Concerning the excavation of rock cavern, it is one of the most important issues to evaluate the behavior of rock joints. But few detailed measurements for joint behavior had been conducted. Therefore, in order to evaluate the stability of rock cavern, effective approach for monitoring and analyzing the joint behavior needs to be developed. In this paper, authors described the results of analysis for joint behavior during the excavation by comparing with both results of the in-situ measurement by BTV and the numerical analysis by MBC model. Bei Ausschachten von Gesteinshöhlen ist es von besonderer Bedeutung, das stark von den Verbindungsteilen beeinflusste Gesteinsverhalten zu bewerten. Jedoch wurden bisher nur wenige Beobachtungen über das Öffnungsverhalten von Verbindungen durchgeführt. Daher muss ein effizientes Verfahren zur Überwachung der Stabilität unterirdischer Höhlen und der Analyse des Verhaltens von Verbindungsstellen entwickelt werden. In der vorliegenden Studie beschreiben die Autoren das Verhalten von Verbindungsstellen während der Ausschachtung durch Vergleiche sowohl mit den Ergebnissen von in situ Messungen mittels BTV als auch numerische Simulation mit dem MBC Modell, welches auch Diskontinuitäten berücksichtigen kann. Quand il s’agit d’excaver une caverne dans une roche ayant des joints très développés, il importe fort d’évaluer le comportement de la roche. Cependant, le nombre d’observations du comportement des roches effectuées au niveau de joints est loin d’être suffisant. Par conséquent, pour s’assurer de la stabilité des parois des cavernes souterraines, il a fallu mettre au point une méthode fiable de détection et d’analyse du mouvement des joints. Dans cet article, les auteurs décrivent leurs études de comportement des joints pendant l'excavation, en comparant les résultats des mesures effectuées in-situ, dans un chantier d’excavation par BTV , avec ceux d’analyse de la simulation numérique par MBC permettant de tenir compte des discontinuités.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

The aim of this investigation was to study the influence that varying production rates have on iron sinter quality. This was done by performing sinter pot tests at different pressure drops over the sinter bed, namely 11 kPa and 15 kPa (for 500 mm total bed depths). During each of the sintering processes temperature-time profiles were recorded of the top, middle and bottom layers of the sinter bed. On completion of the sinter process the sinter cakes were divided into top, middle and bottom layers. The physical properties of each layer were subsequently characterized by performing a tumbler test and a sieve analysis. A comprehensive mineralogical study was also conducted on each layer. This study revealed that sinters of similar cold strength could be produced under the examined production rates. However, a higher production rate was accompanied by an increased amount of fines. The cold strengths of both sinters significantly increased from the top layer to the bottom layer of the sinter bed. This strength variation is not related in any simple way to the phase composition. At the exploration stage for new mining projects or for medium- and long-term areas of existing mines (typical of South African gold mines), drilling data is on a relatively large grid. This grid is normally larger than the selective mining units (SMUs). Direct estimates for the SMUs and also of much larger block units will then be smoothed due to the information effect and the high error variance. Any capital-intensive project decisions made on the basis of any of the smoothed estimates will tend to misrepresent the economic value of the project or operation, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the mean grade of the orebody. This paper presents a direct approach technique for deriving recoverable resources, referred to as localized direct conditioning (LDC), designed to correct smoothing effects and also to provide support corrections.

The transmission of excessive vibration to the human body can cause physical stress that may result in crippling pain or permanent disability. Rock drills are known to transmit high levels of vibration that are difficult to attenuate through conventional approaches to vibration isolation. However, it can be shown that once the ISO frequency weighting has been applied, most of the vibratory effect of the rock drill?s motion is concentrated at the drill?s operating frequency. This observation opens the way for utilizing a concept known as vibration absorption, aimed at attenuating the rock drill?s vibration. In essence this entails using the inertia of a secondary vibratory system to counteract the motion of the handle. This article documents an investigation into the use of such an absorber for attenuating rock drill vibration and demonstrates the feasibility of such an approach. A mathematical model of such an absorbing handle was developed and used for design studies. Based on these investigations an experimental prototype model was manufactured and tested. A significant reduction in vibration levels could be achieved.

It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

A South African gold mining rock-related fatal accident database has been analysed in order to determine rock-related fatality trends in the gold mining industry over the period 1990 to 1998. This analysis was extended further to include some of the individual reefs mined and focused particularly on the Carbon Leader Reef, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef, the Vaal Reef and the Basal Reef. Rock-related accident locations are also presented. A stope rock-related risk is proposed, where the fatality rate in terms of rock-related fatalities per million square metres mined for the gold mining industry as a whole is compared to individual reefs, allowing a stope rock-related risk to be attributed to the individual reef. This comparison is extended further by removing the contribution by the reef being evaluated from the industry data, thereby allowing this reef to be directly compared to the rest of the industry with respect to a stope rock-related risk.

