The claims now held by Mount Wright Iron Mines Co. Limited were acquired by staking in 1956, 1957 and 1958, i.e., some time after the major deposits of the Quebec Cartier Mining and Normanvi!le Mining Co. (formerly Quebec Cobalt & Exploration Ltd.) were already discovered and partly outlined. The choice of the location of the Mount Wright hold-ings was governed simply by the -availability of ground still open to staking and by its proximity to properties held by major iron companies. Mount Wright Iron Mines had no previous knowledge of the geology and no aeromagnetic results were available to it to guide the choice of areas to be staked. In order to explore the newly ac-quired claims it was decided to make a grid of widely spaced magnetic profiles on the ground rather than use aeromagnetics. This afforded the possibility of making some geological observations simultaneously with the geophysical measurements.

Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. "A 2D finite element modelling (FEM), based on pure Lagrangian approach, is developed for studying the serrated chip formation during high speed machining (HSM) of 7075-T651 alloy. The solution was achieved using a commercial software package, ABAQUS/Explicit v6.13. The Johnson-Cooke (JC) constitutive equation is used to describe the work material behaviour. Moreover, the JC damage equation is implemented into the FEM to take into account for the shear localization during the serrated chip formation. Modified Coulomb friction model has been used to characterize the sliding/sticking effects on the tool-chip interface with the friction coefficient and shear flow stress determined by force calibration and machining data, respectively. The proposed FEM is validated using experimental data obtained in HSM of 7075-T651. The FEM was able to predict accurately serrated chip morphology. The intensity of chip segmentation was found to increase with cutting speed.INTRODUCTIONHigh speed machining (HSM) is one of the most used processes for manufacturing aircraft parts with aluminum alloys. For aluminum alloys, the use of HSM increases metal removal rate and reduces the formation of built up edges and burrs. However, it was found that serrated (also named segmented or sawtooth chip) and discontinuous chips can be produced during HSM of some high strength aluminum alloys, such as 7075-T6 alloy (Rao & Shin, 2001). Many parameters were found to affect the segmented/discontinuous chip formation during the machining of aluminum alloys.There are two cases in which the serrated chip can forms: the first is when machining hardened materials (Morehead, Huang, & Luo, 2007), and the second, when machining ductile materials with a cutting speed higher than a critical value (Barry & Byrne, 2002). Different theories and models were developed in order to explain the formation mechanism of such kind of chips. According to Astakhov (2006), the segmented chip formation is attributed to variations in stress and plastic deformation states, and resulting temperatures on the cutting zone. Liyao et al. (2013) stated that the segmented chip formation was mainly attributable to adiabatic shear instability/catastrophic strain localization. Others (Vyas & Shaw, 1999) suggest that the fracture/crack propagation mechanism is at the root of chip generation."

Flotation works very well for particles that are typically in the range 20 to 150 µmin diameter, for base metal ores. In this range, it is possible to get quite high recoveries in conventional flotation machines. Outside this range, the recoveries decline progressively, whether it be with the very fine or the coarse end of the size spectrum. In this paper, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery are briefly reviewed, together with strategies for future work. Recent progress in the author's laboratory will be described. These include the Concorde Cell, which takes advantage of the high dissipation rates in the shock wave created when a gas-liquid mixture reaches supersonic velocities. The environment thus created is very beneficial for the flotation of ultrafines. For coarse particles, the reasons for the drop-off in recovery can be related to the highly turbulent nature of the pulp in a conventional flotation cell. To improve recovery, it is necessary to find a way of bringing particles and bubbles into contact in a quiescent environment. A new process for coarse particle flotation will be described, in which a fluidized bed is created in the flotation cell. The flow conditions are very gentle, and the high solids concentration leads to rapid rates of capture of the particles. Experimental results are presented. It is apparent that the maximum floatable size for coal and minerals can be increased by a factor often over the limits found in current practice. Advances

