As opposed to large household appliances, in the processing of which dissambling has an important role, this possibility is pushed into the background as the size decreases. The practicable solution is physical liberation of the used small electronic household devices (by comminution) and separation of the liberated components according to their physical properties. In the first phase of the experimental work the structural/material composition of the typical products (mixer, kitchen robot, hair dryer, coffee machine, iron, bread toaster, vacuum cleaner, oil fryer) was determined. In the second phase a physical liberability test for each appliance using a rotary shear/shredder for crushing and a hammer shredder for milling was carried out. In the third phase the experimental separability tests using an air classifier and a shaking air table, as well as an eddy-current and an electrostatic separator were performed. In the present paper the results obtained using the air classifier and the electrostatic separator, are reported. To follow the life of a grain a new methodological procedure was elaborated. The particle size fractions after comminution were sorted into material fractions (copper, aluminium, plastics, etc.), then separated, and finally the recovery of the material components in the products were determined. Furthermore, the joint separability was investigated from two points of view: 1) for grain fractions and 2) for each waste appliance. Despite increasing demand, the supply of silver is limited by its inadequate recovery from ores. Due to its scarcity in nature, its high ore variability and complex mineralogy of current silver deposits, its recovery by mineral froth flotation presents a real challenge for process engineers. A silver ore often contains significant amounts of five to ten different silver minerals and knowledge of the mineralogy is a necessary precursor to flotation testing. In this work, a complex silver ore was treated by using batch laboratory flotation, in an effort to find the best experimental conditions to obtain the optimal silver recovery. Mineralogical characterization of feed samples was conducted using a combination of tools, namely the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), which indicated that most of the silver occurred as ?invisible? silver in pyrite. The pyrite assay of the ore was approximately 4%. The ore was processed in two flotation stages. The first stage, sulphide flotation, aimed to collect a sulphide mineral rich concentrate; then a non-sulphide flotation stage was performed by adding sodium sulphide and collectors to the remaining material in the cell, with the objective of obtaining a pyrite rich concentrate. To reach the target recovery of silver from this ore, various variables were altered. In the first stage: mixed collectors, activators, dispersants, and mainstream inert grinding were assessed. In the second stage, the conditions for sulphidization and subsequent flotation were both investigated. From the grade recovery curves for silver and sulphur it was possible to observe a similar metallurgical behavior for both elements, supporting the results given by the mineralogical characterization. Gold and copper are lost in flotation tailings in mineral processing of copper-zinc-pyrite ores. Large resources of precious and base metals have accumulated in tailing ponds of Russian plants. Object of the study is the sample obtained from Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company in Russia. The main constituents in flotation tailings are Au, Ag, Cu and Zn with content 1.4 g/t, 12 g/t, 0.66 and 0.5% respectively. The flotation tailings are a refractory material. Gold, as main metal, is fine encapsulated in sulfides, mainly in pyrite. Gold extraction from tailings is 34.0 and 42.7% at P42 and P90 of 0.074mm particle size respectively. In this work heap bioleaching of tailings was studied for oxidation sulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) with using mesofilic and moderately termofilic bacteria in acidic solutions. The tailings had low filtration property (< 0.3 m/day) and pelletization was used before bioleaching. Copper containing converter slags flotation tailings and calcium oxide were used as binding material for increasing filtration property of tailings. Copper was extracted in sulfate solution and was precipitated by cementation after cleaning of bacterial solution from iron. Copper recovery was 56.8% at content 61.4% in precipitate. The biooxidation of pyrite was 80%. Cyanidation, leaching with thiourea and heap leaching by cyanide were tested too. Gold extraction from solid bioresidues was 82, 75.3 and 77% respectively. The results of this investigation were recommended for pilot test.

