The satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) has significantly changed the way site operations are carried out in surface mining. The GPS has impacted safety, productivity, fleet efficiency, and maintenance practices. However, no comparable global localization system exists for underground mines. This paper discusses recent work in the application of ideas from the mobile robotics research community to the problem of real-time vehicle positioning in underground drift networks. Related previous work recently focused on the creation of globally consistent 2D maps of underground environments that possess sufficient detail to be used for underground localization. Our current work entails the development of a GPS-like system for mobile mining equipment, with results given from both laboratory and field experiments.

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. Conventional project valuation techniques, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) method, are more frequently being criticised for the manner in which they consider the interacting effects of uncertainty and project structure (including management flexibility) on project value. Modern asset pricing (MAP; often called ?real options valuation? when applied to the analysis of flexibility) is a more general valuation framework that corrects many of the shortcomings of common valuation methods. Previous mining applications of MAP have tended to treat the ore deposit as a homogenous entity. While useful for demonstration purposes, this is inadequate for practical application in industry. This paper presents a MAP valuation example that allows for the heterogeneous nature of an ore deposit. It shows that deposit structure may increase the complexity of the mine planner?s decision so that results of a standard DCF analysis, or a simple MAP analysis that ignores the details of deposit structure, are misleading. In the example, a management is considering the development of an adjacent low-grade zone while mining operations in a high-grade zone are ongoing. If the low-grade zone is developed before high-grade reserves are exhausted, the proposed development will include both low-grade zone development and a capacity expansion to handle additional low-grade reserve production. If development of these reserves is delayed until the high-grade reserves are depleted, then the low-grade reserves can be developed without a capacity expansion. A typical DCF analysis would reduce the management?s decision problem to three alternatives: 1) continue mining only in the highgrade reserves, 2) immediately develop the low-grade reserves and expand capacity, and 3) delay low-grade zone development until the high-grade reserves are exhausted. The model presented here allows the management to reconsider the development and capacity expansion decision on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably. The model presented here extends the ability of mine planners to describe actual project structure while using the MAP valuation framework that is already noted for its capacity to combine project uncertainty and risk insights with a dynamic project description.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.

FOR forty years cyanide men have been intensively engaged on the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores. So far as we know, the processes used today were-with the important exception of the concentration plus high-lime process at the Victor mill (1915)-in use, or had been tried, in the earl y years of the century. Roasting, bromocyanide, ordinary cyanide, table and vanner concentration, floating and treating the concentrate, roasting con-centrates prior to treatment, etc., all were used at Kalgoorlie in 1904 or earlier. Flotation, followed by shipment of the concentrate to the Golden Cycle mill, was the practice at the Vindicator mine, Cripple Creek, for some years prior to 1917. Similar practice was employed in the Portland Independence mill at Victor, Colorado, and was lacer superseded by the table concentration, high-lime cyanide treatment of rails of the older Portland Victor mill. During all this time, an immense amount of research was being clone on these ores by the staffs of numberless companies. Conclusions were drawn and mills built. But if the results of one per cent of this research were ever published in sufficient detail for intelligent use by others, the Lake Shore staff has been unable to discover them, or does not recall having clone so. Government laboratories-as for instance chose of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, in or about 1927-have touched upon certain methods in their publications, but they simply have not had the time to finish the job. The paper by W. E. Johnston, Tellurides-Problem or Alibi? (E. & M.]., Aug., 1933), aroused wide interest and comment. It published conclusions, some right and some wrong, and gave the evidence adduced by the author i:n support thereof. Conclusions published without supporting evidence are to most of us worse than no conclusions at all. We suggest chat, if even one-tenth of the operators had published full, detailed results of their laboratory work, ad vance in the treatment of sulpho-telluride ores would have been very much accelerated. Therefore, we venture to inflict upon the Institute a compendium of the results of laboratory work performed during the past few years at the Lake Shore mill. It is really a summary of the more interesting results to date, prepared by the mill staff for their own use and benefit. But we hope chat the discussion under any heading is so detailed chat it will be intelligible to anyone interested in that phase of the subject.

"Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). "The conditioning of natural gas to meet contract pipeline specifications involves in the majority of cases in Western Canada, the appropriation of substantial capital expenditures for treating and processing installations. It is therefore of vital importance to the owners and producers of natural gas to arrive at an appreciation of the economics pertaining to the production and surface handling of their gas reserves at the earliest possible stage of field development. The treating and processing of natural gas often results in considerable changes in composition and related physical characteristics between the wellhead and the point of delivery of the saleable gas. This paper presents a general outline of engineering calculations which can be applied in the pre-determination of the effects that surface handling of gas will have on the composition and physical characteristics of sale-able gas. Emphasis has been placed on the calculation of hydrocarbon dew-points, heating values and shrinkages prevailing at the various stages in the surface handling of natural gas. It is believed that advance information indicating the approximate ranges of these physical properties will facilitate process selection and will provide a basis for the estimation of capital and operating costs of process installations."

Diametrically faced borehole breakout observations are a fairly good indication of magnitude of the secondary stresses acting perpendicular to the borehole. In cases of low in situ stresses, where borehole breakouts are not observed naturally, it is possible to increase the prevailing stress state around the borehole by increasing the rock temperature. When the temperature is increased sufficiently, thermally induced borehole breakouts will occur. By implementing the temperature increase in boreholes located at excavated tunnels, it is also possible to study the effect of the near-field stresses caused by the excavation. The near-field stress state changes as a function of borehole depth, thus increasing the information available from experiment. To study the feasibility of this proposed low cost method, a Borehole Thermal Spalling (BTS) experiment was executed in ONKALO Underground Rock Characterization Facility, in Western Finland in 2014. The first borehole pilot test with the method was conducted in ONKALO at the POSE niche in already at May 2010, with the second pilot test following in August 2010 at Äspö HRL. The major objective of the experiments was to define the trend of the maximum in situ stress component, while also providing knowledge of the in situ spalling strength of the ONKALO rock mass. The stress state in ONKALO is nearly isotropic in horizontal layer, causing problems for the use of more traditional stress measurement methods. With boreholes heated over long interval, the weakest rock parts are observed to fail, thus providing statistical confidence. For these reasons, continuous test sections have an advantage in ONKALO, compared to spatially limited stress measurement methods such as overcoring and hydraulic fracturing. The BTS experiment is conducted in 9 meter deep vertical boreholes located at the POSE niche, situated -345 m depth below the ground surface. The boreholes used within the BTS experiment are located in migmatitic granite, in an experiment area where the surrounding stress state and the rock strength are fairly well known. The prior knowledge of the stresses is favourable for the experiment, as it requires careful planning and iterations to determine the appropriate heating power domain. Too low heating power will not be sufficient to cause borehole breakout, while too high heating power causes breakout in all directions thus making determination of stress direction hard or impossible. The initial state of the borehole and induced borehole breakouts will be monitored using acoustic televiewer logging (ABI) and optical borehole logging (OBI) imaging techniques. Fracture mechanics modelling is used in planning of the experiment, also in back-analysis to link the observed breakout angle to stress state. Both the pilot test in 2010 and BTS test in 2014 resulted in similar borehole breakout direction. The results are in line with so called EDZ & VT1 stress interpretation, revealed the maximum horizontal component bearing the magnitude of 21.5 MPa, with the trend of 166°.

