Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.

Fragmentation analysis is an essential part of the optimization process in any mining operation. The costs of loading, hauling, and crushing the rock are strongly influenced by the size distribution of the blasted rock. Several direct and indirect methods are used to analyse or predict fragmentation, but none is entirely applicable to fragmentation assessment in sublevel caving mines, mainly because of the limitations imposed by the underground environment and the lack of all the required data to adequately describe the rock mass. Over the past few years, measurement while drilling (MWD) data has emerged as a potential tool to provide more information about the in-situ rock mass. This research investigated if MWD can be used to predict rock fragmentation in sublevel caving. The MWD data obtained from a sublevel caving mine in northern Sweden were used to find the relationship between rock fragmentation and the nature of the rock mass. The loading operation of the mine was filmed for more than 12 months to capture images of loaded load-haul-dump (LHD) buckets. The blasted material in those buckets was classified into four categories based on the median particle size (X50). The results showed a stronger correlation for fine and medium fragmented material with rock type (MWD data) than coarser material. The paper presents a model for prediction of fragmentation, which concludes that it is possible to use MWD data for fragmentation prediction.

The ?AMIRA Metal Accounting Project? had its origin in a workshop held in Cape Town on 1 August 2001, with the title ?Challenges in Metal Accounting and Information Management?, which was organised by the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This workshop identified the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting as an industry-wide problem. Discussions which followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, ?Improving Metal Accounting?, in 2003. The primary objective of the project was to provide tools for improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product and to facilitate good corporate governance. The planned deliverables of the project were a series of research projects into aspects of metal balancing in different types of metallurgical operations, a Code of Practice on Metal Accounting, and a textbook on the subject which could serve as a guide for metal accounting practitioners and students studying the topic. An additional planned deliverable was the provision of a new variety of professional experts in metal accounting, through successful completion of the research projects. Researchers were engaged at the Universities of Cape Town, Queensland and Stellenbosch and the project was sponsored by five mining companies, including three of the largest global mining groups. Research Program Eight research projects were undertaken as part of the P754 project and these are described briefly here to indicate the scope of the project. University of Cape Town ?Development of a methodology for measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Namakwa Sands?. This project was based on the Namakwa Sands Separation Plant, with a data rich environment, and involved the investigation of measurement network design through the use of heuristics and the analysis of complex processing circuits. An industry-wide survey of current practice to facilitate the development of an expert system for plant accounting measurements was carried out. ?Metallurgical accounting design at the Waterval UG-2 Concentrator?. The objective of this project is to develop a model for predicting metal recoveries from the different components of a blended ore feed to a plant. ?Optimal measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Zincor?. This project provided a hydrometallurgical test case for the design and evaluation of a semi-automated optimal measurement network. Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. Ores from a single deposit may exhibit extensive variability in their mineralogy and texture. The ability to quantify this variability and link it to mineral processing performance is one of the primary goals of process mineralogy. This study focuses on the effect of alteration in three platinum group element ore samples from the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe – two of which were more pristine compared to the third, which was locally classified as ‘oxidized’ ore. These ores are known to be characterized by varying degrees of alteration, resulting in numerous challenges in flotation and affecting both grade and recovery. Alteration, by near-surface oxidation, of the valuable base metal sulphides and platinum group minerals resulted in lower flotation recoveries of Cu, Ni, Pt, and Pd. Evidence of incipient oxidation was more readily observed in the base metal sulphide assemblage than the platinum group mineral assemblage, even though the loss in recovery (because of oxidation) was most significant for Pd. Alteration through hydration resulted in a significant increase in mass pull and dilution of concentrate grade through the inadvertent recovery of naturally floating gangue comprising composite orthopyroxene and talc particles. In this study, the amount of naturally floating gangue was more strongly correlated with the talc grain size distribution than the grade of talc in the flotation feed. The oxidation and hydration alteration reactions are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although one may be more dominant than the other, giving rise to ore variability.

