Before the World War the use of zirconium and its compounds was largely experimental and confined almost wholly to Germany and Austria . Occasionally small lots of zirconium ore had been produced in the United States ( 1,000 pounds in 1869 , 26 tons in 1883 , and 3,000 pounds in 1903 ) and used (with monazite ) in the manufacture of various lighting devices , especially incandescent gas mantles ; but it was not until 1906 that the discovery of the natural zirconium oxide in large quantities near Sao Paulo , Brazil , first gave promise that a zirconium industry eventually might be developed . Edward Rietz , who worked the Brazilian deposits , interested German chemists in extending the use of zirconium , and by 1911 trade journals were listing German firms as manufacturers of compounds or products derived therefrom . For a time zirconia was one of the various oxides used in the Nernst lamp . It was used also for crucibles and hearths as refractory material ; in the manufacture of chemical utensils ; in enamels ; in the place of bismuth subnitrate for defining Röntgenray pictures of the stomach ; as a pigment ; in medicine ; and in a number of other ways . The Germans were credited also with producing a remarkable zirconium steel , which , it was claimed , was much superior to other alloy steels . During the World War the United States Government investigated the possibilities of zirconium , as well as those of other steel -hardening elements , and a large automobile manufacturer actually purchased a substantial quantity of ore with the purpose of employing zirconium in automobile steels . Immediately after the armistice the Government ceased its investigations ; but despite the difficulties experienced by various investigators in reaching concordant results , interest in the use of zirconium as a steel -hardening agent , as well as in other uses of the element and its compounds , continued . In 1918 the Foote Mineral Co. , which had been interested in zirconium for several years , was exploiting the deposit in Brazil formerly worked by the Germans and was supplying zirconia in the form of ore , brick , and cement for refractory and other purposes . About the same time the Electro Metallurgical Co. , which before the entrance of the United States into the war was experimenting with zirconium alloys , supplied in tonnage quantities the demand for these alloys . In 1919 it was reported that American manufacturers , after several years of research, were producing in commercial quantities pure zirconium oxide , which was finding a place in the manufacture of small refractory articles , scorifying dishes , crucibles , tubes , and one- piece furnace linings . In 1920 the lowering of the price of zirconium metal powder ( because of improved metallurgical methods ) promised the production of the metal on a semicommercial scale . In 1924 the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. introduced a new opacifying agent , " Opax , " made from zircon . A year or two later some of the large pottery manufacturers became interested in the use of zirconium oxide as an opacifying agent , the increased production of titanium pigments having resulted in the production of zirconium as a by-product at a price that could compete with tin oxide . In 1928 it was reported that the industrial use of zirconium oxide was increasing steadily in the manufacture of brick , crucibles , and other refractory products , such as high- temperature cements . Electrical resistance heating to effect thermal fragmentation of semiconductive rock was examined by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were carried out on copper-bearing ores of the Nonesuch Shale Formation in the laboratory and in the the field at White Pine, Mich. Fieldwork included primary and secondary breakage tests. Heating tests on in situ rock failed to produce thermal dam-age to an extent considered useful; however, boulders up to 30 ft3 were effectively broken by the method. Power input to the test rock was taken from a 50-kV, 5-amp dc power supply.

A number of chemical techniques have been applied to manganese ores from three areas of Aroostook County, Maine. Although large tonnages of these ores have been proved, they are low grade, and their exploitation has awaited a suitable beneficiation scheme. As conventional ore-dressing methods had failed to yield satisfactory results, attention was turned to chemical procedures. Leaching with dilute (7-percent) H2S04 extracted over 90 percent of the manganese from ore of the Dudley farm area, consuming 3.8 pounds of acid per pound of manganese extracted. Ores from the Littleton Ridge and Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain areas were less amenable to this treatment, yielding approximately 80 and 60 percent of their Mn content, respectively. To increase the percentage extraction of manganese in the latter two ores, a number of factors were varied, including (1) acid concentration in the extracting solution, (2) ratio of acid to Mn in the slurry, and (3) preliminary heat treatment of the ore with a reducing agent. Other acids, including HNO3, HC1, and H2SO3, were tried also; however, no significant improvements in the Mn leached from Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain ore were made. The manganese extraction of Littleton Ridge ore was raised to 90 percent by providing 9 to 11 pounds of HNO3 per pound of Mn in the ore.

Every finding of the year's work, obtained under stress to meet present objectives, contributed to postwar needs, because the very nature and constitution of petroleum and natural gas require that research be conducted along the same general lines whether the results are applied in peace or war. More than 40 reports were submitted to the Petroleum Administration for War and others concerned with (1) evaluation of crude oils to determine their content of aviation-gasoline base stock, (2) evaluation of base stocks for blending with high-octane, synthetically manufactured components, (3) analyses of naphthas to determine their content of various types of hydro-carbons, such as benzene and toluene, and (4) the improvement of quality of marginal base stocks to meet future requirements of aviation gasoline. This upgrading of marginal stocks is being attained by selective distillation and chemical and catalytic removal of sulfur compounds. Asphalts were studied with respect to the characteristics of their various constituents in order to compound them, in the same way that aviation fuels now are being "built" to meet exacting requirements. The work previously initiated to give the industry fundamental data on thermodynamics of hydrocarbons progressed satisfactorily, and the heats of combustion of 10 hydrocarbons in the lubricating oil -range of petroleum were determined. Thermodynamic data requiring highly specialized techniques are so broad in application that their commercial usefulness is not yet fully appreciated.

