The oxidation of Fe(II) with S(IV) and oxygen can be used advantageously in leaching systems requiring both Fe(III) and sulfuric acid; e.g., heap leaching of sulfide-containing ores or concentrates. The oxidation of Fe(II) with SO2/air is several orders of magnitude faster than with air alone; rates of up to ?20 g/L'h were observed at 25°C. The reaction proceeds via an intermediate orange-red mixed-valence Fe(II)/Fe(III) sulfite complex, which is present at an essentially constant concentration throughout most of the oxidation process. The oxidation rate of Fe(II) is approximated by the formula -d[Fe(II)]/dt = k [S(IV)] [02]0'3. The concentration of the mixed-valence complex, and thus the iron oxidation rate, decreases with increasing acidity. Certain impurities, such as SCN- and thiourea, negatively affect the rate. The oxidation reaction 2Fe2 + SO2 + 02 4 2Fe3+ + S042- is accompanied by the side reaction H20 + SO2 + 1/202 4 H2SO4. The side reaction becomes particularly important at low temperatures and whenever the oxygen mass transfer is insufficient with respect to the rate of addition of S(IV). Thus, effective oxygen mass transfer is essential for achieving high oxidation rates with minimal acid formation. The activation energy was estimated as 141 kJ/mol over the temperature range 10-35°C.

"Ore deposits containing rare earth elements normally contain small amounts of the radioactive elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U). These are the naturally-occurring isotopes U238, U235, and Th232 (and associated decay-series daughter products) that are ubiquitous in nature, and that contribute a small percentage of the natural background radiation exposure encountered by humans. The presence of these radioactive materials in the ore deposit creates potential hazards to human health and the environment that must be dealt with properly in the mining, processing, and refining of the ores, as well as management of waste streams and residues. This paper presents an overview of the environmental and safety issues associated with U and Th, with particular emphasis on rare earth mining, processing, and refining projects; the regulatory approaches followed to ensure that rare earth deposits are developed, operated, closed, and decommissioned safely; and the development of information during the project predevelopment work and permitting processes that feed into the design, operation, and closure of tailings impoundments and milling/separation/refining facilities. Case studies will be presented subject to the availability of relevant public information. INTRODUCTIONNearly all ore deposits containing economically-recoverable rare earth minerals also contain small amounts of the radioactive isotopes for the elements thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U) and their associated radioactive decay products. Therefore, the handling and management of these materials in mining and mineral processing operations must be performed so that workers and the environment are protected from harm from Th and/or U (and their radioactive decay products), just as they must be protected from any other potentially harmful constituents present in the ore or introduced in processing. Examples of these might include ores with high sulfide content, which may pose a risk of acid rock drainage, or chemicals used in ore processing and metals production.The purpose of this paper is to present information on how rare earth mining and processing projects with ores containing Th and/or U can be developed, operated, and decommissioned safely according to applicable regulations intended to protect worker health & safety and the environment.It should be noted that some countries are considering developing Th as a feedstock for producing nuclear energy, which could have some effect on future development of rare earth ore deposits. "The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. V-ratios refine interpretations of rock type and vector to orebody locations.RÉSUMÉ La méthode de la valeur relative (valeur R), du facteur de discrimination (facteur D) et du rapport de vecteurs (rapport V) (RDVM), fournit un schéma d’interprétation des données géochimiques basé sur les statistiques et les connaissances géologiques et la génétique géologique; ce schéma contribue aux découvertes en exploration géochimique. L’avantage pratique de la RDVM est qu’elle fait la synthèse des caractéristiques géochimiques reliées géologiquement à des découvertes de gisements de minerais en trois étapes : une reclassification des concentrations des éléments au moyen de courbes de probabilité logarithmique en valeurs R; un calcul des facteurs D définis géologiquement à partir des valeurs R et la détermination des rapports V. In April 2005, Umicore Copper de-merged from Umicore Group and created a new independent Copper company called Cumerio. As a separate company, Cumerio is a major European copper smelter and refinery and a leading producer of copper products such as wire rod, billets, cakes and specialty rod with a total production capacity of copper products in excess of 500,000 tpy with production plants in Belgium, Italy and Bulgaria. The Pirdop Smelter is the only state-of the-art smelter in South East Europe and it makes Pirdop the natural hub for the copper industry in the region. In order to be competitive in the international market the main challenges facing Cumerio are to maintain its low cost structure and to achieve higher production volumes while reducing its impact to the environment and striving for continuous improvement of the production process. Cumerio's state-of-the-art smelting facility in Pirdop has recently increased the anode production capacity to 250,000 tpy by the installation of the third evaporative cooler on the converters section that allows operating with three-hot converters. In April 2007 a general shut-down for repair and modification on the Flash Smelting Furnace and Waste Heat Boiler is envisaged. At this time a revamp of one of the existing Sulphuric Acid Plants is planned, resulting in a further copper capacity increase to 275,000 tpy with modest Capex. In 2005 Cumerio received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water the Complex Permit under the EU IPPC criteria. Accordingly an Environmental Compliance Program was defined targeting a large reduction in the secondary emissions. The system will be commissioned in May 2007. In order to better integrate the smelter and refinery in Pirdop and to respond to the growing demand for cathodes in the region, a new state-of-the-art Electrolytic Refinery with an installed capacity of 180,000 tpy will replace the existing refinery. The new refinery is expected to be fully operational as from early 2008. This paper describes the challenges and the projects.

