"After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron sulphide. The iron free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is then granulated and sent to the Base Metals- and Precious Metals Refineries for further processing.During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas streams are produced.The Peirce Smith converter off gas contains 4% - 9% SO2 which is treated in a conventional Sulphuric Acid Plant to produce sulphuric acid (H2SO4).The electric furnace off gas contains 0.9% SO2 and was (until September 2002) vented through a 91 meter high stack to atmosphere.Off gasses which contain less than 3% SO2 is difficult to handle and quite a few processes had been developed over the years to cope with this gas. A broad spectrum of process suppliers and technology approaches is available and the different technologies can be divided into a few main approaches i.e.Scrubbing of the off gas with an alkaline solution to produce an environmentally friendly and stable waste product which can be discharged onto a tailings dam or permanent landfill site.Physical absorption of the SO2 into a chemical solution to produce high quality chemically pure process chemicals.Catalytic reaction of SO2 with O2 to produce SO3 which is absorbed in water to produce sulphuric acid of less than 90% strength.In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a Sulfacid Plant at its Smelter in Rustenburg which recovers the SO2 from the electric furnace off gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution.The Sulfacid Plant technology is widely used in the paint pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off gas.The furnace off gasses contains flue dust which is removed in electrostatic precipitators. The gas exiting the precipitators normally still contains between 40 mg/Nm3 and 60 mg/Nm3 dust and passes through a quench-scrubber before entering the reactors. The quench-scrubber cools the electric furnace offgas down from ± 200 °C to 60 °C and act as a final dust removal stage."

"In mid-2001, North American Palladium commissioned a new 15,000 tonnes per day milling and flotation circuit at their Lac des Iles Mine (LDI), one of only two primary platinum group element (PGE) producers in North America. The mill treats an ore containing 2.3 g/t PGE producing a concentrate assaying 300 g/t PGE, at a recovery of roughly 75%.Top-size control crushing is conducted ahead of semi-autogenous milling. A portion of the SABC circuit feed is crushed to –25mm to increase mill throughput. Product from the SABC circuit is fed to flotation. Flotation consists of roughing and scavenging, with the rougher and scavenger concentrates each being reground using vertimills. Cleaner flotation uses two stages of cleaning using mechanical cells, and a third stage using flotation columns, the column tails being scavenged using a bank of mechanical cells. Rougher concentrate by-passes the first cleaner circuit. Reagents added include amyl xanthate collector, dithiophosphate promoter, MIBC frother and a carboxy methyl cellulose-based gangue depressant.SGS Lakefield Research, together with staff at LDI initiated a structured plant optimisation program comprising on-site testing, bench-scale flotation and mineralogical analysis using QemSCAN. The objectives of the mineralogical studies were 1) to identify feed PGM, their size distribution and mineral associations, 2) establish relationships between the PGM mineralogy and PGM floatability, and 3) characterize the culprit silicate minerals diluting the final concentrate.PGM flotation response at Lac des Iles is clearly bi-modal in nature, with about 60% of the PGM floating quickly, to a high value rougher concentrate. The mineralogical work was able to explain the causes of the bi-modal PGM floatability, which in turn created new opportunities for the metallurgists to optimise the circuit."

"Conceptual imitative dynamic model of developing enterprises for medium and long-term period permitting to ensure coordination of interests of the enterprise and territorial environmental authorities has been developed to enable the process of the prognostication and management of a concentrating mill development, in which a symbol language and terminology familiar to the manager of the company are applied. An algorithm of practical application of this model of company development was elaborated as well as a general methodological approach to the prognostication of the development and procedures of its implementation. The general methodological approach to the implementation of the model has been defined. Within the framework of system approach, a concentrating mill is considered as a subsystem of an ore mining and processing company or a mining and smelting one. A concentrating technology is considered in dynamics, its change is determined by the task of making the company operation profitable. Technological indicators are secondary relative to financial and economical indexes. At the same time, technological and economical indexes are determined in their interrelation with ecological parameters. The elaborated model allows us to estimate all necessary economic, financial and technological indexes in their interrelation both for the company as a whole and as separately redistributed estimating the basic prognostication documents - accounting balance-sheet, profit and loss report, as well as the funds flow statement. When varying the managing parameters, all necessary result-producing financial and economical indexes are estimated and a need in and a possibility of an external funding by various sources are considered.The implementation of the model enables one to determine the required scale of production capacity, as well as the amount of raw-material resources needed. In case of shortages of the latter, there should be considered various scenarios of the production capacity enhancement or the possibility of commissioning of new sites or deposits and introduction of improved technologies."

