Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

The evolution of pit lake water quality depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock vs. oxidizable sulfide content, the alkalinity of recharging groundwater and the evapo-concentrative characteristics of the system. This paper assesses the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acid Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits, with long-term chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members that consist of influent calcium bicarbonate groundwater and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

Increasing public concern over the welfare of the environment has placed demands on the mining industry to evaluate the environmental impact of mining development. This is a difficult task and involves considering the influence of a multitude of variables on complex processes over a long time period. Few studies which focus on the evaluation of the environmental impact of mining have been conducted and, therefore, there is little past experience to rely upon. This article describes some of the work done to evaluate the potential environmental impact of mining development in Minnesota. Interest in developing the major copper and nickel sulfide deposits near the wilderness areas of northeastern Minnesota aroused concern regarding the environmental impact of mining development in the region. As a result laboratory and field studies were initiated to investigate the potential for trace metal leaching and acid generation due to dissolution of Duluth gabbro. Chemical equilibrium computer modeling was conducted to aid in data interpretation. The goals of the study included the investigation of leaching mechanisms and rates of release (1, 2).

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The pregnant solution is processed by a conventional closed circuit Merrill-Crowe system. The pregnant solution is clarified through three 158 L/sec (2500 gpm) US Filter Auto-jet clarifiers. A machine that improves safety during the cutting of boxholes (ore-passes) and travelways in underground mining operations has delivered impressive results in trials conducted at a South African platinum mine. The technology is a joint effort by Sandvik Mining and Construction and platinum mining company Lonmin. The ABH 1600 boxhole borer was built by Voest-Alpine Bergtechnik, Sandvik’s Austrian subsidiary. It was delivered to the Lonmin Eastern platinum mine in February 2005. There, it was deployed underground on the Number 8 Level (320 m or 1,050 ft below the surface) at the mine’s Newman incline shaft.

Is the laboratory sized coal specimen much stronger than underground coal pillars? The answer to this question has a profound implication to many coal operators. It will decide how much of the coal reserve can be recovered. Or, in many cases, it will determine whether it can be mined economically. Recent trends in several eastern states to establish regulations regarding coal pillar design to prevent surface subsidence long after mining heighten the debates. And, in some cases, these trends highlight the existing practices that seriously question the conventional wisdom. Currently, nearly all researchers and practitioners agree that as the size of rock specimens increases, its strength decreases. This concept has been universally adopted as the basic principle for coal pillar design in the United States. Several formulas have been derived to account for this effect. The reduction factor for underground coal pillars ranges from one-half to one-sixth of the strength obtained in the laboratory, depending on the formula selected. Recent case studies indicate that the reduction factor is not justifiable, at east in some cases. The use of a reduction factor is based on the assumption hat smaller rock specimens as tested in he laboratory contain none or fewer fractures or planes of weakness than larger specimens or underground coal pillars. In other words, the larger the rock materials, the more fractures it contains and subsequently weaker in strength. Do all underground coal pillars have more fractures than laboratory sized coal specimens? Not necessarily. All coal contains cleats. Some are con¬spicuous but others are not. In terms of cleat density (number of cleats per unit area), there is no difference between an underground coal pillar and a laboratory sized specimen, provided the specimen size is larger than the cleat spacing, which is mostly 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.).

