The reduction of zinc from slags by a molten, carbon-saturated bath was examined in a laboratory study under conditions of continuous slag feeding. The results show that it is possible to reduce the bulk of the zinc from the slag before there is a net reduction of iron. However, the recovery of zinc was not as high as in batch tests performed in an earlier study. Lead in the slag was reduced simultaneously with the zinc to very low levels and was volatilised. Copper in the slag was reduced and dissolved in the alloy. An attempt was made to identify potentially commercial ways of treating zinc slags using an iron bath. The approaches that appear to have the greatest potential are reduction in a batch process using electrical heating and reduction in a continuous process with co- or countercurrent flow of the slag and alloy. In the latter the alloy would be prepared in a separate furnace before being contacted with the slag. The purpose of this would be to superheat and carburise the alloy so that no additional heat or reductant would have to be supplied in the slag-alloy reactor

"This paper argues that the technology change to mechanization is also going to require a change in people. It presents a model for technological progress and adapts it to the mining industry. It then goes on to motivate the need for mines to become learning organizations in order to achieve maximum value from their people as they become less labour-intensive. In an important sense, mechanization is as much about knowledge as it is about technology.The change when a mine introduces mechanization or a level of automation is not simply one of technology but also a stage in the development of mining from ‘art’ to ‘science’. ‘Art’ describes a state of technology characterized by tacit knowledge, an understanding that comes only from experience, and has no formal procedures and little structure. In contrast, ‘science’ represents a state of technology where all the component processes are understood in detail, all knowledge is explicit, and processes and structures are formal.Studies of other industries, including metal part manufacture and aviation, show that each stage in the progression from art to science changes the nature of the organization and requires a different mix of skills from the workforce. Perhaps the most important change is the increase in knowledge and decision-making required as the technology gets closer to science.There is anecdotal evidence that South African underground hard-rock mines are not learning organizations. Mines by their nature are capitalintensive with long lead times from investment to returns, so there is reluctance to change from the original plans or to encourage staff to think independently. Particularly as mines move from art to science, this reluctance must be overcome.The important lesson for engineers involved in introducing mechanization is to understand that success or failure will be determined by the people involved, and not solely by the technology. The process will almost certainly require a culture change on the mine. We recommend that the mechanization team includes an expert in human and organizational behaviour to ensure that a receptive workforce and management are in place to accept the new technology when it arrives."

"The location of Quintette Coal Limited's pit and geologic nature of the dedicated reserves combine to introduce a number of factors which can adversely affect waste dump stability. These factors include steep terrain, variable material type and particle size, and precipitation. This paper describes the solutions to related waste dump problems. A brief geotechnical review of the waste dumps is given and Quintette's operational strategies during periods of dump stability and instability are discussed. Despite best efforts, failures occasionally occur and discussion is included on Quintette's success at bringing failed dumps safely back into use. IntroductionQuintette Coal Limited (QCL) property is situated on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains near Tumbler Ridge, approximately 120 km southwest of Dawson Creek, British Columbia. This surface mine is located on mountainous terrain and is subject to climatic extremes of wind, precipitation and temperature.QCL has a current annual production of 4.75 million tonnes of metallurgical coal with a stripping ratio of 7: 1. This correctly implies the extraction of over 33 million bank cubic metres (BCM) of waste which is placed on numerous waste dumps at various locations adjacent to the pit.There are three active pits - Mesa, Wolverine, and Shikano (Fig. 1). Shikano is a newly developed pit located near the plant site. It is not subject to the unique dump management problems prevalent at the Mesa and Wolverine pits, therefore the Shikano waste dumps will not be discussed . The dumps for the Mesa and Wolverine pits, however, have been technically and operationally challenging since shortly after mining began in 1983. Their characteristics, associated site specifics and management, therefore, are the subject of this paper.Waste dump locations for the Mesa and Wolverine pits are shown in Figures 2 and 3 as is the relative waste distribution . Each sub-pit is connected to a principal waste dump in reasonable proximity and to an alternate dump should disposal of waste be necessary at that location. The waste dumps are constructed from the top elevations initially to coincide with subpit development. In the initial years (1-7) waste dump heights will be up to 250 m, then, as the mine matures (8-20 years), waste dump maximum heights will continuously decrease to coincide with lower bench elevations"

Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

The Liberty Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina is a curved, cable-stayed, pedestrian bridge with primary support provided by two towers. The bridge is part of the Falls Park redevelopment. The bridge was originally designed to be supported on drilled piers. Alternately, the bridge was supported on a combination of micropiles and anchor piles because of difficult access and subsurface conditions. The use of micropiles and anchor piles led to improved construction scheduling and reduced costs. Micropiles were used to resist compressive loads. Anchor piles were used to resist tensile forces and to eliminate excessive settlement of pile caps into underlying fill during pre-stressing. This paper describes the site history, bridge construction, site and subsurface conditions encountered, and the decisions that led to support of the bridge using micropiles and anchor piles and foundation construction.

This report describes the engineering work leading to the design of an underground coal mine piping system to transport approximately 2,000,000 cubic feet per day of methane gas to the surface from degasification holes drilled horizontally into the coalbed in existing coal mines. Safety instrumentation for detection of gas leaks and provisions for automatic emergency shutdown are included in the design. It also includes specifications for a safe system of handling gas, water, and drill cuttings during drilling of the horizontal holes and recommendations for compressor and metering facilities at the surface. The main pipeline is recommended to be constructed of polyethylene plastic pipe joined by a butt fusion method while lateral lines and separator and meter piping at the horizontal holes are recommended to be screwed steel piping. The materials used are to be resistant to the forces of impact exerted by falling rock. The pipelines are to be suspended from the ceiling with pipe hangers. All steel components are protected from chemical corrosion by applying protective coatings and the vertical casing to the surface is protected from electrolytic corrosion by a rectifier station. Methane gas detectors monitor the mine atmosphere to detect the presence of gas leaks and a pneumatic plastic tubing line provides for control of the safety shutdown system. Both the recommended design and the required construction procedures are in compliance with the applicable Federal codes for coal mine safety.

The Tasman Orogenic Zone is regarded as a single metallogenic province (the Tasman Province) with four SUb-provinces corresponding with its major tectonic components: the Lachlan, New England, Hodgkinson.and North Queensland orogenic provinces. Within the Tasman Province there are four main ore-rock associations.These are1. manganese and iron with sedimentary and basic volcanic rocks,2. zinc-lead-copper and copper with intermediate-acid volcanic sequences,3. minor chromium, platinum, and osmiridium with ultramafic complexes, and4. tin, wolfram, gold, and copper with syn- and posttectonic granitic intrusions.Whereas the ores of ultramafic and volcanic associations form geographically-restricted metallogenic districts, the ubiquitous granitic ores may be subdivided into twenty-one districts that cover almost the entireOrogenic Zone. The Tasman Province is notably lacking in uranium ores and Mississippi Valley-type deposits.There is a distinct tendency for ores of each association to be progressively younger to the east and north, thus paralleling the progressive growth and stabilization of the Zone. Similar ore-rock associations are present in repeated phases of mineralization from the Cambrian to the Permian-Triassic, reflecting the essential homogeneity of the Tasman Province, and the similarity of the successive tectonic cycles.

