Building on earlier work, an analysis relevant to international (Australasian) minerals trade is developed which accounts for both the impetus of globalization and national reaction or protection. At the firm level, integrated multinationals are contrasted with trade service providers. At the industry level tariff and, particularly, such barriers as quotas, standards, labor and environmental issues are explored. Specific areas examined include: location of both inventories and processing, sources of finance and currency risk, shipping availability and terms as related to processing level, residuals management or environmental controls, and “fair” labor standards. Intraregional rather than global trade is currently most likely.

Ilmenite smelting furnaces must be operated with a freeze lining of frozen slag to protect sidewall refractories from chemical attack by liquid slag. The process has two main control objectives: Firstly the slag TiO2 content must be controlled according to specification, and secondly a safe freeze lining thickness must be maintained. This text only concerns itself with the second objective. Freeze lining thickness cannot be measured directly due to conditions inside the furnace. It is therefore inferred from signals of thermocouples installed into the furnace sidewall. These signals are used as the 'controlled variables' in the freeze lining thickness control loop. The dynamic characteristics of these signals are the focus of this text. During this study a model of the process was constructed to study interactions between the slag bath and the freeze lining. This model was used to conduct simulation-type experiments to study the influence of various parameters (temperature, slag composition, ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input, etc.) on the slag bath, freeze lining, metal bath, furnace wall and other parts of the process. In the case of the furnace wall, the modelling results were first plotted in the form of time-dependent isotherms. The dynamic thermal behavior of the furnace wall became evident from these results. To illustrate the dynamics of sidewall thermocouple signals, the results were also plotted as time lags between events occurring in the slag bath, and the time when a thermocouple registered a temperature change. The events studied included sudden changes in slag bath state (composition and temperature), changes in operating setpoints (ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input), and operational errors (complete loss of reductant or of all feed). All of the result sets showed significant lags between occurrences in the slag bath and temperature changes in the refractory wall. The delays are such that it appears impractical to rely on sidewall thermocouple signals for warning of impending damage to the refractory wall, or for purposes of actively controlling freeze lining thickness. Some measures are suggested to improve the usefulness of these signals during furnace operation.

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. In addition, depletion of some mines in Australia and South Africa has offset rising output at other properties. Indeed, when final mine output figures for 1988 become available, it may well be

No major changes took place in the salt industry during 2004. No new uses of salt appeared and only localized supply disruptions occurred. Many salt producers reported slightly increased salt sales and profits for the year. In the United States, about half of the salt supply is produced as brine, by solution mining, and is used by the chemicals industry. One-third of U.S. salt is produced as rock salt by 14 underground mines. The remaining two production techniques, each with less than 10 percent of the total tonnage, are vacuum-pan-evaporation for refined, food-grade salt, and solar pond crystallized salt.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world's largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

"It is safe to say that the coal industry, in the United States and globally, is currently suffering through one of the hardest times in its history.A perfect storm of competition, changing energy demands, politics and public perceptions have collided, inflicting significant harm to the industry that many say is irreparable. This, in turn, has led to massive job losses in some regions, heavy cuts in production and even bankruptcy filings from two of the largest coal mining companies in the nation.Cheaper natural gas can certainly take a large share of the blame for the struggle of coal, as utility companies switch from coal to natural gas for power generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the amount of coal used for electricity generation in the United States is at a 45-year low.November 2015 marked the fifth consecutive month that natural gas was the leading source of power generation in the United States. EIA said generators produced 101,866 thousand megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity with gas in November versus just 87,789 thousand MWh with coal, the lowest monthly level since May 1980 when monthly coal use was 84,884 thousand MWh.According to Robert Godby, director of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy at the University of Wyoming, there are a number of factors playing a role in the decline of coal, but he points to the advances in fracking as the tipping point.“A lot of people will argue that regulation is the cause of the decline, and it has played a part, for sure, but the story of the recent past is more about what competition has done to the energy market,” Godby told Mining Engineering. “The war on coal was originally declared by natural gas in 2008.”The price of natural gas, which was at $13 per million Btu before the gas fracking boom, has fallen to as low as $1.68 in December 2015. Likewise, Godby said the cost of wind generation is now lower than the cost of generation from coal and the cost of solar generation is coming down as well. In addition to that, the demand for energy has changed in the past five years with more efficiencies in everything from building design to lightbulbs."