"SynopsisCommencement of the next phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a year or so away from becoming reality. Some 50 km of tunnels in the form of access adits, shafts, diversion tunnels, and main waterways will be constructed. Sprayed concrete will form an integral part of the temporary and permanent rock support systems that will be installed. Furthermore, the use of sprayed concrete as a final tunnel lining solution was proposed as a viable alternative to concrete linings in the feasibility studies that preceded the forthcoming implementation phase.The aim of this paper is to make the reader aware of all the sprayed concrete related issues that engineers tend to grapple with during the design and construction of tunnel projects and other underground works. Primarily, these issues would include selection of applicable design parameters, technical specifications, construction application methods, quality control and, most importantly in the context of final or permanent linings, the durability of sprayed concrete.The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 12 has been tasked specifically to publish a set of recommendations on the Quality and Control of the Application of Sprayed Concrete and the Testing of Sprayed Concrete for Durability. These tasks were also further explored at the recent World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2015) that was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia at the end of May 2015.IntroductionSprayed concrete is presented in a variety of shapes, designs, forms, application methods and accompanying terminologies including shotcrete, gunite, pneumatically applied concrete, and the like. This paper addresses the prediction of groutable joint apertures, grout penetration limitations, and possible grout take volumes per cubic metre of rock, as a result of 5 to 10 MPa pre-injection pressures ahead of tunnels. Joints are obviously opened more than in the preceding Lugeon tests, and many rock mass properties can apparently be improved if stable micro-cement based materials are used. "The South African squat coal pillar strength formula, developed by researchers from the Chamber of Mines Research Organization in the 1980s, predicts an exponential increase in coal pillar strength once a critical width-to-height ratio of 5 is exceeded. The arguments that have been proposed in favour of this formula are discussed critically in this paper.Field experience with squat pillars in the USA and evidence from published physical, analytical, and numerical model pillar studies corroborate the fact that a squat effect is unlikely to occur in coal pillars at width-to-height ratios less than 10. Furthermore, an exponential increase in peak strength of coal pillars does not exist. An alternative design criterion for squat pillars in South Africa is therefore suggested. IntroductionFive decades of coal pillar research in South Africa have produced a wealth of information on the mechanisms contributing to the strength and failure of in-situ coal pillars and accompanying phenomena. The relevant knowledge was sourced from, and for, a South African coal mining environment that remained largely unchanged in the second half of the 20th century. The depth of mining seldom exceeded 250 m, with mined seam thicknesses averaging 3 m and typical pillar width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 3–4.It is therefore not surprising that comparatively little research has been directed at the prediction of coal pillar performance in deeper deposits, where squat pillars of larger width-to-height ratios will be required to support the overlying strata. However, a thorough understanding of squat pillar performance will be necessary should the remaining deep coal deposits of the country be extracted in future, for instance in the Waterberg or Ermelo coalfields.A squat coal pillar strength formula has already been proposed in South Africa. The origin of this formula will be discussed in some detail in the following sections and its appropriateness will be critically reviewed against a great amount of evidence from relevant squat coal pillar research conducted internationally."

TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

Common practice in mineral resource estimation consists of partitioning the orebody into several domains defined by grade intervals, prior to the geostatistical modelling and estimation/simulation at unsampled locations. This paper shows the pitfalls of grade domaining through a case study in which we compare the performance of several estimation schemes and demonstrate that the use of domains defined by grade cut-offs implies a deterioration of the resource estimates, mainly in what refers to precision and conditional bias. Then, several conceptual limitations of the grade domaining approach are stressed, in particular the fact that it does not account for the spatial dependency between adjacent domains and for the uncertainty in the domain boundaries. Also, this approach is shown to be sensitive to the cut-offs that define the domains, to provoke artifacts in the kriging maps, histograms and scatter grams between true and estimated grades, and to lower the kriging variance, a feature that may impact the mineral resource classification. An alternative approach is finally proposed to overcome these limitations, based on a stochastic modelling of the grade domains and a co-kriging of the grades using information from all the domains. A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for an expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated 'risk' via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters, etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Cyest Carbon Modelling Technology platform, and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. a 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

Some observations on 'ancient' mining at Phalaborwa C. E. MORE. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) A brief account is given of historical references to the Phalaborwa area, the first being to the mountain of copper and iron sought by Francois de Cuiper in 1725. These are followed by a description of several finds in the area, which are related to finds described in the literature and to Bantu tradition on the subject. Phalaborwa is one of the earliest known mining sites in the Republic of South Africa, Loolekop having been a mining centre, as shown by carbon-14 dating, since 770 A.D.

Plain and alloyed titanium aluminides of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al were prepared by melting commercial-purity titanium and aluminium with additions of 1 at.% precious metal. The as-cast alloys were subjected to potentiodynamic scans in 5, 15, and 25 wt% HCl aqueous solutions at room temperature and compared for their abilities to spontaneously passivate. Addition of precious metals resulted in a general improvement of corrosion resistance by increasing the open circuit potential to more noble values. Addition of 1 at.% gold or silver to titanium aluminide did not significantly increase the corrosion potential (Ecorr) above that of the plain titanium aluminide alloy, indicating that gold and silver are not sufficient cathodic modifiers to improve the corrosion resistance of titanium aluminide in all the solutions tested. However, platinum, palladium, and iridium additions shifted the corrosion potentials to the position of the passive region of plain TiAl for all solution concentrations. This indicated that TiAl alloyed with these platinum group metals would passivate spontaneously by cathodic modification. TiAl alloyed with palladium performed the best in 5 wt% HCl solution with the most positive corrosion potential. In 15 wt% HCl solution, alloys with platinum exhibited the most positive corrosion potentials, while alloying with iridium or palladium revealed more negative corrosion potentials. Thus, palladium alloying led to the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in low-concentration HCl solution, whereas platinum and iridium alloying additions resulted in the best cathodic modification of titanium aluminide in high-concentration HCl solutions.

South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

The Palabora open pit is scheduled to cease operations in 2002. While the ore body continues below the bottom of the final pit shell, the stripping ratio precludes further economic open pit mining. Palabora Mining Company has investigated various means of continuing copper production, and has determined that an underground mine is the best solution. Board approval to commence construction of the mine has been granted and shaft sinking is underway. First production is planned for the year 2000 and full production of 30 000 t/d will be achieved by the end of the year 2002. [ ] Mechanised block caving will be the mining method employed at Palabora. The cave will be initiated by excavating a thin horizontal slice known as the undercut. Removal of the undercut will induce stresses which cause the rockmass overhead to fracture. Fractured rock will gravitate through drawbells to drawpoints on the production level, and be loaded by LHDs for transport to crushers.