"The present work is an attempt of neural networks application to the description of complex technological processes of useful minerals enrichment. Neural networks are among the most convenient tools that have been added recently to the professional toolbox of modelling specialists, and they are particularly useful in realisation of multiple practical tasks, characterised by great complexity and relatively low amount of available a priori knowledge about the nature of the modelled processes. They are successfully applied in a wide variety of problems related to data processing and analysis, their prediction, classification or process control. The object of the study was the technological site for copper ore enrichment by floatation, being a part of technological line in the Ore Enrichment Plant ZG „Polkowice”, KGHM „Polska Miedz” S.A.The main floatation is described by parameters measured by the supervision and control system, which can be grouped with respect to the functions performed for the object:a) input function: aFG - copper contents in the feed material for the main floatation [% Cu]b) control: LFG I - level in the first section of the floatation unit [%], LFG II - level in the second section of the flotation unit [%], LFG III - level in the third section of the floatation unit [%], LFG IV - level in the fourth section of the floatation machine [%]. These quantities compose the five elements long input vector.c) output function: ? - copper contents in the waste from main flotation (final waste) [% Cu]The measurement data, containing the above-mentioned parameters, have been collected during the normal operation of the plant. The data contain momentary values of the parameters, registered every 10 minutes, covering the period of 196 hours of the plant’s operation (1176 measurements for each quantity).For construction of the model used in the study classical multi-layer perceptron-type neural network has been used, with one hidden neuron layer, trained by the error back propagation method."

The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country's landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

"A number of metal supplying industries have in recent years seen the compilation of life cycle inventories (LCIs) and life cycle assessments (LCAs). The activity has largely been driven by the interest of ultimate metal users, such as the automotive industry, in the interest of designing more sustainable products. Often, the compilation of such inventories has been little more than an auditing exercise. However, the process of conducting an LCA can have more value, guiding designers and operators to points within the technology train where significant emissions and impacts originate. The LCA product can thus be used to inform on-site environmental management, and, where process data is used to construct dynamic operational models, to support strategic decision making in the realm of project planning and technology selection. LCA thus serves as a valuable tool to support the industry’s drive to support the sustainable development of the societies in which it operates.This paper reviews and compares the priorities of environmental and closure planning in the design phase, with environmental management and auditing during operation, and with green procurement of minerals and metals products. It shows how life cycle assessments of various complexities can be used to reconcile these various objectives, ensuring that the latter, critical to business success, can be addressed from the outset in a new project. The paper then reviews a case study of the use of LCA in the base & precious metals industry, where the complexity of the operation disallowed the simpler auditing process so that a detailed process understanding had to be built up in order to compile a meaningful life cycle inventory."

"Bubble-mineral complexes could be formatted by an attaching of hydrophobic particles to the surface of air bubbles or by an evolution of bubbles from solution onto hydrophobic surfaces. Measurements of contact angles, detachment forces (DF), induction times (IT), evolution pressures (EP) and flotation recoveries (FR) for the studying of minerals wettability at various pH and electrochemical potentials were used. An analysis of the obtained IT results show that a process of bubble attachment to a mineral surface is a rather slow one and it will scarcely be enough for bubble-mineral complex formation under the conditions of real flotation.The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements, Figure 1, correlate with the data of floatability-potential for pyrite. The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements for galena (-1 ÷0.2V) and chalcocite (-0.5÷1.2V) correlate with the potential ranges of floatability for galena (<0.2V) and chalcocite (>-0.4V). An increase of the DF and the cathodic limit of the adhesion potential with increasing length of the hydrocarbon chain were observed. EP-pH curves for sulfides are a mirror-like to the DF-pH curves, Figure 2. Structure of solid-liquid and liquid-gas borders has a determinative importance for formation of bubble-mineral complexes and subsequently flotation results. Under vacuum on the mineral surface there are produced micro bubbles and preferably they will be appeared on the hydrophobic sites. Water structure breaks near a hydrophobic surface facilitate water mass destruction and formation of gaseous phase embryos under decompression in the impeller zone. It simultaneously reduces a probability of produced micro bubbles dissolution as a result of pressure increasing owing to constant fluctuation of liquid densities into impeller zone. Comparison of Taggart’s evaluation of the suction behind blades of the impeller of an agitation-froth machine and ABEP data on galena, Figure, shows that gas evolution will be observed in the range of 1300-2700 revolutions of impeller per minute for hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces successively."