Fiber-Optic Sensing and UAV-Platform Techniques for Innovative Mineral Exploration (FUTURE) is a joint European Union and South African consortium project funded under ERA-NET Cofund ERA-MIN3. The project aims to develop cost-effective and novel seismic methods to image geological structures ahead of the mine face, ultimately leading to improved decision-making and safer mining practices. In this study we present results from numerical simulations conducted at South Deep Gold Mine for active in-mine seismic surveys. The study uses a finite differencing code known as WAVE3D, which models models the propagation of a seismic wave generated by stress pertubations that are applied to a defined grid. The numerical simulation model included two major ore bodies (Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef) and mine tunnels. The model was constrained using laboratory physical property measurements from underground borehole samples such as seismic velocities (e.g., compressional and shear waves) and bulk densities. Two case studies were created, one modelled the active shots and receivers on surface, and the other modelled the shots at depth (in a mine tunnel at ~4000 m depth) with receivers on surface. In both cases, the objective was to investigate the wavefield propagation through the rockmass between the mine tunnel and surface. The simulated wavefield produced by the source located along the mine tunnel was successfully recorded on surface. The surface-recorded wavefield exhibits clear one-way P-wave arrival times at approximately 450 ms to 500 ms, which can be used to calculate the surface-tunnel P-wave refraction tomogram. The results from the study were used to constrain the design, and for the acquisition and processing of the real surface and in-mine seismic surveys acquired under the FUTURE project.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

The demand for rare earth elements has increased around the world due to their application in a variety of technological advancements. Previous studies have evaluated the potential of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) hosted within the Permian coal deposits of the main Karoo Basin (MKB) in Southern Africa. However, not a lot of scientific research has gone into the Triassic coal deposits. The Triassic coals in South Africa were the first coals to be exploited for their thermal use in the 1880s, but the discovery of the higher rank and more abundant Ecca coal deposits led to the Triassic coals remaining largely unexplored. The demand for rare earth elements has sparked interest in these coal deposits as potential sources for valuable minerals. Late Triassic coal deposits in Lesotho have previously not been well documented and these low-rank coals can be a potential source of rare earth elements. This study aims to characterize and evaluate the potential of REY in the Taung coal deposit, southwest of Lesotho. Coal and associated argillaceous samples from the Taung coal deposit were analyzed using microscopic petrography for coal characterization and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the amount of rare earth elements. Taung coal is classified as middle medium rank D bituminous coal. The total REY content in Taung coal and its associated rocks range from 162.9 ppm to 855.1 ppm, which is significantly higher than the upper continental crustal (UCC) average. The average critical REY concentration of samples from the Taung coal deposit is 189.4 ppm, which is three times higher than that of the Chinese Bayan Obo deposit. Samples classified as very promising and promising because of their outlook coefficients, are found to contain up to 77% of critical REY. It is envisioned that the area could be a prime deposit for these REY.

Preparation of suitable core specimens for physico-mechanical testing s not always possible, particularly for soft and clay-bearing rocks. Although several indirect test methods have been proposed to predict the properties of rocks, specimen preparation from soft rocks for some indirect tests is still difficult. For such cases, the needle penetration test has been developed. In this paper we present a study on the predictability of the physico-mechanical properties of pyroclastic rocks from the needle penetration index (NPI). The NPI, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity tests were performed in the laboratory on specimens from ten different locations in Turkey. Correlations were established between the NPI values and the physico-mechanical properties. Strong correlations were observed between NPI and both UCS and BTS. General correlations were found between NPI and both density and porosity.

The Witwatersrand Basin contains by far the most gold ever found, and has hosted mining from its discovery in 1886 to the present. For many years, South Africa was the world’s largest producerof gold, nearly all of which came from the Witwatersrand. Since 2000, South Africa has fallen back several positions because of declining gold output. There are many complex and varied reasons for this; however, declining gold resources in the Witwatersrand Basin are not one of them. As far as the author knows, there are no qualified estimates in the literature of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. This paper collects mining data from several sources and then, using elementary gold accounting and error analysis, attempts to estimate the amount of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. It includes gold underground in existing and defunct mines, in evaluated ore resources, and dumps. Compiled data from 1887 to 2019 shows that 50 200 t of gold were produced by Witwatersrand mines, while it is estimated that a further 48 100 t remainunderground, both within and outside of mine leases, a further 1 600 t on the surface in tailings,and an unknown amount in rock dumps. Nearly all of this gold will remain inaccessible with current mining methods, and major technical developments in mining will be necessary before any of the gold can be categorized as a code-compliant resource or reserve. To win this prize, the mining industry will have to rethink its approach to mining, both in old mining leases and in the unexploited ground. It will also have to find effective means of preventing gold theft and informal mining, which are on the rise.

Ore deposits are becoming more complex to mine as a result of the exhaustion of surface and other easily mined deposits. There is also increasing socio-political pressure to design more environmentally sound, sustainable, and safe mining practices. Wang and Ma designed a mining method for coal, similar to a modified drift and fill using a continuous miner to take sequential cuts (rooms) that are subsequently backfilled. The authors have modified the concept to make it more autonomous, safer, and less costly using highwall coal mining techniques, modified and adapted for underground applications. The method is more flexible than longwall mining and the percentage extraction would seem to be in the same range. In addition because of the backfilling, surface subsidence would not be a major issue and could be more effectively managed.

