This paper presents the lessons learnt during the transition from an open pit method to a sub-level open stoping method at the Koidu Limited kimberlite pipe. These learnings may assist other mines with planning, both from a practical implementation perspective (layout, charging up challenges), and a method for estimating potential dilution and stability challenges associated with the interaction between the surface and underground excavations. Predictive geotechnical stability modelling was successfully applied to highlight potential failure zones, which allowed modification and enhancement of the mining layouts and quantification of the potential dilution of the kimberlite from indicative instabilities.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. Nanobubbles (NBs) flotation separation can be an indicator for improving the efficiency of fine particles through the conventional process. Since flotation reagents such as frothers can reduce bubble size, they can potentially be used for the generation of NBs and develop a selective NB flotation separation. This study explored the flotation separation of fine phosphate particles from their associated minerals in the presence of NBs, which were generated by using a phosphate flotation reagent (Flo-YS: collector-frother). The results of flotation tests showed that in the presence of NBs, the flotation efficiency was significantly improved. However, in the presence of NBs, surface chemistry analyses (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) illustrated that the collector adsorption on the surface of phosphate particles decreased. A comparison between outcomes of various phosphate flotation conditions indicated that increasing the flotation efficiency in the presence of NBs may be due to the aggregation of fine particles by the generated NBs, and also selective adsorption of NBs (hydrophobisation) on the surface of particles. In other words, generating NBs by selective collectors may increase efficiency and decrease the collector consumption of a flotation process. The improvement of coal waste management practices, through the co-disposal of waste rock with sulphur-lean fine waste tailings (<1 mm in size), can potentially mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD). On exposure to natural oxidants, the sulphide compounds present in mine discards generate acidity, creating a cyclical oxidation process intensified by iron and sulphur oxidising microorganisms. To inhibit the emergence of ARD, a stable mine dump may be constructed that is structurally stable and incompressible through the mixing of complementary waste fractions that reduce voids and access to acid generating surfaces. However, large voids manifest as scale increases, due to decreased particle interlock, enabling the unrestricted access of oxidants leading to the early onset of ARD. To avoid this phenomenon, enhanced packing approaches based on geochemical and geotechnical characterisation tests were employed to improve bed stability. These were assessed for long-term prevention using aggressive oxidative conditions typical of heap leaching applications. Favourable results were obtained for both blended and multi-layered systems. However, long-term success was most notable in beds with alternating layers of waste rock and fine waste tailings with co-mingled systems being more susceptible to failure. Deconstructed co-disposed beds provided valuable insight into post-leach structural transformations. Results indicated that relative changes in initial coarse discards to fine waste ratios were most notable in blended systems. Mass fractions of the comparatively more mobile fine wastes increased axially down these test columns that ultimately resulted in increased contact of oxidants with the acid generating waste discards. Conversely, more consistent ratios were observed in multi-layered configurations. In these systems, near impervious hardpans were created by the moisture retaining fine tailings, forming stable structures with neutralising barriers sustained at each alternating layer. Consistent with post-leach geotechnical characteristics, static acid-base accounting tests showed that the uppermost sections of blended systems were more susceptible to oxidation due to structural failure with fine particles migration, while the more stable multi-layered configuration evenly maintained neutralising capacity. The objective of this paper was to investigate the possibility of reducing process (fresh) water and increasing recycled water (thickener tank overflow water). As part of the investigation, rougher flotation tests were done with the two water types and a mixture of the two (50%/50%). The effect of recycled water on the grade-recovery response and rougher recoveries was investigated. When thickener tank overflow was used (50% and 100%), the nickel+copper grade versus nickel recovery decreased. The decrease in the grade-recovery was due to higher pyrrhotite recovery. Also, there were no effects on nickel and copper recoveries, which was confirmed using multivariate statistical analysis at the 95% significance level. The effect of a sulfite reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and enargite was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests using