Extruded Concrete Lining combines technological and financial advantages. The tunnel lining is reliably embedded in the surrounding ground as the fluid concrete is extruded at constant pressure directly behind the TBM supporting the exposed surface. Ground deformation from the TBM passage can be compensated and the ground will be pre-stressed by the extrusion process. Developments in concrete technology permit high speed tunneling by use of a slip formwork attached to the TBM. Realised projects in Milano (Italy), Lyon (France), Frankfurt (Germany) and Akima (Japan) will be demonstrated.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in the southwestern Chihuahua state of Mexico (Fig. 1). A Francisco Gold geologist discovered the prospect in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grassroots exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas silver camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiaryage. The mineralization appears tobe structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system, including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite.

The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. In recent times, with rare exceptions, most economically viable ore discoveries have been large, low-grade and located in remote parts of the world. Mining companies have often shown to be incapable of mitigating their social and economic impact on local communities. Sustainable development and relations can be achieved by implementing bottom-up methodologies to the top-down tools already in use by mining companies. In order to magnify the importance of enterprise facilitation as a primary method for community development, data from 25 years of community based work around the world was used. Results highlight the need for a grassroots approach to local economic and community development, which focuses on the creation of a parallel economy in communities. Using solely top-down methodologies for developing community relations is shown to be a limited resource for mining companies. There are fundamentally two dangers for mining companies: alienating the local population, resulting in militancy and lengthy legal battles to obtain a license to operate; and, being accountable for building social and economic infrastructure that are not the company?s responsibility.

Introduction Argyle is located in the Kimberley region in northwest Australia (Fig. 1). It is a significant diamond discovery by world standards and is the first major diamond find in Australia. The deposit consists of a pipe and associated alluvial deposits. Before the 1970s, diamonds were known to exist only sporadically in Australia. They have been found occasionally in association with gold deposits in Western Australia. There is a small deposit near Copeton in New South Wales. Some alluvial occurrences have also been found in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The first indicator minerals in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were discovered in January 1973. Production from the alluvial deposits at Argyle began in 1983. A $430-million construction program to develop a mine and treatment plant capable of producing 25 million carats per year was completed in December (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Ownership and management Participants in the project are known as the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture. The group consists of CRA Ltd., 56.8%; Ashton Mining Ltd., 38.2%; and the Western Australian Diamond Trust (formerly Northern Mining Corp.), 5%. The project is managed by Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRA. Marketing is undertaken separately by the Western Australian Diamond Trust and by Argyle Diamond Sales Ltd. (for CRA and Ashton Mining groups). History Ownership of the Exploration Joint Venture has changed over the last 12 years as various parties changed their shareholdings. The original Kalumburu Joint Venture was formed in 1972 with five participants, each holding a 20% interest. By 1983, a number of ownership changes had occurred. The end result is that two original participants have sold out. CRA now holds a 56.8% share and the Ashton Mining Group holds 38.2%. CRA also assumed project management in January 1977. Table 1 demonstrates the long lead times involved in developing a project.

There has been a continuous interest in chemical aids for processing Canadian oil sands by hot water extraction process since the first commercial industry operation in 1967. Several inorganic and organic chemical systems have been introduced, of which sodium hydroxide is the most widely used extraction process aid by major producers. Use of NaOH, however, results in accumulation of sodium ions in recycled water, causing higher clays dispersion and producing tailings with poor geotechnical properties that turn into mature fine tailings. This is especially true for low grade and oxidized ores, which present the greatest challenges in bitumen recovery and produce the major portion of fine tailings. In this paper, we are presenting a novel method based on use of inorganic polymers as process aids for various low grade oil sands ores. Denver flotation cell and a laboratory scale hydrotransport loop were utilized to evaluate the effect of chemical dosage and operating parameters on the processability of oil sands samples from Athabasca region. Process tailings were examined for properties such as water chemistry, suspended solids, settling rate and the ease of tailing treatments. Our results demonstrate that the use of inorganic polymers during the froth process lead to a significant improvement in bitumen recovery from low grade oil sands and can improve further tailing treatments. This offers a viable solution that can be easily incorporated into current processing facilities and deliver several operational and economical benefits. Advantages in use of inorganic polymers versus sodium hydroxide are presented in details.

Flame retardant materials can be incorporated or applied to products, including plastics and textiles, to increase their resistance to fire. Incorporating a flame retardant in combustible materials and plastics is a common procedure to reduce the risk of fires. Flame retardant applications include interior and exterior woods, structural steel columns, fabrics, open and closed cell foam, pressure treated wood, Formica and all types of fabrics for use in commercial applications as well as residential applications where their fire protection products can save lives and valuables. Huntite and hydromagnesite are amongst the most important flame retardant additives materials. Although various areas of the world have potential huntite and hydromagnesite deposits, their place in industry is not well known, and a detailed field search for their deposits has not yet been conducted. They are active during the starting phase of a fire, in that they prevent the spread of an inner or exterior source of ignition to the flame-retarded material, thereby, preventing, delaying or inhibiting the spread of a fire. Flame-retardants are, therefore, just one element among many in a concept for preventive fire safety. To obtain huntite and hydromagnesite concentrates that are more than 95% pure, which are used in flame retardant industry, flotation tests were conducted on low-quality huntite and hydromagnesite ores.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. The kinetics of the dissolution of galena was studied by monitoring the mixed potential of a galena electrode in ferric sulfate solutions. The results show that the mixed potential of the galena electrode fluctuated with time in a regular pattern in a 0.1 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 1.66 and in a 0.01 mol/L Fe2(SO4)3 solution of pH 2.33 at 35°C. The periodic accumulation and precipitation of lead ions at the galena electrode surface and the cyclical variation in pH at the galena electrode surface caused the oscillation phenomena.