The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (lMR) separators. The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.   The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

THE first fall meeting of the new Coal Division started on time on Thursday morning, Sept. 11, at Pittsburgh, with Paul Sterling of the Anthracite Section presiding and over a hundred members and guests in the room. The attendance increased from session to session, the total registration being 248. Excellent arrangements had been made by the officers of the Division covering all features of the meeting, the only drawback being that more papers-were listed for presentation than could be discussed in the time available. Howard-N. Evensong, chairman of the Division, explained this situation as sore and sore papers case in by likening it to the case of the small boy who wanted a second niece of pie at the end of a large seal. When his mother remonstrated that if he ate any more he would certainly burst, the young man replied, "Well, you just hand over the pie and then get out of the way." With that Mr. Evensong turned the meeting over to Mr. Sterling, who handled it so well that with ample discussion it was still possible to adjourn at lunch time, all but the group of junior papers having been heard. This series of papers, the output of the .very lively Junior Section organized last spring by the younger men of the Division was regretfully put over until Friday morning, when that on "Heat Drying" by S.. M. Parsley was read.

"Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The rest is found in several other industrial uses, including glass manufacturing, soaps, plastics and pharmaceuticals.Currently, three producers: IMC, PCS and Agrium operate 8 conventional and two solution mines in Saskatchewan, five of which run froth flotation circuits, two heavy media-flotation, two run forced crystallization and one natural crystallization.Potash in SaskatchewanPotash was discovered in Saskatchewan in the early 1940’s while drilling for oil. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

A cyclic leaching process was developed for selectively leaching and recovering cadmium from nickel-cadmium scrap battery waste. The six major steps in the process are the following: (1) washing the plates to remove KOH electrolyte, (2) roasting at 550° to 600° C to oxidize metallic cadmium and decompose cadmium and nickel salts, (3) leaching with an ammonium nitrate solution, (4) precipitation of the leached cadmium from solution as cadmium carbonate using CO2 gas, (5) removal of CO2 from the lixiviator by adjusting to pH 4.5, heating, and evacuating the system, and (6) removal of small amounts of leached nickel from the lixiviator using a solvent extraction technique. The regenerated lixiviator is then recycled to leach additional plates. Cadmium extraction was 94 percent and the cadmium carbonate product contained 0.14 percent nickel and 0.12 percent cobalt impurity. The leached plates were smelted to a high nickel-low iron alloy with no detectable amounts of cadmium.

On Feb. 16, 2012, the Polish coal mining company Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka S.A. set the world record for daily production from a plow-equipped longwall, with an output of 24.4 kt (26,900 st) of coal from a single face. The company commissioned the first Cat longwall system at its Bogdanka Mine, near Lublin in eastern Poland, in March 2010 and within six months had raised the bar to nearly 17 kt/d (18,700 stpd) of cut coal. Since then, Bogdanka has continued to increase its daily output with a plow face that began mining in the new 7/VII/385 panel last October, taking the world record to new levels. In addition to the record output achievement, the plow face advanced more than 27 m (89 ft) at a 1.63-m- (5.3-ft-) cutting height. ?We thought this achievement would be impossible for any shearer in seam heights as low as this,? said Zbigniew Stopa, vice president of Bogdanka.

The test facility at the Delft University of Technology, in the Netherlands, was characterised. Advantages include the possibility of separating particles with high but different densities up to 9 g/cm3, the ease of adjustment to any required separation density and the absence of moving parts. Simultaneous separation of more than two types of particles is possible and the magnetic fluid is safe and convenient to use compared with other heavy liquids. Disadvantages include loss of magnetic fluid with outgoing particles (cost approx US $10/l) and degeneration of fluid due to bacterial activity, reaction with particles and with surroundings. Only non-magnetic materials can be separated, there is limited potential for scaling up and high investment is required on account of the cost of magnets. Future improvements in the design of the apparatus and the properties of the magnetic fluids can only enhance its attractiveness for commercial applications