A geologic investigation of mineral resources in South Carolina first began in 1825 when the General Assembly authorized Lardner Vanuxen to conduct a "Geological and Mineralogical Survey of South Carolina." Vanuxen, South Carolina's first State Geologist, reported in 1826 on the limestones (marble) of the Piedmont which during those early years, were burned in many shall, scattered kilns in the region wherever suitable raw material was available. He also mentioned the possibility of using marl from the Atlantic Coastal Plain province for direct application and enrichment to the soil. Since before the year 1844 industrial minerals in South Carolina have been commercially produced literally from A to Z, asbestos to zircon. The first pub¬lished reports of actual commercial production, not just an occurrence, are referenced in Table 1 for 33 known industrial minerals and rocks in South Carolina. Known or suspected occurrences of undeveloped non-metallic mineral resources in South Carolina await future verification by geologic mapping, sampling (including coring), possible beneficiation, and market analysis. These industrial minerals and rocks include, but are not limited to, special, clay minerals (e.g. bentonitic clays, zeolites and others), sillimanite, argillite (lightweight aggregate), kaolin (alumina) and marl (underground storage and tunneling medium). In addition other non-metallic minerals, once mined but still worthy of reconsideration, include topaz (industrial), heavy minerals, barite, feldspar, and monazite. Finally, possibilities for new reserves, as an expansion of existing mine output, might develop for fuller's earth, limestone (lime), sericite (finely divided mica), vermiculite, kaolin (paper coating and filling, other filler), and metallurgical gravel. Official South Carolina data from the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1974 indicated a total value of mineral production of $105.2 million. The objective of the US Geological Survey’s mineral deposit database project (USMIN) is to develop a comprehensive twentyfirst century geospatial database that is the authoritative source of the most important mines, mineral deposits, and mineral districts of the US. Since May 2017, the project has focused on critical minerals. Data for critical minerals that are produced as products are relatively robust, whereas data for critical minerals that may be recovered as byproducts are commonly of much poorer quality. Similarly, more is known about critical minerals that occur in conventional deposits than where those critical minerals occur in unconventional deposits. For example, rare earth elements occur principally in deposits hosted by alkaline igneous rocks, but there is potential for their production from phosphate rock mining, which is less documented. Lithium (Li) has been recovered from pegmatites and brines, but other Li-bearing deposit types have been delineated that may go into production. Cobalt may be produced as a byproduct or coproduct from a wide range ofmineral deposit types, whereas rheniumis a byproduct of copper ore. Significant opportunities for research exist that could help identify new sources of critical minerals, and may also help increase production and recovery from existing sources.

INTRODUCTION Heat stress continues to be a safety concern in underground mining. This is due to a number of reasons including increasing depths of mining, increased levels of heat generated from machines, ventilation systems being constrained from providing suitable levels of airflow and others. In order to assess if a thermal environment is safe for miners under normal or modified work arrangements, or to specify stop work conditions a heat stress index is used to guide decisions. Historically, a number of heat stress indices have been developed and applied in underground mines. These can be classed under three broad headings; single measurement, empirically based and rational indices. Do any of these indices perform better than the others? Which one allows simple determinations and decisions to be made in the mine? This paper aims to provide answers to these questions by comparing and contrasting three indices; effective temperature (ET), simple air cooling power (ACP) and Thermal work limit (TWL) for a range of typical mining wet and dry bulb combinations? The paper concludes with the identification of areas for future research. BACKGROUND Heat stress causes discomfort, increases physiological strain, decreases productivity and performance, and contributes to increased incidents [1]. Effective management and control of heat stress is particularly important in mining where hot working conditions are very common [2]. Heat stress index is a common indicator that is used by mine safety advisors and managers to guide decisions about safe work practices in mining under normal or modified conditions. According to Howes and Nixon [3] A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: • Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. • Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environmental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. • A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The link between these elements is an environmental measure that reflects the physiological strain a worker is subjected to. Since the turn of the twentieth century various indices of thermal stress have been developed (McPherson [4], Howes and Nixon [3], Brake [5]). In selecting a suitable environmental measure or index one problem that must be addressed is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to it accurately reflecting the physiological strain. No index can be universally applied and there is no single correct measure or index. However if an index has provided adequate control in a particular circumstance, then it can be regarded as correct for that situation.

The focus of this study was on the evaluation of hydrologic and environmental behavior observed in GeoWaste and waste rock test piles. GeoWaste is a mixture of fast-filtered tailings and waste rock prepared as a tailings-dominated mixture. The two test piles included potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock and were operated for 26 months to evaluate whether GeoWaste can suppresses sulfide oxidation and production of metal-rich acid mine drainage relative to PAG waste rock. The test piles were constructed in the shape of truncated 5-m-tall pyramids with 25-m base sides and flat 5-m × 5-m top surfaces. Water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, and oxygen concentration were monitored in four layers and at five locations within each layer in both test piles. In addition, 5-m × 5-m lysimeters were installed at the base of each pile to collect leachate. Approximately 2660 mm of water was added to the surfaces of the test piles via precipitation and irrigation (irrigation ≈ 1050 mm applied at an approximately constant rate for 70 days). The measured saturation, oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, and temperature in the GeoWaste and waste rock piles suggest more sulfide oxidation occurred in the waste rock pile compared to the GeoWaste pile. Observations from the pile experiments suggest that co-managing mine waste in the form of GeoWaste reduced acid generation compared to waste rock alone due to the lower permeability and unsaturated state of the GeoWaste pile that reduced downward migration of moisture and inhibited drainage.

