In this paper, numerical approximation schemes, for solution of the mass transfer problem in mine ventilation have been developed by using three implicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments, using the concept of Root Mean Square error. For implicit finite difference schemes, in general, the modified central difference scheme is better than the two other schemes at lower velocity. Also, at lower air velocities, implicit schemes underpredicted the concentration values. At higher air velocities, the Crank-Nicholson and Laasonen schemes provided better results than the Modified Central Difference scheme.

Abandoned mines in parts of the Black Hills of South Dakota have the potential for acid rock drainage. For this work, ten sites were examined on Black Hills National Forest land or on private land whose drainage could affect Forest Service land. Water samples from all the sites had pH values less than 6. Results of analyses from water samples and rock samples showed a correlation between metals content and pH. Acid-base accounting was used to determine acid drainage potential of the sites. One site (King of the West Mine) had a high potential for acid generation; fortunately, little or no surface runoff leaves the mine site. Six sites appeared to have moderate potential, including the Minnesota Ridge Mine, which currently is being remediated. Three of the sites had low acid drainage potential.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimise the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focussed on ore characterisation and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blastability indices as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model however it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both Brownfield and Greenfield projects on the PPRust operation.

Surfaces of metal sulfides react readily with selected constituents of environment. Two types of reaction products may form: (1) primary, chemisorbed and hydrophobic surface products or primary hydrophilic surface products, and (2) secondary reaction products -- produced during continued oxidation-reduction processes. For flotation, the chemisorbed surface product and the secondary reaction products, elemental sulfur or metal xanthates, must provide sufficient hydrophobicity of the surface to ensure particle-bubble attachment.

At the El Realito project, Sonora, Mexico, the Luz del Oro joint venture has recently inferred a geologic resource of 400 to 800 kt of 2.5 glt gold potentially present in gossans, breccias, and veins. El Realito, under investigation for a dump leach, open pit operation, is located in the Sun Antonio Mining District where gold and silver veins and gold placers have been exploited since Spanish colonial times.

Risk assessment, risk management, and engineering/economic feasibility analysis are presented as three effective, practical tools for decision making in the remediation of contaminated soils. Risk assessment is applied to evaluate the extent, magnitude and sources of contamination, to identify appropriate contaminants of concern (COCs). Risk management is then applied to identify the acceptable contaminant residual levels for the COCs. Finally, engineering/economic feasibility analysis is used to define the appropriate cost-effective remedial action and associated target contaminant action levels that will achieve the acceptable contaminant residual levels. A real site application of this decision making approach is presented. This site illustrates that through appropriate engineering, acceptable risk-based contaminant residual levels can be achieved with higher action levels.

Most ores and coals contain sulphide minerals such as pyrite, FeS2, the sulphur portion of which is a ready substrate for a variety of sulphur oxidizing bacteria. Although there are several bacteria capable of oxidizing sulphide minerals, the most often discussed culprit is Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.. Oxygen from the air slowly oxidizes pyrite into sulphuric acid, but T- ferrooxidans can increase this reaction rate several 100,000 times.

The current status of the technology leaves many questions unanswered and hence the choice of the best system to employ is open to discussion. Reasons are given for the choice of the reactor system to be built and operated by Davy McKee. The pilot plant has been designed to provide answers to a number of the questions posed by this technology.

Analysis of the structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community, consisting of the number of taxa and the relative distribution of total numbers, is a routine method of assessing the ecological quality of streams. Various multivariate statistical techniques, which assess the structural variability of the benthic macroinvertebrate community and the relationship of that variability with natural and anthropogenic environmental variables, have utility in separation of the various physical and chemical factors associated with impact. Multivariate methodology, while computationally complex is statistically rigorous and better integrates physical, chemical, and biological data for more synthetic interpretation. Using the multivariate analysis technique, canonical correspondence analysis, we have analyzed a number of sites in the upper Boulder River Basin, Montana to determine which are the important environmental variables associated with variation in community structure. The results of this analysis an integrated with more traditional analysis of community structure and incorporated in a risk analysis for the mediation of abandoned mines and mill sites within the watershed.

