For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Center of the concept is the "NFN Lake District." The development concept aims to provide the agricultural industry with alternative means of income, while protecting wildlife and the ecological balance as well as preserving the social und cultural system and enhance the safety against flooding from the river Rhine. The mining industry contributes their coordination of obligation concerning reclamation and recultivation of the already existing individual projects. While designing the landscape components and establishing the infrastructure for the different tasks, the production of gravel and sand is yield as a by product. The result is a long term perspective for region and industry."

Several of the larger copper projects recently built have included a molybdenum byproduct circuit as part of the overall project due to the favorable molybdenum market conditions and overall economic contribution to the project. This paper provides a summary of moly plant flotation practices across a number of both recent projects and historical ones. Modern Molybdenum flotation flowsheets predominantly incorporate self-aspirated cells and forced air cells with nitrogen addition. The paper provides insight into the process considerations, capital and operating costs associated with both of the cell types. It also reviews metallurgical aspects and important safety aspects. Other aspects including instrumentation and degree of automation are also discussed along with overall plant design.

Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

King County (Seattle, WA) is on a monumental task of building the new Brightwater System complete with a new treatment plant, three main conveyance tunnels, a new outfall into Puget Sound and other ancillary works. This paper will describe the first conveyance tunnel, Brightwater East currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor that is scheduled for completion in early 2010. The project located in Bothell, WA (north of Seattle) is in both King and Snohomish Counties. It was the first of the major tunnel projects that was scheduled by King County for the Brightwater System. The East Contract consists of the following major elements: 14,000 ft of 19'-2' EPBTBM mined tunnel using 16'-8' ID bolted, gasketed precast concrete segments for a primary liner; installing and encasing 14,200 ft each of 48', 66', 27', 84' in diameter steel pipes inside the tunnel along with three runs of fiberoptic cable; 2,430 ft of 72' in diameter microtunnel including three caisson shafts and associated structures; one Intercepting Structure (IS) shell to mine from that is 74 ft deep and 74 ft finished in diameter with 130 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab and final concrete wall lining; one Influent Pump Station shell (IPS) 83 ft deep, twin 77 ft inside diameter cells, with 160 ft deep slurry diaphragm walls, tremie slab, and final lining; two short 12 ft in diameter inter-shaft connector tunnels; one extraction shaft 40 ft deep by 40 ft wide and 140 ft long for connection to the new treatment plant piping.

One would be hard pressed to find another project as complex as this one given its configuration, the variety of issues to address and the required construction techniques. Contract C710 is currently under construction as part of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail, connecting downtown Seattle with Sea-Tac Airport. The paper describes the construction-to-date of the deep mined station under Beacon Hill using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This deep “binocular” station is being mined through some of the most challenging soft ground conditions in the USA. The excavated volume of the station is approximately 60,000 cy (46,000 m3) and the station comprises a variety of geometries and cross sections ranging from 235 sf (22 m2) up to 1,670 sf (155 m2). This underground complex includes platform, concourse, cross-passage and emergency ventilation tunnels together with station egress and ventilation shafts. Various excavation sequences are in use for the different tunnels including the twin-sidewall drifts for the impressive45 ft (13.7 m) wide by 42 ft ( 12.8 m) high concourse cross adits. This station has two train platforms approximately 165 feet (50m) below the surface. This station, constructed in highly variable glacial deposits including water bearing sands and silts approximately 50 ft below multiple perched water tables in an urban setting, creates a very unique and challenging situation. "The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

In medium- to high-grade metamorphic terrains such as found in New York City(NYC), rock mass texture and mineralogy are important factors in predicting TBM penetration destiny. Integration of data from over two decades of traditional field and tunnel mapping suggest that hard-rock TBM penetration in the NYC area depends upon textural, mineralogic, and structural control. The bedrock of NYC consists of many different lithologic units of varying age, composition, texture, and metamorphic grade including many varieties of intrusive rock. In addition, brittle faults of numerous orientations cut the polydeformed crystalline bedrock, producing zones of highly fractured and disturbed ground and high water inflows. Pre-bid compilation of published bedrock data, drill core analysis by geologists to establish lithologic and mineralogic trends, integrated surface geologic mapping along a proposed alignment, and targeted petrographic and geotechnical investigations to characterize the rock mass conditions together constitute an important prelude to successful subsurface bidding and tunneling. A carefully planned program of as-built geological mapping, structural analysis, fracture class mapping, and monitoring of machine performance data provide important information for adjusting to changed conditions. In complex terrains, a clear understanding of the structural geology of any proposed tunnel line is the simplest and most cost-effective method to mitigate losses encountered during TBM tunneling.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

Tele-remote operation of production equipment from surface will change the design criteria for underground mines. And for ventilation, with machine operators on surface, conventional planning to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Natural Resources Canada with industrial partners are investigating what will be the new environmental design criteria. Additional complications include new mining equipment being designed without standard services and mines’ desire to eliminate conventional auxiliary ventilation. Findings to date show the cooling of equipment’s hydraulic systems to be the most demanding element, especially in dead-ends and when stationary. Consequently, revised ventilation based heat control strategies for equipment are being developed for the automated mine of the future.

