This document, prepared for the U.S. Bureau of Mines Regional Mineral Assessment Program, presents data pertinent to the mineral resource assessment of the Needles 1° x 2° map quadrangle (excluding the Arizona portion), located in the Mojave Desert southeastern California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mineral survey of the quadrangle, conducted from 1991 to 1993, was done to provide the minerals data necessary to support effective land use planning and resource decision making. To this end, this report (1) inventories historic and current mining activity, (2) inventories identified resources, (3) provides an economic analysis; of identified mineral resources and estimates their feasibility for development, (4) delineates areas of exploration and development potential based on current geological, geochemical, and geophysical information, (5) supplies information on land status, transportation networks, power supplies, water availability, and regulations, and (6) analyzes socio-economic impacts of potential mining. The Needles quadrangle is in the Basin and Range province of the southwestern United Van. The area is underlain by a lithologically and structurally complex Proterozoic crystalline basement of gneiss and granite that is overlain by sparse, scattered outcrops of deformed and metamorphosed Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic granitic plutons, particularly in the western half of the quadrangle, intruded the basement and sedimentary rocks, resulting in metamorphism and deformation responsible for the formation of high-grade gneisses and mylonitic rocks (core complex) in the eastern part of the quadrangle. Voluminous Tertiary volcanism unconformably overlie some older sequences. The structure of the area is dominated by Basin and Range extensional block faulting; in the eastern part of the area, block faulting is accompanied by widespread low-angle detachment faulting associated with core complex development.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. "INTRODUCTION The Warrior View mine of the Seaboard Coal Corporation is located in Tuscaloosa County on the Warrior River about 14 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Brookwood bed at this point yields a coal with fair coking qualities, and the product from neighboring mines on this bed has been used for the manufacture of blast furnace coke. The output of the Warrior View mine, however, is used exclusively for domestic and steam-raising purposes.This paper continues the series° of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which are based upon the study of coal preparation in Alabama now being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal mining companies. This paper contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of run-of-mine coal, and flakiness and crushing tests on certain sizes.Published information on the Brookwood bed is very meager. Fieldner6 gives the proximate and ultimate analyses for a number of seam samples taken from representative mines working this bed. Gandrud and Britton7 show sections of this bed taken at Searles, Ala. They also give the specific gravities of the coal, the bone, and the shale partings.Table 1 give the proximate and ultimate analyses for the 3/4 to 3/16 inch size of raw coal. Table 2 gives the sulphur content and the ash fusibility temperatures of the float-and-sink fractions for this same size. The character of the coal is very uniform throughout the range of sizes produced and, as it was not convenient to have these analyses on all sizes, this size was chosen as being representative of the coal. From the information available it is evident that the coal preparation problem is restricted to one of ash reduction.SAMPLING AT THE MINEAt the Warrior View mine the run-of-mine coal is dumped from the mine cars upon a 3-inch grizzly. The oversize is crushed in rolls set at 24 inches and joins the undersize before being elevated to the raw-coal bin ahead of the jig. The sample was caught at the point where elevates discharges into the raw-coal bin, by taking a proportional amount of the coal at 10-minute intervals over the period of a day's run, The total sample amounting to 2.7 tons was shipped to the laboratory at Tuscaloosa for the washability studies."

The performances of the three bituminous coal demonstration methane re¬covery boreholes, located in Greene County, Pennsylvania, are reviewed. Development of these vertical holes was largely underwritten by project funds. Reference is also made to an anthracite coal methane project in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This involved one vertical hole and was underwritten by a utility company. In addition, an exploratory drilling in the southern anthracite, which provided the project group with coal cores for methane gas analysis, is also cited. The technical and economical data that were gathered from the various methane projects are analyzed. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of methane recovery by vertical boreholes are assessed.

This Bureau of Mines report presents operating practices and results of pressure maintenance and secondary recovery by water injection or by water injection supplemented by gas injection. Particular emphasis is placed on the results of water injection, which is the principal oil-recovery method employed in projects covered by this report. No attempt is made to study gas-injection projects or operations that are considered water-disposal projects. Also, this report does not include water-injection projects that have not been in operation long enough to evaluate results. Figure 1 is a map of north Louisiana showing the geographical locations of the projects included in this report. Most of the data used in this study were supplied by unit operators, operating companies, and the Louisiana Department of Conservation. Reservoir information and recovery data are generally those supplied by the operators, but include revisions where deemed necessary.

Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the subject of dewatering and drying ooal for the past 10 years, and yet little effort has been made to summarize the literature, at least so far as this country is concerned. Only a few published articles have dealt solely with dewatering and drying coal. In most cases the subject has been discussed briefly, either in general terms or as to specific installations. It is desirable that a compendium be prepared collecting in one place information on the dewatering and drying of coal, the needs for this process in various fields, the available equipment, and the current American practice in regard to it. This work was underta..lten by the :Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama. New coal-washing plants in which various types of dewatering and drying equipment were in operation were visited in-Pennsylvania; Ohio, India...~a~ and Illinois. The dewatering·and drying of coel has .been studied in this coimtry by the Surface Preparation ·Committee of the ·coal Operato~s• Committee of the .American Mining ·Oongress. In the development of commercial vehicles as well as of passenger cars, the effects of vehicle vibrations on operating safety, health and comfort can only be predicted by numerical simulation when appropriate occupant models are available. Such models must be based on human anatomy and have dynamic properties of real humans in order to achieve realistic results. Since human dynamic behavior depend on posture and percentile, the occupant model needs to be adjustable to these parameters with respect to geometry and dynamic properties [1,2]. Dynamic Human Finite-Element-Model CASIMIR CASIMIR is a non-linear, dynamic finite-element-model of the human body. It consists of a dynamic model of the upper torso with head, neck, shoulders and arms as well as of a dynamic model of the lower extremity with pelvis and legs. The most important part is the lumbar area with dynamic non-linear models of the lumbar spine and of back and abdominal musculature. The frequency-dependent characteristics of the intervertebral discs and the effects of muscle activation and non-linear frequency-dependent muscle properties are included. In the latest stage of development, CASIMIR has been equipped with a compliant model of the body surface in the contact areas to the seat. This results in a very realistic transmission of static and vibrational forces into the human body, see fig. 1. Intense model verification and validation has been performed in all stages of model development, starting with validation of small components like intervertebral disc, ending with validation of whole-body-vibrations using measurements of the dynamic mass / mechanical impedance [4]. For an in-detail examination of stresses in the vertebral bodies and discs, a non-linear submodel of the lumbar spine with an increased number of degrees of freedom can be coupled to the whole-body-model, enabling the researcher to examine local effects of vibrations and single shocks on the lumbar materials. [ ] Since it is well known that human dynamic behavior is significantly affected by anthropometric data and posture, CASIMIR can be individualized to the anthropometric status of single individuals or to the mean values for specific percentile groups. Furthermore, posture can be adjusted to the seating conditions applicable to a specific vehicle. Posture modification capabilities include the variation of the lumbar lordosis [3].

"The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

The project investigated the impacts of coal and mineral storage piles on both ground and surface water quality. The study consisted of two major tacks, Task 1 had two phases. The first phase was field investigations in which ten cons and mineral stockpile sites (5 coal, 5 mineral: phosphate, lead, copper, iron, uranium) across the country were visited to determine the actual impart of coal and mineral stockpiles on writer quality. The second phase of Task I was a series of leaching experiments in which drainage from the ten coals and minerals was controlled and monitored to survey the extent to which storage piles release toxic ions to ground and surface waters. Task IT was n review of pollution abatement techniques with three generic treatment examples applied to lead-zinc ore, eastern coal, and uranium ore stockpile leachate. Major conclusions drawn from the completion of Tasks I and II include: water quality impacts are site specific, there is n high correlation between sulfide content of u material and its solution potential, and the selection of the best treatment alternative for n specific coal or mineral storage area must be based on site-specific criteria, pilot studies on representative leachate samples, and sound engineering design.

Data on the occident experience of the pebble-phosphate industry in Florida for 1937 and 1938 are combined in this report with statistics for the 7-year period 1930-36, inclusive, which were published in Information Circulars 69174/ and 69685/. The periodic publication of such data enables the pebble-phosphate industry, as well as other industries, to consider relative hazards, compare experience, and thereby help to prevent accidents. The Bureau of Mines is involved in research directed toward the utilization of municipal solid waste. One of the primary objectives is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste (raw refuse). This is consistent with one of the Bureau's goals, which is to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities by maximizing metals recovery from secondary domestic resources, In this investigation, cupola trials were made using combinations of refuse scrap with shredded automobile scrap under basic and acid slag practices. Furnace operating information and the behavior of alloying and tramp elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to utilize up to 60 percent refuse scrap in the cupola under basic practice and 30 percent under acid practice, Aluminum in refuse scrap, present in bimetallic cans, increased the recoveries of silicon and manganese charged to the cupola. Increased use of refuse scrap provided iron of lower sulfur. The alumina resulting from oxidation increased the slag volume. The aluminum and tin contents of the iron increased with increasing levels of refuse scrap in the charge. Lead was not a problem with respect to contamination of the iron. In basic practice, operation of the cupola was satisfactory since all slags were adequately fluid. In acid practice, operation became troublesome above the 45-percent level. Under both practices, the cupola iron melting rate decreased. Particulates in scrubber water and stack condensate samples contained lead, zinc, and tin, and the dust load increased. The tensile and transverse strengths of the iron produced under both practices are reported.

