"The principal role of the geologist is to recognize the existence of phenomena before trying to explain them" - B.M. Keilau, 1825; A. Holmes, 1965 Some important groups of mineral deposits in the layered rocks of orogenic belts or greenstone belts occur in horizons characterized by the presence of exceptional amounts of silica, iron and carbon, with more or less significant amounts of manganese. Generally, the rocks involved are well banded. In practice, these five physical features - four compositional and one geometric - are found with many lithological guises. Iron formation, in the full, modern sense of the term (James, 1954), quartzite, ferruginous quartzite, chert, jasper, "tetsusekiei" (Horikoshi, 1969), tuffaceous jasper ("purple porphyry" - Anderson and Creasey, 1958, p. 36), ferruginous or graphitic shale, argillite, slate or schist, and hematitic tuff are but a few of the more familiar of the names that have been assigned to these rocks. Widely acknowledged and well-documented examples of metallic deposits found in such sediments include concentrations of iron and manganese and stratabound, polymetallic, massive pyritic sulfides. Less familiar examples include occurrences of asbestos (Miles, 1953; and Coetzee, et al., 1976), antimony (Coetzee, 1976), and perhaps stratabound deposits of Au-Cu-U-W-etc., such as Aitik in Sweden (Mining Magazine, 1975; and Nilsson, 1979) and Olympic Dam in South Australia (Roberts and Hudson, 1983). The case of gold is intriguing. An association between gold and iron formation has been identified at several famous deposits and districts, such as Yellowknife, N.W.T. (Morton, 1979), Homestake, S. Dak. (Sawkins and Rye, 1974), Vubachikwe, Zimbabwe (Fripp, 1976) and the Barberton district, R.S.A. (Hammerbeck, 1976). Yet a critical reading reveals the existence of many other hitherto unsuspected examples. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to that omission and the apparent explanation for it. It is not hard to detect the two most probable reasons for the discrepancy between reality and the record.Most occurrences of gold are associated, not with the familiar banded iron formation or interbedded magnetite and chert (technically, the magnetite-banded variety of the oxide facies), but with the enigmatic carbonate, sulfide and silicate facies of iron formation and/or with rocks evidently related to iron formation. All too commonly, the unfamiliar facies of iron formation have been identified by field and mine geologists and not a few researchers as products of regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, as mafic igneous rocks, or as conventional sediments, ie., without regard to their intrinsically ferruginous nature. The justification for these two complementary assertions is largely to be found in the recognition of a characteristic suite of metals and minerals in gold deposits known to be associated with iron formations. Although, from a geological standpoint, a lithological association is more important than a mineralogical assemblage, the latter is the more likely of the two to be diagnostic. This arises from the different natures of mineral and rock classifications, The identification of a mineral or an element is a matter of fact. Owing to the genetic component inseparable from petrographic nomenclature, viz., "igneous": a rock (believed to have been) derived from a melt, the identification of rocks depends on inferences or conclusions about their mode of formation - conclusions that are commonly debatable and, all too often, involve subjective judgements. This is especially prone to be true, if - as at many of the gold occurrences in question - the host rocks have been metamorphosed and/or "altered". In the notes that follow greater weight has accordingly been assigned to elemental and mineralogical than to host rock composition. In other words, if, in a given gold occurrence, the suite of metals and minerals present conforms to the standards of the subject class, whereas the names assigned to host rocks do not, the latter will be viewed as suspect.

Based on the limiting-equilibrium analysis of roof processive caving in hanging wall caving method and the critical medium column theory, a new model of subsidence prediction caused by sublevel caving mining method was proposed in this study, considering the drawing influence and the dynamic process of filling granular media. Meanwhile, the distribution rules for lateral pressure with different orebody dip were studied under drawing ore, and subsequently complemented the model. This model indicated that the surface subsidence scope decreased as the unit weight of crack rock and the orebody dip increased. In addition, the height of critical medium column showed a decreasing trend as cohesion of rock mass, the internal friction angle and the unit weight of rock mass. Also, the method of predicting the scope of surface subsidence in the Dabeishan Iron Mine was applied. The results showed that the relative errors are less than 9% and the prediction method could be used in practical application.

