Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. "The mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant expansion in copper and cobalt production in recent years. The greater proportion of this expansion has arisen through processing of oxide ores. The design of metallurgical processes for these oxide ores is based on the conventional equipment and layout for processing of sulphide ores, and comprises milling followed by leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning. The physical characteristics of the oxide ores, however, provide the process design engineer with an opportunity to examine critically the principles on which equipment selection is based and to design processes better suited to these ores. In 2015, ERG Africa began a project to expand the leaching capacity of the Luita hydrometallurgical facility. A number of innovative changes to the conventional process design were included in the modified flow sheet, which were validated when the project reached design throughput in November 2017. Of these changes, the most novel presented an alternative approach to mitigate the impact of colloidal silica on the operation of the solvent extraction plant. Introduction ERG Africa operates the Luita hydrometallurgical facility located at Kakanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), treating malachite and heterogenite minerals to recover copper as electrowon cathode and cobalt as a hydroxide precipitate. The process was originally conceived as a heap leach operation followed by direct electrowinning of copper, with solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) of cobalt. In preparing the sized ore for the heap leach operations, the undersized ore fraction at a P80 of 625 µm was discharged to a fines storage facility for later processing. This fraction carried with it approximately 30% of the copper contained in the run-of-mine (ROM) ore feed, and an equivalent proportion of cobalt.In a subsequent development, the cobalt SX section was converted to a copper SX facility, the leached cobalt being recovered from a bleed stream from the copper heap leach circuit. The operating cost for the process as then installed placed this facility well in the fourth quartile of the industry cost curve. The initial Luita operation was established in 2010 at a time when metal prices were above long-term averages (copper above US$3.00 per pound; cobalt above US$20.00 per pound), and the drop in prices in 2015/2016 presented a major challenge. The London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price dropped below US$2.00 per pound, with cobalt dropping below US$10.00 per pound in Q1 2016. This set in motion a range of improvement initiatives for the Luita operation. Central to this was the installation of a tank leach circuit to process the discarded fines and a modified SX circuit to manage colloidal silica. The revised Luita circuit reached design capacity in November 2017 and has proven to be well suited to processing of the oxide ore feed. This process design challenges the boundaries of conventional thinking in the areas of leaching, solid/liquid separation, solution management, impurity management, and metal recovery, and is the subject of this paper."

The Los Bronces Development Project (LBDP) was approved in October 2007 by the Anglo American plc Board at a capital cost of some US$1.74B, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. The project represents a big step forward for the Los Bronces mine since it will increase the treatment rate by 140%, the mining rate by 64% and almost double copper production during the first four years of the project. This economy of scale will also position Los Bronces as a much bigger and efficient mining operation, better prepared to face adverse market scenarios and allowing Anglo to consolidate its position in base metals. The project addressed numerous scope alternatives such as plant capacity vs mine capacity, cut-off grade strategy to maximise value based on the existing flotation and leaching process, cutback strategy, etc. Main infrastructure aspects of the project are as follows: ?Dump area with 2400Mt capacity for waste and low grade material ?Mining equipment: 1 x electric shovel, 12 x 300t trucks, 1 x drill ?Primary crusher: 60? x 89? ?Three new power lines (144MW capacity) ?Grinding plant at 87kt/day nominal capacity (includes a 4.3km tunnel with a regenerative conveyor belt) ?Grinding plant: 1 SAG mill 40? x 25?, 2 ball mills ?Slurry pipeline (52 km from grinding to flotation plant) with five choke stations ?Flotation plant (rougher, cleaning, regrinding circuits and molybdenum flotation). The history of Los Bronces started in 1867 when it was discovered. In 1978 ENAMI (Government company) sold Los Bronces to Exxon for US$112M. The same year a snow avalanche destroyed San Francisco Flotation Plant. In 1979 the plant was rebuilt at 4.9kt/day and from 1979 to 2002 several plant expansions were made up to 54kt/day capacity. In 2002 Anglo acquired Los Bronces for US$1.3B. The 2002 resource and reserve statement showed reserves at 459Mt at 1.02%CuT and resources at 780Mt at 0.80%CuT. The 2007 statement shows reserves at 1,480Mt at 0.67%CuT and resources at 1,644Mt at 0.45%CuT. Defining the size of a plant expansion is the key challenge that any expansionary project faces. The scope of this paper is a general review of the project, describing all the mining techniques that were used to define the best options that maximise value. In this context, a range of plant capacities (from 58 to 230kt/day) combined with a range of mining capacities (from 83 to 166Mt/a) were evaluated in detail, defining for each option a mine plan, Capex and Opex, and cut-off grade strategy for flotation and leaching processes and the associated Net Present Value (NPV) that was used as the selection criteria. The Los Bronces mineral resources potential provides good growth opportunities for the mine beyond LBDP implementation, offering an exciting invitation to continue studying new initiatives that maximise the value of this deposit.

Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. The chemistry related to the adsorption of gold, uranium, and transition-metal ions onto algal biomass (activated carbon) is related to the genesis of the Witwatersrand. Detrital gold being washed into the early basin, together with cyanide generated in the atmosphere, would have solubilized as the stable aurocyanide complex, the necessary oxygen being produced from the photosynthesis of carbon dioxide by primitive algae. Pebble-type conglomerates, while providing for the free movement of solutions containing the vital nutrients for prolific algal growth, would have screened of the sunlight, which would otherwise have degraded any free cyanide in solution. With the subsequent decomposition of the algal deposits, it is surmised that carbon-rich layers having adsorptive properties similar to those of activated carbon formed in the conglomerates. Under these conditions, gold (silver) in solution would have been adsorbed selectively as the cyanide complex, together with uranium as the carbonate complex. Any transition-metal ions present would also have been adsorbed onto such a substrate. The subsequent burial and compression of the gold-rich conglomerate with temperatures rising to about 400DC would then have reduced the adsorbed gold to the metal in a single segregated gold-silver metal phase (95 to 99 per cent of the contained gold), while leaving behind a sulphide phase rich in iron, base metals, and arsenic and containing some gold and silver. The recrystalization of this later phase may explain the presence of the rather consistent contents of secondary pyrite in the Witwatersrand conglomerates. Similarly, uranium minerals, some rich in titanium and carbon, may also have formed. An adsorption model would explain the very consistent trends in the gold-to-silver ratios of individual reefs in the Witwatersrand, which suggest an extensive hydrothermal system approaching isothermal equilibrium. Also, as gold grades increase, so silver grades generally decrease, indicating the sequential displacement of silver by gold as classically obtained with activated carbon.

I read your paper in the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with great interest, and must compliment you on its brilliance. However, there are some questions I should like to ask, and certain points I should like to highlight. I should appreciate your comments. Written contribution by J.F. Curtis The comprehensive and finely detailed survey of, and proposals for, engineering education in South Africa reflects the author's wide experience in the needs for, and the provision of, such education. This paper wil make a major contribution to the enhancement of the profession of engineering and the improvement in quality of engineering activities in South Africa. Contribution by G.W. Annandalet I have studied your paper in some detail, and am of the opinion that it makes an important contribution to the topic of the development of technological manpower, which is currently being debated in South Africa at al levels. Debate on this topic has risen above the level of academic discussion; it has been discussed by the Economic Advisory Council of the President, and is being considered at Ministerial level. As you have pointed out, there are certainly many aspects that will have to be addressed in the resolution of the crisis in engineering education. A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (Stockholm) (Member), and G. J. C. YOUNG, B.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. IntroductionThe sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning (EW) circuits require an indepth understanding of the fundamental parameters as well as the practical requirements to optimize cellhouse productivity and capital cost. AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

Satellite observation of mine-dump vegetation by B. P. GILBERTSON, M.Sc. (Phys.) (Visitor) and D. T. WILLlAMSON, B.A., LLB., B.A. Hons. (Visitor) NASA's first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-I) was launched on 23rd July, 1972, and has subsequently gathered multispectral imagery of most of Southern Africa from an orbital altitude of 900 km. Images of the Witwaters rand area have been studied in an attempt to differentiate between mine dumps having varying degrees of vegetative cover. At this stage it is clear that the various mine dumps can be located and identified, and differences in vegetative cover can be seen and measured. Patterns of vegetative growth, some characteristic to particular dumps, can also be seen.

The Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand is organising, on behalf of the Government of Thailand and the International Tin Council, the Second Technical Conference on Tin. The Conference will be held at Sala Santitham, Bangkok from 18th to 22nd November, 1969. Papers will be grouped under three main headings: (i) Geology and prospecting; (ii) Mining and ore dressing; (iii) Miscellaneous, e.g. stimulating production, metallurgy, estimation of reserves etc. Pre-prints of papers will be circulated. A field trip to Southern Thailand has been arranged for 25th November to 2nd December, 1969. Details of the Conference and the field trip can be obtained from Mr. W. Historically, engineers and scientists, particularly those involved in the coal-mining industry, have been slow to adopt statistical methods. However, the need to obtain the maximum information .from expensive exploration and development programmes, and the current focus on total quality management, have led to a change in perceptions if classical statistical and geostatistical methods and their application as planning tools. Some if the underlying issues associated with the generally poor communications between statisticians and engineers/physical scientists, which contribute to some if the misconceptions relating to statistical methods, are discussed The potentially profitable application if a number if statistical techniques in the fields if geological evaluation and mine planning! development is also reviewed, with specific reference to the coal industry.

Recent advances in the design and performance of flotation equipment A General Meeting and Colloquium on the above topic was held on 12th March, 1975, at Kelvin House, Johannesburg. The Colloquium was attended by 250 delegates and was opened by the Immediate Past President, Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg, at 09h30. Obituary Mr Van Rensburg announced with regret the deaths of James Alfred Boyd, Life Fellow, and Jack Joseph Frankel, Fellow. Training of technicians The Institute has received a letter from The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers pointing out that there is considerable opportunity for the training of Coloured and Bantu technicians and artisans, and that the existing facilities will be extended as the demand for them increases.

The applicability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) in numerous qualitative applications has been demonstrated over the past five years in the South African mining industry. These applications include the delineation of faults and dykes, fracture mapping, delineation of shear zones, mapping of depth of weathering, and the delineation of contact between different rock types. The qualitative nature of the data collected using existing commercial GPR systems, often relying on expert interpretation, has however mitigated against the full scale routine application of GPR in the mining industry. The recent development of the RockRadar system by ISS International has, to a large extent, overcome these problems. The result is that quantitative rock-mass studies can now be performed with the RockRadar system.

Reichert cone concentrators are used successfully in many applications, but have as yet not found favour in the gold mining industry on the Witwatersrand, because, for optimum operation, the cones need to have specially designed feed-preparation and circuit details. In addition, good liberation of the valuable minerals is essential. Gravity tests, in which a pilot plant was used on refractory gold ore, showed that 94 per cent of the gold could be extracted after gravity concentration and preferential grinding, roasting, and cyanidation of the concentrate, whereas 96 per cent could be extracted by flotation followed by the same preferential treatment. However, the capital and operating costs for gravity separation are expected to be considerably lower than those for flotation.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

Value added blasting is a process methodology that links tasks and processes, with the aim to improve/enhance the technical application of explosives technology and initiating systems, resulting in improved output. The phases and steps of a typical value added blasting intervention are discussed in this paper. Each step having distinct purposes, principles and methodology. Primary fracture from an array of shotholes by c. M. LOWNDS. B.Sc. Hons. (Rhodes). Ph.D. (Cape) (Visitor) and P. C. SELIGMANN. B.Sc. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.