Axis House manufactures and supplies alkylhydroxamate reagent of various carbon chain lengths for application in flotation of oxide copper and other minerals. As part of reagent performance improvement the structural factors of hydroxamate are examined by various analytical tools in particular with X-ray diffraction of single crystals. In a recent publication, the structure of n-octylhydroxamic acid and its corresponding potassium salt are presented with findings of hydroxamic functional group geometric preference, H-bonding, keto-enol tautomerisation, acid-salt aggregation and alignment of carbon chain. In this paper an example of branched alkylhydroxamate 3, 5, 5-trimethylhexylhydroxamate will be presented and compared with the result of linear alkylhydroxamate.

Arsenic in base metal sulfide ores is highly penalized owing to high costs for its control in metallurgical processing. The arsenic element in the lead-zinc ore, which is target ore in this study, has been shown to be in the form of arsenopyrite. Experimental work in this study is about arsenic rejection flotation, using depressant suitable for the removal of arsenopyrite from the Pb concentrate. The arsenic rejection flotation also included the oxidation treatment of Pb concentrate with H2O2. In this study, the Pb concentrates containing 80.7% Pb and 0.25% as was obtained with the additions of aluminosulfate as arsenic depressant. And through IR measurement, it was also known that the addition of aluminosulfate during arsenic rejection flotation formed calcium aluminosulfate hydrates on the surface of arsenopyrite particle, resulting in rendering arsenopyrite hydrophilic.

The purpose of the research is the development of a complex of solutions for the maximum extraction of non-ferrous and precious metals from persistent mineral raw materials by heap bioleaching from spent heap leaching (HL) stacks. Methodical recommendations for assessing the suitability of primary and technogenic refractory mineral raw materials for heap bioleaching are developed. Active associations of microorganisms have been created for the conversion from various types of ores to the solution of S, Fe, As, Sb, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Mg, P and other elements, as well as methodologies for their storage, immobilization and preparation of bioreagents in industrial conditions. On a pilot scale, tests were carried out on samples weighing 15-17 thousand tons of refractory gold-sulphide ores (more than 50% of gold is associated with sphalerite), gold-quartz ores with colloidal gold (74% associated with quartz and pyrite) and gold-silver ores with elevated copper and zinc content (1.5 and 3,5%, respectively), as well as man-caused material lying for 4-5 years of spent quarry material of oxidized gold-silver ores. In the pilot-industrial tests of heap bioleaching of gold-sulfide ores, gold recovery of 84-85% and silver was achieved to 89-90%, the possibility of obtaining high-yield solutions of copper and zinc, suitable for hydrometallurgical processing, from gold-silver ores, and the possibility of obtaining waste with a dump content of valuable components, suitable for deep disposal in the construction industry. When comparing two technologies for processing refractory ores after biooxidation under HL conditions, when 1000 tons of ore processed by the bioreagent were re-milled from a size of 40 mm to 0.1 mm and cyanated under the conditions of the factory process, the same results were obtained for gold recovery (85%) and silver (90%), as with the heap version. The consumption of aggregates in civil construction has increased considerably in Brazil for the last years. The extraction of sand and gravel generates significant environmental impacts. As the quarries and sand deposits are getting exhausted near the big cities, the price of aggregates is increasing. Meanwhile, the extraction of quartzite (dimensional stone) in the state of Minas Gerais has been done mostly in small quarries, with very low recovery, generating approximately six million tons of wastes a year, which causes pollution, increases final prices of products, decreases the life time of quarries and ends up in the closure of enterprises. The government agencies and the quarries’ owners understand that only by finding applications to wastes there will be development to the sector. The aim of this investigation was to study the application to the quartzite wastes as aggregate in the civil construction. Samples of quartzite wastes collected in a quarry were characterized by petrographic analyses. Laboratory tests of crushing and grinding were done to analyze the viability of reducing the size of coarse material to a finer one to be used as raw material in industrialized mortars and concrete pre-molded components.