Reserve Mining Company completed construction on a major process modification project in June of 1980. These modifications enabled Reserve to reduce and control its final iron ore pellet silica content from 9.0 20.77 percent to 5.0 50.26 percent. The paper outlines the implementation of neutron activation on-line analysis and associated computer control loops for measuring and closely controlling the silica content of the iron ore concentrate at Reserve Mining Company. It contains a general overview of Reserve's taconite processing facilities and a presentation of the theory and operation of the neutron activation analysis equipment coupled with the computer silica control loops.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

"Ore morphology plays a vital role during the milling and liberation of minerals. This study was carried out to understand the role of mineral crystallography and mineral interfaces on the milling and liberation processes. Data related to mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number and beneficiation processes were collected from literature, and detailed statistical analysis was conducted to relate these parameters. Review of the crystallographic information of minerals present in ores indicates that molecular weight and cell parameters significantly affect milling and liberation characteristics. Mineral interfaces were classified into the three categories of coherent crystals, semi-coherent and incoherent crystals, and breakage behaviors were studied. The studied cases revealed that these material interfaces control the micropore properties that play a vital role in the initiation of intergranular and intercrystalline fractures which occur in siliceous manganese ores and dolomite as a result of thermal treatment. In contrast, banded hematite jasper and coal exhibited a much more complex fracture pattern due to their coherent interfaces and finer physical associations. This study explains the effect of the various types of interfaces on milling, and the approach can be helpful in developing a methodology to enhance mineral liberation with minimum energy consumption.IntroductionComminution is a vital unit operation in the mineralprocessing, cement-making, power-generation and pharmaceutical industries. Its importance in mineral beneficiation operations is increasing every year as a result of the growing need to exploit lower-grade ore bodies and process reject materials (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low-grade ores require significant energy during grinding to liberate the valuable minerals, which are further separated from the gangues by various beneficiation methods. Various attempts have been made to enhance mineral liberation during grinding to minimize energy consumption. Most of these studies focused on the analyses of the compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Klimpel and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). However, many of these efforts had limited success, and there is a need to see the problem from a fresh perspective."

The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

Fall of ground accidents continue to be a source of injury in underground metal mines. MSHA accident statistics indicate that most rock fall accidents occur at a new face where drilling and blasting methods are used. Removing loose rock by scaling is imperative to removing the potential for rock fall injury. Detection of potentially loose rock could improve the scaling process and result in fewer rock falls. Infrared thermal imaging cameras were investigated as far back as 1966 as a tool for loose rock detection. Early on it was clear that sensitivity (e.g. detectable temperature increment) is a key factor in this application. Both pixel resolution and temperature resolution have greatly improved with modern instruments. This paper describes an evaluation of modern infrared thermal imaging camera technology to detect loose rock conditions at six underground metal mines in the western U.S. It was found that thermal images provide a high resolution visual discrimination between loose rock and intact rock. However, detecting loose rock was difficult in cases where the rock and ventilation air were at the same temperature. Loose rock was detected when rock was both warmer and cooler than the ventilation air temperature. Warm rock with cool ventilation air provided the best conditions for detection.

The flotation froth structure and motion determines the amount of entrained gangue that is collected to the concentrate. Despite this important role in the overall performance, the behaviour of the froth is still ill understood. To date, predominantly empirical models have been developed to describe entrainment. A fundamentally based model is described and used here in an attempt to improve the understanding of entrainment. This general froth simulator (UMIST FrothSim) allows the modelling of a wide range of flotation conditions, as it takes account of a large number of the physical phenomena that occur within flotation froths. The model firstly describes gas motion and bubble coalescence, and the water motion based on gravitational, viscous and capillary effects. The motion of the solids distinguishes between various solids classes based on hydrophobicity, particle size and density and models them by including the effects of Geometric and Plateau border dispersion, particle settling and the motion of the water. The aim of this paper is to show the applicability of this model to explain the observed entrainment and collection of gangue. This is done by comparing model predictions with the experimentally observed relationship between the gangue and water recoveries. The model predicts the identical trends, which are explained in terms of the interaction between the linear effects of water motion and hindered settling and the non-linear effect of particle dispersion.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations.
