The development of 3D multi-parametric models facilitate the provision of resource information well in advance of the mining face. Using the model, one can evaluate mining areas not only for grade and tonnage predictions but also for predictions of rock mass quality. Blast design and milling requirements can be derived from the rock mass quality predictions. This information can be used for overall mine planning and evaluation, costing, production optimization and slope design. This allows the full range of mining activities and costs to be interconnected, thereby lowering costs and improving efficiencies through the application of the multi-parametric model. Feasibility studies for new projects require an expected budget expenditure estimate to within 5% of actual costs. This level of accuracy is expected by mining companies and investors but cannot be achieved without a sound knowledge of the rock mass variability. By developing a 3D multi-parametric model as part of the feasibility study and using the same geological model exploration boreholes, a significantly better understanding of the rock mass conditions can be obtained. This rock mass information can be used for equipment selection, economic pit layouts, processing plant design, underground mining layouts and support requirements, to name but a few design parameters that depend on rock mass conditions. The initiative at Anglo Platinums, Potgietersrust Platinum Ltd.?s (PPRust) operation, has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. The ore reserve model has gained international acceptance as an invaluable tool for a mining operation. Certainly most financial organizations will not invest in a mining project that does not have an ore reserve model. There is the potential for multi-parametric models to be recognized as vital tools in the mining process, as is the case with ore reserve models.

The current state of the South African mining industry is briefly reviewed from the point of view of an engineer not schooled in the finer details of predictive economics. Based on the assumption that current world exploration targets are indicative of which commodities the world will want in the future, it is concluded that the South African mining industry will continue to be viable and growing well into the future. South Africa holds the minerals the world wants and needs, and as long as the world has people, the demand for those, including gold, will continue to grow. There still is a growing demand for vanity commodities' and even the demand for platinum as a jewellery material displays significant growth. Mine safety still needs to improve, but significant improvement has already been made although the industry is not always acknowledged for the effort in this field. The safety target set for 2013 is within reach but will require sustained effort. The physical mining conditions for the main revenue earners, coal, platinum, and gold, will change substantially in the near future. Research in mining has declined alarmingly and it is urgently necessary for that to be revitalized to generate the knowledge that will be required. In order to streamline the transfer of knowledge to the mining engineers of the future, research needs to be conducted with the full involvement of the universities. It will also be necessary for the universities to continually review curricula to incorporate the latest knowledge and to embark on a campaign of knowledge transfer to the older generation of mining engineers. The mining industry is well supported by the universities, who have done their duty with regard to societal transformation, and the universities are in turn supported by the industry through vehicles like the METE Industry is also strongly supported by a number of professional and vocational societies. The SAIMM will continue to play its vital role as the meeting point of the mining technical sciences, and will continue to disseminate knowledge via the journal, schools, and conferences. In the future, it will review its modus operandi to support the needs of growing membership in the remote branches. It will enter the research arena in an appropriate manner and give effect to the developing integration of mining and society. The most important threat to the future of the mining industry is the recurrent mention of nationalization. While interaction between the mining industry and political and economic development of South Africa has always been characteristic, the current debate is emotional more than rational, and engineers are not well equipped to participate. This matter needs to be finalized before it becomes a popular force that politicians cannot control.