The recent seismic events have shown that earthquakes have an immense destructive power. Chile was hit in February 2010 with a seismic intensity of 8.8 on the Richter scale, and had loss of about 700 killed persons, while Haiti was hit in January 2010 with 7.0 killing about 220?000 people. The event in Haiti showed that the seismic events can lead to a disaster if no preventive measures are taken. On the other side, the seismic event in Chile has hit a well-prepared country with moderate consequences. The earthquake with 6.6 Richter in Japan in March 2011, have further shown how severe the consequences can be if critical equipment is involved. Fortunately, the equipment in a mine has not the potential hazard as a nuclear power plant. Anyway, we are diligent and it is obvious that the seismic risk may lead to a real disaster even if the probability is small. The GMD is an important component in the grinding circuit of a mine. This paper maps out earthquake-prone areas including expected earthquake magnitude calculated according to relevant standards, focusing mainly on the building code IBC 2009. An overview is provided on how this standard is applied to mining equipment to minimize damage and aid large mills in operation to successfully withstand seismic effects. The differences in stresses and forces on the GMD and foundation are shown based on a turning and stopped mill simulation during an earthquake. The results demonstrate the need to maintain active and operating earthquake detection systems. Aside from detecting an earthquake?s magnitude, the sensor information can also be used to reduce the harmful effects that an earthquake has on mining equipment. As follows the earthquake requirements are defined. The last part of this paper explains how to fullfill these requirements.

Laboratory and pilot-scale test data have shown that the innovative feed presentation of the CrossFlow separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed or teeter-bed classifiers. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Recent side-by-side industrial-scale evaluations have verified that this technology can improve overall efficiency, reduce the cut point of separation, and increase throughput capacity. This paper describes the important features that make this novel separator ideally suited for size classification and density concentration. Test data from heavy mineral, phosphate, and industrial mineral applications are also discussed.

The 5 km (16,194 lf) of 6.1m (20 ft) diameter TBM driven tunnel built by the J.F.Shea Co. will serve as sewage overflow storage. The TBM tunnel and four connecting tunnels excavated by drill and blast methods in hard granite will remain unlined. Based on the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR), the Contract documents provided a design with no required pattern of rock bolts, no probing, no pre-excavation or consolidation grouting, and lastly, no final lining of the tunnels was deemed necessary. This paper will provide a general overview of these topics with the emphasis on the actual ground conditions encountered versus the projected conditions provided in the GBR and how the GBR reflected the design of the project. Proposed modifications to the temporary and permanent ground support will be presented and the necessity of probing and pre-excavation grouting will be evaluated.

Precast concrete segmental lining systems have been gaining widespread use in seismically active areas and a single-pass version of such a system has been developed for use on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit (SVRT) Project in San Jose, California. The response of tunnel linings to seismic shaking is often predicted using engineering judgment, elastic closed-form solutions and numerical modeling. Such analyses generally assume a continuous structural system and hence do not explicitly model the behavior of the jointed segmental lining. A number of analyses were performed to predict radial and circumferential joint behavior during seismic ovaling and wave propagation. These analyses included a complex, three-dimensional finite element based ground-structure interaction model that incorporates inelastic constitutive soil behavior, cracked concrete properties and no-tension, frictional segment joint surfaces. The paper discusses the results of the analyses and provides guidelines for the design of precast systems in zones of high seismicity.

The Ciénega project, now under construction by Peñoles group, is located in the mountains of northwest Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in a 4-km (2.5mile) long system of veins. An underground operation will be built. The planned 1 kt/ d (1100 stpd) process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to the development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994. Ciénega’s ore bodies consist of quartz veins containing gold, silver, lead and zinc values. The vein thicknesses vary from 2 to 10 m (6.5 to 33 ft) with a northwest trend and nearby vertical dip. Veins are hosted in Tertiary volcanic rocks. The district has intermittently been explored since 1971 by Penoles. After the third series of diamond drilling and direct development work on vein, Peñoles decided to begin project construction.

The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

Caterpillar’s 797 327-t (360-st) mining truck is currently being tested at the company’s proving facilities. Mine evaluations began in the second quarter. The unit will be commerically available in North America in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. The new model is the largest of Caterpillar’s off high-way truck line. In addition, the company has replaced its 966F series II and 970 F wheel loaders with the966G and 972G models. 797 mining haul truck Caterpillar developed the 797 mining haul truck in response to mining companies seeking to reduce cost per ton in large-scale operations. The 797 is sized to work with loading shovels used in large mining operations. And Caterpillar will match the body design to the material being hauled, to optimize pay-loads.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. (UNEP 2017) The European Union has already begun to de-scribe pathways to decarbonization.
