In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

The ever-increasing power (and decreasing cost) of computers has opened up substantial oppor¬tunities for 'Vision'-based systems in both on-line and off-line control. This paper reviews image analysis applications in use at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) for: •blast and mill feed size monitoring; •AG/SAG mill model-based control; •mineral liberation; and •froth flotation control. The SPLIT™ image analysis system is being used to estimate muck pile and ROM feed sizings. AG/SAG mill feed sizing is being used in a dynamic model for mill control. A new generation mineral liberation analyzer has been developed with Philips Electron Optics. The Philips-JKMRC mineral liberation analyzer offers a substantial improvement in resolution and speed over previous developments. While on-line liberation control continues to be something of a pipe dream, measuring liberation "one shift behind" is now feasible. A robust instrument has been developed to measure flotation froth bubble size and velocity. The instrument also derives a parameter that allows different froth textures to be distinguished. The instrument has been used for on-line control in coal and sulfide flotation. For coal froth, an online ash estimate has been achieved at one site and is being tested at other sites. Overall, image analysis is finding many applications in mineral processing and control.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

"Quartz Dust is a major health hazard in underground works, wherever the ground contains quartz and depending on the chosen method of excavation. A research project initiated by the Swiss Tunnelling Society and realized by the Swiss Federal Institut of Technology, Zurich, established a correlation between the potential of quartz dust generation during excavation and well known geotechnical characteristics – the Cerchar Abrasivity Index CAI and the Uniaxial Compressive Strength UCS - of ten typical Swiss rocks. The results are at the center of a new guideline by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects on the requirements for early project stages regarding ventilation and logistics in function of the quartz dust related risk of the expected ground type of the project. The approach presented could be applied worldwide, contributing to more effective health protection as well as to better cost stability in underground works. CONTEXT Respirable quartz dust (aerodynamic diameter of particles < 10 micron) is universally recognized as a major workplace health hazard. Chronic bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer can be caused by excessive exposure to quartz dust, as has been proved by many medical studies. Therefore, the legislations of many nations specify a maximum workplace concentration (Maximale Arbeitsplatzkonzentration MAK, Occupational Exposure Level OEL). In Switzerland, for example, the Threshold Limit Value TLV for respirable Quartz or Crystalline Silica imposed by the Federal Committee on Exposure Levels (Grenzwertkommission) is 0.15mg/m3 air. Some nations refrain from establishing a OEL because of the carcinogenic nature of quartz."

Since the decade of the 1990s is nearly upon us, I have focused on what I see are the likely trends featured in new large underground coal mines 10 years from now. I do this from the vantage point of having been involved in the installation of large mines for more than twenty years. Little of the equipment resources we have available today was unknown when I entered the coal business in 1960. There were continuous miners, longwalls and diesel-powered equipment in Europe, monitoring systems, computers, heavy media separation systems, froth flotation and conveyors then as there are now. A substantial evolutionary process has occurred with these and other mining machines and processes. Some evolved only to die out, such as boring-type continuous miners; others, such as longwall systems, flourished. My intuition tells me that since there have been largely evolutionary rather than revolutionary developments in the near past, the same is true of the future, at least for the next 10 years. In other words, the elements of what are in the future are with US now. Some, such as computer-based applications, may evolve beyond our wildest dreams -but I doubt it.

In Part I of this paper we describe two techniques that were employed in the development of mathematical descriptions of the size reduction process which takes place in a ball mill. In Part II we show how the comminution model was imbedded in a process model to effect steady-state and dynamic simulation of a closed-circuit grinding operation. Increasing emphasis is being placed on development of approaches whereby the essential characteristics of a process can be succinctly represented in terms of a mathematical description of the relationships that exist among important process variables. This activity, commonly known as mathematical modeling, predates modern electronic computers: however, these computers with their tremendous computational capability have given new impetus to the whole field. Although the computer is quite helpful in the development of mathematical models, the real value to the engineer lies in the fact that computers represent such a powerful tool for simulating systems described by mathematical models. As a consequence, engineers may simulate and thereby study the behavior of complex. interacting, systems over a broad range of process variables and configurations once appropriate process models have been developed for the sequence of steps comprising the process.