"The problem of separation of copper minerals and arsenopyrite remains relevant because of environmental requirements. The selective action of reagents with the thioamide group (thioamides) is known in iron sulfide’s flotation of pyrite and pyrrhotite. The aim of this study was to reduce the arsenic content in the copper concentrate when using thioamides by reducing the flotation of arsenopyrite in the flotation of the sulfide part of the skarn scheelite-sulfide ores. We have chosen the most widely used thioamides for the study, such as Z-200. We also synthesized new reagents with the thioamide group. The most selective and the most powerful thioamide copper collector were used for further studies. Reduction of arsenic content in copper concentrates is achieved in the following way: You need to apply a strong thioamide collector with a selective but weak dialkyldithiophosphate collector, or vice-versa, a selective, but a weak thioamide collector should be used with the dialkyldithiophosphate reagent with strong collective properties. The proposed combination presents industrial interest because of its accessibility. The application of thioamides in copper minerals and arsenopyrite selection has showed that these reagents have fewer selective properties than dialkyldithiophosphates. To achieve the comparable recovery of copper using dialkyldithiophosphates requires markedly greater consumption of thioamides, due to their lower hydrophobic ability. The application of a composition of thioamides and dialkyldithiophosphates allows to increase the recovery of copper and to obtain a lower arsenic content in copper concentrates compared to their individual use. The lowest arsenic content in the copper concentrate is obtained in the composition consisting of the newly synthesized thioamide with strong collective properties and selective dialkyldithiophosphate. The addition of even small amounts of xanthate to the composition of thioamides and dialkyldithiophosphates causes a sharp increase in the arsenic content in the copper concentrate without a notable increase in copper recovery."

"Release analysis is independent of collector and frother dosage and type, but it is primarily influenced by the degree of liberation or “state of release of the sample”. The shape of release curve is an indication of the degree of liberation. This paper briefs about the effect of reagent combination, particle size and surface characteristics on the release analysis of difficult-to-clean LVC coal.Release analysis of three LVC coal fines obtained from two different coalfields of India was carried out at three different size levels such as -0.5mm, (-0.5+0.1) mm, and -0.1mm. The collectors used were n-dodecane and commercial diesel oil. Incomplete liberation of coal fines even at a size of -100µm, corroborated by photomicrographs of ROM and clean coal macerals, in a great measure reduced the flotation-based cleaning potential of the fines. FESEM images of fines reveals that the adherence of ultrafine onto the surface of relatively coarser particles reduced the clean coal recovery. The results obtained also appear to be coal, reagent combination and, particle size and particle surface specific. Only one coal indicated the liberation as is usually expected for -0.1mm particles with a reasonable yield of 65% at 18% ash. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation has a long history of being used to treat coal fines. Coal flotation is considered to be difficult, if the percentage of Near Gravity Material (NGM), i.e. essentially locked particles, in flotation feed is >10% [Aplan, 1993], which is usually the case with all the coking coal fines in India. The fines are rich in vitrinite, so valuable for coking coal. Unfortunately, there appears to be no standard procedures to determine the separation efficiency of froth floatation. Release analysis proposed by C.C. Dell in 1953 [Dell, 1953], aimed to determine the ultimate floatability of coal. Several other techniques had been proposed but release analysis technique has been considered to be a vast improvement over the batch flotation process [Forrest et al. 1994]."

"A worldwide decline in competency levels of practicing metallurgists over recent decades has become clearly evident and is a common topic of discussion among senior practitioners and professional associations. The associated impacts on the industry are material and include operational inefficiencies, missed optimisation opportunities and suboptimal new plant designs. There are many contributing factors to this condition. Decrease in competency is particularly evident both in regions where imbalance between supply and demand has led to a general reduction in experience levels for comparable roles over time and in emerging regions where a rapid rise in demand for practitioners has occurred in conjunction with rapid economic development and industrialization. The context, depth and breadth of education curricula and levels vary with location such that solutions to the technical competency dilemma may need to be developed specifically for each region with these influences in mind. Delivering, demonstrating and maintaining competencies are a critical requirement of undergraduate training and ongoing professional development. Other factors such as generational and cultural characteristics and expectations, political influences, role requirements and employment reward and recognition systems all play a critical role in determining if core competencies can be effectively developed, applied and subsequently maintained. This paper reviews factors impacting and some common approaches to competency development. The authors’ experiences in the management of professional development efforts within the global industry are reviewed and a blueprint proposed to address industry requirements in this area."

