In a previous study, the e?cacy of commercial and prototype impactors for sampling diesel particulate matter (DPM) in coal mines was investigated. Laboratory and ?eld samples were collected on quartz-?ber ?lters and analyzed for organic and elemental carbon. Coal dust contributed a minimal amount of elemental carbon when commercial cascade impactors and prototype impactors, designed by the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the US Bureau of Mines (BOM), were used to collect submicrometer dust fractions. Other impactors were not as e?ective at excluding coal dust. The impactors evaluated in that study were either not commercially available or were multi-stage, expensive, and di?cult to use for personal measurements. A commercial version of the BOM impactor, called the DPM Cassette, was recently introduced by SKCs. Tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the DPM Cassette for measuring diesel-source elemental carbon in the presence of coal dust. Bituminous coals from three mines in two di?erent coal provinces were examined. The dust particle diameters were small and the coal dust contained a high percentage of carbon, there by giving a worst-case condition for non-anthracite coal mines. Results for the DPM Cassette were essentially identical to those obtained by the BOM impactors in a previous study. At a respirable coal dust concentration of 5.46mg m3, which is 3.8 times the regulatory limit, the DPM Cassette collected only 34µg m3 of coal-source elemental carbon.

The rapid growth and development of the Soviet coal industry rank the U. S. S. R. with the United States among the leading coal-producing countries. The coal resources of the Soviet Union are among the largest in the world, although coal development has been hindered by the disadvantageous location of the coal deposits with respect to the major consuming centers. Although coal production in the U. S. S. R. reached a record high, the total energy output of mineral fuels in 1957 was still far below that of the United States because a significant part of Soviet coal output was lignites or lower rank coals. Although the Soviet coal industry soon may exceed that of the United States in tons produced, the energy equivalent of Soviet output will be considerably less because of the inclusion of a high percentage of lower rank coals. Energy sources in the United States also involve large quantities of oil and natural gas, whereas coal supplies most primary energy in the Soviet Union.

SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Domeland Addition (5207) and Woodpecker (5206) RARE II areas during the summer of 1979. These study areas were examined to determine the presence or absence of mineral resources and reserves and where possible, to estimate values. The study areas are 9 air mi northeast of Kernville, California, and encompass 47,400 acres of primarily granitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith with some scattered exposures of older metasedimentary, volcanic, and metavolcanic rocks. These other rock units partially surround the exposed batholith in the Domeland Wilderness and consist mostly of late Paleozoic quartzites, mica schists, marbles, and meta-volcanics, Mesozoic quartz diorite and gabbro intrusives, and local Tertiary basalt and andesite flows.

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine safety and health trainers that can be used for both new-miner training and annual refresher training. Background For the past 3 years, NIOSH has been developing training materials for mine safety trainers in response to gaps identified during stakeholder meetings. Most materials have been directed to the hazards of underground mines, but the recent passage of Part 46 of CFR 30 required new-miner and annual refresher training in aggregate operations. One result was the identification of another audience needing basic information about safety in mining. Trainers characterized trainees in this segment of the industry primarily as young males, many of whom had little work experience. Approach Training specialists from the Arizona State Mine Inspector’s Office approached NIOSH researchers early in2002 about the possibility of a collaborative project to develop safety training materials for new trainees in aggregate operations. A preliminary search of MSHA accident statistics identified over a dozen common hazards that could be targeted in a training video. A storyline was developed for review by safety specialists in the aggregate industry, and a script was written to cover the selected hazards. Although the target audience was primarily new hires, the finished video was also to be relevant to more experienced workers.

During a mine fire or other emergency, it may be desirable to reverse the airflow in order to provide an escapeway or to isolate a fire. Also, in colder areas, the airflow may be reversed to prevent ice buildup. When reversing main mine fans, the mine operator usually does not know what operating characteristics of flow and pressure to expect. Laboratory and field tests of vane axial main mine fans in the 7- to 9-ft diameter size range were conducted to establish forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions and at typical mine installations. The data obtained suggest that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. There is also evidence that reverse performance can be predicted for a family of blade angles and a given hub to tip ratio. Generally, quantity of air is 30 to 65% less in reverse than when operating in the normal forward mode.

