Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. Since 1948, ValeÆs Matte Separation Plant has been successfully using magnetic separation and froth flotation to separate the copper sulfide, nickel sulfide and Ni-Cu metallic alloy contained in Bessemer matte for downstream processing. Though some equipment upgrades have been performed over the years, the flow sheet has generally remained unchanged since the early 1970s. The need to improve metallurgical performance led to the trial of a scalping flotation column to produce a final copper concentrate ahead of the cleaner circuit feed to take advantage of a high degree of copper mineral liberation, reduce cleaner-recleaner circulating loads and decrease the associated loss of selectivity. Plant results indicated that 50 per cent of copper contained in the rougher concentrate could be recovered at final grade target. Results indicate that up to a 1.5 per cent increase in copper recovery to copper concentrate was achieved during the scalper trial due to a reduction in the generation of fine chalcocite which has historically been observed to report to flotation tailings due to surface contamination. Diamonds occur in N.S.W., Victoria and north west Tasmania. Diamonds from different areas appear to have their own characteristics, lending weight to the suggestion that three or four different sources (different in location and age) have produced the diamonds found in alluvials at quite a number of locations in Eastern Australia. Explorers for kimberlites in Victoria must overcome a number of field difficulties. The writer's approach attempted to find exploration targets by literature search, noting unusual garnet occurrences, and by relating records of diamond occurrences to described mining activity. While the records are biased towards gold, the study did lead to a pipe, located well away from known diamond-bearing alluvials. Core from one test hole has shown this intrusive to include an alkaline ultramafic breccia with many kimberlitic affinities - a breccia containing mantle-derived minerals, but not a true kimberlite. (A detailed rock description is appended to this paper, but is not the purpose of the paper.) Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Increasing the powder factor form 1650 gr/m3 to 2480 gr/m3 by changing the blast pattern design showed that mill throughputs increase five per cent to 30 per cent for the new pattern.CITATION:Hakami, A, Mansouri, H, Ebrahimi Farsangi, M A, Dehghan, M R and Faramarzi, F, 2015. In evaluating the installation of an in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) system for any mine, a number of options are available for each of the dig side, transport and dump side operations. Some of them are moreappropriate than others; given the pit arrangement, the material being handled and the rates at which it needs to be moved. This paper seeks to document the options that might be employed, and to rank them in terms of their applicability at any mine and their practicality overall, with a view to nominating those that would be most suitable for further study.

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

Increasing fuel prices, unavailabilty and high prices of tyres have imposed tremendous challenges for large open pit operations. Carajßs open pit mines, one of the largest iron ore projects in the world, has been particularly affected due to the high amount of giant trucks operating in this site. On the other hand, environmental constraints push the mining industry towards reductions in fossil fuels, noise and waste generation. As a feasible response to these requirements, an alternative mining method for open pit mining, aiming to reduce or even eliminate the need for trucks has been developed, based primarily on coal opencast continuous operations. This innovative approach for open pits involves the replacement of trucks by fully-mobile crushers, bench conveyors and ramp conveyors. Two different applications have been developed for exploiting waste and ore at Carajßs largest pit, named N4E. To make it possible, mine planning paradigms should be replaced leading to new conceptual design of open pits. This paper shows two case studies (waste and ore conceptual design) carried out at Carajßs mines to anticipate and put forward the future of open pit mining, proving that our industry would be greatly affected by this new way of exploitation, reducing thousands of tons of fossil fuels. Productivities can be enhanced and environmental performance greatly improved. In this approach mine automation can be easily implemented reducing operating costs and man's fatigue.

In open pit mining, it is common that the bottleneck to productivity and profit lies in the truck-shovel mining operation, especially as strip ratios and mining intensity have increased with resource depletion and advances in mining equipment capabilities. This paper outlines a study of truck-shovel productivity using a new proprietary discrete event simulation platform for truck-shovel operations called MineDES. The study will specifically address the issue of whether truck queuing at shovels should be considered productive or not, and how mining engineers can determine the optimal truck fleet size for specific operational configurations.The MineDES simulation platform will be described and illustrated, highlighting the features that make it an appropriate tool for conducting the experiments at the heart of this study. The study encompasses a set of experiments, consisting of a number of simple truck-shovel operational scenarios for a benchmark open pit mining operation, which are simulated using MineDES. Each experiment is designed to highlight different factors, which are most important in calculating the ideal truck fleet size and for understanding the marginal productive impact of each additional truck added to the fleet. The scenarios will principally address the issues of how different types and levels of unscheduled equipment downtime and process variation, combined with the traffic delays/congestion arising in more intense mining operations, will affect productivity. The results of the experiments are interpreted using a simple fit-for-purpose cost and revenue model in order to highlight the indicative cost of over- or under-trucked configurations.The study has found that the optimal fleet size that maximises productivity and value will, in the presence of even small process variation, lead to non-zero trucks queuing at shovels on average. As process variations and unscheduled downtime events increase in the truck-shovel system, the required fleet size to optimise productivity and value increases. A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