"The influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation behavior of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were studied via single mineral flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations in this paper. The results of single mineral flotation tests revealed under the conditions that pH=4 and the dosage of SPA 100 mg/L, the recovery of cassiterite reached 76.78%. The addition of 20 mg/L AC decreased the recovery by 12.42% at pH=4. Contact angle measurements demonstrated the adsorption of CA prior to SPA made the cassiterite more hydrophilic. The results of zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations indicated the chemisorption of C6H7O7- and C6H6O72- filled parts of the Sn site on cassiterite surface and prevented the SPA from getting adsorbed. The hydrophilic effect of AC was stronger than the hydrophobic effect of SPA and the flotation of cassiterite was crippled. INTRODUCTION Tin is an important metal which is widely used in medical instruments, marine engineering materials, electronic and electrical devices, welding, weapon manufacturing and organotin compounds industries (Angadi et al., 2015). Cassiterite is the only mineral from which the tin can be extracted, thus it is of great importance to efficiently exploit the cassiterite mineral. Flotation is an indispensable method for the recovery of cassiterite (Li et al., 2015). However, cassiterite is usually in association with many other gangue minerals which are of similar floatability, such as quartz, calcite, fluorite, iron oxide, wolframite, scheelite and tourmaline (Sreevinas, 1997). So some modifiers are necessary in the cassiterite flotation process. The amounts of the modifiers used in the flotation must be judicious and the overmuch modifiers may cripple the recovery of cassiterite (Parsonage et al., 1987). Nevertheless, the research about the effects of the modifiers on the flotation behavior of cassiterite has been rarely reported. A complex rare metal ore, containing various valuable elements is used in this study. The mineralogy results indicate that the mineral composition of the raw ore is complex, and there are more than thirty-eight kinds of minerals in the raw ore, and the elements, such as Nb, Ti, Fe, REO, Be etc, always form isomorphism relationship. The REO content of the raw ore is 0.45%, and the contents of other rare metals Nb, Ta, Ti and Zr are 0.33%, 0.02%, 0.93% and 2.00% respectively, and the main gangue elements are Si and Al, and their contents are 71.84% and 8.5% respectively. The beneficiation-metallurgy combination process of ?preconcentration-reduction and magnetic separation-acidification and leaching-precipitation? is used to treat the raw ore. The preconcentration of raw ore is realized through high intensity magnetic separation, and the magnetic field intensity is 1.0T, and the rough concentrate with 2.88% REO and 1.95% Nbresidue can be obtained, and the iron recovery is 92.83%, and the REO recovery is 95.87%, and the Nbresidue is treated by hydrometallurgy process of ?acidification-leaching-precipitation?, then the rare earth oxide, niobium concentrate and zircon-bearing residue can be obtained, and the REO recovery is 80.10% and the Nbresidue and the gangue obtained from the high intensity magnetic separation process is separated by gravity separation, and then the zirconium concentrate can be obtained. The indexes of the beneficiation-metallurgy combination process used to treat the complex rare metal ore are as follows. The REO content of the rare earth oxide is 92.58% and the recovery is 58.44%. The Nb2O5 and 27.42% TFe can be obtained. Iron in rough concentrates is removed after reduction and low intensity magnetic separation, then the iron powder with Fe content over 88% and nonmagnetic rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 94.77%. The rare-metal 2O5 recovery is 80.04%. The mixture of the zircon-bearing 2O5 content of niobium concentrate is 28.34% and the recovery is 54.02%. The ZrO2 content of zirconium concentrate is 28.43% and the recovery is 52.35%. The TFe of iron powder is 89.53% and the recovery is 78.13%. "Wetting theory is one of the basic theories of flotation. The effects of concentrations, carbon chain length and pH values of saturated fatty acid collectors (lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid) on the surface wettability of collophanite and dolomite were investigated by measuring the contact angle with dynamic captive-bubble technique and calculating adhesion work of bubble-mineral. The results show that the contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are higher with enhancement of hydrophobicity when pH value of 5~9. The contact angles both of collophanite and dolomite are reduced with improvement of surface hydrophilicity. When strong acid pH value of 2~4 or strong alkaline pH value of 10~13. The reasons for this are that the fatty acids mainly exist with insoluble RCOOH molecules in strong acid condition, and competitive adsorption of OH- and RCOO- in the mineral surface is formed in strong alkaline condition. With the increase of the collector concentration, the contact angles of the collophanite and the dolomite all first increase then decrease. The formation of hydrophilic micelles results in the decreasing of contact angles and enhancement of surface hydrophilicity opposite when the collector concentration exceeds CMC. The contact angles of the collophanite and dolomite and the WSG of the bubble adhesion increase, the hydrophobicity enhance with the increasing of carbon chains of saturated fatty acid from 12 to 18. The variation tendency for the adsorption quantity of collectors and floatability of collophanite and dolomite are in line with the change trend of contact angle basically. It shows that the wettability of solid-liquid-gas interface can be well characterized by the dynamic captive-bubble technique.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorite resources are the main raw material for producing phosphate fertilizer and producing phosphoric acid (Cao et al.,2005), which is an important strategic mineral resource. The useful minerals in calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore are collophanite, and the main gangue minerals are dolomite (SISH et al.,2003). The lattice ions of the phosphorite and dolomite are both Ca2+, their similar surface properties and similar floatability are the main reason for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore difficultly (Fang et al.,2011). Usually, fatty acid collectors are used for the flotation of calcareous-magnesium phosphate ore under acidic conditions by reversing flotation method to remove dolomite (ABOUZEID et al.,2009), or direct flotation is used to gather collophanite in the alkaline conditions (Gong et al.,2017). The flotation behavior of collophanite and dolomite affects the indexes of concentrate and flotation efficiency directly. Therefore, it is necessary to study the action mechanism and the flotation method of the collector with the phosphate rock and dolomite respectively (Moudgil et al.,1988; Hanna, et al.,1990)."

