A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. Thermo Fisher Scientific is the worldÆs leading supplier of analysers for laboratories and process industries. The companyÆs X-ray fluorescence (XRF)-based slurry immersion probes were originally developed by the acquired Amdel Instrumentation. These analysers have found limited application within wet beneficiation plants for measurement of iron. The recent trend of renewed efforts to maximise recovery from existing resources and lower costs has increased industry interest in online analysis. In the mid-1990s the company developed online analysers (the light element slurry analyser û LESA) for slurry applications using the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method. The company has successfully installed LESA for the direct measurement of lighter impurity elements in Brazilian plants using flotation for rejection of silica. A case study is presented. The PGNAA technique has the unique ability to provide elemental analysis of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. The company released its eighth generation cross belt Omni analyser using PGNAA in 2007. Results from a recent project with sinter are presented. The Niton range of hand-held XRF analysers is also supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. These handy devices are finding widespread use in the mining industry to provide quick and easy analyses in exploration settings. In contrast to PGNAA this is a surface technique. A prototype for light element analysis is being tested for iron ore.

Rather like the mythical "Economic Man" "an employer" in this context must necessarily be an abstraction, and the views possessed by such an abstraction, a composite of many views known to have been expressed. Not even the complex Conciliation and Arbitration legislation in this country provides any helpful specifications, except in one peculiar particular. The Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Act provides an almost totally tautological definition, except in that one oddity referred to above. It is this : "An employer means any employer in any industry, and includes any person who is usually an employer in an industry, and also includes a Club." No doubt there is some perfectly justifiable reason for such specific and unique particularity in an otherwise meaning- less definition. That need not trouble us in this exercise.

Pit lakes may form when open cut mining leaves a pit void that then fills with ground and surface waters. This often replaces terrestrial ecosystems that existed prior to mining with an aquatic ecosystem, affording an opportunity to improve regional aquatic biodiversity values through targeted aquatic restoration (McCullough and van Etten, 2011). Restoration theory provides guidance when restoring disturbed systems towards landscapes that are of regional value and relevance. But how do we identify a restoration target for a novel aquatic habitat that only exists in the new post-mining landscape? This paper presents a process of first identifying and then surveying local representative aquatic systems, to provide a direction for pit lake restoration efforts and achievement criteria for pit lake relinquishment, using a case study from a sand mining operation amongst wetlands in south-western Australia.The company mines silica sands following mechanical removal of topsoil and then extraction of the ore from below the watertable by dredging. Assessment of wetland and riparian vegetation was achieved through the establishment and measurement of temporary monitoring transects across five natural wetlands in the Kemerton area. Several more regional wetlands were also visited and observations made to supplement and validate these data.Distinct vegetation zonation was found across each wetland, although typically wetland basins were unvegetated or filled with younger woody plants with patchy distributions. Fringing riparian vegetation consisted of few species (commonly the paperbark Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and the sedge Lepidosperma longitudinale), but community composition and structure were variable between wetlands. The pattern of vegetation seen across natural wetlands was best explained by topography and soil chemistry, with low lying wetland areas more likely to experience regular flooding and accumulate organic matter and nutrients.In conclusion, where they are available, regional natural waterbodies may constitute the best valid restoration goal. Nevertheless, the goal may need to consist of a range of closure design opportunities, rather than a single target.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

I have headed this paper with a question and for the impatient among you ûthe answer is no we have not run out of developments but, and it is a big æbutÆ, we need to be innovative and ahead of the game or ænoÆ will be æyesÆ before we know it.Why do I believe that our future lies in innovation? Thirty years ago, knowledge doubled every 14 years. It is now doubling every seven years. In 1965, Gordon Moore, one of the founders of the chip maker Intel, made an observation that growth in memory chip performance is doubled every 18 months which became known as MooreÆs Law. Now there is fibre law, where the transmission line capacity doubles every nine months and storage capacity, under disc law, doubles every 12 months. What does this mean? Well, firstly there is a massive rise in information flow and availability with no limits in growth for at least the next ten years. Secondly, unlike our grandfathers, we are most unlikely to be employed by the same firm for our working career - we may not even have the choice to stay with the same company. In a phenomenon Richard Foster and Sarah Kaplan (2001), borrowing from Schumpeter, termed æcreative destructionÆ, companies are unable to sustain market-beating levels of performance for more than ten to 15 years. In the 1920s the turnover rate of companies in the United States was 1.5 per cent, so a company could employ almost three generations from the one family. A company had a half life of 60 years. In other words, you could well be in the same working environment as your grandparents. Today the churn rate is estimated to be eight to ten per cent. A company has a half life of five to six years. So for large companies, as an employer or employee or as a contractor, your working environment has a 50 per cent chance of changing in five years. Innovation is the driver of this rapid rate of change. Innovation is not for the faint hearted (Cutler, 2001) but it is the core for success in the global economy. The rate of change in our world is not going to decrease. We must learn, not only to manage change, but to enjoy the process of changing û to ride the tsunami of the knowledge economy.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. The risk from fire remains one of the most serious of underground mine disaster scenarios. The impacts of mine fires on the underground ventilation system and the production of toxic gases have been difficult to model and therefore assessments have relied largely on empirical data, historical precedent and subjective opinions. Underground fire modelling software has had limited availability and been technically challenging and time consuming to use especially for routine mine investigations. There has also been no well-accepted set of assumptions for fire modelling in mines, which has resulted in a lack of confidence in adopting its use more widely. This paper describes modelling of three critical fire scenarios in underground hard rock mines: a fire (LHD) in an underground diesel refuelling facility, a fire in an underground explosives magazine and a fire on an underground ore transport conveyor. Modelling was undertaken using VentsimÆs VentFIREÖ fire simulation module. It describes the basis of design, the key assumptions, the methodology used and provides examples of the outputs, conclusions and recommendations. It reviews the impacts of these fires on egress and entrapment strategies in the mine. Some general principles regarding improvements to ventilation circuit design based on this analysis are also recommended. The design of near-surface civil infrastructure requires detailed consideration of the geological/ geotechnical conditions, excavation geometry and sequence and ground support measures to ensure stability of the underground openings and minimal impact on overlying or adjacent infrastructure. Twin parallel road tunnels have been designed and built with connecting cross passages and a piggyback busway tunnel as part of a large infrastructure project in Australia. The tunnels were excavated in poor to fair quality rocks using road headers. Temporary ground support includes shotcrete, rock bolts and canopy tubes. Extensive numerical analyses have been performed to analyse the expected behaviour of the tunnels during excavation, including two-dimensional analyses using UDEC and three-dimensional analyses using FLAC3D. Structural defects in the rock are explicitly included in the 2D analyses to examine the potential for localised ground instability. The stress redistribution is captured by the 3D modelling with an accurate representation of the complex excavation geometry and the detailed excavation and support sequence. This paper presents the modelling methodology, numerical results and discussions on integrating both 2D and 3D analyses to achieve reasonable design.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

