Recent advances in rock mass mechanics and computational technology now allow for stability analysis of excavations in "wet" mines where mining-induced changes in rock mass deformation and fluid flow are coupled and time-dependent. All the usual dry mine parameters including the premining stress state and rock mass properties are taken into account, in addition to water pressure and flow in jointed, possibly porous, rock masses. Finite element analyses of shafts and tunnels as circular, elliptical, rectangular and arched-rectangular hole shapes excavated in an initially stressed and pressurized rock mass indicate that the usual guidelines for optimum shape and orientation of single openings apply. Here, optimum means maximizing the minimum wall safety factor, or equivalently, minimizing the peak stress concentration. The results also show that failure originates in elements at the wall and that the minimum safety factor at the wall in the wet case is always less than the dry case regardless of drainage time allowed.

The objective of this paper is to back-analyze the August 6th ,2007 collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in order to better understand the geometric and geo- mechanical factors which contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program along with the best available information is used for the back- analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six step base model of the mining in he Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters: rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis , a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) Overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal size pillars, 2) The abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse, 3) From the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.

The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

Approximately sixty, small, surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the safe standards of worker behavior and work conditions. Data were collected through the use of operation-specific, on-site safety records covering seven major occupational units. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification; feedback, both immediate and delayed was initiated to improve safety performance. The experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to continue to pursue this behavioral approach; however, a stricter methodology needs to be adopted in the collection and analysis of data.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

Performance of mineral filler particles in ceramic applications can be enhanced markedly by adsorbing polymers of optimum molecular structure and dosage. In a recent work by Chen and Somasundaran (1997), a novel scheme of controlled polymer adsorption was used to produce nanocomposites of unique core-shell designs. Towards this purpose, adsorption and desorption behavior of selected polyacrylic acids (PAA) on three minerals; alumina, titania, and silicon carbide, was examined as a function of relevant parameters. Adsorption of P AA was found to depend on polymer molecular weight, pH, as well as solids loading. Specifically, the adsorption density was found to increase with increase in polymer molecular weight for non-porous alumina while it was found to decrease in the case of porous alumina. This is attributed to the inaccessibility of the pores to the larger polymers. An unexpected finding was the change in the adsorption density of PAA with solids loadings. PAA adsorbs on silicon carbide only at low pH values when the particles have very low surface charge suggesting that the adsorption in this case is controlled by electrostatic forces. Using polyacrylic acid as bridging agent between the alumina fillers (core) and nanosize alumina or titania particles (shells), controlled layer by layer deposition of nanoparticle on the core particle surface could be obtained.

Peat has unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, high buffering capacity, and it is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste treatment applications. The literature indicates promising use of peat in treating municipal and on-site effluent, removal of low concentrations of heavy metals from wastewaters, and adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

Long term production planning in open pit mines requires the determination of cutoff grade, mining and milling production rates, mining sequence, mine life, and ultimate pit limits. These variables interact in a circular fashion, that is, the value of a variable can not be determined without the knowledge of the value of the preceding variable in the circle. Therefore, a genuine solution to the problem necessitates simultaneous determination of the variables. Such a solution methodology, comprised of a group of heuristic algorithms and an unconventional dynamic programming algorithm, is described in this paper. The methodology is applied to a small size Western US gold deposit to illustrate its logic and capabilities.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 23rd Annual National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The four inductees are: William Wheeler Coleman who served 46 years, from 1911 to 1957, as president and chairman of the company that is now Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, WI, a world leader in the manufacture of surface and underground mining equipment. Dr. Allen Van Heyl, Jr., an economic geologist who served with the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 50 years beginning in 1943. He studied more of the nation?s mineral deposits than most could begin to imagine. Arthur Lakes contributed enormously to the geological and mining sciences in the western United States as a geologist, teacher, writer and artist over a period of more than four decades beginning in 1869. The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, is named for him. Samuel Calvin McLanahan, through his inventive genius, changed the direction of his family?s company from that of a foundry to a leading manufacturer of minerals processing equipment to become today?s McLanahan

