Namibia's newest mining enterprise, the Navachab Gold Mine, was officially opened by President Sam Nujomo during June 1990. The mine is a joint venture between Erongo Mining & Exploration Company Limited, Metal Mining Corporation of Canada, and Rand Mines Windhoek (Pty) Ltd. Erongo has a 70 per cent interest in the mine, while Metal Mining and Rand Mines hold 20 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. Anglo American Corporation and its associates hold two-thirds of Erongo shares and CDM (Pty) Ltd one-third. The Mine is managed by Erongo Mining & Exploration Company. The property is located some 10 km southwest of the town of Karibib and 170 km west-northwest of the Namibian capital of Windhoek (Fig. 1), the name of the Mine being taken from the farm on which the gold deposits were discovered. Navachab is an opencast operation and was brought into production in December 1989 at a cost of around R84 milion-RS,2 million under budget. The plant is designed to treat 840 kt annually at an average gold grade of 2,6 g/t. This wil produce 1900 kg of gold per year, which at today's prices will earn Namibia more than R60 million in foreign exchange.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

He holds the folowing degrees: BSc (I&S), BSc Hons (Met Pta), ND (Met Tech), AEP (Unisa). Prof. R F Sandenbergh was educated at the Afrikaanse Hoerskool Germiston and the University of Pretoria. He holds the degrees of B Ing (Chem), M Ing (Chem), and D Ing (Metal). President's Award Professor Jannie van Deventer, Head of the Department of Metalurgical Engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, has been honoured with one of the five President's Awards for 1990. These awards are made by the CSIR's Foundation for Research Development. The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

The resistance of yielding rockbolts to multiple impact loads was tested by means of a drop hammer. The methodology was based on the ASTM D7401-08 standard as well as the requirements specified for rockbolts by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB – a Swedish mining company) and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee of South Africa (project number GAP 423). During the tests, the loading force and bolt elongation were measured with a sampling frequency of fs = 19.2 kHz. In order to analyse the phenomena involved, the tests were recorded using two independent high-speed video cameras (600 and 1000 frames per second) and one thermal camera (128 frames per second). The tests demonstrated that all the samples transferred double the gravitational potential energy of Ep = 50.85 kJ from the impact load of mass m = 2825 kg and impact velocity of v = 6.0 m/s without failure. Damage to the bolt-resin contact in the upper anchoring zone of the bolt in the steel tube occurred after subsequent impacts. As a result, the macro-deformed bolt exhibits additional yield, and its operation following the shearing of the resin bond is similar to that of a ‘cone bolt’. Only one test resulted in damage to the threaded bolt rod-nut coupling, during the fourth impact; however, no damage to the bolt-resin contact zone was observed.

Advanced optimizing control of the fluidised bed zinc roaster has been in use for an extended period at Boliden Kokkola and the implications are seen as extended bed stability, increased throughput and far better on-line availability. The roaster furnace control system developed is based on a dynamic and predictive furnace model, with parameters determined experimentally at the site. The controller maximises the concentrate feed and keeps the furnace operational parameters inside limits given by raw material mix and equipment constraints. The products of a zinc roaster, calcine, sulphur dioxide and the side products, such as mercury, meet gradually more stringent requirements, in particular as to their assays and total recoveries in the process chain. The end users of sulphuric acid in northern Europe, among others in the pulp and paper industry, require mercury levels much less than the conventional 0.2-0.4 ppm Hg. Therefore, secondary de-mercurising circuits have been used over the last five years for further cleaning the SO2 stream allowing production acid grades with less than 0.08 ppm Hg.

1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

Mine closures have traditionally prioritised environmental rehabilitation, often overlooking the deep socio-economic disruptions that follow, particularly in mining-dependent communities. This paper argues that mine closure should not mark the end of prosperity but rather the beginning of a sustainable transition. The coproduction model, which integrates community participation, governance, and economic planning, offers a transformative approach to closure planning. Drawing on case studies from Ghana, Zambia, and Indonesia, this research examines the successes and failures of past closures, highlighting the critical role of stakeholder engagement, skills development, and economic diversification. By incorporating emerging technologies such as AI-driven economic forecasting, blockchain for governance transparency, and decentralised finance (DeFi) models, mining companies can ensure a just and sustainable post-mining future. This study challenges outdated closure models and presents a forward-looking strategy that sees mine closure not as an endpoint, but as a catalyst for social resilience and economic transformation. It underscores the need for policy reforms, stronger governance, and investment in alternative industries to prevent mining towns from becoming economic wastelands. By shifting the paradigm from remediation to regeneration, this research calls for a new era of mine closure planning that puts people and prosperity at its core.

Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

ABSTRACT: This paper contributes to the study of underground structures in argillaceous media, especially Tournemire argillites (Aveyron, France). The basic results obtained over six years in two experimental drifts at the Tournemire site are presented. In situ measurements cover drift wall temperature, humidity and convergence. Delayed convergence represents around 50-65% of the total measured convergence. Analysis of the measurements has shown that delayed convergence is explained by the viscoplastic behaviour of the argillaceous formations. Lemaitre’s rheological model has been extended to the orthotropic case, as Tournemire argillite is naturally anisotropic. The triaxial creep test results on samples at different orientations enabled the parameters of the Tournemire argillite to be identified in terms of orthotropic viscoplastic law. A plane deformation model, using this rheological law and the initial stress field in the site, was developed to interpret the convergence measurements in the drifts. The computed results match the measurements well, especially during the excavation phase. KEY WORDS: Argillite, convergence, time-dependent behaviour, creep, viscoplasticity, modelling. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der vorliegende Artikel ist ein Beitrag zur Untersuchung der unterirdischen Strukturen tonhaltiger Milieus, insbesondere der Tongesteine von Tournemire (Aveyron, Frankreich). Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse, die in zwei Forschungsstrecken am Standort Tournemine über einen Beobachtungszeitraum von sechs Jahren zusammengetragen wurden, werden hier vorgestellt. Gemessen wurden in situ Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit und Streckenkonvergenz. Von der insgesamt gemessenen Konvergenz sind etwa 50 bis 65 % auf zeitlich verzögerte Konvergenz zurückzuführen. Die Auswertung aller Messungen hat ergeben, dass die zeitverzögerte Konvergenz mit dem viskos-plastischen Verhalten des Tonsteinmassivs zu erklären ist. Aufgrund der naturgemäßen Anisotropie des Tongesteins von Tournemine wurde das rheologische Modell von Lemaitre auf den orthotropen Fall ausgedehnt. Triaxiale Kriechversuche bei jeweils unterschiedlicher Ausrichtung dienten der Ermittlung der einzelnen Parameter des orthotropen, viskos-plastischen Gesetzes. Zur Auswertung der Konvergenzmessungen innerhalb der beiden Strecken wurde unter Beachtung dieses rheologischen Modells sowie des ursprünglichen Spannungszustands vor Ort ein flächiges Deformationsmodell entwickelt. Die Rechenergebnisse zeigen eine gute Übereinstimmung mit den Messungen, insbesondere während der Vortriebsphase. RESUME : Cet article est une contribution à l’étude des structures souterraines dans les milieux argileux, notamment les argilites de Tournemire (Aveyron, France). Les principaux résultats obtenus pendant six années, dans deux galeries d’expérimentation au site de Tournemire, sont présentés. Ces mesures portent sur la température, l’humidité et la convergence des parements des galeries. La convergence différée représente environ 50 à 65% de la convergence totale mesurée. L’analyse de l’ensemble des mesures a montré que la convergence différée est interprétée par le comportement viscoplastique du massif argileux. Etant donné que l’argilite de Tournemire est naturellement anisotrope, le modèle rhéologique de Lemaitre a été étendu au cas orthotrope. Les résultats des essais de fluage triaxial, sur des échantillons à différentes orientations, ont permis de déterminer les paramètres de la loi viscoplastique orthotrope. Un modèle en déformation plane, utilisant cette loi rhéologique et l’état de contrainte initiale dans le site, a été développé en vue d’interpréter les mesures de convergence dans les galeries. Les résultats des calculs sont en bon accord avec les mesures et plus particulièrement durant la phase de creusement. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree This paper addresses the critical parameters that need to be considered when designing a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a narrow tabular steep dipping orebody. These parameters are : ?Reef dip ?Reef width ?Geological structures within the orebody ?Physical dimensions of the selection of machines ?Gradeability of the selection of machines. The main objective in designing such a layout is to maximize machine efficiencies whilst minimizing dilution. This methodology was then applied in the design of a mechanized bord-and-pillar mining layout for a given piece of ground (Vlakpoort and Moddergat) using a given selection of machines. This piece of ground contains the PGM bearing UG2 Reef with an average thickness of 124 cm and dipping at 18°withadverse strike and dip changes. Two bord-and-pillar layouts were designed for this area. Layout 1 is characterized by the use of strike conveyors to convey ore on strike with an average LHD hauling distance of 35 m. Layout2 uses LHDs for all on strike conveyance of ore with an average hauling distance of 75 m. These two layouts were then technically and financially compared. It was concluded that layout 1 is theoretically superior but layout 2 was chosen due to its greater flexibility and probability of operational success. Layout 2 was also compared to conventional mining and it was concluded to be more economically feasible. However the latter is a proven mining method in these conditions and has a lower risk operational failure. Bord-and-pillar mining has some favourable promises such as improving labour difficulties, lowering operating costs and providing safer working conditions. The success of mechanized bord-and-pillar mining in narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies will depend on the extent of the research and development efforts which need to create and innovate technologies to overcome some of the current limitations stated in the above-mentioned parameters.