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

"The appropriate treatment of cyanide waste water is becoming an emerging issue because of the toxic residue and large quantity produced from gold processing plants. In the present article, we designed and operated a continuous biological cyanide treatment system using domestic sewage sludge and various microorganisms including a cyanide-producing and degrading bacterium, Chromobacterium violaceum. The synthetic wastewater containing 50 mg/L of cyanide was pumped continuously into the reactor at a flow rate of 500 mL/d for 21 days. When 50 mg/L of cyanide was fed, the cyanide concentration in the effluent of the reactor inoculated with activated sludge (S-50) decreased by 7.5 mg/L in the effluent. The other reactors did not show significant cyanide degradation and the reactor inoculated with C. violaceum showed increased cyanide concentration in the effluent. The microbial community in the reactors was analyzed by 16S rRNA-gene based pyrosequencing technique to investigate microbial response to cyanide addition and operation time. The microbial community analysis shows that the phylum Proteobacteria was detected in the reactors showing significant cyanide degradation (S-50), while Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes was dominant in the other reactors with very low cyanide degradation. Proteobacteria could not compete when the other phyla Firmicutes or Bacteroidetes were inoculated. This study shows the feasibility of the biological cyanide treatment system for gold processing plants and contributes new fundamental knowledge about the microbial community in the biological cyanide treatment system. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation has been widely used to recover gold from ores or secondary resources since first proposed by MacArthur and Forrest in 1888 (MacArthur et al., 1888) and it is used in many states of the USA, including Nevada, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Idaho (Laitos, 2012). Cyanide compounds are highly toxic and create serious problems for wildlife and water management (Solomonson, 1981; Donato et al., 2007). Furthermore, because many countries have imposed strict standards for cyanide discharge (USEPA, 1985), it is essential to develop a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology for treating cyanide-containing wastewater."

Phosphate minerals are conventionally concentrated by flotation process using soap or soap- light diesel oil emulsion as collector. Some plants use detergents such as sodium petroleum sulfonate or alfa olefin sulfonate to enhance efficiency of soap flotation. It is reported that urea a known hydrotrope enhances flotation efficiency of soap as efficiently as alfa olefin sulfonate or linear alkyl benzene sulfonate at bench scale tests. In the present study tri sodium citrate also a known hydrotrope is tested as promoter in the flotation of phosphate mineral from Eshidiya ore.

"Thiol collectors including the xanthates and dithiophosphates have dominated the sulfide mineral processing industry for over a century. Tecflote represents completely different chemistry, without sulfur or phosphorus, and will float all sulfides and associated precious metals. As these collectors are surfactant in nature, they comprise a head group which binds to mineral surfaces, a spacer and a long hydrophobic tail. The modification of the spacer behind the head group allows for collector optimisation for different sulfide ore types and process conditions.The Tecflote surfactants have been designed to be either very selective against pyrite at the natural pH of the ore (pH 7-9) or to float all sulfides including pyrite. Depending on the ore type and the process flow sheet, the use of lime can be maintained, reduced or completely eliminated.Tecflote can be used either as a rougher collector giving good recovery and grade for the sulfide minerals or it can be used to target valuable minerals after regrind and through cleaner flotation. It has repeatedly shown to be very effective at holding onto gold through the cleaner steps. The low solubility has a significant impact on the mechanism and surface activity of the collector, resulting in a very different flotation response compared to conventional thiol collectors.INTRODUCTIONXanthate was first made in 1882 by Zeise and first used in flotation in 1924 (Keller, 2018). In 1946 Keller patented thionocarbamate as a collector, which was produced by Dow Chemicals (Keller, 2018). Later it was replaced by Dow product Z-200, while dialkylthionocarbamate was discovered by Harris et al. (Harris, 1954. No significant chemistry change to collectors has occurred since they were introduced in the mid-20th century and now that the feed grades have been declining over the last decades creating a need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores and pushing the industry to look at other reagents."

