Ever since the early '60's there have been efforts to develop and produce reliable continuous haulage systems capable of taking the full output of a continuous miner and transporting it, in one continuous flow, from the face to the tipple. The majority of the continuous haulage systems which have been most successful to date were placed in operation in the early '70's and were all of the bridge conveyor type, usually consisting of bridges and mobile bridge carriers attached at the inby end to the continuous miner and at the outby end to the panel conveyor itself. These successful bridge conveyor type continuous haulage systems were, and continue to be, either of the belted or chain type. Undoubtedly, the most successful belt type continuous haulage systems are those manufactured and marketed by the Long-Airdox Company. Until early 1977, the most successful chain conveyor type haulage systems were manufactured and marketed by Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division. In 1977, Long-Airdox reentered the market with a chain type system to complement its belted system. I say "reentered" because the original bridge type continuous haulage system was introduced to the coal mining industry in the early '60's by the old Long Company, a predecessor of the current Long-Airdox Company, and those original units were of the chain conveyor type.

Previous studies on blast fumes (carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide) clearance and workplace reentry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases trapped in the muck pile. The currently available models for calculating the mine reentry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However, recent studies reported that as much as 60 to 70% [1–5] of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting could remain trapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muck pile. Trapped fumes are slowly released [1–5], and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the loading and transportation of the muck pile. In this study, mathematical models were developed using computational fluid dynamics to understand the behavior of the trapped fumes and their effect on mine reentry time. The three scenarios considered for this study include (i) gas emission source with no muck pile volume, (ii) gas emission source with non-porous muck pile volume, and (iii) gas emission source with porous muck pile volume. The estimated reentry times in all three scenarios were compared to see how porous media affects dilution time. It was observed that scenario 3, with fumes trapped in the muck pile, took a significantly longer clearance time (more than double) as compared to scenarios 1 and 2.

Long tunnels with only one access shaft pose many program problems for logistics, combine these with the requirement to drive directly out under the seabed for 10.2 km, and the program issues become even more challenging. The Musaimeer outfall tunnel was one such tunnel and to meet and eventually improve on the planned completion date required a complex and extensive management of all tunnel logistics required to support consistent tunneling for a two-year period. This technical paper will discuss the management issues and solutions implemented to meet the challenges of the Outfall tunnel construction.

Traditionally, molybdenum and vanadium have been used chiefly as alloy metals in steel. They impart similar characteristics to most steels, and to some extent one can be substituted for the other. In the United States during the 1950's the production of steel increased about 5 percent, and the reported consumption of both of these alloy metals in steel increased some 40 percent. In Europe during the 1950's the production of steel in¬creased nearly 100 percent. Data on the actual consumption of these alloy metals in European steels are not available, but production and trade records show that the European supplies of molybdenum increased about 150 percent and those of vanadium about 350 percent during the 1950's. If most of the molybdenum supplies in Europe are being added to steel, as seems likely, then the European steel industry has nearly caught up with the United State in the rate of consumption of molybdenum in steel. The vanadium supplies, on the other hand, are puzzling--unless Europe is adding mach more vanadium to steel than is done in the United States, it seems reasonable to assume that other uses are consuming moderately large quantities of this metal or that appreciable amounts of it are being transshipped from Europe. To the extent that a changing volume of supply signifies a changing pattern of use, the increased demand for molybdenum and vanadium in Europe should be of interest to domestic producers and consumers of these metals.

This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

The Huari-Huari ore body is located in Southern Bolivia, at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters above sea level. The ore is a complex massive sulfide, slightly marmatitic sphalerite, in a fault fissure filled hypo- thermal vein in Paleozoic shales and quartzite-altered sandstone. The sphalerite has common associations with pyrite and quartz and is frequently intricately intergrown with stannite, chalcopyrite, and pyrrhotite. The sphalerite also contains numerous inclusions of pyrite, marcasite, galena, boulangerite, jamesonite, quartz, arsenopyrite, and cassiterite. A research program was undertaken to develop a flowsheet for the recovery of separate silver, zinc, and tin concentrates by selective flotation. Based on this experimental work and subsequent flowsheet development, engineering and construction of a 500 metric ton per day concentrator was undertaken. This paper describes the process that was developed for the Huari-Huari ore and the unique aspects of the Huari-Huari concentrator.

A NIOSH study on occupational deaths between 1980 and 1989 indicated that in the United States, mining had the highest average annual fatality rate (3 1.9 per 100,000 workers) of any other major industry. Since "lack of training" was often cited as the primary cause of accidents, NIOSH has been investigating new methods for effective training. One such method is the use of low- cost, desktop computers to simulate a virtual mining environment. Computer-based training offers several advantages over conventional training because the computer programs provide a three- dimensional environment that allows the trainee to practice using evacuation routes, encounter mining hazards, and view mining operations without being exposed to any real danger. One major focus of the project is mine escapeway multiuser training using desktop virtual reality programs. Researchers have imported mine maps into the software for the purpose of practicing actual evacuation routes and procedures. Various scenarios for evacuation can be practiced in a three-dimensional computer simulation of the mine in a disaster situation, complete with smoke, fire, and other dangers. Depending on the trainee's job description (i.e., foreman, shift boss, beltman, etc.), certain tasks need to be performed in addition to navigating primary and/or secondary escape routes. Each scenario allows for individual or team-based training and provides a means to educate mine workers in hazard recognition and hazard avoidance. Using this program, mine workers can practice evacuating various mine layouts without the danger and expense associated with escapeway training in an actual underground mine. Each scenario can be changed to test the trainee's reaction in a variety of circumstances and run many times so the trainee can practice concepts. This training experience will help reinforce the knowledge acquired during more conventional classroom instruction, and the inherent flexibility of the program allows training materials to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual mines.