single and mixed minerals were performed under various concentrations of sulfite. The flotation tests using a single mineral showed that the sulfite reagent depressed the natural floatability of both minerals at pH 9. Surprisingly, enargite was floated after the addition of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) following the sulfite treatment, and the floatability of chalcopyrite depressed under a similar condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results showed that the sulfate species increased after the sulfite treatment on both minerals. However, the addition of PAX removed this sulfate species and rendered the enargite surface hydrophobic. This phenomenon was not observed on the chalcopyrite surface. FTIR analysis and PAX adsorption studies were performed to support this finding. The flotation of a mixed mineral was in agreement with the flotation of a single mineral, indicating a possibility for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and enargite using the proposed method. "Penetration of matte into tap-hole bricks causes detrimental refractory wear, which can lead to furnace breakouts. The ability of the tap-hole clay to form a protective layer on the brick, thereby limiting matte penetration was investigated by examining the interaction between platinum group metal (PGM) matte, tap-hole clay, and alumina-chrome refractory bricks on a laboratory scale.Samples containing clay and brick as well as samples containing clay, brick, and matte were heated to different temperatures to establish the clay-brick interaction and the extent of matte penetration. The greatest degree of physical contact between the brick and clay was achieved at curing temperatures of 600°C. Poor clay-brick contact was observed in the sample that was heated to 900°C.Matte displaced the clay in the clay-brick-matte sample that was heated to 1350°C, with significant matte penetration into the brick. Less matte penetration was observed when the clay-brick-matte sample was heated to 1500°C. Less matte penetration was also observed in the claybrick- matte sample in which the clay and brick were pre-baked at 800°C, and the sample then reacted with matte at 1350°C. IntroductionFloatation concentrate from ore from the eastern Bushveld Complex of South Africa, specifically the Platreef, Merensky, and UG2 reefs, forms the feed to the Polokwane platinum smelter (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The ore from the UG2 Reef has a high chromite content, which requires high operating temperatures (1500–1700°C) to avoid chromium spinel build-up in the furnace hearth. These high operating temperatures lead to matte superheats in the vicinity of 500– 600°C, which put increased demands on the refractory materials (Nelson et al., 2005).Upon tapping, the matte moves through the tap-hole, which consists of an aluminachrome refractory brick-lined tapping channel (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The flow of molten matte is stopped by the injection of tap-hole clay to form a plug in the tap-hole. The tap-hole clay hardens and strengthens during curing to obtain the required hardness and refractoriness against penetration, corrosion and erosion (Nelson and Hundermark, 2014)."

The postulation that primary platinum group metal (PGM) matte will chemically react with magnesia-chrome bricks when temperatures exceed 1500°C was tested. Magnesia-chrome brick samples were heated in contact with matte at 1300°C to 1750°C for 30 minutes, after which the refractory samples were analysed using reflected light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were all completely penetrated by matte. As the temperature increased the matte also penetrated the fused aggregate grains and disintegrated them. The chromium concentration of the matte inside the refractory samples was found to be slightly higher than that of the bulk matte. At temperatures of 1500°C and higher, MgO, FeO, and magnesium-rich silicate crystals could be identified in the matte directly adjacent to the refractorymatte interface. Phase relations clearly indicated that chemical reactions take place between primary PGM matte and the magnesiachrome refractory material at temperatures above 1500°C, but that these reactions are more complex than expected from FactSAGE® calculations.

Altering the microstructure in order to improve the tensile properties of bow shackles resulted in inconsistency in the fatigue performance. This raises the question whether the inconsistency in fatigue life can be attributed to microstructural changes along the profile of the shackle or to decarburization at the surface. Bow shackles forged from 080M40 (EN8) material were subjected to different heat treatments in order to alter the microstructure. The shackles were subjected to five different fatigue load cases, which represented typical loads experienced at termination points for an overhead power line with a span length of 400 m, with changes in conductor type, configuration, wind, and ice loading. Although the change in microstructure does improve both the tensile and fatigue performance, we found that the depth of the decarburization layer has a greater effect on the high cycle fatigue life of bow shackles than the non-homogeneous microstructure.

