Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44 to 65% depending on bench height. This model was then applied to field tests at an eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35 to 65% with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive with a resultant cost savings of $.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. A near-record crowd of mining history enthusiasts made the trip to Leadville, CO in September to attend the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum’s 19th induction banquet. Dressed in Victorian garb, black tie tuxedos and formal gowns, the 268 people honored four distinguished men who made a lasting impact on the U.S. mining industry. They joined 188 other inductees. The first induction banquet took place in 1988, with about 500 people attending.

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

INTRODUCTION Design of supports for underground chambers in rock has undergone considerable development. This becomes evident when comparing support dimensions of subway station caverns built in the U.S. over the past fifteen years. The Porter Square Station cavern, which is a part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Red Line extension, is the latest in this series. It is approximately 168 m (550 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and 14 m (45 ft) high, and has a permanent support of light steel ribs imbedded in a 0.4 m nominal (15 in) shotcrete lining. An extensive construction control instrumentation program made it possible to evaluate the performance of the cavern and its support. This evaluation, which is presented in this paper, was the objective of a research project sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) and jointly conducted by Haley and Aldrich, and MIT. The actually used design procedure was compared with other approaches, notably procedures based on Finite Element analyses and empirical rock mass classification methods. Support dimensions predicted with all these approaches were compared to the actual support and its performance.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

Several recent tunnel jobs have required special adaptations of hard rock TBMs. Some of the special job conditions are ?no blast? launch requirements, small shafts or launch pits, proximity to existing underground structures, and short tunnels where the TBM must be retrieved through the primary lining. This paper describes a few of these projects, and the machine adaptations that have made TBM excavation feasible.

Construction of a new transportation link frequently requires crossing under an existing highway or railroad. Although traffic diversions may permit a cut and cover structure to be built, ‘zero impact’ tunnel solutions are becoming increasingly popular. The vertical clearance between the new tunnel structure and the existing highway or tracks may be very low; sometimes less than two meters. This leaves little room for error since any ground loss can rapidly translate into surface settlement. Problems can be avoided by maintaining the stability of the tunnel face and by minimizing ground movement around the tunnel lining. This paper examines construction methods that have been used to construct short tunnels with shallow cover, and highlights factors to be considered for future projects.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages—basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States for 2006 was 3.2 percent. The nominal GDP was about $13.2 trillion. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2006 rose significantly because of increased unit price for some metals—particularly copper, zinc and other base metals. There was also a significant reduction in metals stocks. Infrastructure expansion and manufacturing in China and India have been absorbing a significant portion of world output. A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

Homestake Mining Company has developed an estimating model, based on other closed projects, to audit and prepare new estimating plans. The results of recent closure audits reveal that the original budgets were often insufficient to cover the present expected expenses. Some of the major areas where technical challenges and costs are increasing include heap leach pile detoxification and rinsing, tailings dam closure, water management and treatment, abatement of contaminated soils, and many others. Risk and sensitivity analysis of each category will develop a level of confidence in the estimate and allow management to focus on the pertinent issues. Periodic audits of closure plans and costs throughout the life of mine serves to focus management attention on the complete costs of production. This will result in improved overall planning and management, and reduce the number of missed opportunities for savings.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

Seventeen percent of US coal production now comes from the 19 surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. The Powder River Coalfield, which coincides with this topographic and structural basin, is unique to the conterminous US, in that it contains an estimated 934.4 Gt (1.03 trillion st) of in-place coal resources. At least 13.2 Gt (14.6 billion st) is a compliant, strippable reserve base. In 1993, an estimated 162 Mt (179 million st), or 98% of the coal mined in this Wyoming coalfield, came from the thick - average 30.5 m (100 ft) - subbituminous, Wyodak coalbed, or from the Anderson and Canyon coals in the one mine where the Wyodak is split into two separate coalbeds. The other 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of coal mined in the Powder River Basin in 1993 came from the School, Badger, Monarch and Deitz No. 3 coalbeds. In this "world class" coalfield, there are at least 13 other persistent, 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) thick, coalbeds as well as the Big George and Lake De Smet coalbeds, which are each 61 m (200 ft) or more thick in places. None of these latter 13 coals are mined at this time.

During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

Traveling through the moors and valleys of Cornwall, England, one is reminded of the extensive mining activities of the past. Abandoned shafts, remains of granite block wheel houses and engine houses, battered brick stacks, old calciners, overgrown water wheel pits, count house remains, overgrown waste pits, and old portals are gaunt monuments to a once flourishing mining industry. Cornwall is bordered on the north by Devon and occupies the south-western most tip of Great Britain. The Atlantic Ocean borders the promontory; to the north, the mouth of the famous Bristol Channel faces the open sea; and to the south, the English Channel separates the land masses of Great Britain and Europe. This part of England is probably the most extensively mined ground in all of Europe. Such great mines as Dolcoath and Wheel Vor, Consols and South Carodan, Levant and Bottalack, remain legendary in the annals of metal mining in the nineteenth century. Many US mining districts hold close ties with Cornwall, Devon, and Wales through ancestors who emigrated from there to work in US mines in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Their descendants can be found in many major US mining districts, and their terms, expressions, customs, and methods have left an impact on the US mining scene that remains with us today.