In conventional Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RK-EF) laterite nickel processing, management of dust continues to be problematic. A more efficient processing of dust represents an opportunity for energy efficiency, increased production, and productivity. PT International Nickel Indonesia (PTI), together with Vale Base Metals Technology Development (VBMTD), has successfully developed and implemented a novel flowsheet enhancement that capitalizes on these opportunities. In the novel flowsheet, the dust recycle stream is moved forward in the RK-EF laterite nickel smelting process. The dust is injected into the kiln's main burner, as opposed to being recycled to the dryers. A similar treatment of dust is commonly practiced in the cement industry; however, application to nickel smelters has not been fully developed to date. This paper describes this dust insufflation technology, the process through which it was developed for laterite nickel processing, and summarizes the lessons learned. A key conclusion is that successful new technology development requires a multi-disciplinary team involving members from research and development, study management, engineering consulting firms, project implementation management, process technology and operations.

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. "Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers.HistoryThe Iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 19 4 9' however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.The mining facilities, crushing plant, and concentrator were in operation by the early part of 1962. In the summer of 1961, a decision was made to build a pelletizing plant adjacent to the concentrator. This plant was designed, erected and placed in operation during 1962 and the first half of 1963. Since the completion of the pelletizing plant, additional expansions to both the pellet plant and concentrator have taken place in 1967 and 1973. Today, the Carol Project has the capacity to produce 20 million tonnes of concentrate from which 10.5 million tonnes of pellets can be produced.The period 1980-85 spans a period of energy crisis, world-wide recession, and a consequent re-structuring of the North American steel industry as it struggles to survive in an arena of excess world steel making capacity, government subsidized industries, and the increasing competition from overseas and from developing countries.The media headlines over the past few years echo the woes of the industry and the strategy plans for survival of the fittest. Hong Kong has a dense distribution of utility services laid under its road network. Utility undertakers frequently demand road openings to install new services and/or maintain existing ones. Road openings can cause troubles to the road network and negatively impact the public interest. Highways Department is responsible for managing road openings in Hong Kong under the Land (Miscellaneous Provisions) Ordinance. Highways Department has spent a lot of efforts to computerize excavation permit processing and utility management. The computerized system has gone through several generations and the current one is called the excavation permit management system (XPMS). On the one hand, the XPMS handles various excavation permit processing functions including permit application/approval/refusal/issuance/extension/termination, fees/costs, permit conditions, and permit period assessment; on the other hand, the XPMS accounts for some important utility management issues such as spatial check, coordination of multiple openings, traffic management, audit inspection, and defect liability. This paper discusses how the application, coordination, and other administrations of an excavation permit are eased by using the XPMS in Hong Kong. Background information such as the governing legal and regulatory framework, and Highways Department?s administrative structure is introduced. The system architecture and advantages of the XPMS are presented. The work procedures and various functions of the XPMS are studied in detail.

Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.

Palabora Mining Copper has a unique ore body composition which unlike other copper ore bodies has three main components in significant proportions; these are copper bearing ore, magnetite and dolerite. The high content of dolerite, a hard barren material, creates a high proportion of pebbles which normally are recycled back to the mill. This action increases the mill bearing pressure and power progressively until corrective actions are taken. A logical action to solve the pebbles generation would be to incorporate a pebble crusher. This in fact was done however two fundamental issues were encountered; the high content of magnetite and existence of a cyclone classification section. Due to the high content of magnetite, metal detectors have not been able to work efficiently to separate tramp metal which causes damage to the pebble crushers. The existence of cyclones in the circuit had a detrimental effect on the final product when the pebbles crusher was online producing coarse sandy material. Due to the difficulties in treating pebbles via conventional procedures and the unique Palabora ore composition and characteristics, sorting technology was investigated at laboratory and pilot scale. It was found that a combination of optical and electromagnetic sorting could efficiently separate dolerite from the copper bearing and magnetite ores. This paper reports the findings of the laboratory and pilot scale work performed and discusses the additional benefits to the circuit.