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

A series of tests were performed to determine the flammability limits of mixtures of oxygen, ammonia, steam and nitrogen, over a solution, in a sealed autoclave. The partial pressures of ammonia and oxygen in the vapour space were varied by adjusting the character of the solution and by adjusting the oxygen concentration in the oxidant gas respectively. The data shows that flammable conditions can be minimized by controlling the operating temperature, reducing the ammonia content in the solution, increasing the concentrations of Ni, Cu and Zn in solution and keeping the % oxygen in the gas phase less than 15.5. Observations were also made that suggest that the presence of an aerosol in the vapour space may hinder ignition.

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

"Damaging seismicity associated with deep faulting in both mining and civil excavations not infrequently occurs without warning, and often before proper mitigation measures have been put into place. Severe squeezing is also a common problem for excavating through deep major faults. While both problematic conditions are difficult to predict and characterize, there is often a need at pre-feasibility and feasibility level to more reliably estimate the possible level of risk posed by such geologic structures. This paper introduces some structural geologic techniques that have potential application for both mining and civil applications for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of problem.INTRODUCTIONEncountering adverse faulting at depth in deep excavations, whether for mining or civil purposes can create serious economic and safety impacts. For deep mines or for deep tunnel projects, measures are available for aiding prediction of the extent of possible influence that large scale faults could create, but these techniques are rarely if ever applied as part of routine site investigation programs, or even as part of risk assessment evaluations. Several well established structural geologic methods of palao-history reconstruction have potential application for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of potential problem by allowing estimates to be made of:• controlling stress orientations that might engender reactivation movement;• principal stress magnitudes that could lead to failure initiation, and• probable mechanisms of fault deformation - brittle (bursting) or plastic (squeezing).This paper explores several structural geological and rockmass characterization techniques that have application for unravelling fault structure of importance to deep engineering projects. Their application for mining or tunnelling purposes is advocated in conjunction with conventional rockmass characterization assessment approaches using GSI, RMR and/or Q to aid early recognition and definition of potential adverse ground condition behaviour associated with intersection of significant faulting at depth."

"Environmental risk is becoming more important in debt and equity financing decisions in the mining industry worldwide. Demonstration of good environmental management practices and management systems has a direct impact on the ability of mine developers, operators and investors to raise financing. Based on experience in providing due diligence services, there are a number of factors that are important in assessing financial risks related to environmental issues in either new projects or existing facilities. A frame-work for understanding the importance and priorities of each element of environmental management is presented.IntroductionIn the context of lending money to a corporation, environmental issues represent another aspect of credit risk (Henry, 1989). These issues, because of their nature, represent the potential for large unforeseen expenditures if they are not known or acknowledged and are not being proactively managed. Lenders, other investors and their advisors, are becoming increasingly aware of the potential financial impact of environmental issues. Consequently, they are increasing their requirements for environmental audits to review the environmental issues, management practices and systems when they are considering financing mining and/or metallurgical processing operations worldwide.Many banks have signed the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Statement by Banks on Environment and Sustainable Development. Banks in this category include National Westminster Bank, the Union Bank of Switzerland, Deutsche Bank, and the Royal Bank of Canada."