An effective prototype face support system to minimize rockfalls in rockfall-prone mines was developed and patented during a project sponsored by the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC). An experimental development model (XDM) roof support unit was developed and evaluated. Mines with rockfall problems in the face areas can use the roof support system to reduce fatalities and injuries in the face area of stopes. The roof support system consists of two similar support units connected to each other via two crank mechanisms. Each unit consists of a headboard supported by a ?wishbone? structure (top and bottom leg). In the first design a threaded bar with struts similar to a scissors jack keeps the legs apart. (In the final version that was field trialed, the threaded bar mechanism was replaced with a hydraulic cylinder). All the components are manufactured from steel. To move the system forward the first support unit is collapsed, the second remaining in the loaded position. The first unit then hangs from the second unit to which it is connected. The first collapsed unit is then manually cranked forward and prestressed. If the required position is still not achieved, the other unit is released and moved forward. The specification for the system was determined and presented at a workshop with industry participants. Different concepts were developed and evaluated against the system specifications. A technology demonstrator was then developed and tested on surface. The technology demonstrator development process included detail design, building and testing of components and subsystems, design reviews and the building and commissioning of the technology demonstrator. The testing of the technology demonstrator was done in a 500-ton hydraulic press, in a mock-up stope and underground. A risk analysis, in which technical, logistical and economic aspects were assessed, was done to determine the critical areas of the system. During the next phase of the project working prototypes were developed for underground tests and evaluation. This process indicated that it was necessary to adjust the system specifications and a redesign was called for. In an iterative process test units were built for purposes of evaluation, specification verification and field trialing. After the successful conclusion of the trials the equipping of a complete production stope started for purposes of integrating the system into the current mining process.

Frithia humilis is an endangered succulent plant species. Its distribution range overlaps with the coal fields of Mpumalanga and it is therefore threatened by opencast mining activities in particular. One of the 11 known populations of F. humilis was translocated from a licensed coal mining site to three suitable receptor sites within the species? distribution range. A longterm monitoring programme was initiated to track the progress of the newly established populations. Temporal trends in population demography, size classes, and fecundity were recorded. Population numbers of size classes fluctuated annually. However, flower frequency increased over time and seedling recruitment contributed significantly to population growth. Receptor sites with similar geological conditions to the donor site had more persistent cohorts, which suggest that such sites should receive priority during the translocation of endangered edaphic specialists. This study not only confirms that a Frithia humilis population can successfully establish after a translocation, but also serves as an important baseline for future comparative purposes to gauge the long-term success of the translocation effort.