Sensor-based sorting has been integrated into more and more applications in mineral processing over the past decades. Various sensor types, such as line scan cameras, near infrared sensors and X-ray transmission sensors, allow the separation of a vast variety of raw materials. Sensor-based sorting has several economic benefits which can make the difference between an uneconomic operation and a profitable mine. Sensor-based sorters can be applied to fulfill various sorting tasks, such as waste rejection, product quality improvement and ore type diversion, and have a significant impact on the layout of the processing plant. Therefore, it is important to include sensor-based sorting into the planning of a processing plant at an early stage. To evaluate the applicability of sensor-based sorting for any specific ore type, it is currently necessary to provide several hundred kilograms of material for subsequent bulk tests. In exploration, ore samples are usually rare and only available in form of drill cores. The acquisition of drill cores is time-consuming and expensive especially for deposits in great depth. Hence, it is unfavorable to spoil valuable drill cores for bulk tests. This paper describes a methodology to evaluate the applicability of sensor-based sorting based on drill core analysis. That methodology offers the possibility to calculate the achievable performances of different sensor types for various grain sizes without comminution of drill cores. The general methodology is shown on basis of an exemplary test work on drill cores from a currently conducted exploration.

Acid mine drainage is mainly due to pyrite/arsenopyrite oxidation processes, and suppressing such processes is important issue. As a promising process it is reported that silicate ion can complex with catechol (1,2-dihydroxybenzene) and this complex is oxidized to a solid silica layer on the surface of those sulphide minerals. Detailed behavior was investigated from the result of electrochemical experiments. Results of polarization potential showed that oxidation peak can be seen only in the presence of both silicate ion and catechol addition at this peak potential and this peak can be identified as silicate-catechol complex oxidation to silica. Potentiostatic experiments indicated the dissolution kinetics of pyrite. Untreated pyrite dissolution rates were higher than pyrite treated with catechol and silica solution. To enhance the silica layer reaction on pyrite, the pyrite potential was held at 550 mV vs. SHE in catechol silica solution. This pyrite dissolution kinetics was almost the same as untreated pyrite. Potential hold followed by drying for 30 min process resulted in much lower pyrite dissolution rates. Drying is important for development of the silica layer. Analysis of this potentiostatic curve provided a way to estimate the thickness of the produced silica layer and kinetic information of treated/untreated pyrite. Untreated pyrite showed thinner initial layer thickness on the surface of pyrite (oxidized passive layer, not silica) and higher oxidative kinetics of pyrite compared with silica-coated pyrite.

The purpose of this work is to present ?state of the art? mass balances closing strategies in ore treatment plants. It presents a brief history of difficulties and challenges ahead. The current methodology is based on usage of an expert system, which seizes and filters the plant data, analyzes situations of equipment stops and mostly instruments failures. It is still possible to internally create a strategy to check the data of an instrument failure. The system is coupled to software with a Lagrangian model of mass balance closure that receives the pre-treated data. Thus, the data goes through filtering and reconciling processes to generate a reliable mass balance of the ore treatment plant. This made possible to obtain a system that is able to tell the real productivity of a ore plant through reliable mass balances. Residence times on equipments are critical to the balance, thus, they require good logic to eliminate errors due to the characteristics of non-steady state. Among the next challenges is the inclusion of a ?soft sensor? as a replacement of an instrument required for mass balance closure.

