This paper investigated the loss of cyanide via oxidation in CIP or CIL processes by relating the cyanide oxidation to its major oxidation product, cyanate. The results showed that the oxidation of both free cyanide and copper cyanide complexes are substantially enhanced by the presence of carbon. The rate of cyanide oxidation was found to occur in the order: Cu(CN)32- > CN- > Cu(CN)2-. The cyanide oxidation rate in the presence of copper and carbon increased significantly with increasing dissolved oxygen concentration, typical of CIL vs. CIP conditions. Cyanide oxidation rate of iron, zinc or nickel cyanide complexes was minimal.

Estimates of interstitial water saturation derived from capillary pres-sure data are compared with residual water saturations found by the analysis of cores out in oil-base drilling fluid. A theoretical explanation for the high-rate of water production from the Bellshill Lake Field is proposed, based on the interpretation of the capillary pressure data.

"The repacked mineral aggregates of good grade oil sands have permeabilities ranging between 15 darcys to 350 millidarcys. The variation is due to the silt contents of the aggregates. Few good grade oil sands contain as much as 30 per cent •silt, most of them contain less than 20 per cent, and a large proportion have less than 10 per cent.The permeabilities of repacked good grade oil sands (oil included) depend on the degree of liquid saturation. When saturation with oil plus water reaches between 80-90 per cent, permeability is reduced to zero. As total saturation decreases below 80 per cent, permeability increases ranidly. Permeabilities of between one and two darcys were observed for total saturations between 60-70 per cent.The mean value for 18 measurements of the permeabilities of ""undisturbed"" core samples of good grade oil sands was 50 millidarcys. This value is •probably too high. The mean value for 20 measurements on core samples of interbedded oil sand and shale was 100 millidarcys. The mean value for 11 measurements on shale was 10 millidarcys."

ABSTRACTA series of algorithms were developed to perform geometric and kinematic analyses of cable shovel dipper-ground interactions for a given set of mining face conditions. The routines examine and analyze (a) the position of the dipper in relation to the shovel; (b) the dipper in relation to the face conditions; (c) the dipper position in relation to possible interference or collision with crawler tracks during digging cycles; and (d) kinematic and geometric considerations with respect to any point on the dip-per as it conducts a duty cycle. In all cases, field measurement verifcation provided good agreement(within 4% variance).

Introduction The property of Normetal Mining Corporation is in Desmeloizes township, Quebec, twelve miles north of Dupuy on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Quebec city co Cochrane, Ontario. The ore bodies occur within a band of highly sheared and sericitized agglomerate which strikes N.60°W. and clips 82° north. Along a zone 1,000 feet or more in length and of variable width, the agglomerate has been replaced by copper, zinc, and iron sulphides, with copper usually predominant on the hanging-wall side and pyrite replaced in part by sphalerite on the footwall. A northsouth diabase dyke cuts through the ore zone near its east end. The Normetal mill produces a copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate which are shipped, respectively, to Noranda, Que., and Newcastle, Penn., U.S.A., for further treatment. The present paper deals with the milling of ore from what is known as No. 3 orebody. This is a lenticular body of high-zinc ore lying co the east of the diabase dyke, along the line of strike of the main ore zone, which extends westward from the dyke. On its northern side, No. 3 orebody is in contact along most of its length with a narrow band of copper ore which is highly oxidized.

The wear mechanisms of the tuyere lines of Peirce-Smith and Hoboken converters are a subject of endless debate and speculation. However, there has been an indication that one of the primary factors in the deterioration of tuyere lines is due to the batch operation of the converting process. The cooling of the brick in the tuyere line during out-of-stack times leads to shrinkage of the brick and resultant opening of the joints. Subsequently, on re-entry of the tuyere line into the bath, the joints become penetrated with matte and re- expansion of the brick is prevented. It is thought that this regular cycle of exiting the batch for slag skimming and replenishment of matte and re-entering for further blowing leads to a gradual “ratcheting” of the tuyere brick lining. If no expansion allowance is furnished between the endplate and the endwall of the lining, then the generation of damaging compressive stress is unavoidable. INTRODUCTION It is generally accepted industry-wide that the integrity of a refractory lined vessel is determined by an inextricable combination of refractory brick quality, the caliber of the lining design and installation, and the severity of the process inflicted upon the high wear areas of the vessel lining. Rigby has summarized the concentrated attempt, over the past several years, to optimize the microstructural, chemical, and fracture properties of the refractories used in non-ferrous pyrometallurgical vessels. Furthermore, lining design concepts involving larger and longer brick and the extent and positioning of expansion allowance in the joints have been extensively trialed. All these efforts have provided some, but not startling, improvements. The simple fact is that a vessel lining composed of bricks with an optimized microstructure and chemical inertness must installed with a well-conceived design to decompress the lining stresses that are generated by the batch operation of copper converters. REFRACTORY QUALITY Converting is conducted by injecting air into the molten matte and white metal for the very purpose of generating iron and copper oxide slags. These slags must be contained by a refractory which, by its mineralogical formulation, is optimized for chemical inertness.

Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

The gold at Giant Yellowknife is intimately associated with a complex mixture of sulphides, including pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and a wide variety of antimony sulpho-salts. Direct cyanidation has never been feasible. Recovery is almost entirely dependent upon flotation, roasting of flotation concentrate, and cyanidation of calcine. In November 1958, an Edwards-type roaster and an early prototype, two stage Fluosolids roaster, were replaced by a large two-stage Fluosolids roaster of improved design. The new roaster was started at "safe" medium temperatures, but early in 1959, temperatures in both stages were gradually and deliberately lowered to determine whether continuous autogenous roasting could be maintained under exacting low temperature conditions necessary for good extraction. Quebec Cartier Mining Company came to the conclusion t hat an electric trolley assist providing more horsepower than available from dieselgenerator sets presented the best oppor tunity for improvement. Accordingly, a testing and development program was carried out which resulted in the design, installat ion and application of a practical system. This paper describes the development of the system, the equipment used as well as the actual operation. A projection is also made to indicate further improvement in productivity. A comparison is made of truck operating data before and after activation of the trolley assist system in order to determine its economic impact."

The Outotec Flash Smelting process is widely used in primary copper production. A layer of slag on top of matte (copper–iron sulphide melt) creates a barrier through which matte droplets descend. Droplets of different sizes settle through the layer at different rates, which increases possibility of copper losses as smaller matte droplets may be removed with the slag. In this work CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics – discrete element method) coupling was used to simulate matte droplets settling through the slag during slag tapping. Discrete droplets and slag flow were simulated with DEM and CFD, respectively. This new approach enables tracking and solving movement and interactions of individual droplets. User-defined models were created to take coalescence and reaction kinetics into account. Coalescence created larger droplets, while the reactions decreased droplet size and increased its density. Drag caused funnelling effect, which pulled droplets towards the centre line of the descending cluster. This research is the only study known by the present authors in modelling liquid-liquid systems with the CFD-DEM coupling. Simulating coalescence and chemical reactions for discrete droplets enables more realistic simulations. However, CFD- DEM simulations are computationally resource intensive already without additional models, so a full scale industrial settler modelling still waits for further increase in computer performance. INTRODUCTION Flash smelting is a method used in copper and nickel production. In the flash smelting process, oxidation of sulphides in a concentrate is used to release energy needed to smelt the feed. In the process, copper matte is formed. Matte has copper content in the range of 55 – 70% (Sridhar, Toguri, & Simeonov, 1997), the rest is mainly sulphur and iron but has still many other impurities (Taskinen, Seppälä, Laulumaa, & Poijärvi, 2001). Oxidized iron forms iron-silicate slag while SO2 is collected for acid production (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 2015). The Outotec flash smelting furnace (FSF) can be divided in four major component: concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler and uptake. Concentrate, flux and oxygen enriched air are injected into the reactor through the concentrate burner. The mixture then reacts in the reaction shaft forming matte and slag, which are collected in the settler, while off-gases flow out of the reactor through uptake for heat and dust recovery, and SO2 collection for H2SO4 production. The matte and slag form separate layers due to immiscibility and density difference. Raw material feed is continuous, but the matte and the slag are tapped periodically. A flash smelting furnace is depicted in Figure 1.

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. This contrasts with 255 billion Euros of the value of iron and ferro- alloy production in the same year (International Organizing Comittee for the World Mining Congresses, 2018). Hence, the NF metal industry is almost as important as the iron and steel industry. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the behaviour of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10 m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. The newest part of the lower part of the Q-chart gives more information on required support compared to older Q-system versions. The RRS can be described as a three part composite material with the 3rd component being the reinforced concrete beam (with no fibers) and with steel rebars that are placed in groups and sprayed with pneumatically applied shotcrete in layers. The RRS usually have a total thickness varying between 0.20 and 0.50 m and a width between 0.25 and 0.60 m respectively. They are placed at different distances along the tunnel axis depending on the rock mass quality.In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. This was done by writing a FISH subroutine which is implemented in the discontinuous numerical code Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) that takes into account the characteristics of the reinforced beam (height, width, number of steel rebars, and spacing) in the calculation process. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and in situ stresses (?H/?v = 0.5), and changing only the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam.The results show that: a) the S(fr) is almost overloaded in the first 4 hours after application in both tunnels; b) on the S(fr) and steel rebars, the stresses, axial and shear loads, as well as moments are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are increasing with time. The observed reduction in stresses and loads in both the S(fr) and reinforced beam is surprising. A possible explanation is that tunnel arches are self-supported to a lesser extent as time progresses due to redistribution of stresses in the nearby rock mass through the radial bolts. The loads in radial bolts are increasing by almost 25%. This can be seen from the overall results as we observe an increase in maximum principal stresses, displacements, shear displacements along joints and hydraulic apertures compared to tunnel baseline that has no support of any kind."