From 1972 until 1989 when operations were suspended Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL, owned 53.58 per cent by Rio Tinto Limited) operated a large open pit mine and processing facility at Panguna on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea producing copper concentrate containing significant quantities of gold and silver.BCL has a stated vision of recommencing operations at Panguna. In 2008, Rio Tinto, on behalf of BCL, conducted a multi-disciplinary study to assess the technical and financial viability of redeveloping the Panguna operation. One of the key outputs of the study was a Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code compliant mineral resource statement based on the existing block model and fundamental data, archived since mine closure. Historical data (including the resource block model and drill hole data) was recovered from computer archives by a former Panguna mine employee familiar with the various obsolete data formats, thus maintaining an unbroken chain of custody of the data by Rio Tinto since operations were suspended. No additional data were collected as part of this study.The extensive data and documentation archive facilitated a sufficiently detailed evaluation of the fundamental data and model to support an updated resource statement. Table 1 of the JORC Code was used to guide the model validation process.Reconciliation of blasthole and metallurgical plant data with the reserve model, indicated that the copper and gold drill hole composite database was significantly biased towards underestimation in several key domains due to a combination of the following: mineralisation loss during core loss, core loss (minor), vertical drill holes failing to intersect sufficient subvertical mineralised fractures and veins, drill hole spacing too wide, and variable diamond drill hole core size. The resource model evaluation was based on three material types (all previously mined at Panguna), that were defined based on cut-off grade and rock type parameters: direct feed ore – material for delivery directly to the plant, preconcentration and screening ore – subeconomic material beneficiated to produce fines of economic grade, and waste. Three pit shells and designs were generated based on three separate sets of economic parameters. These economic parameters were also used to assign material types to the block model. The three resulting models were then evaluated against the corresponding pit shells.Classification of the resource was approached conservatively due to the inherent bias in the drill hole data. Consequently only Indicated and Inferred resources were tabulated.The study highlighted the importance of maintaining detailed documentation pertaining to resource estimates and operational history, particularly reconciliation, and the value that can be added by a simple, low-cost data compilation exercise.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg >50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. Brockman 2 mine is located in the Pilbara of Western Australia and is operated by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Mineralisation is hosted by synclines where there is structural complexity to focus fluid flow. Mineralisation is hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation. Mining is on 10 m benches and blastholes spaced at 6 - 8 m apart are geologically logged, sampled by shovel cuts, and assayed using X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Blast blocks are digitised by mine geologists to assign destinations of material within blasts. Resource evaluation drilling is on a spacing of 50 m × 50 m across known mineralisation and consists of recent reverse circulation drilling and older open hole percussion drilling. Sampling of resource evaluation drilling is by rotary splitters or riffle splitters, and assaying is by X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Ordinary kriging of resource evaluation produces a long-term resource model. This study examines whether mine planning would be improved by using a blasthole estimate to extrapolate grades into deeper benches and merging the blasthole estimate with the long-term model made using resource evaluation drilling. The two estimates are merged into one model using an inverse weighting based on kriging variance. However, reconciliation results in a test bench show the original estimate made using resource evaluation drilling more closely matches mine geology block outs than does the merged model. This is due to a local trend of more high grade and higher iron grades of high grade in the area. The blasthole estimate of deeper benches must use extrapolation and it is diffi cult to take local trends into account. In contrast, the estimation using resource evaluation drilling is mainly interpolation and is better able to handle local trends.

Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. Enhance Fine Particle Flotation by Hydrodynamic Cavitation Difficulties in fine particle flotation are well documented. Microbubble flotation has been found to greatly improve the recovery of fine particles and in situ gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation incorporated in the design of modern flotation machines has shown great performance in fine particle flotation and potentially in coarse particle flotation. In this presentation, we will provide an overview on gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation and its role in fine particle flotation with focus on the progress made in our research laboratory. Hydrodynamic cavitation was achieved and the critical role of dissolved gases in the liquid was elucidated by visualisation in a high intensity agitation cell. The in situ gas nucleation on fine particles by hydrodynamic cavitation was identified by zeta potential distribution measurement in model systems. Gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cativation was found to effectively aggregate hydrophobised fine particles thereby leading to enhanced flotation kinetics. This is an abstract only. This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.
