Early attempts to apply superconductivity to the beneficiation of kaolin required very large refrigerators to remove the heat generated during rapid charging and discharging of the magnet. In the early 1990's, Advanced Cryo Magnetics, Inc. developed and patented methods to reduce this pulsed heating by a factor of fifteen. Small, helium refrigerators and cryo-coolers are now used. Along with savings in electric power, superconductivity allows operation at higher magnetic fields and greatly improves separation process efficiency. New designs offer enormous reductions in weight, size and capital cost as compared to older copper magnets. Application of this technology to minerals other than kaolin is emerging.

A trend towards the independent verification of sustainable development reporting and assessment using third party certification can be discerned in the global minerals industry. Various codes that provide for the third party assessment and certification of performance against a range of externally developed sustainability indicators are being adopted by minerals companies, and there is also considerable activity in the broader area of third party assurance. Using a sociological approach, this paper examines the reasons why third party certification schemes are appearing in the minerals industry to address sustainable development imperatives in preference to other forms of regulation, and considers the broader implications of this trend. Data are drawn from a series of qualitative, in-depth interviews conducted with some of the key players in the development and adoption of certification schemes in the minerals industry, with executive managers of a range of large mining corporations, with representatives of global non-governmental organizations that are active in mining issues, and with government officers responsible for the regulation of mining corporations in Australia. Factors responsible for the emergence of the new certification schemes include: increasing demands from stakeholders for greater credibility in reporting against sustainable development indicators; broader contextual factors including globalization and neoliberal policies; and issues relating to trust and risk. Using insights from our research, and the work of others in this field, we identify some of the critical features of a credible third party certification scheme, and note some of the challenges for the design and implementation of such schemes. We conclude by discussing some of the broader implications of third party certification as an emerging form of regulation in the minerals industry.

A positive pressure ventilation system, augmented by a dewatering well curtain and underground longhole drilling, provides effective ventilation and radon control at EXXON Minerals Company's Highland Underground Mine in the Southern Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Testing different types of bulkheads, sealants, and bleeder systems has led to improvements in the basic ventilation system. Continued testing of new or different materials and equipment is expected to lead to further improvement in the ventilation program. Effective training of both miners and supervisors is essential to maintaining and improving ventilation techniques. This paper addresses the ongoing ventilation program and experience to date at the Highland Uranium Mine.

Soda ash production in the United States during 1994 increased 4%, reaching 9.3 Mt (10.2 million st). That was the second highest production year. Domestic nameplate soda ash capacity is about 11 Mt (12 million st). Overall, the industry operated at about 85% of capacity. Some companies produced at 100% of capacity while others produced at below their design ratings. Although domestic soda ash consumption was slow during the first half of the year, third- and fourth-quarter sales increased, especially in the flat¬glass and fiberglass sectors. These two sectors increased because of greater demand for glass products in the automotive and construction industries. Soda ash sold for pulp caustic soda increased during 1994. This was due to higher prices for and reduced availability of electrolytic caustic soda. It is often preferred for pulp digestion because of its stronger alkalinity.

The Disjunctive Kriging (DK) procedure was developed to estimate ore recovery figures within a deposit/ domain from limited diamond drill hole (DDH) core assay data taken at the exploration stage. Local recovery figures include minable ore tonnage and ore grades within relatively small areas such as stopes or small panels on a pit bench, for a given cut-off grade. The grade and tonnage should be computed based on the true selective mining units, that is, the average grade distribution of selective mining units within a panel. Local recovery figures are critical information for economic and engineering feasibility studies before mine development, as well as for short-term mine planning for operating mines. This kind of information can be provided only by non-linear geostatistical methods including DK and the Multivariate Gaussian Approach (MG) (Journel, 2, Parker, et al, 5).