The history of electrolytic copper production in Finland is closely connected with the industrialization of Finland and events of the Second World War. Production of cathode copper by electrowinning from the processing of Outokumpu ore started in 1913 based on the Hybinette nickel process, however due to the poor performance of this process, the plant was closed in 1929. Outokumpu commenced copper smelting at Imatra in eastern Finland in 1936 producing blister copper for refining outside the country. Due to the threating military situation, a new electrolytic copper refinery was built in 1941 at Pori in western Finland to refine the anodes. This was the first electrolytic copper refinery in Finland. It was built with 108 cells having a capacity of 12,000 tonnes/y. In addition, the smelter was relocated to nearby Harjavalta in 1944–1945. To fulfill the war reparations included in the peace treaty with the Soviet Union, a doubling of the smelter capacity was realised, with the Pori refinery capacity increasing to 20,000 tonnes/y in 1946 by adding additional cells. The cornerstone of Finnish metallurgical technology — Outokumpu flash smelting — was invented with the new technology commissioned at Harjavalta in 1949 replacing the electric furnace and providing a further increase in copper output with subsequent enlargement of the refinery. By 1963, the plant consisted of 380 cells with a capacity of 48,000 tonnes/y of cathode copper. The Pori electrolytic copper refinery has operated continuously since 1941. Commencing in 2004 the Pori refinery has been part of the Boliden group of Sweden. The most recent plant upgrade was in 2007 with the installation of permanent cathode technology. In 2017, the production of the Pori refinery was 133,000 tonnes of copper cathode, 2,300 tonnes of nickel sulphate, along with 66 tonnes of silver and 4.6 tonnes of gold. This paper describes these outstanding achievements. INTRODUCTION In 1809 the Kingdom of Sweden was defeated by the Russian Empire in the Finnish War, and Finland was annexed by the Russian Empire as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Finland’s commercial and industrial interests were developed to serve the Empire’s needs. Finland had raw materials, but at the start of the 20th century Finnish industry was based on the use of wood as raw material and agricultural products. The mining industry was only a few percent of the country’s industrial production.

"As sulfide zinc ore deposits become exhausted, nonsulfide zinc ore deposits become the other resource for zinc production. However, flotation for zinc recovery from nonsulfide deposits is much more difficult than the flotation of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production only if a suitable processing technology is developed. In this regard, research efforts are being devoted to the flotation of nonsulfide zinc oxide minerals. Some common methods which have been used for the flotation of zinc oxide minerals include sulfidization-flotation, activation, and direct flotation with anionic and cationic collectors. The traditional flotation techniques have low efficiency and difficulty in separation and recovery of the zinc minerals from gangue minerals, for example, smithsonite (ZnCO3) from other carbonate gangue minerals and hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) from silicate gangue minerals. In this study potassium lauryl phosphate was evaluated as a collector for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals. Results from contact angle and microflotation experiments at pH 6–9 show that hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) can be floated from quartz and that smithsonite (ZnCO3) can be floated from calcite. However, when dodecylamine, which is a common collector reported in literature for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals, was used as collector, no significant difference between nonsulfide zinc minerals and gangue minerals was observed at any pH value. Initial evaluation suggests that potassium lauryl phosphate is effective at low concentration and may be a promising collector for zinc oxide mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONBefore the twentieth century, zinc was mainly produced from nonsulfide ores (Large, 2001; Gilg, Boni, & Cook, 2008). With the development of differential flotation processes in the late 19th century major production switched from nonsulfide zinc sources to sulfide zinc ores (Hitzman, Reynolds, Sangster, Allen, & Carman, 2003; Gilg et al., 2008). However, as it is becoming more difficult to find new sulfide ores, recovery from nonsulfide deposits is being considered. Nonsulfide flotation for zinc recovery is much more difficult than the flotation recovery of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production if a suitable technology is developed. Zinc and lead oxide ores are difficult to beneficiate ores due to their similar floatability with gangue, high solubility in water, and the influence of slimes (Fa, Miller, Tao, & Li, 2005). In order to improve the performance of oxidized minerals, lots of effort is being devoted to this field of study (Ejtemaei & Mahdi, 2014)."

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

Canada is currently the world's largest supplier of zinc concentrates and is also a major producer of zinc metal. This dominant position in the world's zinc market is a fairly recent circumstance and, in fact, the country's zinc industry was founded only in the early part of the twentieth century. By contrast, the American zinc industry was well established by the mid-nineteenth century, largely based on technology originally imported from the still older European practice. Initial attempts to create a viable Canadian zinc smelter were based on the traditional practice and were unsuccessful; success came only with new electrolytic technology, much of which was developed domestically. The purpose of this paper is to outline the early attempts to produce metallic zinc in Canada and to trace the gradual development of these first efforts into a viable zinc industry based on modern science and technology.