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a respirable dust survey to evaluate the effectiveness of a water curtain utilized for dust control on continuous miner sections. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the water curtain was effective in reducing respirable dust concentrations, since several mines currently use water curtains to control miners? respirable dust exposures. The survey was conducted on a supersection of an underground coal mine, which utilized two continuous miners on the same split of air. Each continuous miner alternated taking a cut so that both continuous miners would not operate at the same time. The underground coal mine is located in Knox County, Indiana. The water curtain evaluated in this survey was located in the last open crosscut between the intake side continuous miner and the return side continuous miner. When the intake side continuous miner cuts coal, its exhaust air would be used to ventilate the return side of the section. The intent of the water curtain was to reduce the intake air respirable dust concentration (generated by the intake side continuous miner) before the air stream ventilated the return side of the section. To determine the effectiveness of the water curtain in reducing respirable dust concentrations, respirable dust sampling pumps were placed on both the intake side and the return side of the water curtain. Additional respirable dust sampling pumps were placed farther downstream from the water curtain to monitor dust levels downstream of the water curtain, but in an area where respirable dust would not be created by anything other than the intake side continuous miner or additional section air. The water curtain and the respirable dust sampling pumps were operated only when the intake side continuous miner was cutting coal. The samples were analyzed for respirable dust and quartz content. The water curtain showed minimal effect in controlling respirable dust and respirable quartz dust, but the reduction was so negligible that this survey could not quantify the reduction. The measured reductions are within the accuracy of the sampling equipment.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained from existing data and investigation programs so mine water control systems can be designed and developed. These models allow the geohydrologist to predict the amount of groundwater inflow and the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, and to determine the schedule and equipment needed for mine dewatering. This article describes uses of the model and the essential components necessary to construct an effective and practical one. Hydrologic models are constructed to determine the extent that mining activities will affect the ground water and surface water hydrologic regime. These models range from basic analytical, mathematical models to the more sophisticated finite difference and finite element groundwater models. Many factors determine the degree of sophistication, including the mining stage, the complexity of the hydrologic regime, the mining process, and regulatory requirements. Model Uses The geohydrologist and engineer construct models so the entire ground and surface water handling and supply system can be integrated and optimized. These models can provide the following data: • Information for water balance studies-the entire hydrologic regime for the area, including precipitation, transpiration, evaporation, infiltration, runoff, and the effect of geologic features. • Data on seepage rates during mining. • Information to design the depressurization and dewatering system, including water well spacing, location of sumping systems, need for grout curtains, and possible horizontal drain and underdrain locations. • Data needed to schedule dewatering and mining operations. • Prediction of initial and long-term impacts of mining and dewatering, including local and areal drawdowns, effects on existing wells, and modifications to the surface-subsurface hydrologic regime. Potentiometric surface maps and hydrographs can be prepared from these data. • Prediction of the effect of discharge from the water control system on the surface hydrology and data input to design systems for water discharge, storage, recharge, or reinjection. The results of a computer study that illustrates the effect of dewatering and reinjection into an aquifer to confine the cone of depression are shown on the accompanying figure. • Information to forecast potentiometric surface recovery after mining ceases. The accompanying figure shows the pumping and reinjection rates in a program that is adequate to dewater a mine and permit the recovery of potentiometric levels to approximate premining levels after mining ceases. • Documentation and design information for monitoring systems to be installed during all mining phases. • Water quality predictions and geochemical changes, including the possibility of brackish or saline water intrusion because of extensive dewatering or depressurization operations. • Documentation and data for acquiring permits from regulatory agencies. Model Input Program For any model to be effective, detailed hydrologic and geologic data must be gathered from a review of existing information and from an investigative program. These data should cover entire model limits. Data updating, revising, and refining should occur as new information is received from the investigation and monitoring programs, and from the mining operation as it progresses through the pre-mining, mining, post-mining, and reclamation

