield of uranium and acid uncontaminated by iron has been developed in our laboratory.

Rapid coal extraction techniques in gassy mines may strain a ventilation system if a degasification approach is not utilized. Design of mine ventilation systems requires estimates of gas emission rates from unmined coal into the existing mine workings. A degasification system for a specific property can be properly engineered to improve mining economics if the proper geologic and reservoir information is collected. This paper describes methods to determine the degasification rates for horizontal boreholes and vertical (stimulated and unstimulated) wells and the rate of gas emissions into the mine workings. The methodology is demonstrated by a specific example. Horizontal boreholes drilled in advance of mining are demonstrated to be the most effective means of coal seam degasification and reduction of gas emissions into mine workings. The significance of the paper is that few published methods for these estimates are available

Quartz is the second most widely used electronic material, with approximately 3,000 t (3,300 st) of single crystals used each year. Most of the quartz used in electronics is synthetic and is manufactured using a technique called hydrothermal growth. This paper reviews the basics of hydrothermal growth, the feedstocks used for these crystals and the challenges to improving the growth process. This paper also reviews the processing of these crystals, the markets and applications where they are used, and the global outlook for these markets.

The choice between EPB - and Slurry Shields is influenced by the following factors: grain size distribution, cohesiveness, occurence of boulders, occurence of gas, feasibility of soil separation and muck disposal, and settlement properties of the soil. The simple equation cohesive soils = EPB Shields and non cohesive soils = Slurry Shield is very often superimposed by other facts. For example, the occurence of a large amount of boulders in weak cohesive soils, where the application of roller discs is not recommendable, may lead to the use of a Slurry Shield with a rock crusher, thus accepting the disadvantage of a sophisticated separation plant; whereas the occurence of contaminated groundwater or gas may exclude the use of a Slurry Shield. In the following examples the choice of a Slurry Shield or EPBS will be explained and justified with regard of the above factors.

The mineral engineer needs to develop an optimum operating strategy to meet his overall objectives, One would expect that, In the modem era of complex computer models, it would be easy to develop an economic model to maximize profits and/or cash flow. Discussions with mill managers Indicate that one mine/corporation's optimum operating strategy is not necessarily optimum for another. This paper approaches the problems from basics "Economics 101" and Illustrates the complexity of developing a universal model which can be applicable to all mines. Case examples are used to illustrate the need for better communication to avoid the basic economic fallacy “that optimization of segments leads to optimization of the whole system.” TECHNICAL MODELS Technical models are a prerequisite to the development of economic models because they provide the necessary Input data to these models, The flow of material from a mine through the sale of the finished product is shown In Figure 1. The ore Is mined and milled, and the concentrate can be stored for sale or smelted and refined In-house or at a toll facility. The finished product(s) are held In Inventory until sold either through existing contracts or in the spot market. [ ] Fairly reliable technical models have been developed for mining, milling and smelter operations. Mine plans are developed to provide a good Indication of the relationship between production and cut-off grade. It is easier to change surface mine plans than plans for underground mines. However, there are limits to maximum production that can be achieved with existing equipment. It Is possible that mine benches may not be developed to handle additional equipment, even If It was purchased to enhance production. More often than not, the cut-off grade Is lowered to Increase throughput goals.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). This original ropeway had a capacity of 60 t/h (66 stph). With the extension of cement-making capacity in the late 1970s, 2.5 kt/d (2,755 stpd) of limestone was required and a new mono-