The hydrophobicity of oil shale was found to follow the sequence R-5 > Mahogany >> Eastern. Further, hydrophobicity was found to correlate with the total organic carbon (TOG) content, decreasing with increasing specific gravity of raw oil shale pieces. Differences in hydrophobicity from piece to piece indicate that gravity preconcentration would be much more effective for Western than for Eastern oil shales. Purified kerogen concentrates and low specific gravity fractions (<2.0) of raw Western oil shale samples show critical surface tension of wetting values of [y]c = ~35 mNm -1, and for a kerogen concentrate from an Eastern oil shale [y]c = ~46 mNm-l. This infers that dust from oil shale mining operations can be suppressed by surfactant solutions similar to those used to suppress coal dust.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. The LIFE-Environment Demonstration Project ?Treating Waste for Restoring Land Sustainability?(www.bangor.ac.uk/ies/TWIRLS/TWIRLS_home.htm), a project initiated by the University of Wales, Bangor, UK in which NAGREF is a partner, aims to demonstrate the effective use of industrial and municipal wastes for the remediation of post-industrial and degraded sites in urban and rural sites. Within the framework of this project, a schist quarry, which is located in a mountainous area near Athens and which has been exploited in the past for cement production, was chosen for bioremediation experiments in collaboration with the quarry owners, TITAN Cement Co. Three different areas within the quarry were selected representing 3 different topographies. These were a compacted, flat area with seasonal water logging (untreated control), a gently sloping, land formed area; and artificially created mounds of overburden rock material formed on the flat area. Compost produced from mixing municipal waste, green waste and digested sewage sludge at the recycling plant of the Association of Communities and Municipalities in the Attica Region (ACMAR), near Athens was used for nutrient amendment. Six replicates of three treatments were applied with varying compost application rates in order to examine the effect of the addition of organic matter in the establishment of suitable vegetation on the infertile schist material. Pine trees (Pinus halepensis Mill.), 4 per replicate, were pocket planted in a volume of 3 liters of schist or schist-compost mixture (1:2 and 2:1). Tree height, main stem diameter and branching were measured following planting and these measurements will be repeated annually to test hypotheses that compaction and water logging reduce Pine establishment by natural regeneration and that nutrient addition improves establishment of pine on schist waste. The availability of nutrients and variation in other soil physico-chemical parameters will also be studied in each treatment and related to plant growth. As a demonstration project, open days are planned on the site for the public and official bodies involved in municipal waste handling and other relevant areas. The aim of these will be to illustrate the effective re-use of waste for the sustainable restoration of post-industrial and degraded land.

This paper introduces a novel classification approach named the flotation classification approach which works by controlling interactions between particles. It differs considerably from the conventional classification processes operating on mechanical forces. In the present test, the micro-bubble flotation technology is grafted onto hydro-classification. Selective aggregation and dispersion of ultrafine particles are achieved through governing the interactions in the classification process. A series of laboratory classification tests for -44 pm kaolin have been conducted on a classification column. As a result, about 92 percent recovery for minus 2 pm size fraction Kaolin in the final product is obtained. In addition, two criteria for the classification are set up. Finally, a principle of classifying and controlling the interactions between particles is discussed in terms of surface thermodynamics and hydrodynamics.

Many of the wastes produced by modern steel plants are pulps or sludges containing significant concentrations of iron and displaying some ferromagnetic characteristics. These waste materials are often suited to treatment by magnetic cycloning to produce a high solids content underflow and a clean water overflow. Alternatively in the classification mode, the magnetic cyclone can produce a high iron underflow product for recycling by discarding fine non-magnetic material to the overflow. Results for the treatment of a variety of steel plant wastes in 5.0cm, 2.5cm and 1.25cm diameter cyclones, operating with and without an applied magnetic field, are presented. It is demonstrated that the magnetic cyclone increases solids recovery to the underflow product, especially at finer particle sizes and for higher solids content feed pulps.

The Y2K or "Millenium" bug is a tiny critter, comprising no more than two digits in a date field. This bug, like its' more lethal cousins of biological and computer virus fame, has the potential to derail the economy of the U.S. and the rest of world. Whatever the reader's perception, rest assured that you will be affected by Y2K along with every person in the civilized world. How did we get to this position? It is really quite simple. The Y2K problem is a creation of computer programmers who, in an effort to conserve valuable memory in the early days of computer development, used two digits as shorthand- to define the year in date sensitive applications. Instead of typing in "1982," our experts employed "82." They believed-correctly­that the problem of limited memory would be solved by technology and assumed (nasty word) that software would be modified to take care of any problems associated with a date rollover in the year 2000. Their assumption resulted in the problem facing us today.