According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

Innovations in communications and real-time information systems are providing industry opportunities to improve profitability. Real-time operating data is collected from equipment across a site or even several sites into a central server for secure PC and PDA-based Internet access. This paper includes discussion of how operating staff can use wireless devices to see equipment and processing data from anywhere throughout the mines and concentrators, and how management can view results from multiple mines, all in real time. Additional opportunities enabled through the remote access by equipment vendors or mining consultants is also presented, as well as an overview of typical benefits and current installations.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. The total length of the project is approximately 1900 meters consisting of four main project divisions, which are described below, going from south to north. 1.Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) area, 2.Southern approach roadways to the South Portals (250 meters), including the South Rock Cut,

The Zuni Mountains, located in Cibola County, New Mexico is an uplifted area that exposes Proterozoic igneous and metamorphic rocks overlain by Permian and younger sediments. Sedimentary-hosted Cu deposits and fluorite veins in the district have recorded production, but other deposits exist. Proterozoic ultramafic rocks may host Ni and PGE. A recent regional stream sediment survey collected 76 samples as part of an exploration geochemistry course at New Mexico Tech with the goal of assessing the critical minerals potential of the district. Whole rock and trace element chemistry of the sediment samples (<2 mm) show a variety of critical minerals possibly worthy of future targeted exploration including up to 700 ppm As, 2100 ppm Ba, 26 ppm Bi, 25 ppm Co, 640 ppm Cu, 145 ppm Ni, 110 ppm Sb, 170 ppm V, and 500 ppm Zr. Positive correlation between Bi, As, Cu, and Sb suggest that these critical minerals are found together within copper veins related to shear zones in the district. Samples collected from streams that drained outcrop of mafic and ultramafic rocks were found to generally contain more Ni, Co, and V. Samples elevated in Ni will be reanalyzed for PGE.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. Atlas Copco Wagner launched its ST1010 Scooptram load haul dumper. The ST1010 replaces the company’s Wagner ST-1000 Scooptram. The improvements to the Wagner ST1010 include increased reliability, ease of maintenance and driver comfort or ergonomics. The ST1010 has been redesigned and has added several new features and options not offered in the earlier model. These include anew boom design with side stops. Heavy reinforcements to the bogie offer better protection against the harsh working conditions in underground mining and tunneling. An auto lube system has also been added as has paint-on grip tread to reduce slips and falls during maintenance checks or repair work. Other features include a heavy-duty, auxiliary-fan motor, an isolated transverter, remote diagnostic pressure taps, a bolt-on battery box, raised air-intake, improved fuel-filter access for easier maintenance, larger wear-bars around the engine tub, and smaller, higher output batteries

INTRODUCTION Construction of the 3,600,000 kilowatt Third Powerplant at Grand Coulee Dam started in late summer 1967 approximately one year after authorization by Congress. The project was made possible by a treaty with Canada providing for cooperative development of the Columbia River which was signed in 1961 and ratified in 1964. Description of the Work The existing Grand Coulee power complex consisted of a dam and two powerplants with a switchyard serving each plant, one on each bank of the river. See Fig. 1. The switching facilities were connected to transformers at the powerplants by overhead 230-kilovolt and 115-kilovolt tie circuit conductors. [ ]

The formation of copper thio-complexes in sulfide solutions has been recognized for many years and the measured solubilities of certain copper sulfide minerals attributed to these complexes. Attempts to model this system have proposed either copper(I) or copper(II) thio-complexes, and these have been incorporated into computer programs for generating stability diagrams for the copper-sulfur-water system in order to delineate the region where the reductive dissolution of copper sulfide minerals is likely. In this paper it is proposed that the dissolution of copper from both ore bodies and sulfide tailings can be explained by the formation of the cupro-thio-complexes under anaerobic conditions. Stability diagrams are presented to depict the region and extent of the solubility.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.
