Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.

Mining induced seismicity and rockbursts have been part of the deep level gold mining industry in South Africa for many years. One could be forgiven for thinking that we should know everything there is to know by now to have rockbursting under control to a level that it has minimal impact on safety and production. Well, we don’t… There are things we know that we know, and they are implemented, or should be. There are thigs we know that we don’t know, and they are researched, or should be. There are things we don’t know that we don’t know, and, well, we don’t know… We know that seismicity and the associated potential for rockbursts generally increase with an increase in stress (increase in mining depth and/or mining span and creation of remnants) and proximity to faults and dykes. We know there are a number of potential sources of events in a mine; that is: mining abutments, pillar abutments, mining faces and geological structures (faults and dykes). We know there are a number of event mechanisms associated with these sources; that is: slip on a geological structure, shear through intact rock and bursting of the rock near the edge of a mining excavation. One of the tools used more and more and with increased success to identify event source mechanisms is Moment-Tensor analysis (MT). This typically assist in differentiating between three event mechanism components: volumetric deformation component, axial deformation component and slip / shear component. The insight gained from MT assist greatly in identifying the most likely event source to assist in understanding the rockmass response to mining. We know that the seismic response in our mines are mining induced (not natural). This may seem trivial, but it is important to realise that we influence the seismic response with the way we mine, and by how much we mine (extraction ratio). Therefore we put design rules and strategies in place to reduce the seismic hazard and we install rockburst support in our mining excavations. We know the seismic response to mining is influenced by the properties of the rockmass, including strength, stiffness and brittleness, but quantifying its influence is typically more difficult than expected. We know numerical modelling can improve the engineer’s understanding of the potential rockmass response associated with designed mining layouts and strategies. For our environment (narrow, tabular large area) elastic boundary element modelling remains the most convenient and practical approach, but it overestimates the stress at mining abutments and underestimates the stress further away from these abutments. Adding a crushing (based in limit equilibrium) modelling approach vastly improves the boundary element modelling ability to simulate the deformed (interpret fractured) zones and associated redistribution of stress. We don’t know how to quantify what an acceptable seismic risk is. We don’t know if we can mine remnants at an acceptable seismic risk. Some remnants are extracted surprisingly easy, others serve us with devastating rockbursts. The limit equilibrium modelling shows potential to significantly improve our ability to quantify the rockburst risk. We don’t know if large-scale preconditioning is possible and will be effective to significantly reduce the seismic risk associated with remnant and pillar mining. Research is required (and has been initiated). Vast areas of ground have been extracted historically in the South African gold fields. Most gold reserves are now in deeper ground (4000 m) and historic remnants (areas left before due to mining difficulties) as well as pillars (regional stability pillars). If we cannot find ways to extract these reserves at acceptable risk levels, the future of the South African gold mining industry is very short.

Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

The financial analyst's job is to make an objective appraisal of the investment opportunities which exist within the various industries under his supervision within the context of the economic model provided by his firm and the a climate of investor sentiments. Industry analysis is critical. When a major investment trend develops, usually the stock of all companies within the specific industry react in the same direction. I should emphasize here, however, that an investment trend is influenced by the economic outlook, but economics is not the only determinant - investor psychology and arbitrary political factors may be of equal or greater importance. Part of our job is to recognize trends early and determine whether they are valid. Following industry analysis, the analyst must examine the specific companies within that industry since some companies usually react more violently than others to industry trends, whether they be favorable or adverse. To simplify the process of evaluating an investment opportunity, it is convenient to isolate three types of factors which have a bearing on every sort of business although the degree of influence of each factor may vary from industry to industry. These categories are, 1) independent or external factors insofar as they are beyond the control of corporate management, 2) interdependent factors insofar as influence may be exerted by industry-wide action, and 3) dependent factors covering the area of internal decisions which are basically under the control of the individual corporate managers. Although the title of this paper, "The Corporate Use of Cash Flow," is only one segment of the third category, it may be useful to continent on the first two categories as well. The independent factors may be either economic or governmental. The economic factors include cyclicality which may be very high in the case of the basic commodity industries or relatively low as in the case of utilities. Underlying growth rates, another independent factor, may range from the business equipment industry with an annual growth rate of 14% through the electric utility industry with a growth rate of about 7% per year to the

