Reliable particle size analysis in minerals processing plants is a critical factor to the economic return of a plant. As recovery of valuable minerals is compromised for particles outside the optimal size range, effective and reliable particle size analysis is more crucial than ever, particularly in the current upswing of the global commodities market. Inefficient particle size analysis can lead to excessive over-grinding, thereby significantly increasing energy consumption and reagent costs, whilst negatively affecting process operation, thickening capacity, water recovery and tailings disposal.Australia’s first installation of a particle size analyser in Iron Ore has been monitored with great interest by the industry. Previously, manual size sampling at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo fines processing plant involved off-site sample analysis, with a turnaround measured in days. The Outotec PSI® 500 particle size indicator, commissioned in July 2009, takes approximately three minutes per line at site.The paper will include details on the following:• plant description,• sampling design,• PSI® 500 analyser functionality description, and• key learnings from site.

This paper describes the test work, process design, commissioning and operation of a processing system at the Ergo gold operation that improves the extraction efficiency from gold tailings material. The improvement in recovery is derived from the separation of the gold contained within the sulfides of the tailings material and a dedicated process stream to recover that gold.The sulfides are separated by means of a flotation circuit and that resulting concentrate is subjected to a regrind of below 20 ¦m to enable a greater liberation of the gold. The ultra-fine material is then subjected to a dedicated leach circuit to recover the now exposed gold particles.The case study is an example of the challenges of introducing new technology and methodologies to a well-established operation and thereby attaining improved efficiencies and tangible business benefits.CITATION:Ebell, M B and Capstick, D, 2013. As mining companies have to go deeper in search of ore and coal, the importance of protecting the highwall increases. Wall fatigue also increases with importance of the long life expectancy of a highwall, in particular the impact of fatigue influenced by resonance. Resonance is the tendency of a material to oscillate with greater amplitude at certain frequencies when exposed to a periodic force. Until recently, only dominant frequencies, either natural or induced, were all that could be measured through the fast Fourier transform of the blast-induced wave form.This paper presents a novel method to accurately predict the resonant frequency of a highwall. In fact, the method can predict the natural frequencies between any two monitoring points placed in line with the source of impact, and as such it can be used to determine the resonant frequencies of any physical object. The method not only predicts the resonant frequencies of the material; it predicts the structural response of the total frequency spectrum. This method helps describe the response of a mechanical structure to excitation. It describes the structure’s efficiency in the use of energy, that is, whether energy is dampened or consumed in resonance.The initial predictions have been so accurate that it made it possible to determine the fundamental frequency and the first six harmonics of a highwall in a northern Queensland coalmine. With the use of electronic detonators, the blast can be timed with a repeating delay to create an induced artificial frequency that has been determined to retain the least amount of energy.CITATION:Osterman, R, 2015. "In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

Leightons is the sole contractor at the Wahana Coal Mine Project (part of the Bayan Group), a multi-seam thermal deposit consisting of 13 coal seams with thicknesses ranging from 20 cm to 500 cm. The average dip of the deposit is 18 - 20°. However the deposit is heavily faulted in certain domains with anticlinal and synclinal structures present causing seams to dip up to 90°. Average thickness of coal inter-burdens range from less than 2 to 12 m. The minimum coal thickness being mined is 20 cm. Coal production is direct mine mouth feed and there is no coal processing plant currently used.Conventional blasting between the highly variable coal horizons in the early phases of the mine life was suboptimal from a production perspective. Drilling short holes with a reduced drill pattern, and on occasions with sloping benches, resulted in low drilling and explosives loading efficiency.A high frequency of small size blasts fired up to two times daily was required with each blast consisting of four up to five small blast areas. Each blast averaged approximately 36 000 bcm thus causing a low utilisation rate of the mining fleet from frequent blast delays and the inability to deploy larger Liebherr 9350 excavators on bench. It was identified that increasing the production targets required a more efficient drilling and blasting process. Furthermore, due to the highly variable nature of the deposit, the existing coal model was determined to not be able to accurately predict the coal seam location prior to blasthole drilling.In August 2009, Leighton Contractors Indonesia and Orica Mining Services with the full support of the Wahana team, initiated through seam blasting trials using electronic blasting systems. Further trials were conducted in November 2009. Trial evaluations indicated that the benefits from decreased lost time events due to blasting, an increased vertical advance rate per blast, and increased overall blast size could be attained while not damaging or diluting coal.Full-scale?through seam blasting has been ongoing since February 2010 for the upper eight coal seams to extract coal seam thicknesses ranging from 20 - 100 cm. This paper will discuss the parameters of the through seam blasting process in Wahana and the resulting benefits to the overall mine production.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified low factor-of-safety due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the low factor-of-safety area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model. Electronic detonators and blast initiation systems were combined with advanced blast vibration modelling software to produce optimal timing sequences with predictable vibration outcomes. Although minimising vibration was the primary focus, blasting induced frequency was also a concern for the project team and therefore initiation sequencing was optimised to also avoid undesirable frequencies. Minor variations in ground factors (vibration transmission and attenuation) were noted, and therefore justified the inclusion of regular signature holes which allowed continual vibration model updates. Blasting results produced vibration and frequency measurements within allowable limits and closely resembled the predictive model. These positive results were achievable through the combination of electronic detonators, advanced modelling software and good onsite practices by engineering and on-bench teams alike. This project will remain ongoing as the pit progresses to deeper benches, and therefore the same methodology will be applied; quality and continual data collection, the use of electronic detonators, and optimisation via advanced vibration and frequency modelling software. Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) owns and manages the Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) located outside Orange in the state of New South Wales. RGM is a new underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is ramping up production to 4 Mtpa. The success of the SLC method at RGM is strongly influenced by production drill and blast practices. Distinguishing features of the Ridgeway SLC operation include choke blasting against broken rock, drawpoint brow preservation, loading of blastholes with different in-hole bulk emulsion densities, precharging of production rings and routine drawpoint fragmentation assessment. These areas are described in the context of RGMÆs required blasting objectives, production drilling and charging activities and innovative practices.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a large copper and gold mining operation near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. This is a remote location with its own set of unique operational characteristics. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce a concentrate containing 2500 tpd of copper and 6000 oz of gold per day from the combined mining of a 45 000 tpd (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 190 000 tpd (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open Pit mine will be exhausted in 2015 at which time FreeportÆs operations will entirely underground mining methods. The Common Infrastructure Project (CIP) incorporates the elements required for the shift to underground mining at a production rate approaching 200 000 tpd. The AB Adit portion of the CIP will provide deep level access to the Grasberg Block Cave (below the Open Pit), Kucing Liar, Big Gossan, and the Mill Level Zone orebodies. Commencement of the project was September 2003. The Grasberg Block Cave is planned to start production in 2014. This paper provides details on the project scope, innovative contractual framework, advancement of mining methods throughout the life of the operation, equipment selection, manpower selection, training, geological, and socio-political conditions related to the project.

