In 2002 the Freeport-McMoRan Technology Center undertook research to develop a lower-cost alternative to guar for cathode smoothing in copper electrowinning. The work was conducted at the Technology Center?s SXEW Test Facility located in Morenci, Arizona. Bench-scale copper electrowinning cells were designed and implemented to screen a number of potential polymers for cathode smoothing. These included modified polysaccharide polymers that were nonionic, cationic, and anionic in nature.

Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

Chlorite veins in the Silver Star district (40 km southeast of Butte) were of little interest to those who were mining gold and silver in the late 19th century. It wasn't until 1975 that unusually pure magnesian chlorite of the variety clinochlore was identified from a ?talc? claim in this district. In 1977 tests by Cyprus Industrial Minerals showed that this chlorite was suitable for use in ceramics. Mining begun in that year continues. These replacement veins of chlorite in Precambrian quartzofeldspathic gneiss differ from the metalliferous veins to the northwest in both attitude and mineralogy.

As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

Mina Santa Rosa, in west central Panama, is the first large-scale gold mine in Panama and will soon be the largest single-mine gold producer in central America (Fig. 1). At full production, the mine will process 1.8 Mt/a (2 million stpy) of ore and produce more than 1.8 t/a (60,000 oz/year) of gold and 9.3 t/a(300,000 oz/year) of silver. Mina Santa Rosa is a subsidiary of Greenstone Resources of Toronto, Ontario. Freeport-McMoRan geologists first visited the area in 1985. Their rock chip sampling adjacent to old shafts and adits confirmed widespread gold and trace element geochemistry anomalies. Surface mineralization appeared to be localized in and adjacent to narrow veinlets. However, they recognized astructural setting similar to the Nevada Tertiary volcanic-hosted epithermal gold systems.

A promising and increasingly popular tailings management strategy is to place cemented tailings underground as backfill. The placement of cemented tailings results in enhanced geotechnical stability and a purportedly more geochemically stable tailings form with lower leaching potential. Conventional subaerial tailings management can negatively affect water quality if weathering causes acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML) to occur, whereas cemented tailings can limit leaching via porosity and permeability reductions and contribute alkalinity to limit the potential for ARD/ML. Cemented tailings backfill appears to be better, but how can this advantage be proven? Currently, cemented tailings backfill is utilized at mining operations internationally, but there is limited guidance on performing geochemical characterization and associated evaluation of the potential impacts to water quality. As a result, various approaches to simulating the leaching behavior of cemented backfill have been utilized, including some methods that are unlikely to represent weathering under site-relevant conditions. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method C1308-08 is a diffusion testing method initially developed to assess constituent release rates from solid nuclear waste forms. ASTM C1308-08 uses intact cylinders that more closely represent actual backfill than methods that require crushing or size reduction. It is widely believed that leaching from actual cemented tailings is controlled by diffusion through small pores that exhibit limited exposed surface area, making diffusion testing particularly applicable to cemented tailings placement.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

Bench-scale beneficiation studies were made on Idaho dolomitic phosphate rock using the TVA carbonate flotation process. The process employed diphosphonic acid as a phosphate mineral depressant and fatty acid as a carbonate mineral collector. Silica was subsequently rejected as float using an amine collector, with phosphate product recovered as the sink fraction. Two samples of prepared flotation feed from commercial operation were used; one contained 21% P205 and 3.2% MgO, and the other contained 26% P205 and 1.8% MgO. The results indicate that concentrates containing 31-33% P205 and 1% or less MgO can be obtained, with P205 recovery of about 80%.

A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

This paper presents an innovative ground support solution developed to construct a tunnel cross-passage for the MUNI Metro Turnback (MMT) Project. A “soft center” jet grouting approach was designed to provide solid ground support while maintaining a soft center to allow for hand-mining of a 2.44 m (8 ft.) wide, 3.66 m (12 ft.) tall and 4.6 m (15 ft.) long cross-passage through soft Bay Mud. Prohibitive costs and schedule impacts associated with mining under compressed air (at the time being used for main tunnel construction) were the catalysts to search for alternative methods for cross-passage construction. Limited surface disruption, relatively low costs, ease of subsequent excavation, nominal schedule impacts and proven local success of jet grouting were key factors in selecting and designing this method of ground support.