A sensitive portion of Section U 6/3 of the Vienna, Austria subway system required construction of two single-track tunnels under a telecommunications facility, where strict ground settlement limitations had been set. Local geology, hydrology, and site constraints led to the decision to use the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) supplemented by compressed air and partial dewatering. In addition, ground freezing was used, as the tunnel would pass through alluvial layers beneath the facility, with a cover of as little as 1.5 m. Laboratory testing and two in situ test fields were used to collect frozen soil data so that the freezing scheme ensured minimal heaving magnitude.

The value of exported nonenergy minerals from the less-developed countries has increased substantially between 1970 and 1985, but their market share relative to world exports has remained stagnant. Of the top twenty minerals exporters, only four are developing countries. Production capacity in the developing countries is shown to be less sensitive to demand downturns than capacity in the developed countries. Two approaches to the management of cyclical minerals demand are given using examples from India and Papua New Guinea. The authors conclude that pro¬tective policies implemented by developing nations have, barring a few exceptions, relatively little impact on the chronic nonfuel minerals oversupply problem.

The kimberlites of northern Europe are related with a large crustal block having a northwest-southeast orientation. Kimberlites penetrate the Archean formations of crystalline basement, Late Proterozoic rocks, which are overlapped by Middle Carboniferous and younger deposits. The kimberlites bodies include pipes, dikes and sills of Upper Devonian age. Within the region, rocks of two magmatic series form diamond-bearing kimberlites. Aluminum rocks form a new type of diamond-bearing rock that is not found in other diamond provinces. Kimberlites of this region are characterized by highly developed deuteric alterations, a low content of associate minerals, the presence of two diamond generations and an increased content of jewelry-grade diamonds.

Rio Tinto&apos;s Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world. In 1988 they completed a $400 million project using a conveying system to transfer the ore from an in-pit crusher to the concentrator. The longest conveyor, C-6, was 17,352ft long and ran in a tunnel through the mountain-side to the concentrator. The belt was removed after 14+ years after carrying 700 million tons of 10 minus ore. The paper discusses the original G6 belt&apos;s performance and new splicing methods used to achieve a 60% dynamic splice efficiency on the replacement belt.

The new generation of computer environment provides mineral processing plants with convenient tools to store and retrieve or to analyze on-line process variable values as given along time by the various sensors installed in the plant. The paper describes the application of classical tools, such as time series analysis, to retrieve the hidden information contained is such data. The concepts used in single signal processing (autocorrelogram, power spectrum, ARIMA descriptors) and multi-signal processing (cross-correlogram, cross-spectrum) are briefly reviewed. Some examples are given to illustrate their application (sampling, data filtering, process behaviour prediction, process evaluation, data synchronisation). Examples are taken from mixing, flotation and leaching processes.

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size-distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short-term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability. Key words: SAG mills, Mill control, Fuzzy logic

The Bureau of Mines (USBM), US Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

While processing zinc cakes with application of Weltz-technology silver remains unrecovered and goes into clinker. In order to prevent it the elaboration of effective silver recovery methods from zinc cakes before their weltzing becomes necessary. A combined method of zinc cakes treatment with leaching and flotation in a closed water circuit has been worked out. The technological scheme envisages the use of sulphgydril collectors in combination and comprises a series of consecutive operations: leaching, filtration, precipitation(cementing) and flotation. Total silver recovery is approximately 94%. The technology elaborated has been realized in a project by which the construction of a new shop is under way now.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. Present production from PTFI’s DOZ Underground Block Cave Mine is approximately 40 thousand tonnes per day (ktpd). This paper describes the design process and recommended ventilation infrastructure necessary to expand the DOZ Mine reserves and to increase sustained daily production above 50 ktpd. The enlarged footprint will feature longer production panels of up to 650 m in length, more active draw points, a second large gyratory crusher, and additional men and mobile equipment. The increased ventilation capacity will be achieved through the development of new, dedicated ventilation drifts, and primary Underground exhaust fans.