Viscosity measurements were carried out on slags in the CaO-Cu2O-CuO-MgO-SiO2systemcontaining ~ 63 wt% SiO2in air. The experimental work was carried out over a range of temperatures where the slags were completely liquid. Initial measurements were on a binary CaO-SiO2slag to which incremental additions of CuxO-MgO-SiO2slag with the same silica mole fraction were made. The viscosity-temperature relationship was measured for slags with‘Cu2O’contents of 0.02, 0.19, 0.38, 0.79, 1.69, 2.47, 3.01, 5.31 and 10.0 wt%. The proportions of Cu+and Cu2+in the slags were determined. The oxidation state of Cushifted from predominantly Cu+to Cu2+, with the Cu+/Cu2+ratio of approximately 0.3 for slag with a Cu content above 2 wt%. This is equivalent to Cu1.13O. The trends observed for changes of Cu2+/Cu+redox ratio with slag chemistry were consistent with the literature. Decreasing the CaO content by substituting copper oxide resulted in a decrease in the Cu+/Cu2+redox ratio. The change in ratio corresponded to a shift of the value of x in CuxO from an initial value of 1.8 to 1.1,when the slags contained 10% ‘Cu2O’. In this study, the SiO2content of the slags varied between 64 and 60 wt% as the Cu content increased. The viscosity of the slag containing 10 wt% CuxO was nearly 4.5 times lower than the binary CaO-SiO2slag. As the silica mole fraction (xSiO2) actually stayed constant (0.61±0.009),the results show that CuxO acted as a network breaker. Comparison with other ternary slags with similar silica mole fractions suggest that that addition of CuxO to silicate slags has a stronger effect on lowering the viscosity than FeO or MnO has on a molar basis. he flotation studies on hematite were carried out using di (2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the collector. The possible mineral reagent interaction was studied through electrokinetic and dissolution studies. The shift in zeta potential (PZC) and decrease in dissolution of iron in the presence of D2EHPA indicated that D2EHPA was specifically adsorbed on hematite surface. The adsorption imparted necessary hydrophobicity for flotation of hematite. Hematite could be floated selectively from hematite and quartz synthetic mixture. The junior and small-scale mining sectors in South Africa play an important role in the livelihoods of numerous communities. Mining presents an opportunity, in the post-1994 democratic era, for many individuals to obtain access to much required empowerment and socio-economic development. These sectors are, however, not without numerous characteristics that pose problems for operators, legislators, and other role-players. Mining is inherently risky, with operators experiencing frequent difficulties and challenges throughout the life of mine. Opportunity exists, and needs to be enhanced, for junior and small-scale prospects and operations to include technical risk assessment techniques in documentation presented in search for funding, and in optimizing monthly planning and longer-term functioning. The focus here is to explore how the risk management cycle may currently be applied to a mineral resource suitable for exploitation by the junior and small-scale mining sectors. No management process can create additional value in the ground, but various available mechanisms can go a long way to quantifying the inherent risk that exists, highlighting the need to manage the risks and hopefully allowing the entrepreneur access to the intrinsic opportunities of the emerging mining sector in South Africa.

Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). The coastal dune cordon of northern KwaZulu-Natal is among the highest in the world reaching heights in excess of 180 m and up to 2 km in width. It comprises a complex system of Quaternary stacked dunes of various geomorphologies, types and ages (Sudan, 1999; Maud and Botha, 2002;Ware et al., 2001; Ware, 2003). The dunes contain economic heavy minerals that have been exploited for the last two and a half decades. Dune units have recently been defined based on sand composition and texture(Sudan, 1999; Ware, 2003). Despite this, little work has been undertaken on the clay-fraction (< 2 um). This work documents the weathering of dunes to form clays. From the documented clay assemblages and relative abundances, a simplified weathering sequence with increasing maturity can be summarized as follows: primary minerals ? illite + vermiculite ?illite +interstratifications ?illite + montmorillonite ?halloysite + interstratifications + kaolinite ?kaolinite. The dominant controlling factors in determining clay assemblages is pH and leaching conditions. The presence of carbonates results in an alkaline pH and high concentrations of Ca2+and Mg2+which favours the formation of montmorillonite and vermiculite. However, vermiculite tends to form under slightly acidic conditions and is indicative of palaeosols where organic acids produce localized acidic pH’s. In contrast to this, kaolinite will only form and concentrate when carbonates have been leached. Kaolinite dominated samples are considered very mature under current climatic conditions(Chamley, 1989). Halloysite represents a transitional phase between montmorillonite and kaolinite (Herbillon et al., 1981). Ion mobility and evacuation is also critical in determining clay assemblages. Past work and field studies indicate that the dune cordon acts as an open system, resulting in carbonates and mobile ions being readily leached and lost from the system. However, when prolonged weathering has caused an accumulation of fine-grained material, the permeability decreases substantially whereby mobile cations and silica cannot be readily evacuated. This results in the formation of montmorillonite rather than kaolinite, even when carbonates have been leached. Illite (sericite) is considered to alter directly from feldspars. However, dune stacking and geometries, vegetation, water fluxes, reworking and erosion complicates this sequence.

Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

The economics of the process and the impact of process scale are discussed, along with criteria for process selection and system design.

