The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1990 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. Among the most significant to be produced in Africa were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, chromite, coal, cobalt, copper, diamond, fluorspar, gold, lithium minerals, manganese, phosphate, platinum-group metals, the titanium minerals-ilmenite and rutile, vanadium, vermiculite, uranium, and zircon. Several of these, chromite, cobalt, diamond, and manganese, were not produced in the United States. Despite the underdevelopment of much of Africa, mineral raw materials playa very important part in the national economies of many of its countries. In many cases, the production of minerals is the dominant economic activity in the country, often having the largest and most sophisticated work force. In several countries, one or two mineral commodities are dominant in a weakly diversified economy. Among these are petroleum and diamonds in Angola, petroleum in the Congo, gold in Ghana, bauxite in Guinea, uranium in Niger, phosphate in Senegal and Togo, and copper and cobalt in Zaire and Zambia.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alternative electrochemical process for the production of calcium metal. The current industrial practice is costly, complex, and inefficient. The Bureau method involved electrowinning of a calcium-tin alloy followed by electrorefining to produce calcium metal. In the electrowinning cell, CaCI2 was fed to a KCI2-CaCI2 electrolyte. The calcium was electrowon at 6500 C into the pure molten tin cathode until the cathode contained 7.5 wt pct Ca. Current efficiency for electrowinning averaged over 90 pct. The resulting calcium-tin alloy served as the anode for the electrorefming cell, which employed a [CaC~-CaF2] fused salt as the electrolyte. Calcium metal was electrorefmed at 8500 C with a current efficiency of 85 pct based on calcium metal recovered. The calcium metal analyzed 99.2 pct, which is purer than commercially produced calcium.

The physical properties and related geological and petrographic data for 81 rock types obtained from operating mines or selected test sites are presented in this report. Most of these rock data were obtained to supplement structural studies in underground mines; however, the data may be equally applicable to other problems where the physical properties of rock are an important factor. Stress-strain curves are presented, where available, and free medium velocities from laboratory and field measurements are compared for several rock types. Rock-type, geographical, and geo-logical indexes are included for reference relative to physical property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical property reports. INTRODUCTION This report presents the physical properties of 81 rock types from 16 different projects (sections 53-68). Three previous physical property reports2 3 4/ (herein after referred to as parts I, II, and III) presented data on 244 rock types from 52 project areas. (Part I included sections 1-25, part II sections 26-36, and part III sections 37-52).

The spillage that accumulates under conveyor belt lines presents a possible fire and explosion hazard fomiinqjetsoruiel, especially to those who must clean up the spillage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to reduce this hazard by identifying and investigating the parameters affecting the efficiency of conveyor belt cleaning. The amount of material carried back under the conveyor and the wear rates of metal cleaning blades decreased with increasing blade-to-belt pressure to a limiting value, after which the carryback and wear rates remained essentially constant. The optimum blade-to-belt pressure was found to be 11 to 14 psi for the research conveyor system. Greater pressures increased the blade-belt friction without improving either cleaning or blade life. The modes of blade wear were three-body abrasion and slurry erosion caused by the sand-lime test mixture. Wear rates were reduced by increasing the metal hardness, opti-mizing the pressure, and removing conveyor belt imperfections. Corrosion was not observed to affect the wear of various steels in tests of less than 34 h. The results of this study should allow mine operators to run their conveyors under conditions that will maximize cleaning and minimize equipment wear.

Electrical power generation was studied in a laboratory-scale, open-cycle vortex MHD generator, which offers several advantages over straight-channel generators that require separate combustors. Compactness, lower capital cost, and high-energy release are obtained by combining the combustor and generator into one unit in the vortex generator. In addition, the vortex generator uses a simple solenoid rather than the more complex and expensive saddle magnet required for straight channel generators. Although the vortex generator must utilize combustion gases with a low Hall coefficient in order to be efficient in direct comparison to the linear generator, the primary motivation for this experimental device in terms of ultimate objective was to investigate the vortex generator with applications to direct coal firing and with combustion taking place in specially designed expansion nozzles. The vortex device offers one decided advantage over the linear device in this regard because slag deposits do not degrade or short-circuit the coaxial electrodes as is the case for a linear machine. The experimental vortex generator consists of a modified cyclone burner 7 ½ in ID by 21 in long, with the inner wall used as one electrode together with a coaxial center electrode. Power was obtained by impressing an axial field of 3,000 G from an air core solenoid magnet. Tests were conducted by seeding natural gas seeded with potassium acetate and burning with preheated oxygen-enriched air. Power generation was lower than calculated because theoretical plasma velocities were not achieved.

This study of underground mine water inflow was initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in March 1980. The objective of this study is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water and ground water systems that affect the inflow of ground water into an underground mine. Data collection techniques are reviewed for their applicability for quantifying these hydrologic variables. Innovative techniques are also investigated. Existing analytical and numerical procedures for predicting underground mine water inflow are reviewed and evaluated. Over 300 computer models were reviewed for their applicability to modeling underground mine water inflow. The model UNSAT2 is utilized for modeling inflow to a shaft and tunnel or drift. This model and the techniques developed in this study are applied to two existing mines.