Introduction Although autogenous grinding applications date back to the early years of mineral processing when tumbling-type mills were first used, there has been a renewed interest in this type of grinding over the past few decades. A review of the historical aspects of autogenous grinding is provided which follows the development of the various types of mills and processes. Wet and dry grinding operations using either autogenous or semiautogenous mills, including the Aerofall mill, are described. Em¬phasis has been placed on the test work required to evaluate the feasibility of using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding for a spe¬cific application. The factors which must be considered to establish the appropriate design criteria for these types of grinding circuits are discussed in detail. Successful application of these grinding circuits results from a thorough test program, a careful analysis of the test results, and a practical engineering approach to the design of the process flowsheet and milling equipment. Certain pebble milling applications, where the pebbles consist of the ore or rock itself, can be classified as autogenous pebble mill grinding, or better known as ore-pebble mill grinding. In the generic sense, pebble milling includes those grinding operations using a tum¬bling mill in which the grinding media consists of various types of pebbles, either ore or other pebbles, instead of metal balls. Conse¬quently, this subject is covered separately in Chapter 5, Pebble Mills. Operating data from many of the installations located throughout the world are included in this chapter. Our appreciation is extended to those companies who contributed this important information. History of Autogenous Grinding F. C. BOND Autogenous grinding, the grinding of ore by itself rather than by special metallic or nonmetallic grinding bodies distinct from the ore, has an old and honorable place in the art of mineral processing. It antedates the use of the rod mill and is only a few years younger than the development of the continuously fed rotating tumbling mill in which it is accomplished. Its history71, 72 is inextricably bound up with that of gold mining. Every important early development of autogenous grinding took place on ores of gold, except in one case of silver ore. In common with many other features of modern mineral processing, autogenous grinding would have been greatly retarded if the winning of gold had been so small a part of mining in the past as it is today. Gold unlocked the secrets of rock-on-rock grinding. In years past gold ores were crushed in stamp batteries and then flowed over copper plates covered with mercury which amalgamated the gold. The McArthur Forrest cyanide process for the dissolution of gold in a dilute alkaline cyanide solution appeared in 1890. With finer grinding it recovered more gold than could be won by amalgama¬tion alone. The first response was to stamp in cyanide solution and finer mesh screens guarding the stamp discharge. However, the fine screens greatly restricted the tonnage stamped, and they wore out rapidly. Rotating tumbling mills70, 73 were the obvious choice to grind the coarse product from stamps. Many of these were Gates tube mills; more than 1,000 of these were sold between 1907 and 1913. They were made in 6, 51h, and 5 ft diam, with lengths of 20 and 22 ft. The 5 x 22-ft size was the most popular. The term tube mill did not refer to the mill shape, but included all tumbling mills using grinding pebbles. The flint or chert rocks found along the coasts of Denmark and Normandy are probably the most durable and resistant to abrasive and tumbling wear of any on earth. They were much used in the early tube mills. The early linings were all silex or Danish flint blocks, cemented into place with portland cement. Local hard stones or cast iron blocks were also used later. The cast iron liners carried lifters and were not bolted to the shell, but were held in a tight circle against it by steel wedges hammered home between them. The first ribbed metal liners designed to hold grinding pebbles pounded into them by the mill action were developed at El Oro, Mexico, about 1905. These and the Forbes, Komata, and Tonopah types, as well as the Osborne type developed in South Africa within about five years, were very successful in reducing liner wear. They sometimes lasted two years or more, and equalled or exceeded the life of silex lining at a lower cost. Some of the types were patented. The pioneer name recorded in the history of autogenous grinding is that of Kenneth L. Graham. In 1907 at the Geldenhuis Deep Ltd. mine near Johannesburg, he ran a comparative test on two tube mills. One mill used pieces of the common gold ore, or banket, and the other used the customary imported Danish pebbles as grinding media. He published the first account of autogenous grinding.'' In a test lasting 81 days the ore pebbles showed a definite saving over the Danish pebbles. Graham's historic paper also describes the invention of B. Chew of the Crown Deep Mines of the first trammel to be attached to a grinding mill discharge. The first known account of autogenous grind¬ing printed outside of South Africa was the description of the Graham test in Mining and Scientific Press's The use of grate- vs. overflow¬discharge was also described at this time." The news of this successful test appears to have had immediate effect, for by the end of 1908 the number of tube mills on the Rand had increased from 72 to 120.76 Presumably, most of these mills were now using autogenous grinding. The ore was principally a hard conglomerate of quartz peb¬bles cemented by silica, and was eminently suitable for use as a grind¬ing media. It is unfortunate that in South Africa the new autogenous process continued to be called by its old name of pebble milling, since the name does not distinguish between grinding with ore and grinding with extraneous pebbles. For increased clarity the former is called rock pebble milling. The first historical stage in the development was what is now designated as secondary autogenous grinding, or rock pebble milling. It consists of grinding a feed all passing 'A in. or finer with ore pebbles about 2 to 4 in. in diameter. The next stage to develop was that now called intermediate autogenous grinding, where larger amounts of larger pebbles about 5 in. in size were used to grind ore which had been crushed to about rod mill feed size or somewhat finer. It was developed on the Rand and in other places where coarse stamp screens were used to increase mill tonnage. In many cases the early secondary and intermediate autogenous mills have now been replaced by conventional ball mills and rod mill-ball mill circuits, with the object of further increasing grinding capacity. The third stage to develop is designated as wet primary autogenous grinding, in which run-of-mine ore or a primary crusher product is all fed to the autogenous mill together. It developed many years later indepen¬dently in the United States and in South Africa. The fourth and most recent stage is that of dry primary autogenous grinding, which developed in the United States and Canada. All four stages originated in gold mining. The first use of commercial autogenous grinding outside of the Rand apparently took place five years later in 1912 at the Santa Gertrudis gold mine at Pachuca, 55 miles northeast of Mexico City. The U.S. Geological Survey estimate of the total remaining reserves of lignite in this country as of Jan. 1, 1967 was about 448 billion tons. This represents 27 percent of the total coal reserves on a tonnage basis and about 17 percent on a thermal basis. Approximately 98 percent of these reserves are in a vast lignite field located in western North Dakota and eastern Montana. This field also extends north into the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Despite these large reserves and relative ease of mining by stripping operations, lignite production historically has accounted for less than 1 percent of the national total. This is largely due to the fact that the lignite deposits are located in an area that has no large centers of population and the economical radius of transportation is limited by its relatively high moisture and low heating value. Commercial utilization of North Dakota lignite for power production became firmly established in the mid-1920's with the development of the first successful lignite-burning equipment. Most of the early lignite-fired boilers were equipped with spreader stokers, but as the size of the plants increased, pulverized-coal firing became the more popular method, and with few exceptions, the plants built during the past 15 years are pc-fired.