The purification process of water-mining carnallite and rough potassium chloride concentrate from Qinghai Salt Lake Industry Group Co. Ltd. are investigated by the preprocessing-reverse flotation technology respectively. The results show that the impurities such as calcium sulfate and sodium chloride can be effectively removed from water-mining carnallite ore and rough potassium chloride concentrate by the new technology, the low-sodium carnallite is obtained and the final potassium chloride product greatly upgraded. The content and the recovery of KCl in the low-sodium carnallite are 25.78% and 97.50%, meanwhile the content of NaCl, CaSO4 in the low-sodium carnallite are 0.56% and 0.24%, and the removal of sodium chloride and calcium sulfate in the low-sodium carnallite are 97.48%, 85.10% respectively. The KCl content and recovery of high quality potassium chloride product are 98.25%, 96.70%, and CaSO4 content is 0.40% with 83.24% calcium sulfate removed in the high quality potassium chloride product.

"Pelletizing is an important technique in the ironmaking industry. Artificial and natural magnetites are materials that are widely utilized in the iron ore pelletizing process. In this work, the pelletizing characteristics of these two types of magnetite have been investigated in detail. The obtained results shown that in contrast to natural magnetite, the artificial magnetite concentrate exhibits stronger hydrophilicity, lower electronegativity, larger specific surface area, and rougher surface. In addition, the green pellets produced from the artificial magnetite concentrate are characterized by a higher compressive strength as compared to that of the pellets obtained from the natural magnetite concentrate. However, the shock temperature of the artificial magnetite pellets around 255 C is significantly lower than the threshold specified by the industry. The balling characteristics of the material obtained by mixing 20% of the artificial magnetite concentrate with 80% of the natural magnetite concentrate are considerably improved with respect to those of the individual components.INTRODUCTION Pelletization is an essential process of the ironmaking industry in China. Since the pellets produced from iron ore exhibit high mechanical strength, good particle granularity, and uniform shapes, pelletizing high-grade iron ores with good metallurgical reducibility can lower the coke ratio, improve their technico-economic index, and reduce the cost of processing pig iron in blast furnaces[1, 2]. Presently, high-grade magnetite is a material utilized for pelletizing various iron ores across the globe. However, its natural deposits have been depleting rapidly in recent years; as a result[3], China’s dependence on the foreign high-grade iron ores exceeded 70% in 2009 and reached the level of 87% in 2016. Hence, possible methods for the efficient cultivation of limonite, siderite, hematite, and other refractory minerals that correspond to low-grade, finely sized, inhomogeneous, and scattered iron ores have attracted significant attention [4, 5]. In particular, magnetization reduction roasting and magnetic separation techniques, which are widely utilized for obtaining high-grade artificial magnetite, represent effective ways of processing iron ores that can alleviate the scarcity of natural magnetite resources [6, 7]. The artificial magnetite produced by magnetization reduction roasting exhibits different characteristics as compared with those of natural magnetite (including the degree of hydrophilicity, surface potential, specific surface area, and other surface physicochemical properties[8-11], which significantly affect its pelletizing behavior. In this work, the surface characteristics of artificial and natural magnetites are investigated in detail, and their effect on their pelletizing properties (such as green ball strength, heat stability, and pelletization rate) are examined."

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. Lithium has all the prerequisites to become a strategic resource of the 21st century. (Deutsche Bank, 2016; Bradley et al, 2017)"

