Commodity coverage addresses 17 critical and strategic commodities that appear to have commercial production potential in the State. The core of the deposits described is taken from those properties evaluated d under the Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability Program (MAP); additional deposits are included to provide a more complete coverage. Institutional and infrastructural factors affecting mineral development are also discussed.

During the last two decades many research projects were conducted to study the load requirements for the powered supported longwall faces (1-6). Significant results had been achieved by these researches. Most of the previous studies were rarely designed to understand the mechanisms of interaction between the supports and the surrounding rock, or to correlate the stress conditions around longwall faces to the mining operations both in time and space. In case of the shield supported faces, the roof-to-floor convergence is very difficult to measure due to the high percentage of roof coverage. The external load on the supports can not be determined from the leg pressure data alone due to the existence of the lemniscate links. Therefore, there is a real need in that a simple engineering method be developed to monitor the variations of roof load on the shield supports, the roof-to-floor convergence and the roof stress restoration in the gob area as the mining proceeds. Only with the results of these measurements, a further understanding about the mechanisms of interaction between the supports and the surrounding rock can be achieved and a criterion of designing or selecting the optimum mechanical parameters of the shield supports can finally be developed.

INTRODUCTION The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel Scheme is part of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project in Andhra Pradesh, South India. This scheme has been planned since 1983 and will provide irrigation facilities to drought-ridden areas in Andhra Pradesh. Water will be transferred from the Srisailam Reservoir during the monsoon months to 0.3 million acres of farmland and will also provide drinking water to villages en-route. The paper will address the design and onsite assembly of the Robbins Double Shield TBMs for Tunnel-1 of the SLBC tunnel scheme from planning to start-up of the machines. Also, it will provide a current status of the project and describe the advantages of a site assembly. Problems encountered to date and the solutions adopted will also be described. The project comprises over 50 km of tunnels and involves construction of the world?s longest tunnel without intermediate access. The TBM tunnels at 43.9 km in length and 10.0 m diameter will cross the Amrabad plateau, containing a wild life sanctuary and India?s largest tiger reserve, the Rajiv Gandhi. Jaiprakash elected to excavate the tunnel using two tunnel boring machines, rather than by drill and blast, in order to alleviate surface disturbances to environment and the tiger reserve, wild life sanctuary, and protected forestry areas. The Project was awarded to the Main Contractor Jaiprakash Associates Ltd with The Robbins Company as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) supplier in August 2005. The Robbins Company supplied the TBMs along with two continuous conveyor systems and all spares and consumables to complete the tunnel excavation.

Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

In this study, 23 samples of leached ash (LA) were collected from an ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station and geotechnically characterised. The samples were collected at various depths and locations within the ash pond on two separate occasions in order to account for the full variability. The LA within the ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station (LYPS) was found to vary in texture from silt to sand, depending on the location from where the sample was collected. Samples collected near the ash pond inlet discharge point, for instance, contained more than 50 per cent sand sized particles and were subsequently classified under the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as silty sand (SM). Further downstream of the inlet discharge, the LA became progressively finer and was classified accordingly as elastic silt (MH) when the sand content became less than 50 per cent. Basic geotechnical testing revealed that the LA from Loy Yang Power Station was generally acceptable as a landfill cover material. The permeability of LA, however, was generally too high for prescriptive covers, (ie resistive covers that generally rely on the impervious nature of the material to control percolation). Alternative covers, generally rely on the store/release function of a capillary or monolithic barrier to prevent percolation into the landfill. Subsequently, a material that can maintain a high water storage capacity while at the same time, readily allow infiltration and evapotranspiration is required for an alternative cover. Sandy silt and silty sand are optimal soils for alternative covers, as they do not yield water to gravity forces, but do give up most of the water in their pores when subjected to high-matric suction (Kavazanjian, 2001). The effectiveness of alternative covers is ultimately assessed using computer models, such as UNSAT-H and HYDRUS-2D, to rigorously perform water balance calculations. Prior to using a computer model to determine the highest possible percolation in the worst climatic conditions, it is necessary to select the most appropriate materials. This paper suggests a method to screen available materials for use as an alternative cover material on the basis of the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC).

"Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in Fine Grinding of Copper Sulfide Minerals Using a Pilot-Scale Stirred Media Mill - IsaMill The mineral liberation size of run of mine ores has dramatically reduced over recent years. As a result, the demand for fine grinding which is the most energy-intensive form of grinding has markedly increased in the minerals industry. Furthermore, the fine grinding costs increase exponentially with decreasing product particle size. As a result of the increased energy requirement for fine grinding, it is desirable to optimise fine grinding processes such as stirred media milling (ie IsaMill) to enhance energy efficiency, throughput and the product fineness. In the present study, the influence of slurry rheology, grinding media type and grinding media-to-feed size ratio on energy efficiency in a pilot-scale IsaMill was investigated under certain industrially relevant pulp processing conditions. It was shown that a critical rheological state existed, below which the energy required to achieve an 80 per cent passing (ie P80) 20 ¦m product size was unaffected by shear rheology (ie apparent viscosity and shear yield stress) whilst above which the grinding energy required increased dramatically with increasing shear rheology. Colorado River sand (3.35 mm) showed higher energy efficiency than MT1 ceramic media (2.5 mm) for a target P80 of 20 ¦m in the solids concentration range of 38 to 55 per cent by weight, but the former experienced more than four times the wear rate of the later. The high wear rate of the Colorado River sand may be due to its much lower hardness. For feeds with an 80 per cent passing (ie F80) 70 to 110 ¦m, 2.0 or 2.5 mm MT1 media appeared to be more energy efficient than 3.5 mm MT1 media whilst a media-to-feed size ratio of 41 to 53 is applicable for ~50 ¦m (ie F80) feeds for efficient grinding.

Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

A bulk mineral analyser (BMA) suitable for the determination of Cu or Ni in bulk ore samples has been developed at the Lucas Heights Research Laboratories. This analyser, which uses the nuclear resonance scattering technique, is highly specific to the wanted element. The technique has previously been extensively field tested for copper at Mount Isa, Queensland.The present paper discusses the field trial in 1982 of a commercial prototype BMA for nickel. The trial was undertaken at the lateritic nickel mine at Greenvale, Queensland. The BMA and its shielding, together with a laboratory spectrum analyser, were sited in the sample shed adjacent to the workings. Two hundred and thirty-eight ore samples taken directly from the mine blastholes were assayed by the BMA. The average mass of sample was 12 kg, metal contents varied from 0.2 to 3.5 wt/per cent Ni and 4 to 43 wt/per cent Fe and free moisture varied from 11 to 55 wt/per cent. A measurement took 10 min to complete, although this time could have been reduced at the higher nickel grades. The r.m.s. deviation between BMA and chemical assays was 0.09 wt/per cent nickel. Iron and bulk density were also determined by the BMA, r.m.s. deviations being 1.7 wt/per cent and 0.03 g/cmJ respectively. Similar results could be expected from a BMA in routine industrial use at other nickel mines.

At the exploration stage for new mining projects or for medium- and long-term areas of existing mines (typical of South African gold mines), drilling data is on a relatively large grid. This grid is normally larger than the selective mining units (SMUs). Direct estimates for the SMUs and also of much larger block units will then be smoothed due to the information effect and the high error variance. Any capital-intensive project decisions made on the basis of any of the smoothed estimates will tend to misrepresent the economic value of the project or operation, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the mean grade of the orebody. This paper presents a direct approach technique for deriving recoverable resources, referred to as localized direct conditioning (LDC), designed to correct smoothing effects and also to provide support corrections.

The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

Oxidation state of titanium was determined in CaO-SiO2-TiOxslags in the composition range25–53 per cent CaO, 27–46 per cent SiO2, 10–55 per cent TiOxat 1873K using gas equilibration method. In the experiments, slags with different titanium oxide contents were equilibrated with a known carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide ratio. The results were used to determine the Ti3+and Ti4+contents as well as the activity coefficient ratio of corresponding oxides in the slag. The dependency of the activity coefficient ratio as a function of oxygen partial pressure was determined. An ultra-low profile LHD has been developed by EJC Mining Equipment of Burlington, Ontario for narrow-reef mining applications. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the evolution of the machine's design and subsequent field testing. Continuing research and development focuses on optimizing machine performance and controllability, reducing emissions, and enhancing maintainability. Details will be given on field trial experience and ongoing test work being carried out at the manufacturing facility.