The paper compares shaft dimensions, jet fan placement, and measured airflows, also comparing these measurements to predictions from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

At this 5th U.S. Mine Ventilation Symposium I would like to focus your attention on safety and the contribution of the ventilation engineer over the past 50 years. This conference affords us the opportunity to express, to listen, and to learn. As ventilation engineers it is indeed an exciting time--a time that not only stimulates our imagination but also pin points our aims in our quest to obtain zero fatalities by the year 2000, the goal expressed by William J. Tattersall, Assistant Secretary of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration. In the past, coal mine ventilation has often been unfortunately synonymous with explosions and resulting fires. Those not familiar with us do not recognize the painful evolution of the coal mining industry and particularly the evolution of mine ventilation. To put my presentation into perspective, I recently reviewed a U.S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 586 - "Historical Summary of Coal-Mine Explosions in the United States 1810 - 1958 prepared by H. B. Humphrey Mining Health and Safety Engineer. This bulletin was published in 1960. Mr. Humphrey stated "In 1946, factors contributing to the explosions occurring from 1941 to 1945 were: (1) The rapid increase in the use of electrical equipment at face regions where gas and dust are most likely to be found; (2) the increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost, which in many mines has resulted in neglect of even rudimentary precautionary measures; (3) multiple-shift operation without provision of time for adequate maintenance of equipment, effective rock dusting, and testing for gas; (4) decrease in supervision owing to demands on supervisors for maximum tonnage and loss of competent supervisors to other employment; (5) lack of effective supervision, owing to numerous new conditions, some of them war-connected; (6) inability to obtain adequate equipment repair and replacement parts; (7) shortage of labor and inadequate training of coal-mine workers; and (8) failure of both miners and mining officials to show regard for safety in changing from hand-loading to mechanized methods". Most of the eight factors listed by Mr. Humphrey continue to affect our work lives as mining engineers. The increased demand for coal with the desire to obtain maximum tonnage per machine at minimum cost has never changed. The local and regionalized coal industry of the 40's is today competing against the world coal market. Our mines work or shut down based on cost. This has always been the case. During the five year time-frame Mr. Humphrey was documenting, 345 miners were killed in major explosions. A major explosion was one in which five or more miners were killed in a single accident. In addition, 105 more miners were killed in minor explosions for a total of 450. What a wanton waste of life. What fears, anxieties, miseries, and sufferings were created by these accidents. However, we must remember and keep in mind that the coal mining company officials, engineers, and foremen, the governmental agencies- federal, state, and local - were using the technical tools and knowledge available to operate the mines as safely as they could. Obviously mine ventilation engineering technology was woefully inadequate.

Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. The new treatment must be able to prevent both generalized and localized (pitting) corrosion and overcome the necessity to construct and operate deaerators.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development by Alcan of the Trombetas deposit so a general account of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ (Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on owner-ship, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. It is impossible to consider the Trombetas deposits in isolation. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern portion of the Brazilian Shield is included and it is suggested that these deposits all formed during Tertiary time under similar conditions.

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

Introduction History. Vat leaching operations began in October 1953. Since that time, about 4.2 million tpy of oxide ore averaging 0.72% copper have been treated. Economic conditions, improved operating methods, and increased production facilities have allowed the ore grade to be reduced over the years. The average ore grade was 0.84% Cu during the 1950s, 0.68% in the 1960s, and was 0.50%, or below, during the 1970s. By 1961 some 35 million tons of oxide ore had been removed from the mine, exposing the underlying sulfide ore body. A 5,000¬ tpd concentrator was constructed and put into operation to treat the sulfide ore in November 1961.1 The original crushing plants were used for both oxide and sulfide ores, but by adding a third crushing shift, six days per week, the total ore treated was raised from 12,000¬17,000 tpd. Dwindling oxide ore reserves prompted expansion of the concen¬trator to 13,500 tpd in 19672 so that exhaustion of known reserves of both ores would occur at nearly the same time. Again, no additional crushing facilities were added during the expansion. It was anticipated that the treatment rate of oxide ore would be reduced from 12,000 to about 9,000 tpd. Instead, the addition of two crushing shifts per week and improved operating procedures have increased the treatment rate to 26,500 tpd-13,000 tpd to the leaching plant and 13,500 tpd of sulfide ore treated in the concentrator. Geology. The Yerington ore body is a disseminated porphyry copper deposit where a quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive contains the major part of the ore values, with some copper mineralization found in the adjacent granodiorite and other rocks. The geology of the Yerington Mine was aptly described by J. R. Wilson (Mining Congress Journal, June 1963). The ore body is one of few porphyries where geologic conditions were optimum for the formation of an important concentration of oxidized ore with minimum economic effect of secondary enrichment. The principal mineral in the oxidized zone is chrysocolla, which irreg¬ularly occurs dispersed throughout the rock and as narrow seams along fissures. The grade of the ore in the oxidized zone is generally the same as in the primary sulfide below, although some massive concentrations do occur as vein-like fissures and as filling of breccia zones. Cuprite, tenorite, melaconite, malachite, and azurite occur but are not abundant. Lying between the chrysocolla horizon and the primary sulfide is a transition zone whose limits are irregular but seldom with vertical range exceeding 50 ft. Chalcocite, cuprite, melaconite, native copper, and chrysocolla occur superimposed on the primary sulfides. Chalcocite replacement of chalcopyrite, as well as secondary chalcocite, do occur. The primary sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite and pyrite, with minor amounts of bornite and covellite. There are no appreciable gold or silver values, and molybdenite has rarely been noted.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

"Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems (VTS). To investigate flow effects under realistic conditions, especially clogging effects, a 136 m high test facility for flow analysis in vertical transport has been constructed using available mining infrastructure. Tests are run in a closed circuit, using a system of downfall and riser pipelines connected to a compact sediment injection- and separation unit as well as the centrifugal pump. The riser is equipped with pressure sensors, as well as temperature sensors, flow meter, concentration meter and high speed camera to allow comprehensive analyses of the flow regime and behavior of transported material within the flow. Additional mobile measurement devices allow wear and tear analyses of pipe material. This paper focuses on the determining factors of the tests leading to the design as well as the installation and trial of the test facility itself and explains the used components and work principles. INTRODUCTION Since the 1970s several research projects had been conducted investigating in the possibility of deep sea mining. In recent times projects for deep sea mining operations have started again, considering the rising demand on natural resources, especially raw earth elements. Yet projects like the Nautilus project on the deposit Solwara 1 [1], or Japanese projects focusing on the region of Okinawa [2] and Chinese projects [3] planning on depths of “only” about 2,500 up to 3,000 m. Until now no economical deep sea mining project was realized, due to the enormous difficulties of deep sea environments. Vertical material transport is one of the major challenges for the successful implementation of deep sea mining projects, considering transportation heights up to 5 km. The EU research project „Blue Mining” is focusing on sustainable solutions for deep sea mining operations, with one major goal being the advancement of Vertical Transport Systems or VTS [4]. Critical parts of the system would be identified and investigated to deliver solutions and higher the technology readiness level to a level were planning of a pilot project can be considered. At first case examples for mining projects of seafloor massive sulfides (SMS, 1,600 m water depth) and manganese nodules (MnN, 5,000 m water depth) had been calculated on basis of economical frame conditions, such as planned production rates to be efficient. As depicted in Figure 1 two major possible systems had been used for comparison, airlift system and pump system, considering multiple pump stations or single pumps. Based on the results and comparisons for the calculated vertical transport systems critical components and flow effects had been identified."

The application of gob-side entry retaining (GER) in steeply pitching seam longwall mining with a hard roof has always been a difficult problem. Based on the simplified roof beam mechanical model, the traditional gob-side entry retaining by packing (GERP) roof structure evolution process and its problems with use in steeply pitching seams are analyzed. Therefore, based on the unique characteristics of the gangue rolling and accumulating in the steeply pitching seam, this contribution proposes an innovative method of gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) in steeply pitching seam and details its technical process. The roof structures of the GERRC and the GERP are compared. Taking the Chang Gouyu Coal Mine as a case study, field experiments were carried out. This research finds that the GERRC can both overcome the impact of rolling gangue on roadside support and make the rolling and stacking gangue become a roadside support. The roof structure of the GERRC is in a one-time statically indeterminate state, which is conducive to the stability of the roadway. In the field test, the total displacement of the roadway roof and floor is 97 mm, the supporting pressure of the serried single props is less than 28 MPa, and the props have no obvious bending phenomenon.

Principal component analysis (PCA) is one of the dimension reduction techniques widely used to classify data based on features. Ground vibration is a major hazard arising from rock blasting operations, and accurate prediction of the vibration is necessary for designing controlled blasting parameters. Most of the widely accepted predictors of ground vibration consider the maximum explosive charge weight per delay (MCPD) and distance as the parameters responsible for ground vibration, but mining sites with bigger production targets have varying geometrical parameters to suit the excavator utility. Accordingly, other blast design parameters will also have impacts on ground-vibration intensity. A blast vibration predictor considering all the blast design parameters would be complicated, and some of the parameters will have overlapping contributions to ground-vibration intensity. Data classification using PCA is a feasible solution, and regression analysis may be performed to develop predictors using the classified input data. In this study, PCA was used along with multivariate logarithmic regression to predict ground vibration, and the performance of this technique to predict ground vibration was compared with the performances of various existing empirical predictors. The evaluation suggests that the predictor with logarithmic regression followed by PCA performs better than the existing empirical predictors.

Open-source technology to support Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviews the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study of the use of open-source hardware and software in the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for nonmetallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device, and open-source software, MIT App Inventor, to develop an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a nonmetallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors.