(NEt4)[NbOCl3](ttfa)] crystallized in the monoclinic P21/c space group, with a = 11.483 (5), b = 12.563 (5), c = 17.110(5) Å, and ß = 100.838 (5)o. The complex structure exists in a 50.0% (NbA) : 50.0% (NbB) positional disorder ratio.IntroductionComplexes containing organometallic type ß- diketone ligands with O,O and O,N donor atoms are used widely in coordination chemistry and have applications in catalysis, radiopharmaceuticals, etc. (Schutte et al., 2011; Roodt, Visser and Brink, 2011; Brink et al., 2010; Otto et al., 1998). These ligand systems are very useful because of their highly coordinative nature, high solubility, and also due to their ability to be functionalized with various substituents on the carbonyl carbon atoms (Schutte et al., 2011).Only a small number of ß-diketonate ligands have successfully been coordinated to a Nb(V) metal centre, with only a select few being characterized by X-ray crystallography (Viljoen, 2009; Bullen, Mason and Pauling, 1965; Preuss, Lamding and Mueller-Becker, 1994; Funk, 1934; Davies, Leedlam and Jones, 1999; Allen, 2002. The synthesis and crystal structure determination at room temperature of mer-oxidotrichlorido (thenoyltrifluoroacetylacetonato- k2O,O’)niobate(V) {(NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)]} was first reported by Daran et al. in 1979. Accordingly, for this current investigation, (NEt4)[NbOCl3(ttfa)] was re-evaluated at 100 K to determine if the structural features might change with temperature."

Interest in early gangue rejection has grown substantially in the minerals industry to reduce energy and water consumption arising from excessive comminution. Recent developments in coarse-particle flotation have proven successful by promoting a quiescent hydrodynamic environment to limit particlebubble detachment and by helping to convey more buoyant particles to the overflow. Current approaches also benefit from upstream classification to remove the finer particles ahead of the coarse-particle flotation. In this study, coarse-particle flotation was investigated experimentally using a novel hybrid gravity-flotation system called CoarseAIR™ that exploits the hydrodynamic advantages of the Reflux® Classifier. The system consists of a lower fluidised bed housing, with a system of inclined channels above. The inclined channels enhance the segregation and hence rejection of intermediate through to relatively coarse particles containing little or no surface liberation. This approach overcomes the need for pre-classification, while offering strong transport of coarse particles made buoyant through their attachment to air bubbles. The paper explores the strong relationship between the solids transport to the overflow and the input gas flux, showing firstly the potential for significant mass rejection at the relatively low gas fluxes, and robust performance in terms of recovery across the full range of gas fluxes. The excavation damage zone (EDZ) caused by drill and blast excavation consists of intense damage adjacent to the remaining half barrel of the blast hole, new fracturing induced by the blast and reactivation of pre-existing fractures. The properties of intense microfracturing adjacent to the half barrels of remaining blast holes are based on study of rock samples from ZEDEX-tunnel and it’s extension at Äspö and the Research tunnel at Olkiluoto in Finland. The new and reactivated fracturing is based on results of mapping of slots cut in the rock in ZEDEX-project. The zone of increased porosity adjacent to half barrels, which penetrates to a depth of some centimeters was studied by using novel 14C-PMMA method. The penetration of the radial fractures, which is an order of magnitude deeper, was studied by mapping using color penetrant. Results of EDZ studies carried out at Äspö HRL in Sweden and in Research Tunnel at Olkiluoto show that the properties of EDZ can be affected significantly by engineering design. The result imply that the additional pore volume caused by distinct fracturing around the blast holes caused by state-of-the-art smooth blasting technique