History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

Introduction The gold rush to the Canadian Klondike and then to the Alaskan gold camps is legend to Americans. The early years of the century also saw flourishing hard rock mining at the famous Treadwell and Alaska Juneau gold mines and the bonanza Kennecott copper mine. Over the last two decades, rich discoveries of copper, cobalt, zinc, lead, molybdenum, tin, and silver have furthered Alaska&apos;s reputation as a storehouse of US minerals. Alaska may also contain large commercial deposits of chromite, platinum, and nickel. Yet in 1984, with the exception of the Usibelli coal mine and several hundred small placer gold mines, Alaska&apos;s mineral potential remains largely undeveloped. Uncertain 70s The 1970s were years of uncertainty for the mining industry in Alaska. The discovery in 1968 of a huge reservoir of oil and natural gas in Prudhoe Bay brought the land claims of Alaska&apos;s natives to national attention and focused interest in Alaska&apos;s resource wealth. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANSCA) created the regional native corporations and granted them selection rights to some 178 000 km2 (44 million acres) of Alaska&apos;s 1.5 Gin&apos; (375 million acres) - about 12% of the state&apos;s land area. The native land selection process would take years. During this time, the status of much of Alaska&apos;s land was in question. Additionally, section d(2) of ANSCA provided for the conversion of an undetermined amount of federal lands into conservation units. These consist of parks, scenic rivers, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. The debate over the d(2) lands was long and acrimonious. National conservation groups lobbied to include as much acreage as possible within restrictive classifications, regardless of its mineral or energy potential. The process was polarized into a preservation-versus-development struggle. To many Alaskans, what was at stake was the ability to develop a viable independent economy, rather than an ongoing role as economic wards of the federal government. Introduction The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of such scale is: "A hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water." The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem. The problem of scale in carbon strip circuits Carbon strip circuits present a particularly challenging scale inhibition problem. Many of the factors that tend to promote scaling are present in these systems. For example, carbon strip circuits are run at high temperatures and high pH levels and require long batch cycle times. Tortuous paths are encountered by the strip solution circulating through heat exchangers, pipes and elbows, causing transient pressure drops throughout the system. Severe conditions such as these cause the water to possess a high scaling potential and may lead to the breakdown of some of common types of scale inhibitors. Formation of scale Natural waters contain dissolved minerals and gases that promote scaling. One of the contained gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), is an important factor in scale deposition. Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to yield carbonic acid according to the following reaction: [CO2 + H2O - H2CO3 (carbonic acid)] Carbonic acid rapidly dissociates to yield bicarbonate and carbonate ions depending on the pH of the system: [H2CO3 -s H+ + HCO-3 (pH range 6-10) HCO3 -a H+ + COO (pH range > 9)] In gold cyanidation processes, lime is added to raise the pH of the mill solution to 10 or above to promote cyanidation of the gold and to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) formation. Lime contributes both hydroxyl ions (OH--) and calcium ions (Ca++) to the solution. The normal scale forming reactions in mill water systems were described by Beasley (1973) as: [HCO-3 + OH -s C03 + H2O Ca++ + C03 -a CaCO3] Factor affecting scale deposition According to Linke&apos;s (1958) solubility tables, the solubility of calcium carbonate in carbon-dioxide free water is only 13 mg/dm3 (13 mg/L) at 25° C (77° F). Scale deposition occurs when the concentration of calcium and carbonate ions in the solution exceeds the solubility of calcium carbonate. This occurs, in most cases, when the water has undergone some chemical or physical change. Some typical changes that might occur that lead to scale deposition are discussed below. Temperature An increase in temperature can greatly increase the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Studies by Miller (1952) have indicated that calcium carbonate is less soluble at higher temperatures. Hence, high temperatures promote scaling. For this reason, scale is often noticed on heat exchangers, autoclaves and other high temperature surfaces. Pressure A decrease in pressure may lead to an increase in the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale. Fulford&apos;s (1967) work has shown that scale is more soluble at high pressures. Hence, scale is likely to be prevalent in pump suction lines, elbows, baffles and other areas that produce turbulence and subsequent pressure drops. Change in pH Calcium carbonate scale is pH dependent and tends to form more readily at high pH. Any event that causes an increase in pH, such as the introduction of lime or caustic, would tend to initiate scale formation. Since most gold recovery operations are run at a pH above 10, the tendency to form calcium carbonate scale is always great. The use of scale inhibitors to prevent calcium carbonate scale Many products are commercially available to inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate scale. Some of the more effective types include phosphonates, as well as acrylate and maleate-based polymers and copolymers. Many of these products function by means of threshold