In June 1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published the 'Report of the Coal Mine Respirable Dust Task Group; Review of the Program to Control Respirable Coal Mine Dust in the United States." As one of its recommendations, the report called for the accelerated development of two mine dust monitors: (1) a fixed-site monitor capable of providing continuous information on dust levels to the miner, mine operator, and to MSHA, if necessary, and (2) a personal sampling device capable of providing both a short-term personal exposure measurement as well as a full-shift measurement. In response to this recommendation, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Center, initiated the development of a fixed-site machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor. The technology chosen for monitor development is the Rupprecht and Patashnick Co., Inc. tapered element oscillating microbalance. Laboratory and in- mine tests have indicated that, with modification, this sensor can meet the humidity and vibration requirements for underground coal mine use. NIOSH is continuing that effort by developing prototypes of a continuous dust monitor based on this technology. These prototypes are being evaluated in underground coal mines as they become available. This effort, conducted as a joint venture with MSHA, is nearing completion with every promise of success. The immediate benefit of this effort will be to researchers, regulatory personnel, and mine personnel, by permitting evaluation of specific mining practices to see which expose mine workers to excessive dust levels. Using this information, mine personnel can optimize mining procedures to reduce dust exposure. MSHA and the operators will also be able to use the dust concentration data to judge whether dust plan parameters are adequate to continuously maintaining environmental dust levels below the applicable standard. The second development recommended by the Dust Task Group was a person-wearable version of the continuous dust monitor. It will be a monitoring system designed to provide a measurement of worker exposure to respirable dust, both during and at the end of the shift.

Methods to determine frother functions, control of bubble size and froth properties, are now widely used. Some collectors also exhibit frother functions which are less understood. Using a water-air system in a mini-mechanical flotation cell setup, this paper determines bubble size and water overflow rate for three amine collectors: one primary amine (dodecylamine, DDA) and two commercial ether amines (Flotigam® EDA and Flotigam® 2835-2L) and their combination with two common frothers, MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) and PPG 425 (polypropylene glycol, molecule weight 425). Compared to the frothers, the amines were less effective in reducing bubble size, giving larger minimum size and the two commercial amines showed evidence of coalescence at low concentration. In blends, at fixed frother dosage, frother eliminated the coalescence but as amine concentration increased the amines dominated bubble size. Water overflow was a strong function of reagent type. For fixed 1-cm froth depth, PPG 425, Flotigam® 2835-2L and to a lesser extent DDA produced overflow while MIBC and Flotigam® EDA did not. In blends with frother overflow increased except with Flotigam® EDA. Mechanisms are briefly explored. The principal benefit of blending identified is the elimination of coalescence if residual concentration of the two commercial amines is below ca. 10 ppm.

Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

The state of the lithium mineral industry is closely linked to the performance of the glass and ceramic industries and to the overall economy. Demand for the glass/ceramic products in Europe, Asia and North America remained strong during 1999. This was due to a slight improvement in the economy during the latter half of the year. Consequently, demand for lithium minerals was firm, with a positive outlook. The major economic minerals for lithium are spodumene, petalite and lepidolite. The latter was once the primary mineral. But its importance hasdeclined since the 1960s. The lithium industry consists of two different segments: •The lithium minerals segment mines from hard-rock deposits and physically processes the material to high-grade concentrates. •The lithium chemicals and metal industry segment. The major feedstock for specialty lithium chemicals was previously high-grade spodumene ore converted to lithium carbonate. However, most lithium carbonate is now sourced from salars in North and South America.

"The 13.2 m (43 ft) external diameter, double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km (3.1 mile) tunnel consists of a 3.4-km (2.2-mile) tunnel boring machine- (TBM) bored tunnel, 1 km (0.62 mile) twin NATM tunnels and cut-and-cover sections. The project is being delivered in a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of independent design verification. The project was opened to traffic on December 20, 2016, four months ahead of schedule.. This article presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects..Project backgroundThe $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The project improves connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduces congestion and saves motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region. It eases traffic across the strait, reduces congestion, decreases pollutants and emission while maintaining Bosphorus. It is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km (3.6 miles) long consisting of 3.4 km (2.2 miles) of 13.2 m ( 43.3 ft) external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km (0.62-miles) of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut-and-cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

Roll crushers had been used in the past ahead of existing milling systems in order to obtain additional production from such mills in both the mining and the cement industries. Historically, a roll crusher as a preliminator to a ball mill has been used for a number of industrial mineral applications. Flowsheets, from Taggars(1) show systems for fluorspar, graphite, lead and zinc to name a few, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4. These units applied, (in some cases still in service), prior to 1950 and as early as the 1920's, were of two general types, rigid rolls and spring rolls. The rigid rolls were phased out in favor of the spring rolls. The spring force related to the linear inch width of the rolls, ranged from 500 to 50,000 lbs/linear inch(1) on units up to 90" diameter. With choke feeding, the rolls were spread against the spring force during crushing keeping the system under high pressure to obtain high effectiveness.

