Over the last few years, and especially the last few months, issues relating to Corporate Governance in industry in general, and the Minerals industry in particular, have become increasingly topical, as a result of a number of scandals and failures. The development of International and National Codes for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves began some years ago, and has been followed by more stringent Listing Rules for the Securities Exchanges, as well as more standardised formats and protocols for financial reporting of assets and activities. More recently, some countries have adopted Codes for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, which have focussed on standardisation of valuation approaches to be adopted, and the qualifications of people deemed competent to sign off such valuations. This process has not been without criticism, the main criticism being the proliferation of local standards and regulations, which are often difficult to apply and regulate, or which are too prescriptive for multinational mining companies to deal with. In South Africa, these concerns have been recognised, while at the same time a need has been identified to establish a Code which could be applied to South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. Such a development would necessitate that the Code satisfies the needs of the continent, but in a global context. This global context has already been set by the activities of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions, the International Valuations Standards Committee and the International Accounting Standards Board. This paper explains the progress and process that has been established in South Africa for this purpose, and highlights the key issues which are open to public debate, so that the process is inclusive and transparent, whilst at the same time it is consistent with international time frames, and provides a deliverable product that meets the desired objectives.

Sixteen companies mined fuller’s earth in 11 states during 2004. Production during 2004, based on a preliminary survey of fuller’s earth producers, was 3.96 Mt (4.3million st) valued at $340 million. This compared with3.6 Mt (3.9 million st) during 2003, valued at $346 million. The 3.96 Mt (4.3 million st) probably includes some crude clay tonnage. And production of finished product probably was closer to 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) in 2004. Georgia was the leading producer state of attapulgite-type fuller’s earth, followed by Florida. Georgia also was the leading producer state for montmorillonite-type fuller’s earth. It was followed, in descending order, by Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Kansas and Texas.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

Valley-fill structures built of blasted rock overburden from Appalachian mountaintop surface mines pose many reclamation challenges. The steep mountainous terrain, short valley lengths, and straight stream channel profiles create significant challenges to implementing fluvial geomorphic landform design in terms of both form and function, and from a safety and constructability perspective. The fluvial geomorphic landform design approach balances erosive and resistive forces by considering long-term climatic conditions, soil types, slope profiles and vegetation types. Commercial geomorphic landform design software tools do not specifically analyze the stability and factor of safety for the computer-designed landform slopes. This research investigated slope stability parameters and factors of safety between a traditional valley-fill design with a geomorphic landform alternative. Slope stability assessments were performed on two profile geometries. Finite-element modeling of a permitted valley-fill and a geomorphic design alternative indicated that slope angle and internal angles of friction associated with the gradation of the overburden greatly affected the designed factor of safety for both designs. The geomorphic designed slopes yielded the highest factors of safety out of 14 models analyzed with all cases having factors of safety over 2.0. The high factors of safety are attributed to shallow slopes and beneficial surface and internal drainage.

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. The uranium can occur as discrete nonhomogeneous particles in the ore, and the error caused by such a distribution of particles is ± 4% (2o), as determined by

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2004 was estimated to be 790 kt (871,000 st), valued at $43 million free-on-board plant. This was below 2003 and about the same volume as 2002. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures, and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar and shipments of glass containers increased by about 4 percent. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continue to increase, taking the place of U.S. produced goods, and the feldspar required to make them. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. There are two major gold recovery methods: the hydrometallurgical technique, which employs cyanide solutions, and amalgamation method, which involves mercury (Hg). These methods present considerable health, safety, and environmental concerns. Past applications of alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD) on gold scraps show that α-CD is not only inexpensive, but is also environmentally friendly. This research work used α-CD to recover gold from gold ores instead of gold scraps. The gold ore was sourced from Shanono gold deposit site Kano State,Nigeria. The gold ore was characterized by fire assay (FA) for the precious metal. The concentrate was digested with aqua regia (AR) for 24 h. Modified AR, where hydrochloric acid was replaced with hydrobromic acid, was used for the gold digestion due to the good match in molecular recognition between gold bromide ion (AuBr)− and α- CD in a second sphere coordination complex. The digestate was characterized using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Gold recovery using this technique is pH sensitive, and five pH values (2.0, 3.6, 4.0, 5.4, and 6.0) were investigated. FA analysis showed the Shanono gold ore deposit contains an average of 4.71 ppm of gold, AAS analysis showed highest gold recovery of 69% at pH 4.0, which is lower than recoveries from the metal scraps. This could be due to the presence of other gangue minerals closely associated with the ore. However, gold recovery using α-CD on Shanono gold ore has shown to have a higher yield of 69% compared to 35.5% yield obtainable by Artisan Small Scale Miners using mercury.