Many flotation plants use pH to adjust the pulp chemistry of their system to achieve optimum separation. For example, in a sequential lead/zinc circuit the pH during sphalerite flotation is increased to 10.5 or greater to depress galena and pyrite, thereby improving selectivity for sphalerite. However, maintaining a pulp at a particular pH value does not necessarily provide the operator with an abundance of information regarding the chemistry changes occurring within a plant. This paper provides the reader with a number of pulp chemical observations in several plants, showing that the same trends are noted over time; however, the magnitude of the measured values do change. Further, the changes in magnitude are invariably associated with a change in mineralogy. Thus, is measuring pH enough? Can the Eh, dissolved oxygen and temperature be measured at the industrial scale reliably? And, are these measurements useful?

The reverse cationic flotation using the starch as depressor of iron oxides is the most efficient upgrading process when is applied to the simple systems composed by hematite/magnetite and quartz. The fundamental studies performed with iron ore samples from different deposits over the world (Brazil, Russia, Mexico) confirmed the inefficiency of starch when the silica content in the concentrate is controlled by Fe/Mg-bearing minerals. The main approaches for solving these issues focused on using new collector formulations or new depressants. However, the alternative depressants tested inhibited flotation of quartz or were less efficient as iron oxide depressant. In this work, a comparison between new amidoamine collector with conventionally used etheramine and oleate collectors in the flotation of pure minerals and actual iron ore samples was performed. The electrophoretic mobility, contact angle and infrared spectroscopy measurements allowed to deduce the hindrance effect as main mechanism of selective adsorption of the amidoamine on the quartz surface compared to hematite and kaolinite. Molecular modelling studies revealed that this steric hindrance effect can be explained by the combination of the "shield" formed by the coordinating water molecules on the (001)-D2 hematite surface and the large volume of the amidoamine head group. The amidoamine tested as collector without use of a depressant showed excellent flotation selectivity allowing the total flotation of quartz from a mixture with hematite. High collector performance and selectivity were confirmed during reverse flotation of quartz using continuous flotation column (D = 500 mm; H = 4000 mm) and allowed to produce the iron concentrates with more than 60 per cent of iron from the rejected slimes samples of Vargem Grande 2 processing plant (Iron Quadrangle, MG, Brazil). The new collector allowed to develop flexible flotation flow sheets to process the iron ore with a complex gangue mineralogy and unlock the old altered tailings and slimes product as new resources

