While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

Introduction The gold rush to the Canadian Klondike and then to the Alaskan gold camps is legend to Americans. The early years of the century also saw flourishing hard rock mining at the famous Treadwell and Alaska Juneau gold mines and the bonanza Kennecott copper mine. Over the last two decades, rich discoveries of copper, cobalt, zinc, lead, molybdenum, tin, and silver have furthered Alaska's reputation as a storehouse of US minerals. Alaska may also contain large commercial deposits of chromite, platinum, and nickel. Yet in 1984, with the exception of the Usibelli coal mine and several hundred small placer gold mines, Alaska's mineral potential remains largely undeveloped. Uncertain 70s The 1970s were years of uncertainty for the mining industry in Alaska. The discovery in 1968 of a huge reservoir of oil and natural gas in Prudhoe Bay brought the land claims of Alaska's natives to national attention and focused interest in Alaska's resource wealth. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANSCA) created the regional native corporations and granted them selection rights to some 178 000 km2 (44 million acres) of Alaska's 1.5 Gin' (375 million acres) - about 12% of the state's land area. The native land selection process would take years. During this time, the status of much of Alaska's land was in question. Additionally, section d(2) of ANSCA provided for the conversion of an undetermined amount of federal lands into conservation units. These consist of parks, scenic rivers, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. The debate over the d(2) lands was long and acrimonious. National conservation groups lobbied to include as much acreage as possible within restrictive classifications, regardless of its mineral or energy potential. The process was polarized into a preservation-versus-development struggle. To many Alaskans, what was at stake was the ability to develop a viable independent economy, rather than an ongoing role as economic wards of the federal government. Introduction The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of such scale is: "A hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water." The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem. The problem of scale in carbon strip circuits Carbon strip circuits present a particularly challenging scale inhibition problem. Many of the factors that tend to promote scaling are present in these systems. For example, carbon strip circuits are run at high temperatures and high pH levels and require long batch cycle times. Tortuous paths are encountered by the strip solution circulating through heat exchangers, pipes and elbows, causing transient pressure drops throughout the system. Severe conditions such as these cause the water to possess a high scaling potential and may lead to the breakdown of some of common types of scale inhibitors. Formation of scale Natural waters contain dissolved minerals and gases that promote scaling. One of the contained gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important factor in scale deposition. Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to yield carbonic acid according to the following reaction: [CO2 + H2O - H2CO3 (carbonic acid)] Carbonic acid rapidly dissociates to yield bicarbonate and carbonate ions depending on the pH of the system: [H2CO3 -s H+ + HCO-3 (pH range 6-10) HCO3 -a H+ + COO (pH range > 9)] In gold cyanidation processes, lime is added to raise the pH of the mill solution to 10 or above to promote cyanidation of the gold and to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) formation. Lime contributes both hydroxyl ions (OH--) and calcium ions (Ca++) to the solution. The normal scale forming reactions in mill water systems were described by Beasley (1973) as: [HCO-3 + OH -s C03 + H2O Ca++ + C03 -a CaCO3] Factor affecting scale deposition According to Linke's (1958) solubility tables, the solubility of calcium carbonate in carbon-dioxide free water is only 13 mg/dm3 (13 mg/L) at 25° C (77° F). Scale deposition occurs when the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions in the solution exceeds the solubility of calcium carbonate. This occurs, in most cases, when the water has undergone some chemical or physical change. Some typical changes that might occur that lead to scale deposition are discussed below. Temperature An increase in temperature can greatly increase the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Studies by Miller (1952) have indicated that calcium carbonate is less soluble at higher temperatures. Hence, high temperatures promote scaling. For this reason, scale is often noticed on heat exchangers, autoclaves and other high temperature surfaces. Pressure A decrease in pressure may lead to an increase in the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Fulford's (1967) work has shown that scale is more soluble at high pressures. Hence, scale is likely to be prevalent in pump suction lines, elbows, baffles and other areas that produce turbulence and subsequent pressure drops. Change in pH Calcium carbonate scale is pH dependent and tends to form more readily at high pH. Any event that causes an increase in pH, such as the introduction of lime or caustic, would tend to initiate scale formation. Since most gold recovery operations are run at a pH above 10, the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale is always great. The use of scale inhibitors to prevent calcium carbonate scale Many products are commercially available to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate scale. Some of the more effective types include phosphonates, as well as acrylate and maleate-based polymers and copolymers. Many of these products function by means of threshold