"The use of scandium in industrial applications is expected to rise in the coming years, in large part due to the expected adoption of new, clean energy technologies such as solid oxide fuel cells or Sccontaining high strength aluminium alloys. Given that the supply of Sc is currently dominated by only a few countries (Russia and China) other sources for scandium extraction need to be investigated. This paper looks at different options for the recovery of scandium from waste solutions generated during the production of TiO2 pigments via the chloride process route. In particular, a direct solvent extraction (SX) approach and possible options for concentrating scandium before the SX step were investigated. It was found that the presence of Ti during solvent extraction causes severe formation of stable emulsions, which can complicate the successful application. This was particularly a problem after multiple contacts of the organic phase with fresh aqueous phase. On the other hand it was noticed that the presence of certain elements in the solution, e.g., iron, could possibly be utilized to concentrate scandium in a solid precipitate.INTRODUCTIONMany newly developed high-tech products depend on the use of chemical elements that are only produced in very small quantities. This can result in high and fluctuating prices, as can be seen from Figure 1, which may cause substitution with inferior alternatives, if possible at all (Reck & Rotter, 2012; US Dept. of Defense, 2013; Whittaker, 2011). One example is scandium (Sc) a member of the extended rare earth element family. There are only a few scandium ore deposits, but most Sc is produced from the processing of by-products of other metallurgical processes (Melcher & Wilken, 2013). Increasing demand for scandium metal and oxide (Sc2O3, scandia) is coming from its increased use in applications such as ceramic lasers (Li, Ikegami, & Mori, 2005; Rainer et al., 1982), high strength aluminium alloys (Lathabai & Lloyd, 2002) as well as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) (Thijssen, 2011). Especially, the spread of climate friendly SOFC’s, which are a commercial product today (Bloom Energy, 2014), is expected to be a main driver for future Sc2O3 demand. However, the rate of market penetration of this green technology depends on the availability of high purity Sc2O3 (>99.999%), since it specifically contributes to longer life-time and better safety of the SOFC’s (Bloom Energy, 2014; Irvine, Politova, & Kruth, 2005)."

"Detection of outliers is an important primary step in geomodelling. Geological datasets often contain errors due to problems such as measurement device limitations and recording glitches. In this paper, a robust Mahalanobis distance–based approach is successfully applied to particle size distributions of the Joslyn lease, an oil sands development site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Automatic outlier detection and geological review were combined. Outliers from the Mahalanobis distance approach were compared with their respective core photographs to determine if laboratory measurements and facies classification were correct. A checking procedure for laboratory technicians is proposed.RÉSUMÉ La détection des valeurs aberrantes constitue une étape primaire importante de la modélisation géologique. Les ensembles de données géologiques contiennent souvent des erreurs en raison de problèmes tels que les limitations des instruments de mesure et des pépins d’enregistrement. Dans le présent article, une méthode robuste basée sur la distance de Mahalanobis a été mise en oeuvre avec succès aux granulométries du bail minier Joslyn, un site de sables bitumineux en développement à proximité de Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. La détection automatique des valeurs aberrantes a été combinée à une étude géologique. Les valeurs aberrantes de la méthode de la distance de Manalanobis ont été comparées avec leurs photographies respectives de carottes de forage afin de déterminer si les mesures en laboratoire et la classification des faciès étaient correctes. Une procédure de vérification pour les techniciens de laboratoire est proposée."

THE H.B. MINE and concentrator are located in the Nelson Mining Division of British Columbia, on the north side of the Sheep Creek valley about seven miles southeast of the town of Salmo. It is an operation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), which has its metallurgical plants at Trail, about 25 miles west. The property was originally staked about 1907 by Horton and Benson, whose names are commemorated in the designation "H. B." Up until 1927, a considerable amount of development work was done in the upper levels by various companies. Cominco purchased the ?property in 1927 and carried out intermittent work until 1946. Following this, an extensive surface diamond drilling programme and a subsequent underground exploration were undertaken. Sufficient ore was outlined 'to warrant the construction of a 1,000: ton concentrator. This was started in April, 1952, and completed by the spring of 1953. However, because of adverse base metal market conditions, operation was deferred until May, 1955.