A single stage ball mill-cyclone circuit was extensively tested for its reactions to step changes in three controllable variables: feed rate, water to cyclones, and water to the ball mill. A series of carefully designed tests are to be carried out in order to determine relationships between the various ball mill and cyclone parameters. Cyclone overflow particle size distribution is to be continuously monitored during the tests using an ultrasonic device. Other circuit variables that are to be measured and recorded are feed rate, ball mill mass flow, cyclone feed and overflow densities, cyclone feed sump level, water flows, etc. Once the circuit performance is defined, two types of grinding circuit control systems will be evaluated: (a) mass flow-based; (b) particle size- based. Results obtained by each approach in terms of feed rate and cyclone overflow size distributions are discussed. The high sensitivity of continuous particle size measurements to grinding circuit disturbances is emphasized.

The rare earths in elemental form are required for a variety of scientific and technological purposes. They are not easily obtained in this form, due to the great chemical stability of the rare-earth compounds and the strong tendency of elemental metals to react with everything they come in to contact with, especially at high temperatures. Beginning in the 1950s, when sufficient quantities of separated rare earths became available, as the result of intense research and development, three processing routes were developed to accomplish the preparation of all 16 naturally occurring rare-earth elements. They are chemical reduction of the halide intermediates, the oxides and electrochemical reduction of chlorides and oxide-fluoride mixtures. Not all the processes are effective with all the rare earths. In spite of the celebrated similarity of trivalent rare earths, the physical properties of individual rare-earth elements are sufficiently different that a variety of techniques are required for their preparation. The development of reduction processes for the rare-earth metals are covered in this paper, with focus on the oxide reduction routes. The strong reliance of effective reduction processes on the fundamental science of reduction reactions is highlighted.

Most fatalities in tunnel fires are caused by the spread of toxic smoke. Controlling the spread of smoke is crucial to provide a survivable environment for emergency egress. A properly designed and tuned feedback control loop is required to achieve a target flow that is slow enough to allow pedestrians to escape under different boundary conditions. Feedback control loops are also helpful in optimizing energy consumption under moving traffic conditions. A reliable feedback flow control system requires sophisticated engineering knowhow and experience, careful selection of instruments and controlled variables, and thoughtful implementation from design through field testing and commissioning.

In this paper, autogenous grinding is defined as the combined crushing and grinder of a run-of-mine ore or the product from a primary crusher, in a single stage grinding mill. This is in contrast to pebble milling where pebbles are substituted for steel balls to grind a ball mill size feed. The autogenous mill to compete in efficiency with normal methods of crushing and grinding must not use greater power, must use less labor and steel, and must produce an equivalent product.

Editor's Note: For purposes of uniformity throughout this book, Coal Preparation, 5th Edition, the editors have advocated the use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series of testing sieves (see Table 6-2) as the testing sieves of modem choice. The adoption and use of the U.S.A. Sieve Series and its forerunner, the Tyler Standard Screen Scale, has for over seventy-five years introduced uniformity into reports; has simplified the comparison of results; and has provided control for operation of modem coal preparation circuits. While a full explanation of the differences, and more importantly the similarities of these two measuring systems cannot be stated here, it is felt that a brief clarification of terms is in order. The difference between the U.S.A. Sieve Series and the Tyler Standard Screen Scale Sieve Series is the identification method. Tyler Screen Scale sieves are identified by mesh designation with the width of opening varying by the square root of two, or 1.414 times the width of opening in the previous sieve. The U.S.A. Sieves are identified by openings in millimeters or microns and also arbitrary numbers which do not necessarily mean the mesh count; this series uses width of opening variations in the order of approximately the ratio of the fourth root of two, or 1.189. Tyler Standard Screen Scale and U.S.A. Sieves can be used interchangeably, and to avoid confusion the nameplate of all Tyler Screen Scale sieves show the U.S.A. Number, while all U.S.A. Sieves show Tyler Screen Scale mesh equivalent numbers on the nameplate. INTRODUCTION Sizing is the process of separating mixed mineral particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles range between definite maximum and minimum sizes. This chapter applies the modem mechanical screen and the liquid-solid cyclone (hydrocyclone) to the process of sizing solid particles as applied to coal preparation. Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modem coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modem preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1. Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2. Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or for processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3. Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits.