Contract required excavating 2,000 If of 14' horseshoe tunnel in rock, a 95' deep work shaft on shore, and a 50' deep intake shaft located in the middle of the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls. Large quantities of H2S were encountered in the range of 20 PPM with ventilation. Peak levels of 40 PPM were recorded. The original designed ventilation system required only a volume of 10,000 CFM to meet OSHA requirements. The volume of air was increased to 50,000 CFM to dilute the H2S to al- low workmen to work and comply with OSHA H2S action levels. The second phase of the tunnel consisted of placing 72" ID X 20 foot long concrete reinforced pipe in the tunnel. When the tunnel was holed through and both shafts were open, a substantial amount of work was required to take place in the shafts which eliminated the possibility of placing a bulkhead to secure proper ventilation. The ventilation team designed a jet system airlock. The design of this system was to bring fresh air down the work shaft in two duct systems; one 30" diameter and one 24" diameter. Following the excellent work of Jan Wolski (7th Mine Ventilation Symposium chapter 58) our design incorporated nozzles located approximately 100' in by the work shaft. The velocity of the 24" diameter duct was 6,365 FPMD2.2 MPH. The velocity of the 30" diameter duct was 6,117 FPMl69.5 MPH. Both systems were on blow and being that air expands at 3112 degrees per side this high velocity of air expanded and created an air bulk head through which men and the large sections of concrete pipe could be passed without any delay or additional cost to the project.

The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

A review of the geology and mineralogy of several of the better known hydrothermal platinum-group metal (PGM) deposits is undertaken. Along with new data from two recently discovered occurrences in Nevada, a number of common characteristics of these deposits are identified. Newly described PGM occurrences in Nevada are the abandoned Gibellini mine workings characterized by limestone-hosted hydrothermal Mn-V-Zn-Ni mineralization and the granite-hosted base-and precious-metal veins of the Gingerload claims.

Commercial lime plants in the United States and Canada are depicted in Figure 1. The sources of lime available to Nevada and bordering states are rather few. Chemstar Lime has plants at Apex, Nevada and Nelsen, Arizona. Continental Lime, Inc. has plants at Tacoma, Washington, Townsend, Montana and Delta, Utah. However, Continental Lime has a new rotary kiln installation underway near Wendover, Nevada. This plant is scheduled to come on stream in the fall of 1989.

Moisture requirements in the filter cake have been consistently met, eliminating the need for thermal drying after filtration. Operating data and Tube Press Filter are described herein.

The INRED process has been developed step by step by Boliden since 1972 at MEFOS, the Foundation for Metallurgical Research, at Lulea in Sweden. The demonstration - plant is number five in this series. The purpose of this plant, which has a nominal capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year of hot metal is to: 1) prove the process on a sufficiently large scale to provide the basis for construction of production plants, 2) test various kinds of raw materials on behalf of licensees, 3) train operators of the first production plant, 4) develop the process further for special applications.

