THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1971-1972 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards: SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such permanent residents who hold university degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for postgraduate study at universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold university degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1970. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1971 and 31st March, 1972 and are provided to facilitate visits to British universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration. The closing date for applications is 31st October, 1970. THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE PROPERTIES OF LIQUID METALS Tokyo, September 1972 The Second International Conference on the Properties of Liquid Metals will be held under the auspices of The Japan Institute of Metals and The Physical Society of Japan from 3rd to 8th September, 1972 in Tokyo. The purpose of this conference is to continue and extend the efforts towards the objective of the First International Conference on the Properties of Liquid Metals at Brookhaven, 1966. The tentative Conference subjects presently planned are: Structure of Liquid Metals and Alloys; Atomic Transport Properties (Diffusion, Viscosity, etc.); Electronic States and Transport Properties; Thermodynamical Properties; Melting and Phase Transitions. ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COUNCIL AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 1971 THE PRESIDENT: We now come, ladies and gentlemen, to the annual report of the Council of the Institute-and our accounts for the year ended 30th June, 1971, and these documents are on your chairs; I know you probably haven't had time to study them yet, but I would like to highlight some of the things which I think are worth mentioning. I would ask you to take, first of all, ladies and gentlemen, the report of the Council as being read, and before moving adoption, however, there are certain salient points I wish to touch on, and I will leave the financial side of this entirely to our very competent and worthy, Honorary Treasurer, Mr Denis Maxwell.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Laboratory-scale testwork was undertaken to recover oxidic copper-cobalt minerals by froth flotation, which requires maintaining a certain sulphide level in the pulp. To improve control of the sulphide concentration, an electronic closed-loop system was designed that responds to the potential output of an ion-selective electrode. The PID control was improved by adding a pre-emptive control and a self-calibration feature; a data logging facility is also included. An inexpensive valve design was incorporated using locally available parts. The operating results of this control design are presented.

This paper presents an actor-critic reinforcement learning (RL) method to allocate trucks and shovels in open-pit mines, while defining short-term production scheduling of an industrial mining complex, given new information collected during operations. This new data obtained from sensors update the uncertainty of the orebody models. The RL agents interact with the mining complex environment; exploring the solution space, learning actions to improve metal production and equipment utilisation. A case study is presented at a copper mining complex, highlighting the method’s ability to adapt and make informed decisions while collecting new information.

Until recently, this dream has been realized only in the use of diamond for gemstones and abrasive applications where several tons of diamonds are now used on an annual basis. The vision of having large, high quality diamond as part of a broad engineering tool-kit for many diverse high tech industries is now becoming a reality however, with the advent of early stage commercial availability of single crystal and poly crystalline CVD diamond.

I have read with interest all the papers dealing with heat transfer and the setting of heat stress limits that have appeared during the past two decades. Scientifically speaking, most of them can be rated as being of a high standard, and some of them have been acclaimed internationally as masterpieces of logical and calculated reasoning. Weathering of ore minerals A short course on 'The Weathering of Ore Minerals and the Textural Evaluation of Base Metal Gossans' is to be given by Dr I.M. Reynolds in Grahamstown from 4th to 6th October, 1982.

The paper points out that bord-and-pillar mining is the most important method of coal extraction in South African underground coal mines, and advocates that pillar design procedures should be refined to make more rational allowance for the differences in strength properties between various coal seams and roof and floor strata. However, any deviations from well-established design procedures must be based on sound engineering principles and reliable data on the strength properties of the seams and strata concerned. Recent information indicates that practices for the protection of surface structures against underground mining should be revised.

The development of steels with improved abrasion-corrosion resistance for use in underground components in South African gold mines is described in terms of design, manufacture, and performance. Based on the concept of microstructural design, new compositions were formulated to provide the optimum structures and properties. Extensive laboratory tests were conducted, and an industrial melt was produced. The resultant materials were tested for fabricability and machinability, and various components were manufactured. According to the preliminary operational results, these alloys exhibited outstanding performance in wear-plate tests, and are very promising for general application in underground components.