"Nickel electroplating from sulphate electrolyte is an efficient process. To achieve good quality cathode, however, parameters such as temperature, nickel concentration, pH, electrode alignment, electrolyte flowrate and additives must be optimised, because these affect cathode morphology and current efficiency. It is also important to control the clarity and contamination of the electrolyte, as these have a considerable effect on the quality of the cathode surface. Delamination, surface roughness and pitting on the cathode surface can be caused by incorporation of solid particles or impurities form the electrolyte. Three types of solid particles were investigated: cuprous selenide, barium/ lead sulphate (co-precipitated) and ferric hydroxide. These particles can be found in industrial electrolytes, especially if there is a problem with the filtration step or contaminants have reacted to form insoluble particles. A rotating cylinder Hull cell was used for this investigation. It is found that the effects on morphology depend on the type of solid, concentration, particle size, current density and electrolyte flowrate. Cuprous selenide is the most detrimental, especially at higher concentrations, higher current densities and low flowrates. Increased rotational speed offers a uniform sheet of fine gas bubbles across the surface of the cathode which reduces the thickness of the diffusion layer of liquid adjacent to the cathode and increases the rate of mass transport to the cathode from the bulk liquid. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning operations are important when recovering associated by-products of nickel production, such as copper, cobalt and zinc, from pressure leach solutions. The base metal mineralization associated with platinum-group metal (PGM) production yields significant quantities of copper and nickel as by-products. The base metal refinery is vital in PGM processing as it increases the PGM concentration from mined ore by a factor of 400, in comparison with concentration by flotation (20 times) and pyrometallurgical processing (20 times) (Crundwell et al., 2011). Anglo American Platinum Ltd produces nickel cathodes by electrowinning and purges sodium from the base metal refinery in the form of sodium sulphate at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR), as shown in Figure 1. This is the Sherritt acid leach process used in most base metal refineries to ensure no loss of PGMs and shows the subsequent purification steps for copper and nickel. Other refineries in Zimbabwe, such as Bindura and Empress, use the Outokumpu leach process (Pavlides, 2001)."

Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

The unpaved road network on a surface mine is extensive, comprising numerous roads of varying construction and material qualities with highly variable traffic volumes. Existing haul road maintenance management systems (MMS) work well for predictable traffic volumes, but for complex mine road networks, the MMS becomes onerous. This results in sub-optimal road maintenance strategies with the attendant increase in total road-user costs and reduction in service. A real-time maintenance management system was thus sought to overcome the deficiencies of existing MMS for mine roads. Since most large mines operate trucks with on-board diagnostic data collation, linked through a centralized communication and GPS backbone, it was proposed that road condition could be monitored on a real-time basis through on-board vibration signature analysis. The aim of this paper is to present the development of a real-time mine haul road maintenance management system. Following are view of mine road maintenance practices, the real-time system architecture is introduced and the results of a field trial of on-board vibration signature assessment is presented. The trial results are discussed in the light of road defect signature recognition, analysis, signature repeatability and system limitations. This approach has applicability to other situations such as a network of district roads, subject to an analysis of the economic feasibility. The paper concludes that modern technology has the potential to apply maintenance as and where needed with possible reductions in authority cost and an improvement in service provided for the road user.

This paper describes the various factors that contribute to the maximum design pressures acting on box fronts and how these factors influence the mass and economy of box front steelwork. The influence of material density, rock size and moisture content on the incidence of hang ups and mud rushes in the rock pass is also highlighted. The loads acting on any box front are a function of several different parameters. These include natural, operational and excavational parameters. A case study analysis was carried out using UG2 ore and a typical box front structure to demonstrate the relationship between the mass of the box front and the material pressures resulting from variations in the above parameters. Based on the results of this case study, the required design mass of a side mounted box front for a rock pass containing platinumUG2 increases in (close to) linear proportion to % overbreak and is also linearly proportional to the pressure on the face of the box front beyond saturated conditions. The mass of the box front structure also doubles with a 100%increase in over-break which emphasises that a box hole excavation that is as neat as possible will yield a lighter and more econimical box front structure.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Technikon Practical Training Frank shaft is mining both Merensky reef and UG2 reef. The Merensky orebody is almost depleted and this was the reason for starting to mine the UG2 ore reserves. It was decided to mine the UG2 orebody with trackless equipment using a bord and pillar mining method. Frank shaft has been mining the UG2 orebody for nearly 5 years. The T-cut mining method was introduced to see if it could improve the grade of the run of mine (ROM) as well the extraction percentage.

Work undertaken in the field of cut-off grade optimization has not advanced much beyond the work undertaken by Lane in 1988. His definitive work is based on the calculus of the Net Present Value criterion which is the most widely understood, consistent, and appropriate method by which sequential cash flows arising from the extraction of mineral reserves from an exhaustible resource can be represented. Although the mathematics is not complex Lane’s method is not a widely appreciated or applied approach to maximizing the value of a mining operation through selection and balancing of operational cut-off grades. Three stages in a mining operation namely, mining, processing and marketing were defined by Lane and the economics of each stage are identified and isolated to provide an optimum cut-off for each stage. Points of intersection along the present value curves for each stage of a mining operation are used to identify balancing cut-off grades at points where the capacity of the mining, processing and marketing stages is fully utilized and the Net Present Value of the operation is optimized. Data that simulate a small, deep-level Witwatersrand-type gold mine with an average grade of 6 g/t Au and a logrithmic variance of 1.2,are applied to the model to illustrate the benefits of representing cut-off grades in terms of present value curves for different segments of a mining operation. ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet.