Three legacy coalbed methane production wells have been converted to injection wells for a one-year carbon dioxide (CO2) injection test to evaluate the potential for CO2 storage in the coal reservoir and the potential for enhanced gas production at offset wells. The injection reservoir is composed of 15–20 individual coal seams with an average thickness of 30 cm (1.0 ft), spanning a depth range of approximately 240 (800 ft) to 670 m (2200 ft).The monitoring program for this test includes gas and water sampling of the three injection wells, three dedicated monitoring wells and approximately 20 offset production wells. Key technologies used for monitoring the study area include time-lapse GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) acquisitions for surface deformation measurement, a 28-station buried passive microseismic monitoring array, real-time downhole pressure and temperature sensing and perfluorocarbon tracer fluids, which will be injected with the CO2 stream. The schedule for the monitoring program includes pre- (baseline), during- and post-injection data collection. This schedule will allow data to be analysed for time-lapse changes and trends, which are important for understanding the migration of gas and fluid phases in the reservoir – including CO2, methane, other hydrocarbons and water – and for observing the changing distributions of reservoir pressures and stresses.The results of the monitoring efforts for this study have implications for monitoring mining operations. The combined use of GPS and InSAR geospatial data to evaluate elevation changes across and beyond the study area may prove to be an accurate option for measuring surface deformation, including mining-induced subsidence, in unstable terrain. Long-term microseismic monitoring using high-sensitivity instruments has several applications in mining operations, including rock stability monitoring, production monitoring and miner location detection during emergencies. Sunrise Dam Gold Mine is a large open pit mine 730 km NE of Perth, Western Australia. Contract mining commenced in the open pit in September 1996 in lake clays and saprolites with the first fresh rock mined late 1999, and the underground starting the first decline in October 2003. By May 2007, over 150 million cubic metres of material had been mined and the pit was 360 m deep with 80 m remaining before reaching the planned final depth in early 2008. A final cut-back in the northwest will commence in late 2007 with open pit mining in the Mega Pit expected to conclude in late 2010. The challenges of developing the pit can be divided into three phases:Soft materials û mining was in multiple staged pits and cut-backs in lake clays, saprolites, weathered material. The varying characteristics had a significant impact on mining methods and slope stability. Structural û mining was gradually exposing more fresh rock and the drive was to understand how major structures and lithological contacts impact on local and large-scale stability. This had a significant influence on mine design and scheduling. Slope angles û achieving the final slope angle is critical. This is done through application of high standards of final wall establishment and proactive geotechnical hazard identification and management. This includes dealing with the rapid rate of descent, interaction with underground excavations and managing rock fall risk. The paper discusses each of these phases, highlighting the geotechnical controls implemented to date, looking at their success and impact on mining.

Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. In recent years, there has had a greater recurrence of studies and projects that consider tailings filtration followed by dry stacking to reduce the consumption of fresh water, the space required for disposal, and, eventually, to reduce the costs of the project. In addition, this technique could be required to meet new environmental restrictions to extend the life-of-mine of existing plants or to enable the development of new projects, especially in areas of high social interest. This article is intended to describe the most relevant technical aspects of the design and implementation of an iron ore tailings filtering system and its final overland disposal as well as physical and metallurgical surveys, and laboratory and pilot testing. Furthermore, it is presented how these activities are inserted in the project development to rationalise the resources. The case under study considers an iron mineral wet magnetic concentration processing plant. The outcome tailings are dewatered by means of thickeners, where the overflow water is recycled back to the plant. The underflow slurry is pumped into intermediate storage tanks before proceeding with further dewatering and final disposal. The project consists of a tailings filtration plant, belt conveying systems, a temporary stockpiling system, trucking loading and transportation system, moisture-conditioning facilities (spreading and airing), and final disposal facilities (compacting). Due to the stickiness of the filtered tailings that governs the belt conveying system design, the operating moisture range must be established. Besides, proper technical aspects such as planning, executing, and analysing both the laboratory and the pilot testing data to validate process design parameters; selecting filters; defining spare filtering capacity; handling the out-of-range filtrated moisture; sizing the belt conveying system; configuring the equipment involved, must be considered.

Low-loaders or 'floats' for relocating equipment in surface mines are limited to a capacity of approximately 350 t. In the iron ore industry it is desirable to be able to rapidly relocate excavators in order to maintain production rates within appropriate quality limits. In addition, the ability to rapidly relocate heavy equipment raises the possibility of improving the quality of repairs by performing maintenance in controlled shop conditions. However, many iron ore operations operate hydraulic excavators in the 600 to 800 t range, with newly released excavator models exceeding 800 t. These excavators are too large to float using conventional technology. This paper examines the potential for using multi-bogie transporters to relocate large hydraulic excavators in surface mines. Recent innovations have seen the development of modular transporters which can be coupled together to achieve larger platform areas. When separated, and with their drive bogies neutralised, these units are able to be towed behind prime movers and relocated between mines via public roads. The potential cost savings for relocating a Terex RH170 excavator in an open pit coal mine are examined. In the first six months of 2008, the analysis showed the potential for a 38 per cent reduction in total travel time with a corresponding revenue increase of approximately $350 k. The paper recommends that a feasibility study be conducted into offering a heavy equipment relocation service within the Pilbara region.

Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. The application of the new tool into a real case project in this paper shows that it can determine economically and environmentally optimised waste rock dump schedules in an acceptable time frame.CITATION:Fu, Z, Li, Y, Topal, E and Williams, D J, 2015.