Under modern economic conditions in Russia, gold heap leaching is the most effective way of investing into gold-mining industry. Gold is recoverable from small-size deposits, low-grade ores from oxidation zone, cut-off grades, and overburden rocks using heap leaching. This technology is cost-effective and allows a saleable metal to be obtained within the first year of operation. The investments for heap leaching are lower than those of for a traditional plant technology. Production cost per one gram of Au is 5-7 times lower than that of during a plant flow sheet. A seasonal development of mines can be possible. With reference to this, heap leaching resembles the technology of placer deposits development. One of the major advantages of heap leaching is the form of the product. Gold can be obtained as dissolved in a clarified PLS, which allows the further quick treatment. The amenability of ores to heap leaching depends on their mineralogical composition. Oxidized porous ores with a good access of a lixiviant to valuable particles can be treated without pre-crushing. Clayish minerals are often found in oxidized ores with free gold. In order to build ground for heap, several major methods combined with various pad materials are used. These methods have been used at many plants and are reliable. The development of heap leaching technology for gold ores for the deposits from Yakutia, Zabaikalsky region, Primorye region, Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, and Kazakhstan began in the 70s. However, it has been commercially used only since 1990. The first heap leach plants were built and commissioned in the USSR in 1991 at Vassilkovsloye deposit (Kazakhstan) and at Maiskoye deposit in Russia in 1994. Pilot plant testing was conducted in 1996 using ores from Kuranakh ore field, deposits Phiskulturnaya-Kholodnaya and Lopukhovskoye from the Aldan region. After the first successful commissioning of heap leaching plant in Russia, this technology has been commercially applied for deposits. Every year 1-2 heap-leaching plants were commissioned. More than 30 heap-leaching plants have been commissioned both in Russia and in the former Soviet Union using technologies developed by IRGIREDMET. Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.

Laboratory batch tests having preliminary and orientation character aiming at improvement of the molybdenum flotation at Ellatzite copper processing plant in Bulgaria have been conducted. The following technological parameters have been screened to study their influence on the grade and recovery of copper and molybdenum during the rougher flotation stage: flotation pulp density, pH, addition of secondary collector and replacement of MIBC by pine oil as a frother. The results have shown that slightly better grade/recovery figures could be obtained for both copper and molybdenum at lower flotation pulp densities. The addition of kerosene has improved the recovery of molybdenum however, on the expense of that of copper. The effects from pH variation and the replacement of MIBC by pine oil as a frother have been almost negligible.

"The electrokinetic behavior of EL Maghara coal has been investigated in the presence of nonyl and octyl nonionic surfactants containing polyethoxy of different sizes with trade names of Triton-X100 (TX-100), Triton-X 705 (TX-705), Triton WR-1339 (TWR-1339) and Brij 58. The electrokinetic behavior was determined by zeta potential measurements. Zeta potential measurements were conducted by Laser-Doppler electrophoresis technique using zetamaster. The results show that the zeta potential of Egyptian coal varies with pH value, the hydrocarbon chain and number of ethoxy groups in the hydrophilic group of the surfactant. It was found that the polymeric surfactants reduce the negative values of zeta potential of coal. The shift of PZC of coal upon deashing appears to be closely relevant to silicate mineral removal."

"Using computer models for process design is a well-established practice in the mineral industry. In recent years, there has been emphasis on modeling of processing plant as a whole. This paper covers development of a model for iron ore processing plant. Basic purpose of this model is to use simulation for efficient plant design and help in minimizing risk at the very initial stage of project. Feed to the plant is Hematite iron ore from a deposit located in Eastern India. Major processes in plant include multi-stage crushing, screening, grinding, classification, gravity and magnetic separation. Models for different process equipment were developed using METSIM and Bruno simulation software. Customized black box models and known mathematical models were used for predicting behaviour of processes. Data needed was identified based on the model type. The required data was arranged as per project requirement and processed for development and validation of model. Equipment models were developed and validated on the basis of process design basis, theoretical and empirical data from technical references, and bench scale and pilot scale testwork results. Validated process circuits were assembled to simulate and represent the entire plant process. The result shows expected variation in plant output as a result of variation in the feed. Study concludes by discussing potential applications of the model in plant design."

The treatment of placer gold with fine gold, associated with gold-bearing sulfide minerals, heavy minerals and oxidized minerals such as manganowolframite (gubnerite) is not an easy task. In this case, this complex material cannot be treated using physical separation methods such as deep concentration and finishing, magnetic separation and solvent extraction. This technology is usually employed in gold washings finishing plant. The easiest way to recover precious metals in the form of an easy-to-sample saleable product is metallurgical treatment. This paper describes the application of pyrometallurgical processes with oxidative roasting, re-cleaning of cinders (if required) and ore-thermal smelting for producing gold bullion. Hydrometallurgical treatment of slags as an additional operation is recommended in order to maximize recovery of valuable metals. After this treatment, a barren leaching cake rich in PGM can be sold in the market. PGM can be collected as gold-silver alloy during smelting which allows the phase formation of polymetallic matte due to specific composition of fluxes. The PGM are then in the form of saleable gold bullions in the refinery.