A statistically designed pot grate- kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables, bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate, were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a pl ant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire Plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets

"The “Reiche Zeche” mine in Freiberg, Germany, a 600-year-old lead-zinc-silver mine with extensive open mine workings, experiences severe ventilation losses due to leakage. Much air leaks into abandoned workings, decreasing the airflow available to active working areas. Usually, this leakage occurs in remote areas that lack transportation infrastructure like roadways or rail, making it difficult to haul construction materials to the sites to erect passive ventilation controls such as stoppings, regulators and seals. Transportation distances make it impractical to hand carry traditional construction materials, such as bricks and concrete. Alternative materials, such as brattice, foaming polymers, concrete canvas, and some innovative ventilation control designs have been investigated for this purpose. The suitability of the materials investigated depends on many factors including the pressure it can withstand, the ease of transportation, and workability. Impacts of mine water must be considered, as the Reiche Zeche is below drainage and experiences significant inflow of water. Researchers must consider the effects water inundation as well as how the stopping construction material reacts to being exposed to acidic mine water. INTRODUCTION Problem Statement Mining in the area around Freiberg, Germany began in the 12th century. The mine is used for research, mining engineering education, tourism and air conditioning for a local hospital. The first records of mining in the Reiche Zeche are from around 1384. Due to the strength and competency of the host rock, many of the oldest workings still stand and remain open today, although they may not be accessible. Reiche Zeche also connects to several other, closed mines in the area that are largely unmapped. This allows air to leak into neighboring mines, reducing the air available to ventilate to the working areas of Reiche Zeche. In order to improve ventilation efficiency, it is necessary to control the ventilation and reduce leakage by constructing seals, stoppings and regulators. A challenge with building traditional seals and stoppings in the Reiche Zeche is that the old workings lack transportation pathways or rails. Also, the lack of compressed air, water or electricity makes it difficult to operate power tools and drills. This means that construction materials must be hand carried – some over distances of several kilometers. Figure 1 shows a typical drift in the Reiche Zeche. Researchers investigated using lighter, more easily transportable materials including concrete canvas, expanding polyurethane and polyurea foams, and brattice. The applicability and utility of these materials depends on a variety of factors including the ventilation air pressure, chemical resistance to acidic and mineral-laden mine waters, ease of transport, and ease of construction. Stoppings and seals must be substantially constructed so that they remain tight and do not require maintenance. It is also important to consider the toxicity of the construction materials in case of a mine fire."

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation' or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

The recent surge in demand for uranium in the United States, accompanied by a significant increase in price, has resulted in exploration, mining, and milling of lower grade ores than have been exploited in the past. To sustain production levels of uranium with lower grades of feed requires larger tonnage mill operations. Also, because of recent environmental regulations, mill operations must be prepared to properly contain large tonnages of tailings, and recycle, treat and discharge, or evaporate mill effluents. Thus, the advent of lower grade ores, larger tonnage mills, and environmental considerations has made the cost of milling a critical factor in today's uranium production economics in the United States. Three basic milling methods are employed for extracting uranium from ores: 1. Acid leach, countercurrent decantation, and solvent extraction. 2. Acid leach, resin-in-pulp, and Eluex. 3. Alkaline leach, solid-liquor separation, and precipitation. Vanadium often occurs as a valuable by-product in ore deposits located in the Uravan mineral belt in Western Colorado. Also, lesser amounts of vanadium may occur in ores from South Dakota, New Mexico, and Utah. Vanadium is usually extracted in the acid leach solution with uranium and recovered by solvent extraction after recovery of the uranium. By-product recovery of uranium from phosphoric acid and porphyry copper dump leach solutions is now receiving considerable attention. Pilot plant studies are under way and construction of commercial plants is in progress.