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, controlling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech­nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to develop and/or improve control technologies that reduce the respirable dust exposure of workers in underground coal mines. The goals of this research involve optimizing the use of water sprays and ventilating air, as well as, evaluating emerging control tech­nologies. An overview of dust controls typically utilized in underground US coal mines will be provided. An update on ongoing PRL research efforts that are evaluating new control technologies will also be presented.

A voltage regulator was added to prevent false trips with line voltage variations. 2. A Ground Wire Trap was designed to eliminate problems with parallel paths and provide spark suppression. 3. A three phase filter was designed to reduce 60 Hz leakage current. 4. A portable tester was designed to permit complete test of installed systems. 5. The design was modified to insure trip with an open ground wire in the event of a failure of any one semi-conductor component.

Mineral production in Fiji, a group of 322 volcanic islands and atolls of Melanesia in the southern Pacific Ocean, continued to be dominated by gold. However, the Fijian mineral sector remained a minor factor as a source of export earnings, Government revenues, and employment, generating only 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), estimated as $1.2 billion.2 The largest and most important mining operation was the Vatukoula gold mine on the north side of Viti Levu, the main island. The Vatukoula Mine has been in prduction since 1932, producing about 3.8 million troy ounces of gold and 1.3 million troy ounces of silver to date. In April 1983, the large Australian mining firm, Western Mining Corp. (WMC), assumed operation of the mine in a joint venture with Emperor Gold Mining Co. Ltd., which operated the mine previously. The WMC takeover of the mine management was expected to bring in additional capital and technological expertise in order to modernize operations, increasing both efficiency and output. During the year, rate of recovery was only about 75% of the gold contained in the ore and only 40% of the contained silver. Mining at the Vatukoula Mine was done using bath opencut and underground methods, with about 60% of the ore mined attributed to the underground operations.

To say that the treatment and handling of the "fines" is the most difficult phase of coal preparation is probably an understatement of facts. It is the fine sizes from about 1/16-inch to 0 that are mainly responsible for the inescapable sludge and slurry problems at plants using wet methods of preparation. Sludge and slurry are a problem from the standpoints of both cleaning and dewatering. They cannot be cleaned satisfactorily by "gravity" methods, which are used so extensively on coarser Sizes, due to the fact that fine sizes, particularly from 65-mesh to 0, do not follow the same laws of settling as do the coarser sizes. Although fine sizes are cleaned more successfully on wet-wash tables than in jigs, even tables as usually operated in coal-preparation plants fail on sizes below 100-mesh. As to other phases of the, sludge and slurry problem, wet coal preparation plants are almost universally beset with troubles in connection with the recovery and dewatering of the fine sizes from about 14-or 20-mesh to 0. The sizes finer than 100-mesh further complicate the problems in a wet preparation plant by their tendency to stay in suspension and build up a troublesome load of solids in the circulating water. In order to prevent too much trouble from this source, it is, customary at most plants to bleed a fair-sized stream out of the circulating system continuously and replace it by addition of fresh make-up water. The slurry water withdrawn from the circuit is usually run to waste, in which case it carries with it a considerable amount of fine coal, thus increasing the "washer loss." Another evil results from wasted slurry water in that quite often it finds its way into creeks and larger streams, creating stream-pollution problems.

A CLAY, sand, and gravel deposit known as the "buried valley" of the Susquehanna River is situated in the Northern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania near Wilkes-Barre. The presence of this buried valley and the uncertainty regarding the extent and physical condition of the water-bearing valley-fill deposits have made great care necessary in mining operations to avoid breaking the strata between the mine workings and the valley-fill deposits to the extent that inundation of the mine workings would follow. The principal factor that threatens to cut short the life of the anthracite industry, to curtail production, and to affect the economic structure of the people and business dependent on anthracite for their livelihood is inundation of anthracite mines (6,7).3

A mineral survey of the Fisher Gulch RARE II area (A5299), Trinity County, California was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. The area is underlain by the Salmon Hornblende Schist. Tonalite stocks 1.5 mi (2.8 km) to the east and northeast of the area intrude the schist and are closely associated with the nearby nines (Cox, 1967). The mines have quartz veins containing sulfides and gold in shears trending east to north past in the schist and tonalite (Hotz, 1972). Strewn and terrace gravel s occupy most of the drainages, many have yielded substantial quantities of gold.