In an effort to reduce the risks to underground miners of health hazards associated with exposure to high concentrations of diesel particulate matter(dpm), the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) published proposed rules in 1998 limiting dpm exposure in both underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. The proposed rule for underground coal mines would require removal of 95% of dpm by mass, while the rule for metal and nonmetal mines would eventually limit total carbon exposure from dpm to 160 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. The comment period for both proposed standards ended on July 26, 1999.In this session, representatives from MSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), equipment manufacturers, labor and industry will discuss the impact of the proposed regulations on mine operations and worker health. Questions will be taken from the audience after brief presentations from each panelist. This paper provides a compilation of written summaries of each panelist’s opening presentation.

US coal consumption reached new heights in 1985, but production was constrained by excess consumer inventories. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 742 Mt (818 million st) during the year. This is a 3.4% gain over the previous consumption high 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. An additional 84 Mt (92.7 million st) of US coal were shipped abroad in 1985, up 13.7% from exports a year earlier. Coal production in 1985 totaled 804 Mt (886 million st), 1.1% below the record 813 Mt (896 million st) produced in 1984. The slight decline in coal output is attributed primarily to a 13% drawdown of large consumer stockpiles built up in 1984 in anticipation of a miners strike that never occurred. Coal demand, and hence production, were also restrained by slower economic growth in 1985 and additional gains in nuclear generation of electricity. Domestic market requirements for coal in 1985 were mixed. Electric utility consumption rose 4.4%; coke plants consumed 6.7% less coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 2.1% and consumption in the residential and commercial sector fell 14.8%. The 2.2% increase in electric power generation in 1985 resulted in a 4.4% rise in utility coal consumption, totaling 630 Mt (694 million st) for the year. Twenty-nine of 45 states where coal-fired electric power plants were operating shared in the 26.7 Mt (29.5 million st) increase in 1985. Coal receipts at utilities fell by 16 Mt (18 million st) as these facilities worked off 21 Mt (23.4 million st) from stockpiles during the year. Electricity generation at coal-fired power plants similarly climbed 4.4% to 1.4 trillion kWh in 1985. This gave coal a 56.8% share of electricity generated from all energy sources compared with 55.5% in 1984. The average price of coal delivered to these facilities remained essentially unchanged during the year. It declined on 1.5% from $38.26/t ($34.71 per st) during the fourth quarter of 1984 to $37.70/t ($34.20 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1985. Coal consumption at coke plants continue to reflect a depressed steel industry. After rebounding 18.9% in 1984 for the first time in five years, coal consumption at coke plants again declined 6.7% to 37 Mt (41.1 million st) in 1985. Coke consumption 26.5 Mt (29.3 million st) exceeded production, 26 Mt (28.7 million st), in 1985. This resulted in a 1-Mt (1.2-million st) decline in coke stocks at producer and distributor levels during the year. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants decreased 7.6% from $64.30/t ($58.34 per st) during the final quarter of 1984 to $59.42/t (53.91 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal consumption in other industries, including all manufacturing and industrial consumers except coke plants, totaled 68.3 Mt (75.3 million st) in 1985. This was the highest level attained in more than a decade. But the lower percentage rise last year (2.1% compared to 11.8% in 1984) reflected slower growth in the nation's economy in 1985. The average price of coal delivered to industrial firms declined 4.5% from $42.32/t ($38.39 per st) in the fourth quarter of 1984 to $40.39/t ($36.65 per st) in the last quarter of 1985. Coal-producing states in Appalachia mined 9.8 Mt (10.8 million st) tons less in 1985 than in 1984 for a 2.4% loss. The largest contributors to the region's production decrease to 393 Mt (433 million st) were Pennsylvania, down 14.7% to 60 Mt (66 million st); Ohio, down 8.3% to 32.6 Mt (36 million st); and West Virginia, down 2.9% to 115 Mt (127 million st). Conversely, eastern Kentucky production was up 4.8% to 111 Mt (122.8 million st) in 1985, while production in Tennessee climbed 9.7% to 40 Mt (44 million st). No coal was mined in Georgia last year. Coal production in the interior region in 1985 declined 3.9% to 173 Mt (190.4 million st). Substantial production losses occurred in Indiana, down 8% to 31 Mt (34.5 million st); and in western Kentucky, down 7.9% to 36 Mt (40 million st). Coal production in Texas rose 5.7% to 39 Mt (43.5 million st) in 1985. Louisiana began mining lignite 140 kt (151,000 st) during the year. Production in the western region increased 3.4% to 238 Mt (262.5 million st) in 1985. Wyoming, up 5.3% to 125 Mt (140 million st); and North Dakota, up 16.5% to 23.5 Mt (26 million st) contributing the largest amounts. Production gains were also shown in Washington, Utah and, notably, in Alaska where coal output climbed 72.9% to 1.3 Mt (1.5 million st) in 1985. Most of the additional coal produced in Alaska last year was shipped abroad. Coal stocks held by consumers totaled 154 Mt (170 million st) at the end of the year. This was 27 Mt (30 million st), or 13.7% below the inventory level at the end of 1984. Stocks held by producers and distributors declined by 868 kt (957,000 st), or 2.8% in 1985 to 30 Mt (33 million st). A drawdown in stockpiles occurred in each consumer sector during 1985. Stocks held by electric utilities totaled 142 Mt (156 million st) at the year's end, 13% lower than stock levels at the end of 1984.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building. Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125kt/d (137,700 stpd). The most recent expansion included the installation of a semiautogenous mill (SAG) designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation, including conventional and column cells, and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modern distributed control system. PTFI’s operations are located in the Ertsberg mining district of Irian Jaya’s Jayawijaya Mountains, the eastern-most province of the republic of Indonesia on the Island of New Guinea. PTFI, the operator, is owned by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the government of Indonesia (9.4%) and private Indonesian investors (9.3%).