The Yarnell gold depoSit, located in the Weaver mining district of Yavapai County, Arizona is found within a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone that occurs within a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rock that occur around and above the low-angle northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization; a wider envelope of weakly-propylitic alterred rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz ± adularia veining, stockwork formation, and localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized), and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit although the thickness of the zone and associated alteration envelope diminish away from the orebody. A sample of undeformed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 ± 1.6 Ma; this date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As, Cu, and Mo content. Both CO2-and H20-rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit.

The intent of this paper is to provide overview context to allow broader understanding of conventional tailings dam failure mechanisms. The research leverages global knowledge, experience, and data collection and interpretation for the safe and controlled management of the geotechnical stability of a tailings storage facility. The motivation for this review is to facilitate transparent access to tailings dam background and understanding. This paper addresses the core understanding of geotechnical failure mechanisms, and how these eventuate to instability and failure of tailings dam structures. This research focuses on foundation failure, internal erosion and piping, overtopping, seepage, seismicity, and slope instability and provides insight into what factors contribute to failure, how failure progresses due to such failure, anticipating and monitoring for the aforementioned failure modes, and designing to mitigate their risk.

The 2006 Sago, Darby, and Aracoma mine disasters in the United States (US) forced the US government to implement the 2006 MINER Act and additional regulations that require all US underground coal mines to install and maintain refuge chambers to manage entrapment emergencies, in particular, fires and explosions. However, there is a debate on whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive such emergencies. Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes merits and problems of using refuge chambers and self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. The authors found that the use of refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions happen. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as Level 1 Emergency Exercises required in the Australian State of Queensland. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

A symposium on the characterization and toxicology of mineral dusts was held Sept. 19 and20 in Washington, D.C. The symposium was held to update the minerals industry, the health community, government agencies and academia on the technical, health and regulatory aspects of minerals to be evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).In October 1996, the IARC met in Lyon, France, to discuss and prepare “Volume 68 of the IARC Mono-graphs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans on Silica, Silicates, Dusts and Organic Fibers.”

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

Illinois No. 6 coals of IBC 101 and IBC 112 were treated in solution with sodium hypochlorite to remove their sulfur contents, especially organic sulfur. The lab experiments were conducted in two steps of leaching at room temperature and hydrolysis at 90oC. The removal of organic sulfur from IBC 101 was by 37.8% while that from IBC 112 was only 13.7% under their respective optimum conditions. This large difference in organic sulfur removal is considered to be due to difference in concentration of surface total acid group, 3.14 vs. 0.88 mmol/g of coal.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. We are very proud to add these five legendary gentlemen, who have demonstrated their sound technical and management skills to advance society on a worldwide basis, to our current list of 218 inductees being honored by the National Mining Hall of Fame.? 2013 Prazen Award winner ? Missouri is a state rich in mineral commodities. There is a variety of types of mining as well as minerals in the state. Different phases of mining are controlled by a variety of state and federal laws. What I hope to do today is to present briefly some of the interaction and interplay that has occurred in the recent years between the mineral industry and the Missouri regulatory agencies, as well as some of the interactions by federal agencies. First a little history which dates back to the late 1600's. For many years Missouri has been a leader in the production of lead and zinc. In fact, recent studies have indicated that Missouri produces better than three-fourths of the nation's present lead supply. Less well known but important resource is iron mining. Some of these operations were the source of confrontation during the Civil War. Major battles were fought in and around Ironton, Missouri where iron mining has occurred for many years. One of the largest pelletizing operations in the state is currently located within the city of Ironton. Joplin, Missouri, the home of Thomas Hart Benton, the famous Missouri painter, has a history of lead and zinc mining, going back to the later 1800's. Many of the paintings by Benton contain reference to the early days of mining in Missouri. There is a Benton mural in the City Hall at Carthage depicting the early days of lead mining in that area. Later, the center of lead mining moved to southeast Missouri near Bonne Terre and Flat River. The names of the towns in this area reflect the history of mining, examples - Leadington, Old Mines, Rivermines, etc. The history of lead mining in Missouri has been referred to in some detail in various publications(l).
