The last decade has seen a very rapid development in TBM tunnelling. Some trends are purely technical or economical and others relate more to preferences of different interests. Power levels have more than doubled and thrust levels too. Shield machines are developed to be able to handle harder rock and the open TBMs are made more feasible for `difficult' rock. What is right and what is wrong is more a matter of opinion, but one thing is certain: TBMs now are a useful tool and no longer an experimental work-shop for the enthusiasts.This paper highlights some recent developments and indicates some probable future ones. A few features that have increased the open TBMs' ability to cope with ever harder rock and also to overcome problems with poor rock are discussed in detail, using the Atlas Copco JARVA Mk 27 -the most powerful TBM built so far - as a reference.

PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. "Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. The diverse priorities, drivers and concerns of multiple stakeholders in the minerals industry complicate the integration of sustainable development considerations into mine design, as well as operational and strategic decisions. The ability of the industry to address all role-playersÆ needs, or indeed, to achieve consensus among all role players on the plethora of sustainable development issues seems a noble yet unattainable goal. One of the difficulties in assessing the relative importance of sustainable development issues across many stakeholders is the inevitable lack of impartiality in valuing these issues. Starting from a premise that transparency and fairness of the process are absolute prerequisites for progress, but that consensus is not, an approach has been developed in which all stakeholders are asked to assess the importance of all other stakeholdersÆ priorities, excluding their own. The approach recognises that stakeholders have different levels of contribution, understanding, vested interests, and perceptions of legitimacy and entitlement, across the diversity of sustainable development issues and decision criteria. Using Triangular Value Analysis, the relative weightings of each of the stakeholderÆs priorities are determined through a regression-like technique. The uniqueness of this approach is the manner in which self-assessment bias and overemphasis of stakeholdersÆ own priorities are avoided. The methodology can be used for both internal and external stakeholders, and in conjunction with other group decision making techniques, such as the nominal group or Delphi techniques. This paper will illustrate how Triangular Value Analysis may be applied in the minerals industry to determine priorities in various decisions relating to potentially conflicting sustainable development priorities within the industry.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. Gas dynamic phenomena, particularly instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are problems experienced in gassy, highly stressed coal, both usually the result of depth. Diff- erent mining geometries present different opportunities for seam gas to escape, starting from the virgin condition unaffected by mining and ending with the mining of the coal. The mining of the coal varies from entering a virgin seam cross-measure, heading out into virgin seam, advancing longwall faces into virgin seam and extracting developed blocks from large longwall retreating blocks to small pillars. Each method has its particular gass- iness patterns and particular stress patterns, both changing to some extent with time, and changing as mining progresses. Geological structural anomalies are the cause of gas and stress anomalies, causing in turn greater gas and stress manifestations. Pre-drainage of gas from the working seam not only degasifies the coal but causes it to shrink and so may affect stress as well as gas patterns. Unfortunately prior degasification is not all benefit, and there are some d13- advantages to its use. Also although it is possible to degasify places ahead, gassiness will return if drainage holes are shut down or sealed up and other deleterious aspects may be induced. Research should continue into the problem of instantaneous outbursts of coal and Gas.

This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

In 2014, Arrium completed an optimisation program on its magnetite concentrator, enabling a reduction in the overall cost base of producing concentrate through an increased ability to treat a wider range of ore types, previously considered waste. The development was the culmination of four years of work, conducted in house by Arrium’s mining development group. The overall intent of the plant design focused on improving the concentrator’s ability to treat a wider range of magnetite ore types. Metallurgical analysis of these feed ore groups outlined a need for more grinding power if production quality was to be maintained and throughput increased. As such, a tertiary grinding circuit was designed which, alongside the rectification of key operational bottlenecks, would allow the plant to continue to produce concentrate at the required specification and rate. The technology chosen for the tertiary grinding application was the XT IsaMillTM, which is known for efficient fine grinding when compared to conventional ball milling. The transfer sizes between the existing comminution circuits were coarsened, allowed for the treatment of different ores at the required rates. The optimisation project was successfully completed in February 2014 after a three month commissioning phase. "Various approaches are used in the industry for establishing procedures (sample mass estimation and method of subsampling) for sampling and analysis of gold ores. The key factors that determine the accuracy of the results that can be expected for a given set of procedures are widely misunderstood.Recent developments in sampling theory show that the estimation of the accuracy that can be expected for a given gold ore as a function of sample mass is actually a simple matter. For a given sample mass, the accuracy that will be achieved depends only on the grade of the ore and the range of masses of the grains of the gold in the ore. This, of course, demands that a reasonable estimate of the distribution or spread of gold grain masses in the ore be known. But this is something that should be known if the gold is to be efficiently recovered in the processing plant.This paper provides a simple explanation of the real facts about sampling of gold, either in the field or in the plant, and provides results for a number of cases of combinations of fine and coarse gold in an ore. The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