"THIS DEPARTMENT is unique in that it operates in the production stream and also provides an essential service. Its operating function consists of scheduling an ore train to haul 10,000 tons per day over 17.1 miles of track and switching all incoming and outgoing rail equipment on 2.2 miles of track at the minesite and 6.2 miles of track at the metallurgical site. The service it provides is traffic control of all incoming commodities and all outgoing concentrates, metals and acid by rail and truck, even extending to port and ship control for overseas shipments (Fig. 46). The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. The Darrehzar porphyry Cu deposit is situated in the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic suite of Central Iran. The REE and trace element data suggest that the deposit lies within a continental margin setting. Phyllic and propylitic alteration are pervasive in the area but potassic and argillicalteration are not readily recognized on the surface. This is possibly the result of super gene weathering of the surface rocks or because of an intense phyllic overprint. Poor soil development and abundant outcrop make the area suitable for a case study of lithogeochemical exploration technique for Cu deposits. A total of 262 rock samples was collected over the area and analyzed for 15 elements. The geochemical data cor-relate with the mineralogical composition of the rocks with the phyllic zone being marked by high-er concentrations of Si, Al, K, and by a high sericitization index while Ca, Mg, Sr, total Fe and Mn are more abundant in the propylitic zone. The lithogeochemical study indicates a metal zonation from a Cu + Mo-rich core to a Zn + Pb ± Ag-rich outer zone. Principal component analysis is useful for separating element associations, which in turn reflect the alteration halos. Principal components 1 and 2 depict alteration zoning, where-as 3 shows an association of Cu and Mo, that roughly defines the mineralized area.

The question of whether the air curtain principle could be used under conditions prevailing in Canadian metal mines was investigated. A vertical, portable BERRY air curtain was tested, at first in a wind tunnel built at Ecole Polytechnique at full scale (8-by 8-ft cross section) to simulate a drift and its lateral connections, and then in the haulage ways of a metal mine under actual conditions. The results permit us to predict under what conditions this type of air curtain is capable of acting as an air stopping or flow regulator and how it could be further developed.

"A miscible displacement pilot, using a slug of LPG driven by separator gas, was conducted in the Cardium Reservoir of the Pembina Field. The injection pattern was a 10-acre, inverted, isolated five-spot. Upon completion of the LPG-gas phase, an .experiment was conducted using a slug of water followed by gas. Calculated performance of the pilot is compared with actual performance. Equations are developed to cakulate the distribution of LPG into zones of varying permeability, to estimate the progress of the flood at different times in the various zones, and to estimate gas rates after breakthrough. The analysis indicates that permeability stratification was a dominant factor in con-trolling oil recovery and that oil was completely displaced from the swept pore volume. The results of the pilot indicated that miscible flooding is a practical means of pressure maintenance in this reservoir. The total recovery from the pilot area was good in spite of the early breakthrough of LPG. The effects of stratification were reduced by injecting a slug of water into the partially swept reservoir."

"Under high stress conditions, rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events are common phenomena that occur around underground openings. In general, together these three phenomena represent brittle failures of an intact rock mass; however, individually they reflect different failure modes under high stresses. After analyzing and comparing the stress-to-strength criteria for rock bursts, borehole breakouts, and spalling events, proposed by previous researchers, it is found that these brittle failure phenomena share common stress-to-strength prerequisite. The stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures can be defined by the ratio of the maximum tangential stress around an underground opening to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (s?max/sci) or by the ratio of the maximum far-field principal stress to the UCS (s1/sci). Both these indicators can be used to reflect the same stress preconditions. For s?max/sci, a ratio of 0.4±0.1 represents the critical stress requirement for brittle fracture. However, for s1/sci, a ratio of 0.15±0.05 should be considered as the critical stress requirement. Numerous engineering case studies and analysis of rock mechanics based on the Hoek-Brown criterion also verify these two stress-to-strength preconditions. Here, these two indicators are presented with an error range because complex rock mass quality ratings, lithology, and geotechnical conditions have profound impacts on the stress-to-strength preconditions for brittle failures. INTRODUCTIONHigh stresses are one of the most important factors that must be considered when undertaking underground rock mass projects (Kaiser et al., 1998). Wang et al. (2009) reviewed current progress in the evaluation of high stresses and their corresponding criteria. However, after clarifying the definition of high stress, civil engineers need to understand the deformation and failure behaviors of rock mass around an opening under high stresses. Under high stress conditions, the deformation of rock masses around an opening can be categorized into two groups, i.e., severe brittle failures (or rock bursts) and compressional plastic deformation of the surrounding rock mass, as indicated in Figure 1."

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.