"The pastefill circuit at the Bell Allard Mine in Matagami, Quebec started up in August 1999. The surface pastefill plant produces a cemented paste which is sent underground by gravity through a vertical pipeline in the mine ventilation shaft. Difficulties with paste flow during the start-up highlighted the importance of understanding paste rheology and the effect of operating procedures on line wear. By June 2000, the original circuit had been modified to include a paste pump to transport the paste to the shaft.The steps taken during the paste plant commissioning are discussed. The final flow sheet is presented, focussing on the use of instrumentation to ensure full column flow and proper distribution underground. Resistance modelling and accelerated curing of samples are examined as possible ways of predicting paste resistance to ensure compliance with the mine’s paste specifications.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning a new plant can be difficult and time consuming. The start-up of Noranda’s Bell Allard paste backfill plant was no exception. Since the first day it went into operation, the paste circuit could not meet the tonnage and paste quality requirements of the mine because the paste would not flow by gravity into the vertical pipeline in the mine’s ventilation shaft.Diagnosis of the pastefill problems proved difficult. It was only when the rheology of the Bell Allard paste was understood that the flow problems were solved. To ensure that the paste placed in the stopes meets mine requirements, two methods of paste resistance prediction are being developed."

Hydraulic fracturing and hydraulic shearing techniques are essential for the development of unconventional oil & gas and geothermal resources. Such techniques will also play a key role in the development of CO2 sequestration, and management of high stresses encountered with deep mining. However, the optimal design of hydraulic injections is often limited by continuum treatments of the rock mass without consideration of the influence of the natural fractures present. These may interact with the hydraulic fracture to promote offsets or arrest, or may cause the natural fractures to undergo shear and dilation. Given the limited access to the rock afforded by deep boreholes common to oil & gas and geothermal projects, advanced numerical modeling is critical for understanding key mechanisms and interactions. In this work, we first present a coupled hydromechanical distinct-element model focusing on the propagation of a hydraulic fracture. Normal and shear displacements arising from the generated hydraulic fractures are subsequently integrated into a fracture flow model for detailed analysis of specific flow behaviour and fracture permeability. For this, a scanned 3-D profile of a natural fracture is used to correlate surface roughness to dilation as a function of shearing. Fracture flow is computed at different time steps corresponding to different fracture propagation states and geometries. Modeling results indicate that the opening of a tensile hydraulic fracture is accompanied by millimetre-scale shear displacements associated with slip and wedging between adjacent blocks. This may leads to a mismatch between the upper and lower walls of the fracture if asperities are irregular and strong enough. However, fluid-induced tensile fractures have low Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC), and associated millimetre-scale shear displacements are too small to ensure a significant offset of asperities that prevent a fully-elastic closure when the hydraulic fracture is depressurized. Injection of proppant is thus critical to keeping hydraulic fracture apertures open. Future work is planned that will see the models calibrated against field data including microseismic event locations, magnitudes and source mechanisms, tiltmeter deformations, stress change, and pore pressures.

"The intact rock constant, mi, is one of the three basic input parameters required for the widelyused Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Values for the constant should ideally be determined by statistical analysis of laboratory test data. In this paper the influence of the inclusion or exclusion of tensile test data on derived values is discussed. We firstly investigate the relationship between direct tensile strength (DTS) test values and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) test values based on a literature search, finding that the correlation between the two test types is DTS = 0.9*BTS, independent of the lithology being tested. Secondly, using the shear strength database of Douglas (2002), we examine the influence of confining pressure range and the inclusion or exclusion of DTS and BTS test values on calculated values of mi.Chief amongst the influences was the exclusion of tensile data in the calculation procedure, particularly when the Hoek triaxial confining stress range requirement (?3?max = 0.5?c) was not satisfied. Based on a reasonable 1:1 relationship between R (the ratio of unconfined compressive to tensile strength), use of actual tensile data in the calculations for the Hoek brown failure criterion is considered to be a simpler and more robust approach to the use of a tensile cutoff based on empirical criteria such as that of Fairhurst (1964). We advocate the fitting a failure curve using compressive and tensile test data as the most reliable means of calculating mi, while at the same time satisfying requirements as originally advocated by Hoek relating to the appropriate triaxial confining stress range (?3?max = 0.5?c) and sufficient (>5) evenlyspread data points. In the absence of triaxial data the use of R provides a practical means of obtaining estimates of mi that are more robust than guideline values."

The unique ability of fluorine to react and form compounds with al-most all other chemicals has made it one of the important elements in modern chemistry. Research and development over the past thirty years have resulted in a current annual production of fluorine chemicals that is both technically and economically important to industry. Because many of these chemicals and products are relatively new, and most have properties that are not duplicated by other materials, the present uses are expanding rapidly and new applications are being reported continually. Fluorspar, the only immediate and practical source of fluorine, is therefore an important mineral. This fact has been recognized in major industrial areas such as the United States and Western Europe, but has received little attention in Canada.

In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the mining geological conditions such as that the Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield is largely situated in the hills and gullies zones, and the coal reservoir has the features such as the low metamorphic degree, large coal seam thickness, simple coal matrix texture, high permeability and small CBM content and so on, it discusses the key technologies such as the development pattern of CBM, well location arrangement, drilling and well completion technology and fracturing technology and so on. It indicates that the underbalanced drilling and the cavity well completion based on the reservoir protection will be the development directions of the CBM development technology in this area.