Mr. Chairman, members of SME, and guests It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to appear before this group. The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

"This paper describes the innovative full-face conventional tunnel excavation technology, with its advantages in terms of savings and safety. The full-face approach has been developed throughout the experiences gained in tunnel construction. The innovative design approach is focused primarily on the deformation response of the ground acting first and foremost ahead of the face, which is analyzed, predicted and controlled by pre-confinement of the core. The advantage of this method is particularly evident in difficult grounds. This paper will present the outstanding benefits given by the adoption of the full-face approach in two projects, the “Sochi” and the “Visnove” tunnels. THEORY AND DESIGN ASPECTS OF THE FULL-FACE EXCAVATION The main challenges in tunnel and underground construction industry are gathering the design data from the ground that is being excavated and foreseeing the critical stage during construction, where the materials are in its most critical configuration. These challenges shall be addressed during excavation when the lining and the excavation disturbance have not yet reach the equilibrium. The in situ stresses in the ground are redistributed (forming an “arch-effect”) around the opening, with zones of increased stresses around the walls of the excavation (Figure 1). The distribution of the stresses can be close or far from the excavation profile, depending upon having a ground capable of withstanding the deviated stresses well or unable to withstand them, respectively. In the latter case, the ground will plasticize and deform in proportion to the volume of ground involved in the plasticization phenomenon. When the ground completely cannot withstand the stresses redistribution, it will cause the collapse of the excavation. While in the first case, the arch effect occurs naturally, in the second case, it does occur naturally only when the ground is stabilized properly. In the case of collapse, the arch-effect must be produced artificially operating on the ground prior excavation. The design should be based on the understanding of if and how the arch-effect can be mobilized during tunnel excavation and ensure that is formed by calibrating excavation and stabilization operations appropriately. The arch-effect is function of the medium that is being excavated, the action taken to excavate and the reaction expected following the excavation."

Ten of the most common mistakes made in the specification and design stages related to user expectations are reviewed along with the cost vs. price implications of those decisions. A general specification and design hierarchy that designers can use to improve conveyor design is included.