SHELDON P. WIMPFEN The measure of the success of any mining operation is the size of the difference between sales realization and cost of product, including operating, sales, administra¬tive, capital and others. Evaluation of a mining project necessitates projecting costs and sales realization as accurately as possible. Possible variations in specific cost elements and sales prices must be considered. To accomplish this, project studies should include giving effect to possible fluctuations to determine the break¬even points with varying costs and prices. Development of cost data is never an easy task. Mining is characterized by a great variety of conditions which result in still more variables. Achieving realistic figures as of any specific time involves consideration of changes, which may be frequent, in labor-contract terms and equipment used, variations in working condi¬tions and mining practices, and changes in mineralization and metallurgy. The purchasing power of the dollar, which has been declining persistently, also affects the situation at any given time. The only thing that can be said of costs, with certainty, is that they will change. With this in mind, the "guideline" data in this section are offered for the use of the mining engineer. It was provided for the most part by representative companies, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged. In reviewing the tabu¬lations and other material it is of course necessary to remember that the data presented are valid only for the time periods specified, and will change with changing economic conditions in any other. 31.1-CAPITAL COST OF PLANTS Plant capital costs are set forth in Tables 31-6 and 31-7 by year of construction. To estimate capital cost of plants built in future years, various cost bases and indexes are utilized. The dispersion of oily collector has significant effect on the flotation recovery of ultrafine coal. Generally, reagent dispersion is accomplished by mechanical mixing and/or ultrasonic agitation, followed by direct addition of dispersed collector into the flotation cell. However, such dispersion and reagent addition techniques are invariably inadequate and non-selective. A new collector utilization technique involving gas phase transport of atomized collector has shown improved results when compared to conventional reagent addition techniques. This new technique involves atomization of the collector into the gas stream. Under these circumstances an aerosol is introduced into the flotation cell. Initially, the oil is dispersed within the gas phase (continuous with respect to oil) and the gas phase is dispersed within the pulp (continuous with respect to aerosol). In the flotation cell, the atomized oil droplets coalesce on the bubble's surface and create a de-facto oil-encapsulated bubble. This approach provides excellent dispersion, increases selectivity, and most significantly increases the flotation rate of ultrafine coal. Furthermore, atomization of collector/frother combinations yielded improved flotation yields and maintained near uniform froth levels which is a desirable feature in coal flotation. In addition to flotation experiments, microscopic examinations of the attachment of oil-coated bubbles at a coal surface were conducted by attachment-time and contact-angle measurements. The oil coated bubbles attach at significantly faster rates and with a higher contact angle than do oil free bubbles.

The Upper Diamond Fork Project, as part of the Central Utah Project Completion Act, conveys water six miles from the existing Sixth Water Aqueduct to the Diamond Fork Pipeline. During design, a Value Engineering team proposed a single-tunnel alignment that would be less destructive on the environment and might have a lower life cycle cost than the proposed design of two tunnels connected by two pipelines on steep hillsides. A decision was made to include this option in the bid process as a design-build alternative. The bid for this option was the lowest and a contract was awarded. During the TBM excavation a segment of tunnel wall caved in containing large quantities of water saturated with extremely high levels of hydrogen sul?de (H2S)gas (measured at 380 to 520 ppm in the air). The Central Utah Water Conservancy District (District) in consultation with Obayashi/Clyde (Contractor) quickly developed anew plan to finish the system by incorporating parts of the original tunnel/pipeline concept and re-bid the remainder of the project as a Phase 2 Design-Build contract.

In order to be able to design an adequate mine ventilation system it is necessary to understand how pollutant masses disperse into turbulent ventilation air streams. The mixing of gases and dusts with ventilating air, and dispersion of these pollutants in mine airways, are important flow or transfer problems. For the solution of such problems, the finite difference technique is often used. In this paper, numerical approximation schemes for the solution of the mass transfer problem have been developed using several explicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments using the concept of Root Mean Square error. The comparison of various schemes reveals that the explicit finite difference schemes analyzed here give more accurate results at lower velocities, though the results are dependent on the spatial and time steps considered. At higher velocities the schemes tends to oscillate about the analytical solution. INTRODUCTION In mining, most of the mine air pollutants, such as respirable dust, methane, blasting fumes and diesel exhaust, are produced at the mine face and in haulageways. Injection of any of these pollutants in the mine ventilating air causes disturbances of the equilibrium state of the pollutant concentration of the ventilating air. The mixing of these gases and dusts with the ventilating air are typical examples of mass transfer processes. Pollutants are diluted by the stream of ventilating air flow along airways and discharged into the outside atmosphere of the mine through a return shaft. The dispersions of these pollutants in mine airways are important flow or transfer problems. Knowledge about pollutant sources, emission and transport of these pollutants are essential for ventilation planning and design to ensure good engineering control over air quality, quantity, and environmental conditions. Modeling of mass transfer phenomena in mine ventilation is largely based on extensive studies of turbulent dispersion in wind tunnels and the lower atmosphere of the earth. The general approach in the formulation of models lies in the recognition that these mass transfer phenomena can be conceptualized as a flow problem that can be solved by the general application of Taylor's theory (1954) of turbulent flow and diffusion with modification appropriate static and dynamic parameters. If the face zone is initially contaminated by a pollutant over a long section (e.g. instantaneous exposure of large gas accumulation, rapid methane release etc.), the process of decontaminating the mine workings can be regarded as displacement and diffusion of the tailing edge of the cloud of contaminates in the form of a semi-infinite gas body, for which a one-dimensional mass transfer equation is represented by: [at + u • ax = Ex ex2 + f (x,t)(1.1)] In Eq. (1.1), the term [~~] is the rate of growth of the concentration in the differential element, while a [(5xx )] is the net gain of material due to convective transfer. The two terms balance the total loss of material due to turbulent dispersion that is represented by [Ex . 21] and f(x,t), the source term for the pollutant in the roadway. Several cases of mass transfer that occur in mining can be identified and modelled using the conservative volume element method. The governing equation, along with the associated boundary and initial conditions, source terms and their solutions are detailed elsewhere (Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1988, Devala, 1989). Only one mass transfer situation is presented (Figure 1) here for the present analysis. Mixed Evolution of Pollutant (multiple pulses) Typical examples of these situations are emission of pollutants from multiple diesel vehicles in the face area, and gas emission from standing pillars as well as from broken coal seam during coal cutting with a continuous miner. In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1,500 )fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high-velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced, allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to 1,600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