METALLURGICAL ACTIVITY in 1963 was again dominated by the insatiate demands of research and development conducted in conjunction with the nation's defense and aerospace programs. An increasing effort was noticeable throughout the year, however, to apply to the commercial field many of the processes and techniques that have been developed by government-sponsored research. Particularly effective has been the Industrial Applications Program of the National Aeronautic and Space Agency through which many of the technological advancements made during the course of NASA research and development have been published and released to the public. POWDER TECHNOLOGY Powder metallurgy techniques for fabricating metals, not long ago declared outmoded because of improved casting and shaping methods, have since made an astonishing comeback. Traditionally mechanical pressing of powder shapes has been employed when melting and casting was difficult or impossible, when phase relationships needed to be sidestepped, or when machining costs could be avoided. Hence, it has long been used for producing relatively small special shapes of high-melting metals and alloys. Small iron parts produced with a punch and die have been common for many years, but powder metallurgy techniques are now applicable to a wide range of materials and items. Hard-to-handle materials including refractory metals and their alloys are now rolled, forged, or extruded from billets made by sintering isostatically compacted powders. The major element of the powder metallurgy industry still comprises iron shapes, however, and two-thirds of the annual 100,000 tons of powder metallurgy products are made of iron. The largest single user of powder-forming techniques is the automobile industry which currently consumes 14,000 to 16,000 tons of iron powder per year. A typical 1963 model auto contained more than 100 pressed powder parts (e.g., transmission gears, timing gears, sprockets, ball joint suspensions) totaling 5 to 7 pounds per car. This report gives the results of 26 tests of a four-pass Edgemoor boiler fired with powdered coal at the Lakeside station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The tests were made by the fuel section of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation and the operating department of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The object of the tests was to determine the thermal efficiencies and capacities obtainable by burning powdered coal under large central-station boilers, and the possibility of operating such boilers continuously at high efficiency and capacity without destructive effect on the furnaces and without difficulties in refuse removal. In any system for burning pulverized coal the furnace is the most important part because, to justify the cost of pulverizing, the powdered coal must be burned with higher efficiency than coal fired with mechanical stokers. In other words, it is the furnace that by giving higher thermal efficiency must pay for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the pulverizing equipment. No matter how simple the apparatus for the preparation of pulverized coal may be, or how simple the pulverizing process, unless the furnace is so designed that it can be operated continuously with high thermal efficiency, the whole system is a failure. For high thermal efficiency the coal must be burned almost completely with low excess air. But low excess air and complete combustion give high furnace temperature, which in turn causes erosion of the furnace lining and fusion of the ash; and removal of the fused ash is difficult. The necessity of complete combustion with low excess air thus brings with it these two important problems in the design of a furnace for burning powdered coal: 1, Prevention of erosion of the furnace lining; 2, easy removal of refuse from the furnace. For the purpose of solving these problems, the boiler tested was equipped with a furnace having hollow walls, through which about 60 per cent of the air needed for combustion passed before it entered the furnace. By passing through the hollow walls, the air cooled the furnace lining and prevented excessive erosion. A water screen was placed in the furnace about 3 feet above the bottom to keep the refuse deposited at the bottom from fusing and to make its removal easy. The design of the furnace, water screen, and burners was based on the experience gained in the previous cooperative tests1 with a smaller furnace, experimental water screen, and burners at the Oneida Street station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The boiler tested had 13,057 square feet of heating surface. It was one of eight boilers fired with powdered coal, and was designated as boiler No. 8. The Lakeside station is the largest central station in the world that burns powdered coal exclusively. The coal used in the first five tests came from Illinois. The fuel in the other tests -:vas a mixture of Illinois and Pittsburgh coals.

Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.