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with tie intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

Sixteen nonaqueous techniques conceived to replace the current aqueous scheme for separating hafnium and zirconium tetrachlorides were re- viewed and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The methods are divided into two classes: separation by fractional volatilization of the tetrachlorides, which takes advantage of the higher volatility of hafnium tetrachloride; and separation by chemical techniques, based on differences in chemical behavior of the two tetrachlorides. The criteria used to evaluate separation methods were temperature, pressure, separation factor per equilibrium stage, complexity, compatibility with existing technology, and potential for continuous operation. Three processes were selected as being most promising: (1) high-pressure distillation, (2) extractive distillation from a molten salt, and (3) preferential reduction of gaseous ZrC14. Any of the proposed nonaqueous Hf-Zr separation schemes must be supplemented with additional purification to remove trace impurities.

Background Investigators collaborated to develop a new training module that would address the hazards of working around highwalls. Such a module would be applicable to surface mines and road construction sites, both of which require personnel to work under and on top of steep and often unstable slopes.

The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

The phase-boundary pressure required to maintain a natural hydrocarbon fluid in a single phase must be considered in planning the recovery of reservoir liquids by miscible-phase processes. The change in the phase-boundary pressure at reservoir temperature that results when a light component or a mixture of light components is added to a reservoir fluid is an especially important consideration. The cricondenbar pressure (maximum phase-boundary pressure) and the critical pressure are unique correlated pressures that have been utilized to calculate the change in phase-boundary pressure that may result when the composition of a reservoir liquid is altered by an additive. In this study one reservoir oil and three gas-condensate fluids are used as examples. Correlations pertaining to the critical and cricondenbar states in chapters 4 and 5 of Bureau of Mines Monograph 10 (3)5 were used to demonstrate how butane and lighter components added to these reservoir fluids affect their phase-boundary pressures.

This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British committee . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. The drilling of horizontal boreholes as a means of degasification in advance of mining has been tried at Jim Walter Resources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. In a joint venture with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a series of horizontal drainage boreholes have been drilled in the panels of an advancing continuous miner section with impressive results. The combined methane gas production rate has ranged from 205,000 to 680,000 cfd (cubic feet per day} with individual "in-seam" horizontal holes producing up to 332,000 cfd. The methane liberation from the ribs for the entire panel length has decreased from an average of 8.75 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per 100 feet of entry to 4.05 cfm per 100 feet, a 54 per cent reduction. The actual gas concentration as measure at the surface discharge point normally ranges from 85 per cent to 95 per cent methane. As a consequence of the significant reduction in methane liberation rates from the panels of the section, a 50 per cent increase in productivity from the section has been realized.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines undertook a basic investigation of collimated abrasive water-jet behavior because a more complete understanding of the fundamental process may lead to further technical advances. Laboratory experiments used 2-mm water-jet nozzles and new entrainment apparatus to analyze collimated abrasive water jets operating under varied conditions. Maximum water pressure was 69 MPa to permit use of conventional hoses with a burst-to-operating-pressure ratio of 4. Nozzle and induction line pressures, abrasive induction rates, and jet reactive thrust forces were recorded for each operating condition. Average jet velocity and power were determined from component mass flow rates and reactive thrust force measurements. Relative velocity and cross-sectional distribution of abrasive particles were determined using impact analysis techniques. Other jet characteristics were determined photographically. Properties of free water jets, collimated water jets, and collimated air-water jets were determined for comparison.

To increase the capability to predict the effectiveness of a flame arrester in the cooling of hot combustion gases expelled through a flame arrester, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an equilibrium. model and one-and three-dimensional transient thermal models of a flame arrester, which were used to predict the temperature evolution within the arrester and the maximum temperature at the external surface of the arrester. The models account for convective and conductive heat transport within the arrester and radiative losses at the exit surface. The gas flow through the arrester is established from an empirically derived relationship between the gas velocity and the pressure gradient across the arrester. Lateral heat loss from the arrester to the enclosure wall is accounted for in the three-dimensional model. The model calculations for maximum outside surface temperature of the arrester showed an approximate agreement with measured values for vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratios between 12 and 28 in2?ft-3.