The Red Dog massive sulfide deposit is located in the western Brooks Range of Alaska 100 miles north of the village of Kotzebue. It contains the largest zinc reserve in the world. Reserves were doubled in 1995 with the discovery of the Aqqaluk deposit and significantly increased in 1996, with the discovery of a deep zone of mineralization to the north. At present the global reserve and resource is 143 million tonnes of 16.1 % zinc and 4.3% lead. Red Dog is a silica + sulfide synsedimentary replacement deposit hosted in barite and black shale of the Mississippian Kuna Formation. Red Dog was thrust northward during the late Mesozoic Brookian orogeny. Understanding the setting of the deposit at the time of formation and its subsequent deformation history is critical to current exploration efforts and to future discoveries in the district.

"INTRODUCTION The Crossrail project provides an East-West link across London enabling an additional 200 million journeys each year linking up major business centres and existing transportation interchanges, while reducing congestion at street level and within the current underground system. The project has built major structures in Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL), including 5 new stations, 6 crossover caverns and numerous passages, adits and ventilation tunnels. Construction has taken approximately 4 years, and has involved the spraying of over 200,000m3 of concrete. At the start of the project there was a lack of available records from previous projects concerning concrete falls, which hindered risk assessments and the ability to make meaningful comparisons around spraying or material performance. This paper redresses this lack of data by providing information on falls experienced on this project and makes recommendations to assist future projects. Construction Methods Table 1 below summarises the main contracts with elements of permanent SCL. The listed primary lining lengths include pilot tunnels, side drift tunnels and enlargements as separate tunnels.A range of construction sequences were used in order to deal with the design requirements, geometry, and the ground and ground water conditions. The following briefly summarises the build up by layers, with typical design dimensions provided for a platform sized tunnel (approximately 9m internal diameter), excluding tolerance allowances. Some linings were sprayed in more than one layer to allow for inclusion of reinforcement layers or to avoid a too aggressive build-up of thickness: •,Initial shotcrete, or sealing, layer (ISL) of 75mm followed by a Primary Lining (PL) of 300mm. •,Regulating layer of 40mm followed by a Waterproof membrane (Sprayed membrane, 3-6mm). •,Secondary lining (SL) of 250mm with a separate sprayed fire protection layer (FPL) of 50mm."