"High-level radioactive wastes are stored in large underground storage tanks made of low-carbon steel. The wastes consist of concentrated solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the radionuclides 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV), which in turn modifies the kinetics of corrosion of the storage tank. To understand the influence of technetate ions on the corrosion of steel, electrochemical polarization studies of A 537 steel samples were carried out in 1 M NaNO3 + 0 .05 M S r(NO3)2 + 0.1 M NaOH with and without addition of HReO4 at different temperatures (24 – 85 °C). The concentration of HReO4 was varied from 0.014 – 0.04 M.INTRODUCTIONAqueous processing of spent nuclear materials generates a large amount of high-level radioactive wastes. The wastes are primarily salt solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate which also contain fission products such as 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. Among the high level radioactive fission products, Tc-99 is of great importance because of its high concentration, long half-life (2.1 x 105 years), high solubility in geologic waters as technetate, and rapid diffusivity through the geologic systems. The solubility of technetate ions varies depending on the oxidizing conditions prevailing in the storage containers. High level radioactive wastes are stored in single shell or double shell tanks made of low carbon steels such as ASTM type A15, A516-70 and A537. Most of the available literature on corrosion of steel in simulated radio active waste environments pertains to nitrate induced stress corrosion cracking (Subramanian & Mickalonis, 2005). The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV). Corrosion of steel and formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) will affect adsorption and reduction of Tc species. The radioactive species can irreversibly be sorbed on the steel surface by oxidation of Fe(II) to more stable Fe(III) and fixed as less soluble Tc(IV)/Fe(III). The solubility of Tc species is also affected by other factors such as dissolved oxygen, local pH, temperature etc. How the corrosion behavior of steel will be affected in the presence of Tc species is not clearly understood.Cartledge (Cartledge, 1960) demonstrated that passivation of iron can be achieved in the presence of oxygen along with suitable inhibitor ions/molecules of the general formula XO4 n-, such as pertechnetate (TcO4 -). The pertechnetate ion is univalent. Since it is derived from a strong acid, no buffering action can be expected from this ion. The redox potential of the reaction (1) is 0.738 VSHE (Pourbaix, 1974)."

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

"Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."

"Over 90,000 feet of raise have been bored at International Nickel underground mining operations throughout the Sudbury District since the advent of raise boring in the early part of July, 1964. With a total of 10 raise borers on hand at this time, techniques have improved steadily since introduction at INCO mines. The first unit, designed for use in rock of low compressive strength, had to be modified and redesigned to cope with Sudbury Area Precambrian rock. As equipment and boring techniques improved, a specially designed machine for larger holes was developed and is now in use. More powerful units, with a thrust capacity of up to 750,000 pounds, are under investigation. Raises have been bored up to 84-inch diameter, and the changeover to 5- and 6-foot flat reaming heads with improved cutter design has increased performance substantially. As a result, 5-foot-diameter raises have been completed to a length of 750 feet and 6- and 7-foot raises to over 500 feet. Reference is also made to the drilling of over 23,000 feet of drainage and sand-fill holes, ranging up to 7% inches in diameter, with smaller underground rotary drill equipment.Finally, a look into the future indicates the need for further improvements in equipment design to permit economic boring of 7- to 8-foot-diameter raises in Sudbury Area ground types."

"Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. Particular attention has been given to desulphurization and to the suppression of pollutants in combustion systems.In the area of non-fuel utilization of coal, interest has centered on plant nutrients and on a series of coal-based carbons which, inter alia, possess utility as filtration media.Other projects included the development of improved sampling and analytical methods, investigations into the effect of storage on coal proper-ties and R&D in solids pipelining. "In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin. "The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

The phases of a typical exploration program for sand and gravel resources include: (1) collection and assessment of existing information; (2) air photo interpretation and remote sensing; (3) ground investigation and mapping; (4) sampling and testing; and (5) data storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation. Depending on the purpose, time frame and funding available for the study, these phases, and the various techniques used within each phase, will vary. Once a sand and gravel deposit has been located, defined in size and quality, and found to be suitable for a given purpose, it can then be classified as a granular resource.
