Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra Leone Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by a few companies since the 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Marampa tailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented first with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includes the development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magnetic separation flow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite) material. The flow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flow sheet configuration, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.

Multielement reconnaissance geochemistry coupled with ground scintillation gamma ray measurements has been used to investigate the dispersion patterns of uranium and other major and trace elements in the arid Palmyrides region of central Syria. This region occupies an interplatform depression in the northern part of the Arabia Plate, upon which sediments up to 10 km thick have accumulated. Outcrops of strongly fractured Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks form two major mountain belts, the northern and southern Palmyrides, between which is located the closed Ad-Daww basin, with a thick Neogene and Quaternary clastic cover. Among the various lithologies, phosphorites are well represented. Uranium and associated elements have been incorporated into the Upper Cretaceous and Lower Palaeogene sediments, especially the phosphorites, which are well represented in the region. These elements are derived from three possible sources, namely, sea water, Lower Cretaceous volcanism and metalliferous fluids leaking along taphrogenic lineaments. In and around the phosphorites, numerous traces of secondary uranium mineralization occur. Over 500 geochemical samples of outcropping rock, wadi and playa sediments, overburden and groundwaters were taken over an area of approximately 9000 sq km. Most samples were analyzed for 25 major and trace elements by nebulization ICPAES; for As, Sb, Bi and Se by hydride generation and ICPAES; and for U, Th and La and other REE by neutron activation analysis.

In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? "Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. This paper discusses the processes of planning a new operation, with particular emphasis on block caving and its Northparkes adaptation. As well as applying advanced technologies, here also is the opportunity to develop the art and science of block caving for its application to a wider range of geotechnical conditions than previously Envisaged.

The rationale for the design of the Emergency Egress (escape andentrapment) strategy for one underground metal mine has beenpreviously described (Brake, 1999). Two of the key conclusionsfor this mine, which is equipped with 30 minute oxygen-generating self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR), were the need to ensure no person is ever more than 750 m from an emergency refuge station (ERS) and that it could take up to eight hours to rescue workers from undergroundå. These conclusions were based on a number of considerations including the non-availability of a credible, æpersonalÆ entrapment procedure at the workplace, the duration of self-contained self-rescuers when used for travel, the need for rapid æclearingÆ of mine personnel to effectively and safely target mine search and rescue resources and the maximum time to either put a fire out, or to rescue affected personnel. As there is no Australian standard for refuge stationsç (or for self-rescuers), this paper follows with guidelines for the location and specification of both fixed (permanent) and relocatable Emergency Refuge Stations (ERSs) that may be applicable to other underground Australian metal mines.

It is widely accepted that mineral deposits are decreasing in metal grades. To remain profitable and meet market demand, mining companies are expanding their operations by increasing the tonnage treated. These expansions may include new concentrators with higher nameplate tonnages or upgrading the capacity of existing ‘brownfield’ operations. In many cases, the brownfield upgrade route is preferred as it is less capital intensive; however, brownfield upgrades are never straightforward and present many metallurgical and engineering challenges.For example, to increase feed throughput at a brownfield site, there will be a requirement to modify the mine development plan. This may result in the ore mineralogy varying beyond the current feed fluctuation range. To accommodate these ore variations, a combination of mineralogical analysis and small scale testwork can be used to develop a new process flow sheet to achieve the product recovery/concentrate grade requirements. In general, however, flow sheet development does not usually consider site specific layout constraints and equipment requirements. At sites where future expansions were never considered, taking this silo approach could lead to project delays and compromise the circuit design.Engaging an experienced technology partner ensures the nominated project team is involved throughout all stages and aspects of a given brownfield upgrade – from conceptual flow sheet development, through to detailed engineering, construction and commissioning. The recent Carmen Copper Corporation (Carmen Copper) circuit upgrade has been completed in technology partnership with Outotec. The circuit upgrade was extensive and included new equipment additions to the comminution, flotation and dewatering circuits. Carmen Copper’s intimate knowledge of the ore characteristics, in conjunction with a trusted, knowledgeable technology partner, facilitated a robust circuit design, and fast-tracked the project execution. Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. Increasingly over the past couple of decades, the importance of understanding the in situ stress regime in underground hard rock mines has become accepted by all. Providers have responded to this requirement and various techniques for undertaking the measurements have been honed while others have slipped from use. It is a simple, though not inexpensive task to engage a provider to undertake the require measurements, and a comprehensive report will ensue. So, what has actually been obtained? What should the geotechnical engineer do next? What tools are necessary to do so? Regardless of the method of measurement, the report will describe the location of the measurement site and describe the basis of the methodology used in undertaking the measurements and a log of the measurement program. Finally, it will include the results, which should incorporate the normal and shear stress components of the full stress tensor. Ground control management plans (GCMP’s) and stress summary reports and spreadsheets prepared by site geotechnical engineers always include the magnitude, trend and plunge of the principal stresses. Remarkably few site-based summaries include the full stress tensor. This is a significant gap as the full stress tensor is vital for any further data manipulation. However, without the algebraic tools to undertake those manipulations, their value is diminished. This paper seeks to provide a checklist of ideas to be considered. It provides commentary on the options available to dissect the stress measurement report and ensure that the maximum possible value is derived from it. The manipulation and presentation of component stress data is also discussed. The various methods of stress measurement are not the focus of the paper but some of the strengths and weaknesses of them over which the site geotechnical engineer has some control, are highlighted.