INTRODUCTION Proliferation and enhanced synthesis of collagen by pulmonary fibroblasts have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis (Goldstein and Fine, 1986). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (Kelley, 1990). One cytokine, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (Go) cells into the C1 phase of the cell cycle (Chen and Rabinovitch, 1989). Others regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from Gl into the S phase (Leof et al., 1982). These two classes of cytokines have been termed, respectively, competence and progression factors. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which fibroblasts are exposed to culture supernatants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (Bitterman et al., 1982; Bitterman et al., 1983; Elias et al., 1988). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using plateletpoor plasma (lacking competence factor(s)) as a substitute for fetal calf serum has been described (Kuman et al., 1988; Bauman et al., 1990). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors. In order to obtain more consistent results and with the ultimate goal to be able to discriminate between the effects of competence factors as opposed to progression factors, we have conducted experiments to determine the appropriate concentrations of plasma and PDGF required for imparting competence in the fibroblast proliferation assay. We tested lung fibroblast cells obtained from explants of rat lung tissue and also a fetal human lung fibroblast cell line obtained from American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC153). MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibroblasts Specific pathogen-free, male Sprague-Dawley rats were use in some studies. Animals were given a lethal intraperitoneal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Fibroblasts were isolated by chopping the lung in enzymes that digest the connective tissue but liberate lung cells for further study (Rabovsky et al., 1989). After digestion, the remaining lung tissue suspension was filtered through two layers of sterile gauze and centrifuged to recover lung fibroblasts. These were resuspended in culture medium that contained 10% fetal calf serum and distributed to culture plates for growth. In other experiments, a human fetal lung fibroblast cell line, obtained from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 20852, was used instead of rat lung fibroblasts. In these cases, a 1 ml ampule containing human fetal fibroblasts was plated into a tissue culture flask containing medium plus 10% fetal calf serum. For both types of fibroblasts, culture medium was changed 3 times per week and cultures were incubated at 37°C until confluent. Harvested rat and human lung fibroblasts were quantified using an electronic cell counter equipped with a cell sizing attachment (Coulter Electronics, Inc., Hialeah, Florida). Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation The basic procedural outline of Kumar et al. (1988) was used with modifications to evaluate tritiated thymidine incorporation into fibroblast DNA following exposure to PDGF and plasma. Both rat and human lung fibroblasts were plated at 50,000 cells/ml at a density of 250,000 cells/25cm2 culture plate. Cells were quiesced for 4 days with 2% rat plasma. As the assay was refined, fibroblasts were quiesced in plasma-free media for 48 hrs, since the mitogenic activity of 2% plasma was variable. Test medium was applied for a period of 6 hrs, followed by a 24 hr tritiated thymidine (lµCi/ml) labelling period in plasma-free media. Medium alone was used as a negative control and media with 10 or 20% fetal calf serum was used as the positive control for rat and human fibroblasts, respectively. Cell Quantification and Measurement of Mitogenesis Twenty-four hours after the addition of tritiated thymidine, the fibroblasts were washed with 5ml of fresh serum-free media, centrifuged and resuspended in phosphate-buffered saline. The cells were dissolved in 0.5m1 of O.1N NaOH and radioactivity determined in a beta counter. Incorporation of trititaed thymidine as an index of DNA synthesis was expressed as DPM/fibroblast. A common assumption in determining the shear strength of a rock joint using a direct shear test is that the surfaces undergoing relative shear are in complete contact. Furthermore, the limiting displacement associated with the residual strength values is obtained based on engineering judgement through visual inspection of shear force versus displacement curves. This study proposes a systematic way of determining the residual shear strength of rock joints by evaluating the limiting displacement leading to a minimum cohesive strength value and taking the true area of contact into account. The results of the study indicate that there is a limiting displacement associated with the residual shear strength, and some rocks may have an inherent interface residual cohesive strength different from zero. When the cohesion is different from zero, the residual shear strength is likely to be underestimated if the true area of contact is not considered. In the case where zero calculated cohesion is obtained, the area of contact has no bearing on the shear strength equation because the frictional force depends only on the normal load.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

Grinding has a marked effect on concentrator recovery and opera- ting cost, improved operation through automatic control can enhance plant performance. The correct application of automatic control can only be accomplished after the basic process variables and their effect on mill operation have been defined. This paper develops a control system for a closed circuit grinding system. Typical control systems such as feed, water flow, level and circulating load are discussed. A method of determining controllability is outlined using the calculated reaction curve technique. Various successful methods of automatic grinding control applications are discussed and future possibilities are outlined. Although this paper primarily deals with closed circuit wet grinding circuits, the principles involved can be readily applied to other processes.

Continental Oil Company has spent over four years of research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining. This work included laboratory investigations of salt solution, brine flow, selective extraction of KC1 from sylvinite, and control of cavity geometry. Laboratory results were expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well mining systems were studied in the field work. The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined from a thin sylvinite ore zone in the Carlsbad Potash Basin. A two-well mining system was used for this test. The potential economic value of solution mining has been recognized for many years, and applicable United States patents date back into the past century. Principal advantages of the process over conventional mining include (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques in- stead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths.

In addition to this, it has wide industrial use in the manufacture of many products - detergents, baking powder, carbonated beverages, steel, matches, munitions, glass, insecticides, dyes, water softeners and innumerable others. Not only does phosphorus make life possible for us - it also helps us to live longer and better.