The author attempted to concurrently apply the US Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Australian VALMIN Code to a complex mineral property appraisal assignment. This led the author into many severe difficulties. These difficulties included the high standards needed in the work of others, and information and statements needed from the client. The exercise also highlighted many positive features of both documents. Some conflicts were found between the two documents. Implications and thoughts regarding the development of a set of US minerals appraisal standards are discussed.

Most discussions of sustainable development (SD) in mining relate to metal mines in rural areas. Industrial minerals (IM) are closer to urban areas primarily owing to a high transport-cost component of delivered cost. This visibility to large populations overshadows IMs relatively small operation size and generally lower waste volume and toxicity. The IM industry needs to rethink its way of doing business to fit into the SD paradigm. Society and business in general will also undergo significant change to enable industrial SD along the lines of triple-bottom-line accounting with government pushing everyone. The benefit to IM mining from embracing SD is a renewal in their social license to operate and a rebirth of mining as a positively-viewed force in society. This positive view would lead to lower acquisition costs because society would not fight so hard to eliminate nearby mining. This would ease the current exploration woes of the IM industry by opening up new deposits for exploration and more readily allowing placement of mines nearer to markets. The earlier in the exploration process SD is initiated, the better.

Optimization and sensitivity analysis of mineable economic volumes have been standard practise for open pits for many years now, and more recently software has become available to apply techniques for delineating mineable reserves for underground mines. In general these techniques have been applied to a single resource model to quantify mineable tonnes and grade for underground mining. However by using multiple conditionally simulated models both the risk associated with the mining parameters and the risk associated with variations in grade, tonnes and profit can be quantified. Using suitable software the mine planner can then easily and quickly define and compare alternative designs to assess and improve the robustness of and the confidence in the final design.

The influence of solution ionic strength (IS) and electrolyte valence on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated. The microflotation tests were conducted over a range of solution IS (1?300 mM) at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (9.5), flotation time (10 min), and sodium oleate dosage (5.3×10-7 moles/g). The size of malachite ranged from 45 to 53 µm, and two different types of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) were employed. Electrophoretic mobility was also measured over the same IS range employed in the microflotation study. Overall, strong coupled effect of solution IS and ion valence was observed. Specifically, the flotability of malachite increased with increasing IS in the presence of monovalent cation (Na+) while the flotability increased up to 30 mM and decreased with increasing IS in the presence of divalent cation (Ca2+). Notably, the flotability of malachite was greater with the presence of Na+ compared with Ca2+ under high IS conditions (IS>30 mM). Consistent trend for Na+ versus Ca2+ was observed from the flotation results with different SO dosages. The characterization and flotation results suggested that the trend was likely attributed to the increased unfavorable interaction between malachite and bubble via the charge reversal of bubbles and malachite at higher IS in the presence of Ca2+.

The need for yieldable ground support, particularly in high stress or deep mining conditions, has grown in recent years. This paper highlights some of the current industry limitations and provides selection criteria for a new yielding ground support system, DSI?s Dynatork Bolt. This bolt distinguishes itself by withstanding 16 ? 30 kJ of energy deflecting loads anywhere from 7 ? 20 tons (depending on the energy). A summary of the laboratory test results and case studies will also be presented as a measure of the performance of this dynamic product.

Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.

Clean Diesels fuel-borne catalyst, Platinum Plus, helps improve fuel economy for all engines up to 10 percent while reducing particulate emissions by up to 25 percent. When used with a simple diesel oxidation catalyst, particulate emissions can be reduced by 30 to 50 percent. The use of Platinum Plus enhances combustion in the cylinder, burning fuel more completely. This reduces CO2 and other greenhouse gases and lowers total operating costs by improving fuel economy.