The idea that fragmentation for mineral processing results from some tradeoff between increased drilling and blasting and increased load on the primary crusher is well known. In a previous paper (Lundquist and Konya, 1963) the authors reported on the results of a laboratory scale study which attempted to quantify this tradeoff in energy terms. If we look only at the production of new surface area, blasting is 1700 times as energy efficient as crushing. On an energy cost basis, crushing is 57 times as expensive per unit surface produced as blasting with dynamite and more than 700 times as expensive as blasting with ANFO. The comminution process at an open pit operation starts with the drilling of blast holes and ends after the material has gone through the fine grind circuit. Operators usually break the process into several separate operations and do their cost analysis based on this approach. Often drilling and blasting is considered as one system and crushing and grinding are considered as one or two separate and independent systems. Operators will independently optimize each system. The cost for the drilling and blasting system is obvious in operations which use contract drillers to do the drilling and either contract the blasting to a distributor or do the blasting themselves. The cost of rock breaking in this manner is readily available since the contract driller will supply a monthly drilling cost to the operation and either the distributor who is contracting the blasting or the distributor who is supplying the powder to the blasting operation will also supply a monthly billing. In either case, the costs can easily be seen on a monthly or per ton basis. They are not difficult to compute even when drilling and blasting are done entirely in-house.

The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

"Conventional" coal dryers really do not exist. What we really mean to say is that there are many and varied kinds of coal dryers -- and the "air handling problem" is really the only portion of it which has been approached for solution by conventional methods. It now appears that these conventional methods need supplementing by some new, relatively unconventional apparatus. In order to approach this matter with mutual understanding, here is a quick survey of the coal drying art. Figure #1 shows a McNally Pittsburgh Pulso Dryer, In the McNally Pulso Dryer, the coal is fed-onto the screen by a rotary feeder assuring even distribution of the coal. As the coal travels forward due to the action of the screen, it is subjected to a controlled pulsating flow of hot gases. T ese originate below the deck and are directed up through the moving bed of coal. Fines sifting through the deck are dried in the hopper below the screen as they fall through the hot gases to an evacuation screw. The coal remaining on the screen is dried to the desired degree when it reaches the discharge end. At this point, it is directed down into the evacuation screw to combine with the fines, or it may be discharged as a separate product. As the coal travel down the screen, it is subjected to intermittent upward currents of hot gases. These first distend the bed allowing the gases to come into intimate contact with the coal particles for rapid and efficient heat transfer. Then, as the flow of gas is cut off, the bed settles and the extreme fines sift through the screen preventing their being carried away into the exhaust system.

Unplanned tailgate collapses and difficult mining conditions in U.S. longwalls have necessitated the use of innovative tailgate support systems. Severe ground movement induced by longwall loading has caused operators to utilize secondary support systems that can match yield and strength requirements with expected ground reactions. Standing support performance requirements depend on the nature of the ground deformation behavior, and therefore require a good understanding of the interaction between the support and ground to achieve an optimum roof support system. Mining operations often employ standing support strategies that are unique to their mine. A support system that functions successfully in one situation could fail in another situation. It is important that the design and installation of the standing support systems provide the highest probability of preventing roof falls. Pumpable roof supports are currently being used to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining. A full understanding of the impact of these performance characteristics is necessary to optimize the support application and to provide a foundation for making further improvements in the support performance. Optimization of roof support applications helps to ensure the protection of mine workers by preventing roof falls due to inadequate support design. The load capacity and stiffness characteristics of a 27-in.-diameter pumpable support system was evaluated using the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). Previously, tests to evaluate the performance characteristics were performed on a single pumpable support. The goal of this new research is to evaluate the performance characteristic effects of the pumpable support system and compare it to an individual pumpable test examination. This research of a pumpable support system configuration simulates the current installation practices in U.S. coal mines.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

"There is always a demand in the mining industry to improve the safety and efficiency of roof bolting. Since 2008, Anglo American and Fletcher® have been working together to develop a new roof bolter concept that is safer and more ergonomic while maintaining current production rates. The recognized types of machines currently used in South Africa are always under constant review for improvement; however, there are limitations to the current design. The majority of the machines in South Africa are the “Man in Position” roof bolters. There are currently over 200 of these roof bolters in South Africa, with the bulk of the machines being twin-boom units. When operated correctly, these machines are safe, versatile, reliable and productive. However, with the operators located close to the drilling and bolting operations, they can be exposed to operational hazards. In addition, the major amount of material handling can be quite difficult on an operator. Anglo American, with a desire to improve safety, approached Fletcher to develop a remote style machine with simplified controls that maintained the productivity of the twin-boom machines. After several prototypes, the current model was developed. The chassis was designed for better operator comfort. A dual mast drill module was implemented to reduce the total time to bolt a cut. A remote operator’s station was incorporated to remove the operator from the front of the machine. The design was all about producing a safe and ergonomic machine from front to rear. This paper will explain the evolution and technological advancements from earlier prototypes to the current production machine. INTRODUCTION With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950’s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner). Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor intensive and repetitive. These labor intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin)."