Diamonds occur in N.S.W., Victoria and north west Tasmania. Diamonds from different areas appear to have their own characteristics, lending weight to the suggestion that three or four different sources (different in location and age) have produced the diamonds found in alluvials at quite a number of locations in Eastern Australia. Explorers for kimberlites in Victoria must overcome a number of field difficulties. The writer's approach attempted to find exploration targets by literature search, noting unusual garnet occurrences, and by relating records of diamond occurrences to described mining activity. While the records are biased towards gold, the study did lead to a pipe, located well away from known diamond-bearing alluvials. Core from one test hole has shown this intrusive to include an alkaline ultramafic breccia with many kimberlitic affinities - a breccia containing mantle-derived minerals, but not a true kimberlite. (A detailed rock description is appended to this paper, but is not the purpose of the paper.) This result enhances the possibility that kimberlites may occur in Victoria, on or near large scale faults or grabens. The depth of fracture penetration may have been different

In late 2014 the Flinders Power Management Team was executing business improvement plans to ensure continued electricity generation until 2028 and beyond. Six months later, in June 2015, the Board announced the closure of the Flinders Power South Australian business, including the Leigh Creek Coal Mine, the Northern and Playford Power Stations located at Port Augusta and the 250km railway line. The announcement was preceded by a brief period of internal planning. A date was soon set for ceasing coal mining operations, being November 2015. The mine is unique in many ways. Located approximately 550km north of Adelaide the site has over 100 years of history and was formerly operated by the South Australian Government. Privatisation in 2000 saw the mine continue operation under Perpetual Leases from the South Australian Government. The leases included exemptions from multiple sections of the Mining Act 1971, obliging primary regulation under the Mines and Works Inspection Act 1920. The coal, being a low rank sub-bituminous brown coal, is prone to self-heating and spontaneous combustion. The mine and company town Leigh Creek were the economic and cultural heartbeat of the community. Facilities at the mine were shared by the community and vice versa. While many mines across Australia and the world enter periods of care and maintenance, few have been actively closed to the point of relinquishment (Bennett and Lacy, 2016). A swift decision to close, followed by a short mining operations shutdown period, presented significant technical and regulatory challenges for both the mine operator and for Regulators. The subsequent joint risk mapping process employed by Flinders Power and South Australian Mining Regulators was a unique real-world example of collaborative mine closure planning and execution. Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

This paper shows an economic feasible approach to implement greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry (MMI). The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions in the MMI. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be designed and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using the best available technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified gaps will be reported and the potential GHG emission reductions will be put into relation to the investment, running cost and generated carbon credits of the new process technologies to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap decision-making for implementing new technology into the companyÆs business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using the marginal abatement curve approach.

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

High-grade iron ore may be derived from banded iron formation (BIF) through four fundamentally different processes:1. syngenetic precipitation of chert free BIF,2. residual enrichment by removal of gangue minerals from BIF to form bedded (residual) ironore,3. mechanical erosion of iron oxide and chert from bedded iron ore or BIF and re-deposition andupgrading as detrital iron ore, and4. chemical removal of iron from BIF and precipitation elsewhere as a secondary (channel) irondeposit.Finally, the BIF itself may constitute iron ore if a high-grade concentrate utilised for pellets or sinters can be derived from it through mechanical (industrial) separation of iron oxide by means of crushing/milling and mineral separation.Historically, exploration for high-grade BIF hosted iron ores was focused on the residual (bedded) deposits and driven by supergene concepts. Exploration for detrital and channel type iron ores was mostly secondary to exploration for bedded deposits, but recently, a more focused exploration effort has led to the discovery of enormous moderate to low iron grade deposits in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Exploration for high-grade iron ores using syngenetic concepts has been limited,but together with exploration using hypogene concepts offers the best hope of fi nding concealed deposits. Exploration for BIF sources suitable for concentrate ores commenced in the ‘old’ iron ore provinces after the high-grade resources were depleted and has only recently gained importance in Australian BIF provinces, mainly as a result of high iron ore prices in the last decade.

In the last 50 years there have been tremendous improvements in equipment used in development on underground mines. Compressed air powered jacklegs have been replaced by high powered electro-hydraulic drifters on sophisticated drill jumbos and load haul dump units have taken over from small shovels and rail cars.Despite the increase in power applied in key parts of the development cycle, average advance rates have fallen and costs have increased. The factor that is most often regarded as the main contributor to slowing advance rates is increased support requirements. Whilst there is no denying that the drive to improve safety has resulted in the requirement for more bolting and the installation of a skin support (mesh or shotcrete), this is not the only factor.Within the industry as a whole, many of the basic principles of development appear to have been lost over time. This paper looks at a historical case study and discusses some of the features of old development cycles that are no longer in use. This highlights some of the basics that appear to have been forgotten. These may be indicators to what may provide improvements in the conventional drill and blast development cycle.CITATION:Ross, I T, 2014.