This presentation will be a general overview of the Cerrejon Coal Project being developed jointly by Carbocol, an entity of the Colombian government, and Intercor, an Exxon affiliate. The word "Cerrajon", by the way, is simply Spanish for a small hill. There is a distinctive hill near the mine site, and it's the only landmark of any significance. It's shown in Figure 1. So the locals call this area "El Cerrejon", "the little hill." Let me start with some of the highlights of the project, summarized in Figure 2, and then go into more detail later. A four-year feasibility study covered the geology, quality, engineering, construction operation and marketing of coal from this region. This study led Exxon to declare the project as commercial in July of 1980. Then in September of 1980 the president of Colombia gave the government's okay to proceed.

Virtually all structures show some signs of distress due to deterioration of the building components, to changed loads, or to changed support conditions. Changed support conditions result from ground movements. In mining regions many cases of structural distress are attributed to mining without considering alternative causes. This is particularly true of coal mining since it occurs under extensive areas. Coal mining is estimated to have already undermined more than eight million acres and may eventually undermine 40 million acres in the United States (HRB Singer, Inc., 1977). Other nonmetal and metal underground mines impact much smaller areas. Although it is sometimes difficult, even with careful study, to identify the actual cause of damage, persons responsible for underground coal mining should at least be aware of possible causes of building stress other than mine subsidence. Nearly every community in the United States is dependent on aggregate (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) resources to build and maintain its infrastructure. Unfortunately, developing aggregate resources to meet societal needs causes environmental impacts. Most environmental impacts associated with aggregate mining are benign. Extracting aggregate seldom produces acid mine drainage or other toxic effects commonly associated with mining of metallic or energy resources. The most obvious environmental impact of aggregate mining is the conversion of land use, most likely from undeveloped or agricultural land use, to a hole in the ground. This major impact is accompanied by loss of habitat, noise, dust, blasting effects, erosion, sedimentation, and changes to the visual scene. Some of the impacts are short-lived, and most are easy to predict and easy to observe. Most impacts can be controlled, mitigated, or kept at tolerable levels and can be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the aggregate operation by employing responsible operating practices and available technology. The intensity of environmental impacts generated as a result of mining are determined in large part by the geologic characteristics of aggregate deposits (geomorphology, geometry, and physical and chemical properties). Mining deposits that are too thin, or contain too much unsuitable material, results in the generation of excessively large mined areas and large amounts of waste material. Mining aggregate can lead to serious environmental impacts in some situations. Some geologic environments such as active stream channels, slide-prone areas, and karst terrain are dynamic and respond rapidly to outside stimuli including aggregate mining. Some geomorphic areas and (or) ecosystems underlain with aggregate serve as habitat for rare or endangered species. Similarly, some geomorphic features are themselves rare examples of geologic phenomena or processes. Mining aggregate might be acceptable in some of these areas, but should be conducted only after careful consideration, and then only with extreme prudence. Failure to do so can lead to serious, long-lasting, and irreversible environmental consequences, either in the vicinity of the site or at locations distant from the site. Environmental impacts caused by irresponsible aggregate mining can compromise mining in an entire region.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.

To facilitate effective land reclamation and comply with existing state regulations, surface coal mine operators have in recent years adopted new mining techniques and equipment utilization for steep-terrain mining. In contrast to direct spoiling with draglines or shovels, these new mining methods require some form of overburden haulage from the excavation face to the point of reclamation. Although current mining methodologies such as Block-Cut, Modified Block-Cut, and Mountaintop Removal with Head-of-Hollow Fills have proven effective in achieving reclamation objectives, some production problems have resulted from pit congestion and excessive equipment delays. Recognizing this problem, the United States Bureau of Mines contracted Skelly and Loy to design innovative mining concepts utilizing conveyor haulage in place of trucks, loaders, dozers and scrapers. Project objectives required definition of current bottlenecks and development of mining systems to: alleviate bottlenecks; increase production potential; facilitate additional resource recovery; enhance reclamation; reduce safety hazards; and improve mining economics. Successful completion of project goals within a four year program involves systematic implementation of the following separate work phases: 1) Develop Concepts for Block-Cut Mining Systems; 2) Determine the Economic and Technical Feasibility of Concepts; 3) Prepare Detailed Design and Specifications of Concepts; and 4) Prepare Specifications for Conducting Field Tests of the Most Promising Concepts. At the time of this publication, Phases 1 and 2 are finalized with Phase 3 efforts well underway.