Many different types of surface mining equipment use enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The overburden removal and mining process can be extremely dusty and can cause excessive dust exposure. To study this issue, a cooperative research effort was established between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, U.S. Silica Co., Clean Air Filter Co., and Red Dot Corp. in an effort to lower respirable dust levels in an enclosed cab on an older surface drill at a silica sand operation. Throughout this research effort, a number of modifications were incorporated into the drill's filtration and pressurization system, as well as in other areas, to improve its design and performance. An average cab efficiency of 93.4% was determined with gravimetric sampling instruments when comparing the outside with the inside cab dust levels on the final design. Although this study considered just one operation, the goal was to identify cost-effective improvements that could be implemented on all types of enclosed cabs to lower respirable dust concentrations. Two critical components for an effective enclosed cab system are having a properly designed, installed, and maintained filtration and pressurization system, along with a method for maintaining structural cab integrity, which allows the cab to be positively pressurized. Another important component is maintaining cab cleanliness. Although this research was originally directed toward the mining industry, it is also applicable to agricultural or construction equipment.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this study to provide information concerning the availability of and the demand for construction-mineral aggregates in the Baltimore, Md., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The demand is discussed with reference to the area's current consumption and estimates of the area's demand for aggregates through 1990. Estimates of aggregate supply are presented in conjunction with an examination of the geology of the area, the availability of substitutes, and the effect of transportation costs. A discussion of the constraints affecting aggregate availability precedes the conclusions and recommendations. The availability of aggregates is subject to geologic, economic, and political constraints. As of January 1974, an estimated 20,100 million tons of stone was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (188.7 million tons). An estimated 139 million tons of sand and gravel was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (84.3 million tons). Several alternative actions are available within the area to insure the adequacy of the stone supply and to increase the supply of sand and gravel: (1) The establishment of special mineral resource zones; (2) the application of sequential land use techniques; and (3) the exploration of previously undeveloped regions.

The tests were made to determine whether it is feasible to fire a large kiln with a single stoker, whether the use of a single furnace simplifies control, and whether the admission of all the hot gam at the center of the kiln will give symmetrical distribution of heat."

Timely and rapid intervention to underground combustion events (fires, explosions, and spontaneous combustion) is the key to the successful control of the mine atmosphere and restoring of a coal mine to production. The focus of this paper is the utilization of a GAG 3A jet engine system to combat either large out-of-control fires or to render an entire mine inert when access to problem areas is difficult or impossible. This system is based upon a Soviet designed agricultural jet engine which consumes aviation fuel with oxygen (O2) from the intake air and exhausts combustion gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O), along with the nitrogen (N2) from the air and small amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2). The system is designed to approach stoichiometric combustion (ideally, pure burning that scavenges all the oxygen from the intake air). Therefore, these exhaust gases are almost entirely “inert gases”- i.e., gases which do not contribute to, and in fact, can suppress the combustion process due to the lack of oxygen. Other methods to inert mine areas have been used in the US and internationally, but these methods usually use low flow inertisation equipment or methods. Use of these low-flow inertisation equipment and methods has been successful in proactively rendering gob areas inert and has the ability to inert the entire mine workings. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on the ignition of methane-air mixtures by sparks caused by frictional impact of aluminum alloys on rusted steel at typical coal mine fan speeds. The objectives were to establish the incendivity of aluminum alloys under these conditions, to investigate differences between aluminum alloys, and to evaluate substitute materials for the aluminum-steel combination. With a specially designed apparatus, three commercial aluminum casting alloys and a number of experimental aluminum alloys were tested for incendivity of the frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. All aluminum alloys tested produced some ignitions. Of the experimental alloys, the harder alloys and those containing silicon tended to be more incendive than the others. With the normal experimental conditions, constructional steel, stainless steel, brass, and plastic did not cause ignition of methane-air mixtures in frictional impact against rusted steel. Some ignitions occurred with constructional steel at high speed in more flammable gas mixtures enriched with oxygen. From these findings, it is suggested that constructional material combinations other than the aluminum-steel combustion would minimize this inc endive hazard. A detailed description is given of previous research, and comparison is made with present results where appropriate.

"INTRODUCTION The U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. At that time the common types of absorbent, materials were compounded ones containing the above ingredients as well as kieselguhr, paraffin, gas oils, charcoal, bituminous coal, etc.Kuryla and Clevenger4 investigated absorbents of the above type and made the following statement concerning them:"

An inducer-type pump, capable of injecting dry coal into a hydraulic transport pipeline has been developed and installed in a specially designed and fabricated slurry injector vehicle. The full scale prototype injector system can deliver up to 11 ton/min of coal into an 8-in pipeline t pressures up to 95 lb/in2. The Helical Inducer Injector operates on centrifugal principles with flow passing axially through helical pitched conical rotor. Water is delivered to the pump through an annular slot at the atmospheric pressure coal inlet. The spinning rotor maintains an air-core vortex of water which pressurizes the discharge housing. A screw feeds coal through the open inlet into this vortex. The inner radius of the vortex contracts as pressure is increased, giving a limiting maximum pressure which is proportional to the square of the rotor speed. Below this limit, flow rate, discharge pressure, und rotor speed re independent variables. The self-powered, 4 -in high slurry injector vehicle follows and receives ROM coal from a continuous miner, reduces the top size to 3-in, and delivers the sized coal to the injector feed screw for slurry formation and pumps it through a mobile hose attached to the vehicle's outby end.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

THIS REPORT give's the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1). This report is a continuation and expansion of a previous USBM grant (No. G0254004) which examined alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams in a surface mining operation. The alternative methods consist of equipment implementation in either a stowing or haulback technique. Following a typical strip mine conformation, the parting is directly stowed or hauled back and placed in the pit bottom after second seam removal. The objectives are to produce an environmentally sound material placement technique and to increase prime stripping machine utilization. This report contains the engineering philosophy behind two computer programs created to evaluate parting handling methods over d wide range of coal and parting thickness ratios. The nature of the computer approach allows cost sensitivity analysis and quick updating of costs. The two programs are clearly presented with documentation and examples such that consumers may apply then to their own operations.