could be of the same order as that of the damaged zone adjacent to the surface of the half barrels. Die Eigenschaften einer immensen, an die Halbrohre der Restbohrlöcher angrenzenden Mikrorissbildung beruhen auf einer Studie über die aus dem ZEDEX-Tunnel gewonnenen Gesteinsproben und deren Fortsetzung im Untertage-Labor Äspö (Hard Rock Laboratory, HRL) in Schweden und im Forschungstunnel bei Olkiluoto in Finnland. Die neue und reaktivierte Rissbildung basiert auf den Auswertungsergebnissen der Schlitze, die bei dem ZEDEX-Projekt ins Gestein geschnitten wurden. Die Zone der vermehrten, an die Halbrohre angrenzenden Porösität, die in ein paar Zentimeter Tiefe eindringt, wurde anhand der neuen 14C-PMMA-Methode untersucht. Das Eindringen der etwas tiefer gelegenen radialen Risse wurde anhand eines farbigen Eindringungsmittels untersucht. Die in Äspö und Olkiluoto durchgeführten EDZ-Studien zeigen, dass die EDZ-Eigenschaften wesentlich durch Engineering Design beeinflusst werden können. Das durch Bohrarbeiten verursachte Hohlraumvolumen der Rissbildung um den Tunnel herum ist ähnlich wie das Hohlraumvolumen der Bruchzone um die Bohrlöcher herum. Les caractéristiques de la microfracturation intense adjacente aux demi-cylindres des trous de mine restants reposent sur l’étude des échantillons de roche en provenance du tunnel ZEDEX et de son extension au laboratoire souterrain d’Äspö (« Hard Rock Laboratory » ou HRL) en Suède et du tunnel de recherche d’Olkiluoto en Finlande. La fracturation nouvelle et réactivée repose sur les résultats du placement des rainures sur la roche dans le projet ZEDEX. La zone de porosité accrue adjacente aux demi-cylindres et pénétrant à une profondeur de quelques centimètres à fait l’objet d’études recourant à la nouvelle méthode 14C-PMMA. La pénétration des fractures radiales, considérablement plus profondes, a été étudiée par placement en utilisant un agent pénétrant coloré. Les résultats des études EDZ effectuées à Äspö et à Olkiluoto montrent que les caractéristiques de l’EDZ sont susceptibles d’être affectées de manière significative par la conception technique. Le volume vide de fracturation résultant du dynamitage autour du tunnel est du même ordre que celui de la zone concassée autour des trous de mine.service.

Two SAIMM colloquia The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is organizing two one-day colloquia in the State Pavilion, Milner Park showgrounds, Johannesburg, to coincide with the Electra Mining Exhibition on 16th and 17th September. Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

Cutting strong rock with a drag bit assisted by high-pressure water jets By M. HOOD. B.Sc. Hons. (Min. Eng.). B.Sc. (Mech. Eng.). A.M.I.M.M. (Visitor) Experiments are described that led to the discovery that coherent high-pressure water jets directed immediately ahead of drag bits while they are cutting strong rock reduce the magnitudes of the forces on the bits significantly. Tests were carried out to assess the effects of the pressure of the water jets on bit-cutting performance. The pressure was varied between 10 MPa and 50 MPa, the water flow rate being a constant 30 I/min. Over this pressure range, the force on the bit was reduced to the extent that the depth of cut of the bit was at least doubled with the point of impingement of the jets optimized. Forces on the bit were found to be particularly sensitive to the point of impingement of the water jets relative to the bit. The optimum configuration was found to be with two jets, one directed towards each corner of the bit and impinging on the rock approximately 2 mm ahead of the leading edge of the bit. Experiments in which a drag bit and high-pressure water jets were used to cut strong abrasive quartzite in the underground mining situation have demonstrated a potential increase of up to five times in the average depth of cut due to reduction of the forces on the bit. The results from the underground tests indicate that the life of the bit is improved significantly - by a factor of approximately two - when highpressure water jets are used.