Mineralogical studies and concentration tests were conducted on samples from an oolitic iron deposit from the Peace River district in Alberta to determine what concentrate grades and metal recoveries could be obtained. The samples assayed 32 to 37 wt. % Fe, and consisted of goethite, nontronite, ferruginous opal, siderite , quartz, amorphous phosphate and illite . Flotation with fatty acids yielded the best over-all results. A flotation concentrate from a composite sample of the iron horizon assayed, by weight, 43.0% Fe, 12.3% SiO2 , 1.9% CaD, 0.9% MgO, 4.5% Al2O3 and 2.0% P2O5 and lost 17.2% on ignition, for an iron recovery of 48.8% and a silica rejection of 80%. When heated to drive off the water, the concentrate assayed 52 w t. % Fe and 14. 8% w t. % SiO2

The competitive pressure, the increasing energy costs and the environmental regulations impose substantial challenges to the definition of power plants serving industrial facilities. Primary mining and metallurgical facilities have even greater challenges because they are often located remotely, where the fuel supply can be a problem. The absence of a power grid imposes challenges on the reliability and quality of the electrical energy supply. In addition, the facilities usually require thermal energy too, not only electricity. This paper outlines these types of issues that have to be considered when defining a cogeneration plant integrated with a remote located industrial facility. It is addressed to the ?users? of cogeneration facilities rather than to ?generators.? The focus is on analyzing various site-specific design considerations to pre-screen the feasible cogeneration alternatives and minimize the number of options to be analyzed from the economics viewpoint. This approach could substantially reduce the engineering effort and schedule during the feasibility phase of the project. Part 1 of this paper (Berkley, 2003) provides a basic understanding of cogeneration plants of various types to establish a common language. Part 2 outlines and analyzes specific issues that could be of help in the definition of cogeneration installations for remotely located industrial facilities, with a focus on mining and primary metallurgical plants.

This paper presents a novel action recognition method for observing human workers using interactions between actions and related objects on an internal construction site. This method can be used to measure work rates for labour productivity monitoring. This monitoring is critical because the performance of a construction project is significantly impacted by labour productivity. However, construction sites are generally crowded with a large number of workers and objects. Such congestion disrupts the accurate, automatic recognition of construction workers? actions. This congestion is one reason that existing automatic action recognition studies of construction areas mainly focus on workers? actions themselves. However, the crowded conditions mean that sites could offer a great deal of clues that could be used for automatic action recognition. According to psychological studies, interactions clearly take place between human actions and related objects, such as between hammering and a hammer. Humans use these interactions to recognize actions or objects more accurately. On the construction site, workers, materials, tools, and equipment are carefully planned out ahead of actual construction. The categories of workers and objects are pre-defined and, as noted, specific interactions define relations between worker actions and objects. In this paper, the interactions are limited to human workers and their hand-held objects. Action recognition results can be combined with hand-held object information to improve recognition accuracy. With the limited interactions, experiments in this paper show a significant improvement in action recognition. This paper describes the utilization of these interactions to improve construction action recognition accuracy based on human skeleton data and 2D color video from Microsoft KINECT sensor.

Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

Four conditions are commonly accepted as being needed for the development of native sulphur deposits in sedimentary rocks : (1) ample sulphate-bearing evaporite, normally anhydritic; (2) proximity to petroleum deposits; (3) a hydrodynamic system of communication between these two; (4) a stratigraphic or structural trap to prevent escape of the sulphur and sulphur -bearing reaction products. When any of these requisites are absent, apparently no significant residual bio-epigenetic sulphur deposit will form. These requirements are, however, satisfied in some areas, which include both the Triassic and Devonian evaporites of northeastern British Columbia.

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. Le présent article traite de ces questions, discute de la géologie du manteau, des principales roches-mères des diamants et de l’impact des processus dans le manteau, compare les propriétés et les caractéristiques des micro- et des macrodiamants et définit les étapes pour identifier et mitiger le risque de résorption des diamants et son impact sur la relation entre la taille et la qualité des diamants."