The classical limit equilibrium methods are suspected to be ineffective in predicting the potential for highwall failure in many instances in coal mines around the world. Slope engineers have for many years recognized a block thrust failure mechanism for slope failures, but little work had been done before 2000 to explain the actual mechanisms which must be responsible for the failure. The main reason for this is that limit equilibrium methods implicitly assume rigid blocks, and the resulting force equations must be satisfied everywhere simultaneously for them to have any meaning. This paper will show that the material involved in the slope failure is not rigid; indeed it undergoes considerable permanent deformation during failure. This observation allows the authors to treat the block boundaries independently, because they need not maintain a constant spatial relationship with one another, as is assumed in other methods. To enable analysis of this type the authors assume that the weight of the blocks is evenly distributed. This is reasonable, because the slope material is not strong enough to be self-supporting without some sort of constraint, or strong enough to be able to apply point loads to the surrounding material. The purpose of this paper is to extend the practical application of the analytical method developed from mechanism studies to provide an objective assessment of the risk of slope failure, and therefore guidelines for more stable slope designs. This work is based on studies carried out on two failures in an open pit coal mine in South Africa, and provides a methodology to assess the potential for failure more objectively than is possible with currently accepted methods, while at the same time remaining sufficiently simple to allow a ?back of the cigarette box? assessment by geotechnical engineers on site.

"SynopsisGoing beyond transformation claims contained in employment equity scorecards and industry compliance reports, this article provides qualitative insight into the initiatives employed and challenges experienced by mining companies in a quest to transform the mining industry. Perceptions expressed during in-depth interviews with 10 senior executives showed that the assumption that mining companies are reluctant to transform is erroneous. Results from this study suggest buy-in and commitment to transformation. This article describes specific initiatives undertaken by mining companies to transform. The most notable initiatives include staff recruitment efforts to appoint historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs), staff development initiatives, as well as community development. The findings furthermore contextualize the challenges experienced by industry participants in their quest to transform. Despite accusations that industry participants are not taking responsibility for the implementation of the transformation agenda, government needs to recognize that they too have a role to play and need to appreciate and assist in the current challenges experienced by the industry.IntroductionWe need a mining sector that works. Mining employs over half a million people. It is the biggest earner of foreign exchange in our country. It also contributes about 20 billion rand directly to tax revenue. Mining also makes a far larger contribution as a buyer of goods and services, and a supplier of inputs to other sectors of our economy and other economies around the globe’ said President Jacob Zuma during the 2014 State of the Nation Address (Zuma, 2014). However, despite apparent commitment from government, enforced compliance with social and labour plans, regulations and Mining Charter targets, the South African mining industry is slow to gain local and international investor trust (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Mashego, 2013).Industry players acknowledge that their context has changed – creating various challenges (Davis, 2014). In the past few years, such challenges included subdued commodity prices, increased working costs, constrained infrastructure, and high labour costs, coupled with poor levels of productivity, strained labour-management relations, an uncertain regulatory environment, and the inevitable maturation of the industry (Deloitte & Touche, 2013; Davenport, 2014). Mining affected communities also became more cognisant of their rights, and politicians more vocal in their expectations from their relationships with the mining giants (Davis, 2014). One of the main issues that contributed to the difficult operating conditions was claims from organized labour and Minister Shabangu that this industry is too slow to transform. Specific claims were made in terms of employment equity, fair salaries and wages for mineworkers, housing and living conditions, health and safety issues, and general working conditions (Limpitlaw et al., 2005; Miningmx, 2013; Shabangu, 2010). These claims were followed by what Gill Marcus, Reserve Bank Governor, explained as ‘unprotected strike action [that] has escalated into an uncontrolled, violent and unlawful landscape, led by a mob mentality in the absence of formal and recognised leaders’ (Mavuso,2013)."

In their excellent paper, Milev and Spottiswoode have provided quantitative and definitive descriptions of an important phenomenon that hitherto has been largely the subject of conjecture. They convincingly show that ?site-response? can amplify the strong ground motions on the rock-wall of a stressed tunnel by a factor of 10 to 12 compared with the PPV in the solid rock mass (at the same distance from source). This knowledge gives us a firm foundation from which to begin to build an understanding of the mechanism of damage resulting from a rock burst. Regrettably this understanding is still far from adequate, in my opinion. The authors of this paper, however, have made some statements that are too reassuring and which tend to reinforce the sense of complacency that prevails among many members of the rock engineering community on the deep gold mines.