Theoretical and engineering aspects of slimes-dam construction by G. W. DONALDSON, M.Sc. (Eng.)(U.C.T.), D.I.C. (Visitor) Tile paper reviews the recommendations made in 1959-60 as a result of research into slimes-dam construction and finds that these recommendations are still valid. The requirements for pollution control, vegetating, in situ leaching, and future development of slimes dams as building areas are considered as they affect the engineering aspects of slimes-dam construction, and it is found that these requirements can be met without any major changes to current recommended slimes-dam construction practice.

Float-sink analysis has wide application in the coal laboratory. This paper evaluates the established methods used for the float-sink analysis of fine coal, and then describes a new method and apparatus that can be used for material down to a few micrometres in size. The method is rapid and accurate, and requires only a small amount of sample. The results presented show close agreement with the float-sink analyses obtained by the more classical technique using separating columns. The new centrifugal method reduces the time required for the analysis by a factor of ten.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) held their fifth successive annual seminar at Observation City, Scarborough, in Perth on 15th November, 1990. The title of the seminar was 'Strategies for Grade Control'. The Seminar attracted 158 delegates, including 10 speakers. In addition to geoscientists, the attendees included mining engineers, metallurgists, and mining analysts. The welcoming address was given by Rob Duncan, Chairman of the Westem Australian Branch of AIG, who said there is a strong demand for this type of seminar in Western Australia (WA). It helps geoscientists to keep up with former colleagues and to keep abreast of technical developments.

The initial results obtained from the implementation of computer-controlled strategy on the milling circuit are reported. An analysis of these results showed that a peak-power pebble-mill controller on a high throughput hardrock wet-milling circuit reduces the stability of the system. It was concluded that the milling circuit should be regarded as a single system in which the measurement of grinding efficiency, circulating load, product size distribution, and feed rate should minimize the product variance and maximize the feed rate according to the grinding power available. Work is proceeding on such a system.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, and loading and hauling constitutes one of the major cost items on the mine. Because high productivity in loading and hauling results in large financial benefits, the following projects to improve productivity were implemented at Sishen: - a computerized truck-allocation system, - an overhead power-supply system for the dieselelectric driven rear-dump trucks, - an in-pit crusher and a belt-conveyor system. This paper concentrates on the truck-allocation system, with special reference to the improved productivity of loading and hauling resulting from the implementation of this system.

The paper reviews current understanding of the effect of ion implantation on the wear process, and the state-of-the-art of ion implantation as a commercially viable treatment to impart wear resistance. Ion implantation involves the firing of high-energy ions into the surface of a material, which modifies the surface properties and so causes a transition in the dominant wear mode. The process is best suited to specialized engineering applications involving critical dimensional tolerances or surface finishes, but has gained little industrial acceptance because of its poor reproducibility and the lack of a suitable method of inspection.

A review of copper hydrometallurgy by J. C. PAYNTER, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Copper hydrometallurgy is discussed with special reference to the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates under South African conditions. The following processes are described and illustrated: Sherritt Gordon's ammonia pressure leachilng, the Arbiter Process, sulphuric acid pressure leaching, roasting processes, the Cymet Process, and the ferric chloride process developed at the National Institute for Metallursy. These processes are then compared with respect to the form of sulphur produced (elemental sulphur or sulphate), the character of the iron product and the handling of different types of ore.

A new shaft system was required to replace stope face for the North Section of Harmony Mine and to allow for systematic opening up of the North Eastern Section. Owing to the economic circumstances at the time the project started, it became vital to alter the original planning and to sink the service shaft first. The MATLA coal-sinking headgear, a novel presinking arrangement, allowed sinking to continue to 108 m concurrently with the erection of the permanent sinking headgear and sinking winders. It is estimated that this arrangement resulted in a saving of two months on the overall project.

The modelling, simulation, and design of processes for the recovery of gold from solution by absorption on carbon require the combination of a suitable rate expression with a description of the flow conflguration of the system. By the use of a suitable rate expression from the literature, methods are presented for the design of multi-stage countercurrent absorption systems corresponding to the commonly used carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-column contacting systems. The sensitivity of the recovery to various design parameters is illustrated. These results have important implications in the choice and design of equipment.