Accident prevention can be portrayed as a science that deals with facts and natural phenomena and must be dealt with in the same manner as any other operating problem. Safety at the Copper Queen Branch dates back to 1913 when a Safety Organization was started and rules formulated for underground mining. Since then the mining industry has made substantial progress in the elimination of accidents and when the Lavender Pit was started in 1951, it adopted the general plan in use at all Phelps Dodge properties. 4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

Hydraulic fracturing has gained in popularity in recent years as a way to determine the orientations and magnitudes of tectonic stresses. By augmenting conventional hydraulic fracturing measurements with detection and mapping of the microearthquakes induced by fracturing, we can supplement and independent1 y confirm information obtained from conventional analysis. Important information obtained from seismic monitoring includes: the state of stress of the rock, orientation and spacing of the major joint sets, and measurements of rock elastic parameters at locations distant from the wellbore. While conventional we1l 1ogging operations can provide information about several of these parameters, the zone of interrogation is usually limited to the immediate proximity of the borehole. The seismic waveforms of the microearthquakes contain a wealth of information about the rock in regions that are otherwise inaccessible for study. By reliably locating the hypocenters of many microearthquakes, we have inferred the joint patterns in the rock. We observed that microearthquake locations do not define a simple, thin, planar distribution, that the fault plane solutions are consistent with shear slippage, and that spectral analysis indicates that the source dimensions and slip along the faults are small. Hence we be1 ieve that the microearthquakes result from slip along preexisting joints, and not from tensile extension at the tip of the fracture. Orientations of the principal stresses can be estimated by using fault plane solutions of the larger microearthquakes. By using a joint earthquake location scheme, and/or calibrations with downhole detonators, rock velocities and heterogeneities thereof can be investigated in rock volumes that are far enough from the borehole to be representative of intrinsic rock properties.

Bacterial leaching is a mature technology and has been applied in six commercial plants with others in the design stage or under construction. Bacterial oxidation is a relatively inexpensive process which uses naturally occurring soil bacteria to assist in extraction of base and precious metals. Bacterial oxidation has ini­tially been applied for gold recovery but the technology is now being transferred to base metal leaching with processes already developed for copper, cobalt and nickel. Bacterial oxidation plants often have capital and operating cost advantages over competing technologies and do not need a highly skilled workforce. The most common species found in the conditions used for bacterial oxidation and bacterial leaching are Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. One common species other than Thiobaci!lus found in the commercial bacterial leach cultures is Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Mixed cultures of the three species named here have formed the basis of the technolo­gy applied in most of the commercial applications of bacterial leaching to date. These bacterial species already mentioned all belong in the classification of mesophiles and have an operating range from 20 to 43°C. One other culture, a moderate thermophile operating over the range 40 to 50°C, has been used in one commercial plant in Western Australia. Bacterial oxidation takes place in acidic solutions under aer­obic conditions. The oxidation reaction normally produces iron (II) in solution which is ultimately conve1ted into the iron (III) form. The pH value falls naturally as the sulphide minerals are oxidised and the starting pH value can fall as low as pH 0.6 as the oxidation reaction proceeds. This paper examines the impact of the technology selection and its application on the design, engineering and operation of a bacterial oxidation plant. The effect of the changes to these para­meters on the cost of the bacterial oxidation plant is discussed.

The utilization of high-sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of the 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal more attractive by offering the choice of taking the coal combustion and flue-gas desu furization products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of product disposed of can be minimized In this paper, several such systems are presented The favorable operating conditions of each system are determined in terms of distance and tonnage ranges. For a 90 kt/year (100 thousand stpy) operation, it is found that, up to a distance of 150 km (93 miles), transporting products by truck would be less expensive than using rail cars and intermodal containers. Also, a case study is given in which a cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving products from two Illinois utility plants. At 90 kt/year (100 thousand stpy) and a distance of 40 km (25 miles) between the power plant and the mine, it is found that truck transportation and under ground placement would cost $0.090/tkm ($0.131/st-mile) and $2.98/t ($2.70/ st), respectively.

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals. This paper makes an attempt to determine the most appropriate equation for mathematical interpretation of kinetics of the SASA mine rougher Pb - Zn flotation.
