The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

The erratic and localised occurrence of economic gold grades is a common feature of high-nugget effect gold veins. The nugget effect is a consequence of small-scale geologically controlled enrichment, and the inclusion or exclusion of sparse gold particles because of the sampling process. Such deposits do not always contain visible or coarse gold, and can be characterised by fine gold particles. Economic grade accumulations are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren to low-grade material. Problems are often encountered where small sample types (eg drill core or channel samples) often vastly understate in situ grade, due to their general inability to intersect rare gold particles. As a result, the definition of grade and its distribution is often challenging, and leads to substantial resource uncertainty. Proxies, or indicators for grade, can help the geologist gain a better understanding of grade distribution and grade potential. These are based upon geological (eg mineralogical, textural, etc) and/or geochemical (eg specific elemental ratios, fluid inclusion compositions, elemental correlations, etc) criteria. The paper discusses the use and application of such proxies through three case studies.

St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.

The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure. This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked contrast to the pyritetelluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related.These highly siliceous telluride-free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile lodes, while possessing an apparent overall relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E. dipping strike faults.INTRODUCTIONThe Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area lies N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie and is separated from the Golden Mile by the Golden Pike fault. The orebodies discussed lie in an area approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide (Fig. 1).The area includes the site of the original discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie district in 1893. There have been numerous mining operations over the years, the bulk of the production coming from two orebodies, Mt. Charlotte and Hannan's North. These have provided approximately 900,000 tons of the 1,100,000 tons of ore mined in the area.Production to date from the principal orebodies in the area has been as follows.1.