"The purpose of the project is to convert current shuttle car utilization on an underground coal mine to best practice by focusing on change-out points and tramming routes, which have a major influence on shuttle car away times. Time studies were an integral part of the project as these enabled the determination of shuttle car away times. An indirect proportional relationship between shuttle car away times and productivity is established. Through the time studies, it is deduced that a third shuttle car will make an insignificant contribution to production when there is only one split open. During this time, maintenance on the third car can be optimized. In order to satisfy the mine’s key performance indicator of keeping shuttle car away times less than 75 seconds, a belt extension must be scheduled after the third split is open. It is established that at any given time, a minimum of two shuttle cars should be used. When cutting on the left-hand-side of the belt road with only two shuttle cars available, the centre and left (left of the feeder breaker) shuttle cars should be used for coal hauling. When cutting on the right-hand-side, the centre and the right-hand-side cars should be used. If only one shuttle car is available, the centre car is the most efficient to use. Alternative anchoring configurations can be employed so as to enable cars (left or right, especially) to reach the opposite extremities of the panel and hence minimize cable length restrictions. "SynopsisScattered mining was practised on Kusasalethu Mine (previously Elandsrand Gold Mine) prior to 1998, but at deeper mining levels it was no longer feasible, since it would have resulted in unacceptably high stress levels and energy release rates. Longwall mining was not adopted at these depths as the mine required a more flexible mining method owing to the highly variable grade and the presence of geological structures. A mining method was developed that consisted of dip stabilizing pillars for regional support, as well as bracket pillars to clamp geological structures. A strict sequence of extraction was followed and this, together with the particular layout, was called the ‘sequential grid mining method’. This method addressed two key problems, namely negotiating adverse geology and the erratic grade of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) orebody. However, a significant drop in production rates resulted in the need for alternatives and improvements to the original mine design. Modifications to the design were proposed in order to increase production rates, and an investigation to consider the rock engineering implications of these modifications was conducted. The study indicated that the modified method, called the ‘multi-raise mining method’, appears to be feasible and might address some of the production problems that were experienced with the original sequential grid design. An analysis of actual seismic data showed no significant differences between the original sequential grid mining and the implemented multi-raise mining. The numerical modelling of the mining layouts showed slightly higher interim energy release rates (ERRs) and average pillar stress (APS) levels during the extraction process. The final values are nevertheless identical to that of the original sequence. The study also investigated the use of a modelled moment method to analyse future seismic trends. The study illustrated that the expected seismic trends will be very similar for the multi-raise method compared to the original sequential grid mining method. This study is nevertheless considered of a preliminary nature and ongoing monitoring and analysis of seismic data at the mine is required to verify the response of the rock mass to the modified sequence and increased extraction rate. In particular, future work needs to investigate the effect of mining rate (advance rates in individual panels as well as volume of mining in particular raise lines) on the level of seismicity."

"There is large electricity generation potential in discard coal, both in stockpiles and current arisings. Power stations with a combined capacity of up to 18 GW electrical (GWe) could be fuelled by discard coal. Modern circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers, with capital costs comparable to equivalent pulverized fuel (PF) boilers, are capable of utilizing discard coal at a high efficiency while reducing sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions though the use of limestone sorbent for ‘in-situ’ capture.A detailed economic assessment of the feasibility of electricity generation from discard coal, comprising material and energy balances and the construction of a discounted cash flow (DCF) table, shows that it is also potentially attractive from an economic perspective. A base case analysis shows positive net present values (NPVs) and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 21.4%. Sensitivity analyses on critical parameters show that the economic viability is heavily dependent on parameters such as coal cost and the value of electricity. The project becomes unattractive above a coal price of approximately R300 per ton and at an electricity value below approximately 59c per kilowatt-hour (kWh).Site- and project-specific information such as the delivered cost of coal, location and efficacy of sorbents, and effective value of the electricity produced can be used as input to the economic analysis to evaluate siting options and sorbent source options for such a power station."