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

Recovery of galena and sphalerite from fine grained lead-zinc ores by flotation normally requires re-grinding to achieve economic recoveries at acceptable concentrate grades. Re-grinding aims to reduce the coarse valuable mineral particles to a size where they float more readily and to liberate the composite valuable particles so that the gangue in these composites does not dilute the concentrate. Besides changing particle size and liberation, re-grinding changes the surfaces of the minerals and thus may alter the rate that mineral particles of a given size and liberation float. A method was developed to apportion the total change in recovery after re-grinding between changes in size and liberation and changes in flotation rates. The flotation behaviour of minerals, before and after re-grinding, was measured by floating samples of plant streams under controlled conditions in a laboratory cell. Results from several industrial lead-zinc circuits indicated that the change in behaviour observed fell into three different categories. It is concluded that the method will indicate whether the focus for optimization of existing plant should be on comminution or flotation, and it will help determine the path for laboratory testing in designing new regrind circuits.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Diesel Controls Limited evaluated a new diesel emission control system on an underground mine vehicle. The system was a catalyzed ceramic wall-flow diesel particulate filter (CDPF) combined with an catalytic converter, or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). This paper describes the design and installation of the system on a load-haul-dump (LHD). The results of screening tests conducted by the USBM are also given. The screening tests were conducted to determine if the device&apos;s particulate collection efficiency, regeneration temperature, and effect on gaseous hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions changed over the period it was being used. The system was removed from the LHD and evaluated in the laboratory after operating for 308 and 1200 hours. After 308 hours of operation, laboratory testing revealed its particulate collection efficiency varied from 41.0 to 93.5 percent, depending on engine operating conditions. Its regeneration temperature was about 415° C. It reduced HC emissions by up to 97.6 percent, and CO by up to 95.0 percent. When tested in the laboratory after operating for 1200 hours on the vehicle, no significant change in performance was observed.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations in in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence collected from the Lucky Friday mine by US Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of previous case studies, demonstrated that in situ stress variations affect the [spatial] distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies. they are too expensive and, depending, on conditions, may be too difficult to collect. However, information on borehole and raise breakouts: deformation of mine openings: and patterns of seismicity, ground-control problems and rock-burst damage can be used to build a stress database. In conjunction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rockmass behavior, this database can then be used to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map could provide a means of anticipating patterns of mining-induced seismicity and. Thus, could be the basis for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has undertaken an under-ground transit project to extend public transportation service from downtown Boston to the South Boston Piers area. This new system, known as the Transit way, will connect existing subway lines to this area which is comprised of approximately 300 acres, in light of the potential for 21 million square feet of development by 2010. This system includes construction of a concrete immersed tube tunnel crossing of Fort Point Channel. The crossing will be accomplished in the highly congested setting of down-town Boston and will be located just to the north of the famous Boston Tea Party ship exhibit and amid major Central Artery Construction activity. The most recent concrete tube constructed in the United States was in 1962. The Fort Point Channel Crossing will employ current design and construction methods commonly utilized in the Netherlands, Australia, Hong Kong and elsewhere. This paper will present the design philosophy, planning, and evaluation of alternative crossing methods which led to the selection of the concrete immersed tube tunnel and construction techniques envisioned for this particular application.

Mine valuation is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary process by which the economic viability of an old, existing, or new mining property or venture is determined. The problems associated with arriving at a representative and accurate value for a mining property are complex and numerous, and the procedures utilized in determining these values vary from simple, back-of-envelope calculations to sophisticated mathematical manipulations requiring computer modeling and analysis. Regardless of the complexity or the degree of sophistication associated with any particular project, the evaluation process must ultimately provide management with two basic types of information. First, the evaluation process should indicate whether or not the mining project is economically viable after careful consideration of all engineering, environmental, geologic, and other variables pertaining to the project. Second, the evaluation process should provide management in- formation on the relative attractiveness of the project when compared to other alternatives. In some cases, it may be extremely difficult to supply this information for a project directly. Nonetheless, the evaluation process should and must present all information necessary in a format which can be incorporated into the decision-making process as expeditiously as possible.