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

Naica consists of at least 10 mantos and 40 chimneys that have produced over 15 million tens of ore with 10% Zn, 13% Pb and 13 oz/ton Ag. The ore occurs in thick-bedded, folded Cretaceous limestone. Fractures and 26 Ma old felsite dikes with an initial strontium isotopic ratio of 0.708 localize the mineralization. The mantos follow the dikes and have abundant early skarn with manganohedenbergite, calcic garnet, idocrase, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, schellite and later sulfides. The chimneys arise from the mantos and change from silicate-rich to silicate-free sulfide limestone replacements. Carbon, oxygen and sulfur isotope data on carbonates, silicates, sulfides and sulfates are compatible with a single evolving (magmatic?) fluid.

Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

Mineral exploration has evolved into a sophisticated science which uses powerful scientific tools to make mineral discoveries. In addition to their usefulness in performing mineral exploration, these scientific tools can assist the exploration geologist in assessing environmental conditions at exploration sites. During exploration, environmental data acquisition should focus on data collection efforts which can be easily integrated into exploration activities, and should provide information needed for pre-feasibility and preliminary engineering design studies. Environmental studies performed during exploration should also include an environmental liabilities audit and a fatal flaw analysis to assess whether there are any unresolvable environmental or regulatory issues affecting the project. Performing extensive environmental baseline studies during exploration and project evaluation is neither necessary nor recommended. This paper describes opportunities to integrate environmental data collection with mineral exploration activities. This paper also examines how political and communication issues can affect the outcome of permitting efforts, and recommends a strategy to improve the industry's ability to respond to political challenges and to communicate with the public. This strategy integrates technical and political issues, and implements programs to convince the public of the mining industry's technological achievements and its commitment to resource stewardship and environmental protection.