Underground mining in high rock-stress environments can induce unanticipated dynamic rockmass deformation, posing a serious risk to the workforce. Data collected by seismic networks are imperative for the design-as-you-mine process. Often an inappropriate assessment of the seismic hazard is done when unnecessary data are included in analytical techniques, particularly short-term time frames. Depending on the methodology or application of data analysis and interpretation, some of the information may not be relevant and even detract from the objective. By using the spatial event clusters associated with active workplaces to define the shape and size of the polygons for data selection for subsequent analysis, a problematic subjective component can be eliminated. The mining of tabular reefs in South Africa, be they gold- or platinum group metals, is very extensive, and underground workplaces are often widespread. Production stoppages are very costly, especially for marginal mines, so there is just cause not to evacuate an entire operation’s workforce following the occurrence of a large mining-induced seismic event. A rationale based on the damaging peak particle velocities (PPV) of the past seismicity can exclude the unaffected underground personnel and allow a quick orderly withdrawal where required. Micro-deformation may precede rockbursting, which can occur on-shift close to the workface. A mine-wide array of geophones suitable for the accurate location and analysis of seismicity may not be able to detect these higher-frequency emissions. Inexpensive but fit-for-purpose accelerometers, providing real-time, continuous measurement of acoustic rockmass deformation near the workplace, integrated through underground and surface communications networks, are shown to record ‘rock-talk’, clearly distinguishable from the instrument background noise, which can be in the order of hours leading up to an imminent damaging seismic event.

SAMREC (The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves) Clause 7 notes that ‘Documentation detailing Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves from which a Public Report is prepared must be prepared by, or under the direction of, and signed by a Competent Person.’ Similar statements with respect to Competent Valuators (CVs) and Qualified Reserves Evaluators (QREs) are contained in the SAMVAL (South African Code for the Reporting of Mineral Asset Valuations) and SAMOG (South African Code for the Reporting of Oil & Gas Resources) codes respectively. What does it mean to be a Competent Person (CP) in the context of compiling/signing-off on SAMCODE (South African Mineral Code) compliant documents? What do the registration and experience requirements mean? Who is ultimately responsible for the report and what does such responsibility prescribe?

Tower mill is considered to have a better regrinding and fine grinding effect compared with ball mill, and its application is much broader. The spiral agitator of the tower mill is driven by the motor. Media inside the mill is under the combined actions of the spiral mechanism, the cylinder, and media nearby, and these parameters are key factors affecting the grinding effect. However, it is not possible to obtain detailed information of kinematic law of media based only on traditional laboratory experiments, let alone the relationship between parameters of kinematic law of media and grinding effect. Experimentation is the only way to develop industrial equipment. However, this is time-consuming and costly, which hampers the further research of the tower mill’s grinding mechanism. The paper selects two structural parameters (gap between the edge of the spiral agitator and the cylinder wall, ratio between the diameter of cylinder and that of the spiral shaft.) and three operating parameters (diameter of media, filling ratio, the speed at the edge of the spiral agitator) as variables to do an orthogonal designed experiment of five factors, four levels, and thereby obtaining change law of grinding indicators of different parameters. Experimental equipment may be simplified to enable an applicable simulation strategy. Simulation based on a discrete element method is conducted to obtain the change law of the speed of media, collision frequency, normal force, and radial force. The relational curve between parameters of kinematic law of media and energy consumption of grinding is clarified, and key factors affecting grinding efficiency are determined. Those factors will be used for optimising the design and operating process. The research result of this paper obtained from laboratory experiments and computer simulation provides data support and theoretical bases, and has directive meaning and applicable value for tower mill’s optimisation and large-sized design. The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology's financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. Loading and hauling of ore and waste are the key operations of an opencast coal mine and entail a high operational cost. The productivity of a mine can be increased by reducing the cycle time of loading equipment as well as utilizing dumpers optimally. In this paper we discuss the impact of rock type, bucket fill factor, rock fragmentation, the height of the cut, and angle of swing of the bucket on shovel performance. A time study is conducted on shovels in an opencast coal mine with experimental blasts of rocks to assess the impact of different factors on the performance of the shovel. Based on the data, the authors applied multiple regression (MR) and artificial neural network (ANN) techniques to develop different models for the prediction of the shovel cycle time. Developed models are validated by comparing the predicted data with actual field data. With the help of the best model, the plausible fleet size is determined in order to utilize the shovel and dumper optimally and to improve the performance of shovel–dumper operation.