Alluvial mining even of shallow deposits is often economically a marginal proposition and causes significant disruption of the land surface through the need for large scale excavation. In-situ leaching using chlorine-based solutions eliminates the need for excavation, the disruption of surface activities, and may greatly reduce processing costs and improve recovery especially of fine gold. A spreadsheet model has been developed to design and analyse the economics of in-situ leaching of alluvial deposits. In-situ leaching of shallow deposits may be achieved in a number of ways including solution infiltration via perimeter ditches or the use of injection and production wells. In most instances deeper alluvials may only be processed using well systems. Two deposits are analysed in this paper. The first consists of one metre of payable wash beneath one metre of overburden. Some thirty fields per year are treated processing 450 000 BCM per year at a cut-off grade of around $4/tonne ($8/rn3 or the gold value equivalent of 0.26 gh or 0.52 g/m3). The principal costs are well drilling and labour. Sensitivity analysis indicates that doubling the throughput halves the cost. The economics of the project are relatively insensitive to reagent costs and consumptions, and halving the recovery doubles the cut-off grade. Shallow deposits treated using the infiltration ditch system may be marginally cheaper and more conveniently managed although this depends on the relative cost of digging the perimeter ditches. In a second example, deep leads with one metre of wash beneath 30 metres of overburden necessitate significant drilling and feature reduced throughputs as a consequence. In the example chosen 30 fields a year are processed for an annual throughput of 65 000 tonnes costed at around $20/tonne (1.4 g/t Au equivalent, $40 /m3). Sensitivity analysis indicates that throughput, and drilling cost per metre are not important but there is a high sensitivity to recovery and to the depth to payable wash.

G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. The quality of the project execution and commitment by the company will ensure that maximum value can be delivered from Martabe, not just for the current mine life but from the significant exploration potential that exists on the large tenement area that the company has access to for 30 plus years.This paper will deal with the physical challenges associated with the design, the Indonesian government regulatory requirements for mine development, the social aspects of building a world-class project in a developing area, the in-country commitment necessary for any project development anywhere in the world and the successful funding arrangements for the mine development.CITATION:Albert, P G, Siahaan, L H D and Duffy, T J V, 2012. The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is a gold mine that is located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Drilling and blasting activity is applied in order to support mining production. Drilling and Blasting (D&B) planning is conducted by its engineers. A drilling and blasting contractor conducts drilling and blasting activity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) in explosive charging sheet application to increase blast efficiency. The function of the scaled depth of burial is to maintain stemming height above explosive charge in order to prevent the ‘over energy’ condition, to reduce the excessive fly rock possibility, to maintain rock fragmentation (digger’s productivity) and to increase blast efficiency. The focus of this paper is to implement the scaled depth of burial as a reference in D&B planning and practice, especially in designing stemming height. The purpose of this paper is to validate that the scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool in D&B practice in PT.IMK. However, scaled depth of burial cannot applied as an engineering tool to determine stemming height above explosive charge for trim blastholes and secondary blasting area. In general, the implementation of the scaled depth of burial in PT.IMK is applicable for production blastholes (ore and waste blasting). In conclusion, it is clear that scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool to create explosive charging sheet and also to increase blast efficiency (ore and waste blasting) in PT.IMK.

Real-time monitoring of mine operating parameters is available at most mines. However, access to these data for an individual operation is typically underutilised by mine managers and technical personnel. Such monitoring systems are typically designed to provide data streams and alarms to a responsible person, but they are not utilised to extract underlying trends or correlate different data groups. Furthermore, multiple monitoring systems are usually implemented at a given site without interconnection between vendors’ systems or connection to any central management, and mine personnel are only exposed to a minimal subset of such data. Thus, it is not easy to analyse and correlate individual data streams and generate information to enhance day-to-day operational decision-making and improve safety and efficiency.This paper addresses the primary challenges associated with centralising data management and effecting greater utilisation of the vast amount of collected data, while at the same time reducing the time and effort required to manage such large data sets. Furthermore, it presents the conceptual design of a database application that can organise, present and analyse data collected by multiple sensors in different environments. The database is designed to operate in a passive manner so that active mine data management systems are not impacted. "This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. Many block caving operations experience difficulties during undercutting, resulting in draw horizon damage, production loss and extensive drift repairs for the life of the block cave. This paper deals specifically with block cave undercut aims strategies, methodologies and management to avoid the problems indicated above.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.
