NEVER before have the annual company reports in the mineral industry field exhibited the typo-graphical art so abundantly as does the current crop. Time was when most company reports made a drab appearance and dry reading, mostly confined to financial data and text that gave little information to the public or technical men. Now, the dollar statistics assume less importance. Considerable information is given on what is going on at the company's plants, new equipment being installed, new methods, properties under development, ore reserves and grades, and similar information of interest to professional men working in the field. We have one suggestion for further improvement: The names of the officers and directors of the company are always given, but only a few companies give the names of the principal operating officials. We think, in the case of a mine for example, that the name of the general manager, his assistant, the mine and mill superintendents, and any other top operating officials who have been largely responsible for the success of operations, are worthy of mention. The reports are now widely read and this recognition is due them. Conspicuous among the annual reports that we happen to have seen, in point of typographical attractiveness, are that of the Texas Co., celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a gold-plated cover and gold printing inside; and that of Noranda Mines Ltd., with a red and black cover that would attract attention anywhere. Comment on economics, taxes, and labor give an excellent picture of what our industry is facing. Consider the following, from the report of the Union Oil Co. of California:

For the first time in its history the Institute will hold a meeting in the State of Arizona. A few years ago Arizona stood third in the copper-producing districts of the United States. Since that time, with the development of porphyry mines, the output has gone up with great rapidity until it not only is the leading district, but its output at the present time is at the rate of nearly double the Montana output, which now stands second in the list. In connection with this .development, most interesting departures have been made in methods -of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will' appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity will be afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest .to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including 'the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona. The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. At this moment in the history of the world, the all- pervading and universally most important fact is that the world population is beginning to outgrow its food supply, and the United States has suddenly lost its ability to give away huge food surplus to any nation in the world with a food shortage problem. This, of course, means that, all of a sudden, our government must completely reverse its former bureaucratic stance regarding crop controls and agricultural price supports, to out-right incentives to increase farm production and bring more idle land into food-growing use.

In looking into the crystal-ball scene of minerals beneficiation for 1970 and beyond, an impartial observer becomes con- fused as to what has been done and what is possible in the way of improvements. The mining official must balance the burden which is being shouldered by the mineral industry for maintaining our environment in its pristine state on one hand, with the solid advancements made in technology and cost savings on the other hand. Then the official wonders if this is really the criterion for judging overall performance today. As a prospective engineer, Dave Bolles sees it this way: "Specialization has caused many engineers to subordinate everything to doing their job the cheapest and fastest way. In the future this won't be enough. The engineer in the mineral industry will be responsible not only for mining, concentrating and smelting, but also for the resultant wastes- the mine dumps, the tailing dams and the slag piles." The history of the development of gold metallurgy in South Africa is divisible into two periods: That preceding the introduction of the cyanide process on a commercial scale in 1890; and the 24 years intervening between that important event and the present time. The period between the discovery of the banket reefs of the Witwaters-rand and the year 1890 was one of phenomenally rapid progress in mining development, but of no special interest to the metallurgist, There were no strikingly original or distinctly local advances in the treatment of gold ores. Californian practice in stamp milling and amalgamation prevailed, in mills ranging in equipment between 5 and 50 stamps, operating within a wide range of efficiency, and under the trying conditions usually encountered in a new and isolated field. The somewhat incomplete records of gold output of that period show that in December, 1887, there were 20 producing companies in the Witwatersrand district, of which 10 had mills, the largest being of 20 stamps. The only official record of returns for May, 1887, was that of the Wemmer mine, whose modest achievement with a 5-stamp mill was 100 tons crushed, producing 887 oz. 3 dwt. of gold. This is interesting in view of the present-day output of this field, which in 1913 reached 8,430,998 oz. The rapid increase of production during this first period (May, 1887, to January 1891) is shown by the following summary for the year 1890:1 Total tone crushed.................................. 702,828 Number of stamps in operation....................... 1,046 Average number of tons crushed per stamp per day..... 2.36 Yield of gold, ounces................................ 494,817 Yield per ton, pennyweights.......................... 13.36 The stamp duty ranged between 11/2 and 4 tons per day, according to weight of stamp, fineness of screen, and operating skill available. The prevailing weight of stamp was about 900 lb., and the screen, 900 meshes to the square inch.

The Hawkesworth detachable drill steel shank and bit were invented by A. L. Hawkesworth, while he was a mechanical foreman for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Butte, Mont. Mr. Hawkesworth died on June 16, 1925, at the time that his invention was practically a proved success. The first application for patents was made by him in November, 1918, and the bit is now being manufactured under patents issued in 1922 and 1923. The credit for its development in the early stages belongs to A. L. Hawkesworth, Roy S. Alley, Harry A. Gallwey, E. J. Bowman and various officials of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Later improvements, manufacturing problems and the direct usage in the mines were originated and perfected by the mechanical department under C. D. Woodward, E. R. Borcherdt, head of the Rock Drill Equipment Department, Robert E. Kelly of the Mechanical Department, and various operating department heads of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of these officials in the preparation of this paper. Comparison of Costs Using Regular Drill Steel and Detachable Drill Steel In 1922 production was satisfactory and sufficient enough to warrant a complete installation in an operating mine. The study and tests were made at the Badger State mine, the production of which averaged 1200 tons of ore per day. E. R. Borcherdt, head of the rock drill equipment department, was in direct charge of the trials, installation, operating problems and records during the entire .period, arid still continues in that position. This mine is a typical Butte mine, operated through a standard four-compartment shaft, served by a double drum hoist and an auxiliary hoist. In the Philippines, where distances are spoken of in terms off fight time, the Sipalay copper mines are two flight hours southeast of Manila on the island of Negros. After landing at the airport in Bacolod, it is then 170 km (106 milers) by surface transportation to Marinduque Mining and Industrial Corp.'s expanding copper operation. While copper deposits were discovered in the area in 1936-and one mine, the Binulig, began operations soon after-it wasn't until 1956 that stripping at Sipalay and construction of a 4000-t/d (4400-stpd) mill began. The mill went into operation in May 1957, and the first shipment of copper concentrate was made three months later.

AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

ON the morning of Monday, Nov. 9, 1936, two motorcycles, with sirens screeching, - escorted a procession of 70 automobiles from the Colonia Railway Station in Mexico City to the Hotel Geneve. Riding in' the cars were just over 200 visitors- members of the A.I.M.E. and their guests. They had come, via St. Louis, in two special trains from 24 different states for the 146th General Meeting of the Institute. During the morning they and 200 others, who had come from the United States by automobile or from various cities and mining camps in Mexico, duly registered with !efficient Mme. The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corp. operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, WV. Since start-up of the Van plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miners' vacation, the original system - which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor - was replaced by an installation using two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance.

MOST students that plan to enter the mining profession attempt to obtain some kind of practical experience before graduation. Six or seven years ago it was an easy matter for undergraduates to find employment during the summer vacation and return to school in the fall filled with enthusiasm to dig deeper into the theoretical field. However, during the past few years it has become extremely difficult for an inexperienced undergraduate to obtain even a menial job in mining. This was the situation which presented itself to the author and his partner, T. M. Patten several months before school closed in May, 1934. At that time, Mr. Patten's training consisted of two years study in Mining, and mine included three years' study in Mining Geology at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. With this technical training and no practical experience, we conceived the idea that custom assaying in some of the western mining districts should be a lucrative business. We thought that the renewed interest in prospecting for gold and the opening of new mines should provide more assay work, and believed that we might secure it if we were on the spot where the assaying was needed. We realized that it would be out of the question for us to obtain the necessary equipment with which to establish an assay office. Even if such an office were established we had a maximum of but three months during which to operate. So we determined to build some kind of inexpensive equipment that could be placed in an automobile, or trailer, and be moved from one camp to another. We then began to study the theoretical aspects of assaying and started experimental work with the equipment that we proposed to build.

IN 1945, Illinois produced 75,210,000 bid. of oil, or 4.4 percent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production for the third consecutive year. Production decreased about 3 per cent from that of 1944, when the total Illinois production was 77,413,000 bbl. This is the smallest percentage of decrease in production in the state for any year since a peak was reached in 1940. Daily average production for 1945 was approximately 206,000 bbl. INTRODUCTION. THE predominating value of the ores now being treated by the Palmarejo and Mexican Gold Fields, Ltd., is silver, although some gold is also carried. The present method of treatment consists of wet-crushing and concentrating, followed by the cyanidation of the unroasted sands and slimes. The sands are treated by leaching and the so-called accumulated slimes by a system of agitation and decantation. It is only within very recent years that the cyanidation of unroasted silver-ores has been commercially successful. In fact, at the time operations were begun at the cyanide-plant at Chinipas, February, 1902, I knew of no other leaching-plant treating similar ores successfully. The cyanide treatment of the Palmarejo ores differs but little from the ordinary practice in cyaniding gold-ores; and perhaps but little, if any, new information concerning the metallurgy of silver is to be gleaned from it. PALMAREJO MINE. The Palmarejo mines are located in the southwestern part of the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, on the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 feet. The mills, 12. miles distant, are situated on the Chinipas river, near the town of Chinipas, which is about 150 miles northeast of Agiabampo, on the Gulf of California. Supplies are shipped via this port as this route is the best and most direct to the property. The ore-bodies in the Palmarejo mines have been deposited. along a series of rock-fractures, caused by an intrusion of eruptive rock. The most important of these fractures or fissures, both in width and value, are the Prieta and Blanca veins, which.

PLANS are now well advanced for the joint meeting of the Institute and over a dozen other engineering societies in Chicago during the week beginning June 26: Engineers' Week at A Century of Progress. All engineers planning to visit the Fair will find it to their advantage to be present at this time so far as the Chicago attractions are concerned, and Eastern members will also have the advantage of special transportation arrangements on June 24 and 25. The tentative program is given at the bottom of the next page. Monday morning, June 26, will be reserved for registration of members and guests and the Woman's Auxiliary at the Stevens Hotel, where special rooms will be provided. A luncheon will also be served there, and in the afternoon, a technical session on nonmetallics. Instead of having the big family dinner that evening at the Stevens, as at first proposed, the local committee has planned to have it at the Fair Grounds, where special facilities have been arranged. A meeting of the Board of Directors and a few invited guests will precede the dinner. All members and guests are likely to be interested in visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, so that will be the sole event on the program for Tuesday morning, June 27. The big attraction there at present is the model coal mine, the first operative coal mine ever built for exhibit purposes. It is based on the Deutsches Museum mine at Munich, but goes far beyond that in realism, and takes the visitor on an extended tour underground. It shows him in half an hour more types of modern mining machinery and coal geology than he would be likely to see in a week's underground study in the coal fields. The Institute members will be the first group to go through this mine.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

The problems confronting the development of Latin America's mineral resources have hinged largely on the political and economic climates-in short, the investment climate--existing and often changing in each nation. .The attractions and risks confronting today's investors in such mineral developments have been described and debated to considerable length during the past two decades, the arguments pro and con colored by the previous experiences incurred by the would-be investor, whether company or individual. In an effort to shed light on the investment climates existing today throughout Central and South America, the Council of Economics brought four experts together at the AIME Annual Meeting last March to give their views on this subject.

THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted.