Ferromanganese slag, a product of the manganese industry, was characterized mineralogically. The slag, which contains high Mn values, was characterized using optical microscopy, XRD analysis and electron microscopy. No separate Mn-bearing oxide mineral phase was found. The slag is amorphous, and no crystalline phase was identified in the hulk sample by XRD, However, in. fine fractions, quartz was identified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of Mn, Si, Al and Ca in the matrix without the development of a mineral phase. Leaching experiments using H2SO4 were carried out to determine if Mn could be extracted from the slag. At room temperature, almost 100% of the manganese could be dissolved at a solid-liquid ratio o f 1:10 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The impurities could be precipitated by pH adjustment to produce a manganese sulfate solution suitable for the production of MnO2 or electrolytic Mn metal. Based on the laboratory-scale experiments, a suitable process is proposed to recover manganese values from the, ferromanganese slag.

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

This paper describes the leaching of gold with Geobrom® 3400 from a very rich (6.2 kg/tonne) black sand concentrate and its subsequent recovery by ion exchange resins and solvent extraction. The dissolution of gold from black sand ranged from 94 to 96%. Gold loadings and recoveries of nearly 100% were achieved by both ion exchange and solvent extraction methods. The kinetics and equilibrium of loading gold onto ion exchange resins and its elution from the resin were studied. The commercial ion exchange resins PAZ®- 4, DOVEX®- 21K, and Amberlite® XAD- 7, and Great Lakes Chemical experimental GLR-30 were evaluated in this work. Diethylene glycol dibutyl ether was used in all the solvent extraction work for gold recovery from Geobrom leach solution. The consumption of Geobrom was about 130 kg per tonne of the concentrate processed. Therefore, the cost of lixiviant to extract 3.11 x l0-2 kg of gold from the black sand was only about $1.00. Based on the electrochemical regeneration of bromine, the economics of bromine process vs. cyanidation were investigated.

The main scope of the present study is to investigate the suitability and sensitivity of the magnetic susceptibility as a pollution monitoring tool in urban areas. For this purpose, a municipal park located in the centre of Chania city, which may be affected by traffic and domestic heating pollution, was selected as the study area. In the context of the present work, magnetic susceptibility measurements were conducted in two phases. Surface soil samples were collected in 2006 from the area under investigation and they were analyzed in order to estimate the spatial distribution of the magnetic susceptibility. One year later, mapping of the magnetic susceptibility has been contacted in situ using Bartington MS2D and MS2F sensors. Additionally, soil samples were collected from selected positions in order to compare the values of the magnetic susceptibility with that estimated in 2006 research. Both investigations indicate high values of the magnetic susceptibility around the park near the roads and in a small area inside the park where a café is located.