A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. A method for the selection of the most suitable corrosion inhibitor for a particular system is given. The method involves the evaluation of surface passivity by means of copper ion displacement after the metal surface has been subjected to the corrosive atmosphere. The application of the method to the selection of suitable inhibitors for use in producing wells is described. Correlation with recognized laboratory tests has beet1 found to be good within the limitations of the test. The use of the test to evaluate inhibitor persistencc is described. INTRODUCTION Corrosion as it is associated with the industry shows wide variations in its qualitative as well as its quantitative aspects. This complicates the work of the corrosion engineer. In the past few years the efforts of the corrosion engineer have been further taxed by the large numbers of products being marketed as corrosion inhibitors by various manufacturers. These products are submitted to him together with a limited amount of data to support their use as inhibitors. The data are usually authentic and reliable yet all too often when these products are applied to an actual corrosive system the results are disappointing due to the ineffectiveness of the inhibitor and the corrosive system. The corrosion engineer must select a comparatively limited number of inhibitors for field trial from the large number available. The selection is usually made on the basis of a standardized laboratory test such as that adopted by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers or by field experience in an area; however, testing of this type is discouraging on large numbers of compounds, particularly in view of the specificity of environment. It has been an object of this work to devise a method which will allow the corrosion engineer to select the best inhibitor for a specific environment under field conditions. The test would of necessity be rapid and inexpensive. It would preferably eliminate the need for expensive and delicate instruments. STATEMENT OF THEORY The test as developed makes use of the fact that metal ions will be displaced from solution by metals having a more positive electrode potential. Thus, if an active iron surface is exposed to a solution of a copper salt, free copper will plate spontaneously on the iron surface as it is displaced from the salt solution by iron ions. If the iron surface is passified, as by coating with an insulating-type organic corrosion inhibitor, it is no longer capable of displacing the copper ions due to its own limited ionization. The result will be a change in the amount of copper plated upon exposure to a neutral copper salt solution. In practice it has been found possible to measure the magnitude of the alteration of the cell potential by determining the copper deposited on a standard iron surface under controlled conditions. This means that, as the film builds up, the resulting shift in the electrode potential tends to cause the iron surface to act more like a noble metal, resulting in a reduction in the cell potential to a point that copper will no longer plate spontaneously. Obviously, the salts of other metals such as silver, gold or platinum might be used for this operation; however, copper was selected because of the color difference of the plate, the comparatively low cost of copper salts and the ease of evaluation of the plated copper. Furthermore, its high cell potential provides a substantial driving energy. The determination of the copper is readily done colorimetrically by dissolving it in 5 per cent ammonium hydroxide solution containing 2 per cent potassium per-sulfate. The blue color of the copper ammonic complex ion so developed may be compared with standards prepared by dissolving known quantities of copper powder in the same reagent. In routine screening it is seldom desirable to determine the amount of copper plated. It is usually more important to determine the concentration of inhibitor required to prevent the plating of copper.

This report presents a complete qualitative picture of knowledge of the composition of petroleum as of April 1965. The material is presented in detai 1 on two imaginative maps--one, the Hydrocarbon Hemisphere, depicts the hydrocarbons that have been identified in petroleum; the other, the Heterogeneous Hemisphere, shows the sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds that have been found. All compounds are placed on the maps according to boiling point. The accompanying text illustrates by structural formulas the several types of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon compounds identified, presents some quantitative data, and points out the possible geochemical significance of a number of the compounds. The possibilities of the Petroleum World of the future are discussed as a function of needed research.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines began a five-year study of the 7.0 million acre Ketchikan Mining District during 1990. This study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. The study area was subdivided and then prioritized by mineral potential into work units. Bureau field work in 1990 focused on the southern portion of Prince of Wales Island and vicinity. Extensive mineral resources have been mined historically in the area and are presently being evaluated by private industry. Information in this report is based on an extensive literature search and Bureau field work. Over 150 mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences were visited in 1990; an aggregate of 1,300 rock, placer, and limestone samples were taken; and nearly 3 miles of underground workings were mapped. Many prospects, some untouched for more than 80 years, were mapped and sampled. High metal values at several prospects were confirmed by Bureau sampling. Reconnaissance sampling along logging roads on Southern Prince of Wales Island revealed mineralized areas not previously recorded. Follow-up work at many locations is planned for the 1991 season.