INTRODUCTION he most important information required for the engineering design of structures in rock is its inherent rock properties. Without providing adequate parameters on the rock property, high quality of the engineering design cannot be expected. Many laboratory rock testing methods have been developed, but they are mostly for testing intact homogeneous rock without appreciable discontinuities. In reality, the intact rock properties do not represent the behavior of rock masses because rock masses include irregularities such as joints, cracks, interlayers, variations in mineral compositjon, etc. In general the type and intensity of the rock defects may be much more important than the type of rock which will be encountered (Terzaghi, 1977; Bieniawski, 1984). In-situ rock testing can provide better information on rock parameters, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and cost. In recent years, numerical modeling techniques are gaining popularity as a design tool for structures in rock bodies due to the enormous progress in computer technology (Wang, 1985; Kripakov and Melvin, 1983; Park and Ash, 1985), but it is quite dangerous to use numerical techniques without having proper input data. Bieniawski (1984) states as follows: Some design methods such as numerical techniques have outpaced our ability to provide the input data necessary for the application of these methods. In order to provide an adequate amount of input data, an extensive testing program may be required, thus major efforts in time and expenses are commonly spent, In this paper, a new rock testing method, which utilizes the principles of laser holographic interferometry, is introduced. This method requires only a few minutes to measure the modulus of elasticity and quality of a rock core sample, which does not have to be cut or ground. The Poisson's ratio can also be measured in a few minutes from a sliced rock specimen. HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY Principles of Holographic Interferometry In 1948, Gabor invented holography, which is the technique of reviving three dimensional images using a monochromatic light source. A full demonstration was not made then because a clean monochromatic light source was not available. Later, in the early 19601s, the laser was adopted as a monochromatic and coherent light source (Leith and Upatnieks, 1963). Since then, applications have been made in many different fields ranging from crime prevention to three dimensional television. In this technique, an image is usually recorded by means of constructing a hologram which is a record of the interference pattern formed on a high resolution photographic system as shown in Figure I. A beam splitter divides the laser beam into two beams: (1) an object beam which is expanded while passing through a beam expander and illuminates the object, and (2) a reference beam which is expanded and illuminates the holographic plate. Subsequent to an exposure, the holographic plate is developed and illuminated by the expanded reference beam. The original scene of the object is revived in a three-dimensional image. The entire instrument should be placed on a vibration free environment. The wave fields reflected by the object in two slightly different configurations can be superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern. Thus, it is possible to measure the displacement that took place between the two configurations. This method is called holographic interferometrv. There are two methods of achieving this phenomena. The first is the double exposure method, wherein two exposures of the object are made prior to developing the film. The first exposure represents the original condition and the second, the disturbed condition. The second method is the real time holographic method. In

Reasons for reexamining underground mining include: 1. The assurance that more deep deposits of useful minerals will be found. 2. The existence of deeply covered deposits of industrial minerals near large markets where quarries are becoming depleted or are lacking. 3. Surface property values, zoning and other limitations on open pit mining. 4. Expectation that underground space will be increasingly used for transportation, power plants, storage and similar purposes. 5. The improvements which have been made in underground mining. During the last three or four decades many changes and improvements have been made underground. All underground construction and mining has benefitted to some extent but the effect on the productivity of labor employed with some methods- has changed little and the use of these methods has declined. Productivity of labor in other methods has increased substantially. The relative usefulness of mining methods has changed and a vital industry, bituminous coal, has been returned to health. In this paper, consideration is limited to nine methods used with high productivity during the period under review. These methods are not necessarily better than others but they may be considered the prime methods in the sense that, in our economy, many, low grade ores, coal and the principal industrial minerals could hardly be produced by less productive means.2 Although most of the examples cited are from mining as such., the first four methods discussed can be used for the construction of stable excavations of various' shapes in sound rock.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. Two large 34 ½ foot diameter mills have seen seven years of continuous operation before massive fracturing occurred on one of the trunnion cones. These fractures were discovered when liner changes were made. Four modes of failure were identified, three of the modes combining to cause a large circumferential tear in the 4-inch cone plate. A theoretical account is made of the modes of fracture and comparison made with field results. New material was used to repair the fractured cone, and the complete repair took ten weeks. The repair was monitored and lasted twenty-six weeks before the newly designed structure was available.

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. Metro de Caracas that replaced ' the former Office of the Metro. The Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas section, approximately seven kilometers long, consists in part of the 2,951 linear meters of twin-bore