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. With the trend toward deeper and consequently hotter holes, measurements of drilling mud properties at atmospheric temperatures are becoming increasingly inadequate.' Both the prediction and control of down-hole mud properties depend in part upon our knowledge of temperatures in the wellbore. Consequently, a better understanding of factors that affect temperatures during circulation and trips could improve drilling operations. It was toward the goal of obtaining this understanding that this study was directed. Other investigators2 have studied the response of fluid temperature in the borehole during trips. However, all of these studies have used an assumed formation temperature profile at the conclusion of circulation and have provided no means to calculate this profile directly. In this study, the formation profile during circulation was calculated. Other investiga-tors3-5 have also studied bottom-hole temperature during circulation. However, they have developed neither general techniques for calculating the entire temperature profile in the system nor generalized methods for predicting bottom-hole fluid temperatures during circulation. Such techniques and methods have been developed and are discussed briefly in the following pages. Temperature Behavior During Circulation Circulation of fluid during the drilling operation is represented schematically in Fig. 1. The process of circulation has three distinct phases: (1) fluid enters the drill pipe at the surface and passes down the drill pipe; (2) fluid exits the drill pipe through the bit and enters the annulus at the bottom; and (3) fluid passes up the annulus and exits the annulus at the surface. To simulate the thermal behavior of the fluid in the system, each of the phases of circulation must be described mathematically. In Phase 1, the fluid enters the drill pipe at a specified temperature, TDo. As the fluid passes down the pipe, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection down the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the drill pipe and the annulus, and time. Phase 2 of the circulating process merely requires that the fluid temperature at the exit of the drill pipe be the same as the fluid temperature at the entrance of the annulus; i.e., TD(L,t) = TA(L,l). Thus in Phase 3, the fluid enters the annulus at TD(L, t). As the fluid flows up the annulus, its temperature is determined by the rate of heat convection up the annulus, the rate of heat exchange between the annulus and the drill pipe, the rate of heat exchange between the formation adjacent to the annulus and the fluid in the annulus, and time. These rates of heat exchange and the time dependency of mud temperature are described by well known heat-flow equation.6 Consequently, as shown in the Appendix, the temperature profiles in the drill pipe, annulus, and formation can be obtained by solving Eqs. 1 through

Simultaneous reduction and foaming of chromium-rich slag have been studied in a laboratory furnace equipped with X-ray image analysis. Reduction of the metal oxides by graphite generated CO, which caused the melt to foam. The slag composition continuously changed due to reactions and dissolution of lining. Gas generation rate, foam height, and gas bubble size were studied and correlated to slag composition. Viscosity increased significantly during the experiments due to a change in slag composition. Bubble sizes varied little during the progress of reactions but differed considerably for different slags. Bubble sizes were largest for V2O5 containing slag, which is contrary to the general understanding that the presence of strong surface active agents reduces the bubble size. The foaming index did not follow expected trends for bubble size and viscosity, suggesting that foaming index is not a suitable parameter for discussion of foams under dynamic conditions. The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

The Bureau of Mines two-stage coal-pyrite flotation process was modified to provide a more concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow which could be dewatered economically by filtration or centrifugation. This was accomplished by doing the first-stage coal flotation step in the conventional manner with a slurry of about 8 percent solids, but running the second-stage pyrite Flotation step with undiluted coal froth concentrate containing about 25 percent solids. The final clean coal underflow produced by the new technique contained between 26 and 30 percent solids; this pulp was sufficiently concentrated to be filtered industrially without further thickening. Every shift provides different conditions and challenges. Coping with stress is an important tool to maintain your physical and mental health. Now, back to mom. Studies on stress tell us that shifting your focus away from what is causing your stress increases your ability to cope. Counting to 10 is one method. Science proves mom right. The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

An important element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) mining research program is the development and evaluation of reliable coal interface detection (CID) systems. Commercially available CID sensors based on natural gamma radiation (NGR) are only applicable if the immediate roof is composed of shaley material. The USBM has made numerous underground and laboratory measurements using several NGR systems approved for installation on mining machines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition, two small handheld NGR instruments were used to make comparative measurements. Underground NGR measurements in 10 different coal seams, potassium-uranium-thorium radiometric analyses on samples from 16 seams, and chemical analyses of coal and rock for correlation with NGR counts were made. Laboratory test results on the effect of air gap and sample thickness, size, and weight on the NGR measurements, as well as general results of the various NGR systems, are discussed.