This report gins the results of a study conducted hy the Ilnreau of Mines for the purpose of informing the petroleum industry on the recent progress in the de,·elopment nncl application of the absorption process for recO\·ering gasoline from natural gas. The work has been undertaken entirely with regard to plant practice and for the purpose of describing the features and the operation of units of the plants now in use, the improvements that have been made, and the reasons for any ehanges eontemplated by the engineers in eharge· of the plants studied. Throughout the United States the impro,·ements in the absorption process that are under consideration by engineers not only widen practice so as to include gases at all pressures and percentages of gasoline content, but seem to be dewloping definite standards as to dimensions of towers, l"elocities of flow, saturation of oi~ areas of eooling surfaces, and quantities of menstruum to be circulated. Although perfect practice has by no means been attained, the writer belie,·es thnt a description of the current practice at ,·arious plants, including those ob,'iously more efficient features that each plant hns <le\"eloped and uses at one or another stage of treatment, will intere;; t and possibly help all persons operating or designing absorption plants.

The development of a completely water - free expendable graphite mold material , useful for reactive metal castings , has been detailed . Mixing and curing variables have been evaluated both by physical testing of the material itself and by castings of titanium , zirconium , and hafnium . The blend of powdered graphite , cornstarch , dextrin , cereal binder , linseed oil , and Carbowax -4000 is a successful mix when mulled in a carbon dioxide atmosphere , and properly cured and fired . The primary advantage of this material is its adaptability to standard foundry techniques ; i . e . , core blowing and hand ramming . Temperatures in the curing and firing cycles do not exceed 960 ° C , and no vacuum firing is required .

The Bureau of Mines has completed 4 yr of deep-bed filtration research comparing the efficiencies of granular magnesium oxide (MgO) and conventional filter sand in single- and dual-medium filters when filtering mineral-processing and mine waters. Bench and field evaluation tests were conducted using water types ranging from synthetic suspensions of asbestos, kaolin, metal hydroxides, and milled sand to process waters from magnetite beneficiation, iron ore flotation, granite cutting, and a steel mill. Even though the turbidity reductions were similiar, MgO filters were found to be advantageous when filtering water pretreated with alum because the volume throughput before breakthrough (turbidity > 1 NTU unit) was much more for the MgO filter than for the sand filter. Reduced head loss owing to the greater porosity of the MgO filter beds is potentially the most beneficial advantage in employing MgO as the filter medium, especially when filtering water pretreated with polymer flocculants. Granular MgO (periclase) is durable and can be backwashed Like sand. It is compatible with anthracite in a dual-medium filter and apparently is not poisoned by dissolved metals in the process water. No single solid-removal mechanism could be identified for the improved filtration observed with granular MgO.

In July 1947, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, started an investigation of zirconium alloys with the object of determining the suitability of such alloys for high-temperature applications. This report covers the preliminary study of about 25 zirconium-rich alloy systems with respect to preparation, fabrication, tensile properties, metallographic structures; constitution, and heat resistance. Obviously, each system could not be investigated thoroughly, and this publication can be regarded only as a first approach. The more promising individual alloy systems will be studied in greater detail and reported in subsequent publications. The study of zirconium alloys on such a scale has been made possible by the U.S. Bureau of Mines developments in the past 5 years On producing zirconium metal. This basic process is similar to that developed by Kroll for producing ductile titanium metal and consists essentially of reducing zirconium chloride by means of molten magnesium. The Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Oreg., has produced several thousand pounds of ductile metal in this manner and has a pilot plant producing over 300 pounds of metal per week. Alloys were prepared by melting Bureau of Mines zirconium and the best available grade of alloying element in graphite, with suitable provisions for preventing oxidation. The ingots were quartered longitudinally and sheath-swaged at 850° c. to 3/8-inch diameter rod. Two of those rods were send to Wright Field for room-temperature and 1,200° F. tensile properties. The remaining two sections were used for metallographic, hardness, heat-treatment, and heat-resistance studies. The salient features of this investigation are summarized in table 1.

Boron compounds have been considered for many years as possible additions to iron and steel. A very recent use of boron-steel rods was for the control of neutron intensity in the graphite-uranium pile at the Clinton plutonium plant(130).4/ Norris(129) reports that slags containing boric oxide reduce the ferrous oxide content of steels and thereby the aluminum required for deoxidation. Boron is not considered an alloying element, but minute amounts produce what is often called a "needled" steel. The study of a series of iron-boron alloys by convenient steps, starting with iron containing no boron, indicated that boron was a hardening agent and made the iron very difficult if not impossible to forge. Then came the discovery that very minute traces of boron are quite different from the smallest amount previously thought worthy of study.

This report is the result of a series of coal-cleaning tests using a dense-medium cone-type washer. Detailed results are given for 2 tests using a magnetite medium and 4 tests using a pulverized-refuse medium. Approximately 120 float-and-sink tests and over 500 separate chemical analyses were made in conjunction with these tests. In these tests higher recovery efficiencies and sharper separations were obtained when using a magnetite medium, especially on coal sizes below one-half inch. When sizes above 1 inch at low specific gravities of separation are cleaned, the pulverized refuse medium compared favorably with the magnetite medium.