1. INTRODUCTION In this section, precious metals are defined as gold, silver, and the platinum group metals comprised of platinum, palladium, iridium, osmium, and rhodium. If the first three years of the 1970's are the criteria, gold, silver, and platinum seem destined for a bright future. Gold advanced in price from the historic figure of $35 established in 1934 to over $100 per oz (1973). For the five years 1966 to 1970, silver consumption exceeded production by about 50%. The silver price appears to be definitely on the uptrend, and a price of over $3 per oz seems probable. On this basis (at 1964 costs) the United States has an estimated 5 billion oz of unmined silver. The fresh burst of interest in platinum with a surge of renewed price strength (end of 1972) is due to the activity in the automobile emission control area, where platinum re¬mains the front runner in the catalyst area. Some international financial experts believe that governments will not rush into reform of the monetary system, and "Special Drawing Rights" (SDR's) will gain increased standing as international mone¬tary reserve assets. Gold will continue to be reviewed as the ultimate store of value and will remain the global monetary base. Devaluation of the U.S. dollar caused by imbalance of import payments over ex¬ports is the basic reason that the price of gold will likely remain above the $90 per oz figure for the balance of the 1970's. Gold and silver usually occur intimately associated, and recovery methods are often closely related; however, they were assigned sepa¬rate chapters, because the major production of each metal is from ore deposits classified as either gold or silver. For example, the gold ore occurrences in South Africa, the world's leading gold producer, have a ratio of gold to silver of approximately 10 to 1. The ores at the Homestake Mine, Lead, S.D., the largest U.S. gold producer, are predominantly gold with a ratio to silver of approximately 5 to 1. Silver in each example is a byproduct. By this same classification, the largest U.S. silver producers are the silver ores of the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. However, the largest single-mine silver producer in the Free World is the Kidd Creek Mine at Timmins, Ont., where the occurrence is with sulfides of copper, lead, and zinc. Thus, the major gold production of the world is derived from those ores classified as gold ores; whereas, less than one-half of the silver production is from silver ores, and only a small percentage of the silver production is from gold ores. 2. GOLD Gold, the noblest of metals, has been mined for thousands of years. Its chemical symbol, Au, is derived from the Latin "aurum," meaning "shining dawn." A precious substance because it is one of the rarest metals, it has unique physical properties: it does not tarnish; it exceeds all other metals or alloys in malleability and ductility; it is a good conductor of electricity and is one of the most nonreactive metals. Its greatest strength is its indestructibility. It is the only metal mined at depths exceeding 10,000 ft. Since the early 1800s, its chief role has been as a medium of exchange, providing the basis for interna¬tional trade. In the past 15 years, however, gold has emerged as a useful industrial commodity. This role has been fortified by the estab¬lishment of a two-tier pricing system which maintains monetary gold prices at an established U.S. Government price, with industrial gold being priced higher by the free-market system. Occurrences and Production Native gold furnishes most of the world's production, since gold forms stable natural compounds with few other elements. Neverthe¬less, the metal is widespread with traces of it found in seawater and in the ashes of plants and animal material. Next to the native metal, the tellurides have been the most important gold-bearing minerals; these include calaverite, krennerite, slyvanite, hessite, and nagyagite. Native gold is invariably alloyed with more or less silver, but it is exceptional to find any other metal in the alloy. It is found in veins associated with quartz, calcite, alunite, other gangue minerals, and with various sulfides. Sulfide minerals in order of frequent associa¬tion are: pyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, tetrahe¬drite, and pyrrhotite. Small amounts of metallic gold are commonly disseminated through such sulfides. When considerable amounts of silver occur in gold, the mineral electrum is formed. In a few deposits, gold and mercury form natural amalgam. Native mercury is formed by weathering from cinnabar and other mercury minerals. Among the minerals sometimes mistaken for gold, pyrite, marcasite, and especially chalcopyrite may be men¬tioned. The flakes of biotite and other micas, especially when partially oxidized, also may imitate it closely. World gold reserves never have been estimated carefully. Esti¬mates indicate that present world reserves approximate I billion oz, of which about 60% occurs in South Africa and 20% in the USSR. World gold output is dominated by South Africa which produces two-thirds of the world's production from reserves that are adequate to maintain existing output levels. South African gold output comes from approximately 50 large underground operations that mine and mill 70 to 80 million tons of ore annually to recover 30 to 32 million oz of gold. The USSR is the second largest gold producer, followed by Canada and the United States (see Table 1). Gold production in the United States and Canada rose to high levels in the 1930's, following the increase in price from $20.67 to $35 per oz and with an abundance of good labor due to depression in other industries. Production of over 10 million oz in 1940 was behind only that of South Africa. World War II caused a precipitous drop in gold output due to the imposition of War Production Board Limitation Order L-208 issued in October 1942, which caused over 9,000 gold mines in the United States to shut down, most of which never reopened. The U.S. Treasury, which suspended purchases of newly mined gold in 1968, had been the sole buyer of U.S. produced gold since 1934. This created the two-tier pricing system, and in March 1972 the President signed into law a bill authorizing a $3 increase in the official price of gold to $38 per oz. In February 1973 the President ordered a second devaluation of the dollar, amounting to about 10% which raised the official price to $42.22 per oz. There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam which averages 42 inches (1.07m) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is approximately 3.5 million gallons of water per day (13.25 million liters per day). This water deteriorates the mines predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 6 ton (5443 kg) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track over four miles (6437m) co the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.