With the progressive depletion of known resources of good quality coal and minerals as well as the increasing demand of these minerals by different user industries, the emphasis has been shifted all over the world from selective mining to bulk mining followed by up- gradation to obtain the required quality of concentrate. The column flotation cell is one of the alternatives to reduce the gangue content of fines because of its inherent characteristics viz. easier to operate, low space required, no moving parts etc. A laboratory flotation column is used to conduct experiment. Present work has been undertaken to observe the effect of process variables (gas flow rate, feed/slurry flow rate, and frother concentration) on gas dispersion parameters (gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) in collection zone and to explore the effect of feed (slurry) inlet orientations and gas flow rate on column?s metallurgical performance. The effects of solid particle concentration, size and type (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of solid on gas dispersion parameters have also been investigated. Test work has been performed in a continuously operating Perspex column (10 cm in diameter and 168 cm in height) using coal, sphalerite and dolomite as solid. Gas hold-up has been measured by phase separation method and mean bubble sizes are estimated from a drift flux analysis. The influence of operating parameters on bubble surface area flux has been discussed. It is observed that gas holdup in collection zone is affected by air as well as feed flow rates and also solid?s type. It is also found that addition of solid decreases the gas holdup and rate of decrease in gas holdup increases when solid concentration increases and particle size increases. Increase in gas flow rate increases recovery in collection zone due to increase in number of bubbles per unit volume of the column. From the experimental results it is evident that cross-current orientation of feed inlet shows slightly better metallurgical performance compared to other orientations. "Sulfidization-amine is the most effective method for the recovery of smithsonite (ZnCO3), however the interface interaction details remain unclear. The sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite has been studied by Density Functional based Tight Binding (DFTB+) method in this paper. The slab model of ZnCO3 (101) surface was built and the adsorptions of a monolayer of HS- and S2- ions were conducted to model the sulfidization effect on the ZnCO3 (101) surface adsorption. DDA hardly interacts with the hydrated ZnCO3 (101) surface. Under the low concentration of Na2S, HS- ions form a Zn-SH-SH structure on the ZnCO3 (101) surface, which hinders the interaction between DDA and surface Zn atoms. Under the high concentration of Na2S, a layer of ZnS is formed on ZnCO3 (101) surface, which is favorable for the adsorption of DDA on the surface. This is consistent with the flotation practice where smithsonite flotation requires a large amount of sodium sulfide. The results could provide a microscopic investigation into the sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite.INTRODUCTIONSmithsonite (ZnCO3) is an important and typical oxide mineral of zinc. It is a semi-soluble salt mineral with a solubility product constant of 1.46 × 10-10 (Weast, 1973). The most common and effective method to recover oxidized zinc ores is froth flotation (Caproni et al., 1979; Pereia and Peres, 2005; Kashani and Rashchi, 2008). It is well known that the flotation of oxidized zinc minerals is much more difficult than the flotation of zinc sulphide minerals (Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007).The recovery of zinc oxide ores with poor floatability attracts more and more attention due to the depletion of easy-recovered of zinc sulfide ores.Sulfidization-amine flotation, which using Na2S as sufidizing agent and amine as collector (Mckenna et al., 1949; Rey, 1954; Abramov, 1961; Rey, 1979; Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007). This method is the most successful technology used for zinc oxide minerals flotation in large-scale industrial applications since it was invented in the 1950s (Önal et al., 2005; Pereira and Peres, 2005). There have been numerous experimental researches on the sulfidization-amine flotation of smithsonite. Shi et al., (2013) studied solution chemistry of smithsonite flotation system. Feng and Wen (2017) studied the formation of zinc sulfide species on smithsonite surfaces and its response to flotation performance. Wu et al., (2017) investigated the sulfidization behavior of smithsonite with the use of zeta potential, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS). Their measurement results confirms the chemisorption of sulfur ions and the formation of ZnS film on the smithsonite surface after Na2S treatment, however the influence of HS- ions on the surface and the influence of sulfidization on the amine adsorption have not been discussed."

An investigation of the seeding mechanism using heterocoagulation and the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory of two pure minerals is the objective of this study. The seed was silica with modal diameters of 4.529 µm (fine particles) and 5.216 µm (coarse particles) and the test powder was hematite with a modal diameter of 0.883 µm. Parameters included variations in the concentration and particle size of silica. Both particles were first subjected to size determination and settling tests via Stoke’s Law. The silica-hematite system was then suspended in 0.001 M KNO3 electrolyte solutions where pH was adjusted. Afterward, the suspension was agitated and was allowed to settle at different time intervals while obtaining turbidity readings. Results through settling time and turbidity vs. pH graphs indicate that maximum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 2 to 5 while minimum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 6 to 7. At these pH levels the zeta potentials of silica and hematite are negative and positive, respectively. On the contrary, repulsive forces dominate the system from pH 8 to 11 due to the particles’ negative zeta potentials. Furthermore, the attachment of hematite to silica increases when the parameters become larger thereby increasing the effectivity of heterocoagulation at acidic to neutral pH levels.