This is one of a series of instruction guides developed to help instructors present health and safety training courses to workers in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

This report discusses the development and testing of prototype gloves for underground mining work. An analysis of HSAC hand-finger injuries revealed three high-risk jobs: laborer, mechanic, and roof bolter. Laboratory tests of dexterity and protection were performed using six off-the-shelf gloves. Two prototype gloves were developed. Both were Kevlar-cotton blend knit gloves. One had polyvinyl "Ks" screened on the palm and fingers, and a hand pad sewn into the palm. The other prototype had the palm and fingers coated with a sol id layer of polyvinyl and had no hand pad. Field tests revealed that the solid-coated gloves were preferred by workers, but that the polyvinyl melted when working with hot drill steels.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. Snavely, of the United States Geological Survey, for their aid, data, and maps.Bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district in 1912 on lot 187 of the 28th land district, in Sumter County. "PURPOSE OF REPORTFatalities from falls of roof and coal are responsible for the death of more than 1,000 miners annually in the bituminous coal mines of the United States or practically one—half of the total fatalities in and about these mines. The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal—mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years.The necessity for studying falls of roof and coal becomes apparent by referring to the following data from a table by Adams and Chenoweth:3"

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pres-sure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

The rare-earth group are among the least familiar of the 92 known elements. Moreover, the relatively few people who have even heard of the rare earths ordinarily regard them merely as very rare elements having unusual names but doubtful commercial application. This typical attitude can be attributed partly to the fact that no commercial uses have been developed for most of the members of the group and partly to the fact that those which do enter into useful articles do so anonymously. Most people speak with a degree of familiarity of the "chromium" plating on their automobiles or household appliances; "antimony" ash trays and cigarette boxes are on sale in many department stores; and "tungsten" lamps and even "molybdenum" steels are advertised in popular magazines. However, the average user of a pocket cigarette lighter is not conscious that the important sparking element is a "flint" made from ferrocerium, and if he does chap on to inquire about the composition he is likely to be told that it is "sparking alloy", "misch metal", or 'pyrophoric alloy." Similarly, the wearer of spectacles made of "Crookes" or other tinted glass probably is not aware that the light softening effects are due to the presence of rare-earth oxides, or that the arc light on his street may owe its brilliance to cerium fluoride in the carbon electrode. Despite a variety of practical applications, however, most of the rare-earth metals still must be listed as scientific curiosities. In fact, little is known as to the properties which may make them useful products at some future date. Meanwhile it is important to note that Nature has been relatively generous in her distribution of the rare earths and that adequate supplies of most of them will be forthcoming when these elements have proved their worth as commercial products.

Gypsum is a form of hydrated calcium sulfate (CaS04.2H20) which is widely distributed over the earth's surface. The two varieties worked commercially are rock gypsum and incite. Rock gypsum, the variety commonly mined for commercial purposes, is a relatively soft mineral having a specific gravity of about 2.3 and weighing about 150 pounds per cubic foot. The chief producing States are New York, Michigan, and Iowa. Before being used the crude gypsum is ground and generally calcined. The predominant use of gypsum is for building purposes (the manufacture of plaster), for which calcined gypsum is required. Gypsum is also used as a retarder in Portland cement, as fertilizer, and for other purposes. GYPSUM MINING Crude gypsum is mined by two methods - underground and open-pit. Although the use of the former method predominates, open-pit mining increased in relative importance during the early twenties and contributed about two-fifths of the output during the period 1925-38.

"Introduction. The data obtained in recent research work by the Bureau of Mines show that the analysis of the gases dissolved in underground waters may be used by the prospector or geologist as an additional aid in discovering new oil or gas fields. The hydrocarbons present in the water serve to indicate whether oil or gas sands exist in the region through which the waters have passed. A portable field apparatus has been developed by the bureau which can be used for removing and analyzing the gases dissolved in the waters. This apparatus and the method of u are described in this paper. Results are given of analyses made on waters from various localities, and the significance of these waters with reference to the detection of oil and gas.Any liquid, with the exception of mercury, if permitted to come in contact with eases or vapors will absorb a definite amount thereof. This action depends on the following factors: (1) The kind of gas; (2) the percentage composition of the eases in contact with the liquid; (3) the pressure of the gas; and (4) the composition and temperature of the liquid. For our present purpose it is only necessary is consider two of these factors - namely, the gas or vapor (natural gas and light petroleum vapor), and the liquid (water).If water of underground origin traverses a gas or oil sand it will absorb a definite quantity of hydrocarbon vapors, and will carry these vapors to the surface when tapped by a well. When the water is exposed to the air at the sur¬face, the eases and vapors will be given off and their place taken by oxygen and nitrogen from the air. Therefore, an analysis of the gases in waters reaching the surface from an underground source should be of value in determining whether these waters have traversed or came in contact with hydrocarbon-bearing strata. With the apparatus herein described it is possible to determine whether the vapors are mainly of natural gas on sition (methane CH1) and ethane (C2H6 ), or are come posed mostly of heavier petroleum vapors (ethane, propane (C3E8) and buttane (C4H10)."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with stakeholders in the mining and surface drilling industries, con-ducted research to develop engineering control technologies that reduce workplace noise exposure. The result of this research partnership is the development of a partial cab.