Prior to 1972, Peko Mines Limited at Tennant Creek used a central mill at Peko, which consisted of a gravity circuit, flotation and cyanidation of tailings, to treat their gold ore from surrounding mines. The Warrego concentrator, 60km to the west, was built to handle the Warrego and Gecko copper orebodies, which were being developed concurrently with the concentrator construction The Warrego concentrator consisted of a flotation circuit, using autogenous grinding at 100 - 120 tph, compared to the more elaborate Peko circuit employing rod mill - ball mill grinding capable of treating only 18 - 26 tph. During development of the Warrego copper mine a gold rich ore pod was located, because of which the mining plans were adjusted to allow simultaneous, separate extraction of the copper and gold ores. However, the plans for the concentrator were not affected as the gold ore could be carted 60km to the Peko central mill for processing.

Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong. The minerals industry focus over much of the past twenty years has been on cost reduction and production growth supported, but not driven, by technology improvements. Mergers and acquisitions, and the demands of financial markets, have been high priority items whereas research and development and technology based innovation have received less attention and have been cut back in many companies. Technology improvements will be critical if the industry is to make progress on the stated aims of improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage and maximising recovery from deposits. They will also be important for improving capital efficiency and in treating difficult deposits. However the role technology based innovation will play both in the overall industry, and within individual companies, during the next decade is quite uncertain. There are major challenges in progressing technology based innovation in an industry with limited technical resources which is dominated by long life high capital operations. Specific opportunities for energy and productivity improvements exist but face significant technical and structural barriers that need to be overcome if the industry is to significantly improve performance. Current evidence suggests that changes in approach will be needed for these improvements to be realised. Recent studies in the United States and Canada have highlighted the wide range of energy performance across the industry and the scope for marked improvement from both incremental improvements and increased research and development. Comminution, material transportation and underground mine ventilation were identified as high priority areas. Opportunities within these areas are discussed both in respect of specific technologies and in how they may change performance. The role of open innovation as a source of new technology is also discussed. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

This is the first of two papers concerned with rock stress inputs to various mine design issues at the large Ok Tedi open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. The companion paper (also published at this conference) is ‘The Application of Rock Stress Inputs to Stability Assessments at Ok Tedi Mine, Papua New Guinea’ (de Bruyn et al, 2014).Stresses are a required input for numerical modelling of mine design issues. However, for some operations, like the very large Ok Tedi open pit mine in remote rugged mountainous terrain, direct and representative measurement of rock stresses can be technically difficult and expensive. In such situations, development of an appropriate and sufficient understanding of rock stresses can be challenging.This was addressed for Ok Tedi by considering the following:The tectonic and regional geologic setting of the mine.Results from three different programs of rock stress measurement over 19 years, including hydraulic fracturing (1991), acoustic emission (2007) and overcoring (2010). Some interesting results of the overcoring work are discussed. An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal dust monitor (PDM) that gives real-time respirable dust readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the minerÆs cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically-based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the United States (US). The monitor has particular application for determining location of high dust sources. It can evaluate the efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to reducing dust levels. It has been recognised that the PDMÆs unique measurement approach has application to allow real-time atmospheric diesel particulate matter (DPM) monitoring. The industry has no real-time atmospheric DPM monitor at present. Recent surveys in New South Wales and Queensland show significant numbers of miners continue to face full shift DPM exposures in excess of internationally accepted levels. Real-time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pinpoint high exposure zones where a number of trucks and other vehicles work in areas of poor ventilation. Knowledge of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground minersÆ exposure. Approaches to uses of the DPM form of the monitor and the design of tag boards are discussed. Some outcomes from mine tests with both these new instruments are given.

"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context.