Doyashiki Concentrator in Hanaoka mine of Dowa Mining Co., Ltd. started the operation in 1943, treating the ore mainly from Doyashiki ore deposits. After the cessation of mining of Doyashiki ore body in 1973, Doyashiki concentrator began to treat the ore from Fukazawa mine instead in the same year, and furthermore the ore from Ezuri mine In 1979. Currently Doyashiki concentrator treats 30,000 tons of ore per month from both mines. The ore treated is complex sulfide ore, called "Kuroko" (black ore), and the principal minerals contained in the ore are chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and barite, accompanied by bornite, tetrahedrite, tennantite, covellite, stromeyerite, argentite, polybasite, pearcite, and electrum. The Principal gangue minerals are quartz, gypsum and clay. The grade of the feed to the concentrator averages 0.9 p/t Au, 110 g/t Ag, 1.1 %Cu, 2.8 %Pb, 9.2 %Zn, 5.0 % Pyrite-S and 13% BaS04. The feed is, after washing and two-stage crushing, ground to 88% minus 200 mesh in a rod mill and ball mills with cyclone classifiers, and five concentrates are recovered by flotation. Primarily copper-lead bulk concentrate is recovered by sulfurous acid-lime flotation method, and then from the bulk concentrate copper concentrate is floated by hot pulp flotation method, sinks being lead concentrate. Zinc concentrate is recovered from the tailing of copper-lead bulk flotation, pyrite concentrate from zinc flotation tailing and barite concentrate from pyrite flotation tailing. The final tailing is sent to the dam.

While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

Contract required excavating 2,000 If of 14&apos; horseshoe tunnel in rock, a 95&apos; deep work shaft on shore, and a 50&apos; deep intake shaft located in the middle of the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls. Large quantities of H2S were encountered in the range of 20 PPM with ventilation. Peak levels of 40 PPM were recorded. The original designed ventilation system required only a volume of 10,000 CFM to meet OSHA requirements. The volume of air was increased to 50,000 CFM to dilute the H2S to al- low workmen to work and comply with OSHA H2S action levels. The second phase of the tunnel consisted of placing 72" ID X 20 foot long concrete reinforced pipe in the tunnel. When the tunnel was holed through and both shafts were open, a substantial amount of work was required to take place in the shafts which eliminated the possibility of placing a bulkhead to secure proper ventilation. The ventilation team designed a jet system airlock. The design of this system was to bring fresh air down the work shaft in two duct systems; one 30" diameter and one 24" diameter. Following the excellent work of Jan Wolski (7th Mine Ventilation Symposium chapter 58) our design incorporated nozzles located approximately 100&apos; in by the work shaft. The velocity of the 24" diameter duct was 6,365 FPMD2.2 MPH. The velocity of the 30" diameter duct was 6,117 FPMl69.5 MPH. Both systems were on blow and being that air expands at 3112 degrees per side this high velocity of air expanded and created an air bulk head through which men and the large sections of concrete pipe could be passed without any delay or additional cost to the project.

Acid rain legislation included in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 caused a great deal of uncertainty regarding the price, source and production quantities of coal supplied to the eastern coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward. South American coals move into the northern markets. States are proposing legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries. Some utilities question the long-term availability of eastern compliance coal. Major coal producers must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place. Several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves, while others have invested in technology to compete as a low-cost producer. Legislation "Acid rain." This is a topic that was debated within the scientific, environmental and industrial communities for years. Those discussions resulted in a large outlay for the federal National Acid Precipitation Assessment Project (NAPAP), which was then ignored. Acid rain then became the subject of a "60 Minutes" broadcast that debunked the acid rain theory, supporting the NAPAP study conclusions. In the final outcome, however, acid rain was the driver for the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.
