High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

Statistical exploration uses statistical methods to identify targets for more detailed investigation by estimating the odds of occurrence of mineral deposits. The study area which contains the possible targets may be as large as 1 000 000 km2 or as small as 100 km2. Results are presented in terms of a probability index for the existence of a deposit or, more precisely, in terms of expected dollar value for a unit area, or even in terms of number, size, and grade of deposits remaining to be discovered. Typically, selected geological, geophysical, or geochemical information is systematically quantified and statistically analyzed by using the computer in order to distinguish between geological environments on the basis of the probability that they contain undiscovered deposits of a specific type. All possible targets are compared with one another by using information on areas known to contain deposits. The information on the known areas is either a set of control data consisting of values for the same parameters as are quantified for the entire study area, or it embodies a specific model for the occurrence of a given deposit type. Examples of both procedures will be discussed in this chapter.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

A ground-water flow model was developed to simulate the postmining recharge rate from precipitation at the Belle Ayr surface coal mine, which is located in the Powder River Basin near Gillette, WY Wyoming state regulations require that reclaimed lands should provide a rate of recharge that approximates the premining rate. Steady-state calibration and transient simulations showed that the postmining recharge rate through spoil is at least 50 mm (2 in.) per year, exceeding the original infiltration rate of 4 mm (0.16 in.) per year to shallow overburden aquifers. Major reasons for the increase include the flat topography of the reclaimed areas and the decreased spoil density. It is expected that the backfill will disaggregate and settle over time, eventually resulting in a nearly constant recharge rate that is less than 50 mm (2 in.) per year but still somewhat greater than the premining rate.

INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. As a nation, we have been known as perhaps the most wasteful in history. From the perspective of engineers and builders on the other hand, planned obsolescence and demolition did beneficially pave way for growth and provided environment for new businesses. Recent economic recession and intense competition from overseas, however, have drastically changed the economics. The high cost of capital and the demise of indiscriminate plant expansion have totally altered the way we conduct our business and run our operations. As a response to increasing demands for better efficiency with little or no funding available, everyone is forced to make do and do better with whatever little he has. Today it nay not be an exaggeration to state that modification of existing facilities may have finally emerged as a way of life. This paper will outline examples of how several companies have effectively modified existing facilities to do more and do it efficiently without having to demolish everything and/or to spend a fortune.

The cost of remediation often drives the selection of the preferred remedial alternative at hazardous waste sites. The use of probabilistic cost/risk analyses can aid in predicting costs of remedial alternatives. Three types of information are discussed in performing cost/risk analyses: (1) data on the quantity of contamination versus the contaminant concentration; (2) unit costs of remediation for the remedial alternatives; and (3) risk to contaminant concentration relationships. Cost/risk evaluations are performed on a site-by-site basis, to account for combined risks of different contaminants and differences in quantity to be remediated versus contaminant concentration. The cost/risk analysis produces a graph of risk versus cost for each of the remedial alternatives. These costs are then compared to facilitate selection of a preferred alternative. An example of comparison of alternatives is illustrated for a historic coal gasification site.

The Bacterial Oxidation (BIOX®) process for the pre-treatment of refractory ores for gold recovery developed by Genmin, the mining division of Gencor, has been operating successfully at the Fairview mine since October 1986. The continuous operation of a pilot plant at Genmin Process Research has resulted in further process developments to improve plant operating efficiencies. These new developments which include a higher solids content of the pulp feed to BIOX®, lower retention times, higher operating temperatures, lower power utilization for oxygen dispersion .and reduced nutrient addition have all been successfully implemented on the Fairview plant.lt has furthermore been confirmed that the arsenic precipitate formed in the neutralization of effluent solutions complies to the United States of America EPA standards. Continuous cyanidation pilot plant work conducted on BIOX® product has indicated that cyanide consumption can be drastically decreased if a continuous flowsheet is implemented in preference to a batch leaching system.

During the past 20 years, the seismic refraction method has been used for depth to bedrock investigations. Its usefulness, however, has been recognized mainly in engineering applications, for instance in connection with the construction of power stations and in dam site investigations etc. Although some knowledge of the depth to bedrock can be of advantage in many other fields, the use of the conventional 12 or 24 channel seismic refraction equipment has been very limited, especially in ore prospecting and mining operations. The reasons for this are mainly the rather complicated operation of the instruments and the high costs. A conventional seismic equipment requires a crew of six men, a highly trained operator and an interpreter. Furthermore, the use of explosives can under certain conditions be undesirable (naighbourhood of houses, damage to agricultural areas etc.). Since 1957 a new one-channel seismograph, 'constructed by Geophysical Specialties Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been in use and this instrument simplifies operations and reduces their costs considerably.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology which results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoids) have been implicated as important biochemical mediators of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dub1 could influence the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500°C and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TxB2) levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 and TxB2 production were markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE2 and TxB2 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in PGE2 and TxB2 production compared to control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 1100°C resulted in eicosanoid levels which were not significantly different from control. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production.

Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. Simulation has established itself as an accepted tool for the design and optimization of complex minerals processing plants. This paper addresses the use of simulation as a tool for the design and optimization of carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants. The complex, interactive nature of CIP/CIL plants makes detailed experimentation an expensive and time consuming approach to CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization. This paper discusses a simulation-based software tool that can make the process of CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization much more cost effective. Many of the issues and problems pertaining to the use of simulation for CIP/CIL design and operation are generic. Thus, this paper also attempts to highlight generic issues that must be solved before simulation will become a more widely used design and optimization tool. Requirements for the application of simulation for CIP/CIL plant design and optimization are highlighted. Similar problems and issues can be identified for most mineral processing plants.

In most circumstances, the traditional methods of. ore reserve estimation for large undulating sedimentary deposits, such as coal and iron formations, do not allow the accurate prediction of grade for mining blocks. The problem is Particularly accute when the mining blocks are small with respect to the thickness of the geological zones in the deposit, and when there are significant grade changes between the foot-wall and hanging-wall of these zones. A simple geostatistical model has been developed, which takes into account the grade changes not only in the direction of the geological strata, but also in the direction normal to these strata. The genesis of sedimentary deposits and the resulting geological properties of these deposits were considered in the development of the model. The model has been successfully applied to the evaluation of a large coal deposit. Eventhough some practical difficulties have been encountered, for example when part of a geological zone was missing or had not been sampled, these difficulties have been .resolved. Both the theory and its practical application are presented in this paper.

Column flotation cells continue to gain acceptance in the coal industry for the treatment of high-ash streams containing clay slimes. Unfortunately, some industrial installations have failed to meet expectations due to improper scale-up, incorrect operation and poor ancillary circuit design. To overcome these problems, case studies have been conducted to fully define the capabilities of column cells for coal applications. These data have been used to develop generic engineering guidelines for column circuit design and operation. An economic analysis has also been conducted to illustrate the importance of key capital cost considerations. These analyses indicate that column cells are significantly more expensive than conventional machines, although this difference can be greatly reduced through the installation of very large-diameter columns.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Caro's Acid (H2so5) were used to treat cyanide containjng effluents. Significant reagent savings were achieved by using Caro's Acid. Weak Acid Dissociable (W.A.D.) cyanides were removed at near stoichiometric levels of Caro's Acid. Hydrogen Peroxide showed poorer efficiency in the presence of W.A.D. cyanide complexes, resulting in higher consumption rates. At the East Sullivan site, pore-waters underlying a wood waste cover that prevents sulfide oxidation are characterized by an anoxic environment, abundance of dissolved organic substrates, and near neutral pHs. Such conditions favor sulfate reduction and base metals precipitation as sulfides, as well as carbonate-metal precipitation. Pore-water composition from 1992 to 1998 shows a significant Fe2+ decrease. Therefore, the restoration strategy of that site capitalizes on these alkaline and reductive properties. Since 1998, a novel treatment of acid effluents, based on the recirculation of water discharged around the impoundment through the organic cover, is tested on the site. Available data gathered in 1998 and 1999 shows that the pH of recirculated water flowing within the wood waste cover increases by 2 to 4 units and that Fe,, concentrations decrease by a factor greater than 6.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained for the design and development of mine water control systems. Geologic, hydrologic, geophysical, biological, and chemical data must be gathered for use during all stages of mine development. Models allow the geohydrologist to use these data to predict the amount of ground-water inflow, the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, equipment needs, and dewatering schedules. Stratigraphic and lithologic changes, faults, recharge and discharge areas, and aquifer parameters should be incorporated into the model to design and develop an effective mine water control system.

"Microstructure stabilized crushed rock salt is a newly developed backfill material for infrastructural openings in HAW repositories. The motivation for this research is based on the fact that the microstructure stabilized crushed rock salt is considered to be superior to the currently used crushed rock salt. The avoiding of settlements with a simultaneous 100% backfilling of openings, early stabilization of the geological barrier and low permeability (< 10-14 m²) are the main improvements. With the newly developed backfill material, the gap between the crushed rock salt and the saliniferous composite backfill materials is closed. Due to the minimized amount of a binding agent, the material will still be easy to handle like a bulk material, yet guarantees close to 100 % backfill success without any settlements. This is accomplished with a long-term stable re-mineralization that is formed by the components of the binding agent. INTRODUCTION The permanent storage of high active waste in underground geological formations (HAW-repository) is the labored method in Germany as well as internationally. Experiences have been made over the last decades, e.g. in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (USA) and the mines Morsleben and Asse (Germany). For this purpose salt formations are preferred as host rock due to the adequate heat conductivity, creep capability, and low permeability. In order to maintain the low permeability of the host rock and to avoid any contact of the stored waste with the biosphere, the formation of flow paths has to be prevented. The cavities which have been mined for the purpose of waste storage have to be backfilled with material that is alike to the host rock. Therefore crushed rock salt is considered as an appropriate backfill material. Crushed rock salt is a bulk material that is produced by mining saliniferous formations. This material is mainly used in underground repositories as a dry backfill that is brought into the cavities by the use of mechanical (loading machine, slinger machine or scraper) or pneumatic energy (pneumatic stowing). In Germany it is intended to use dry crushed rock salt with a maximal grain diameter < 64 mm for backfill in a future repository in saliniferous formations. With this method applied, the porosity of the backfill is up to 35 % [1]."

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned --to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health --NIOSH --the beneficiaries of each other&apos;s findings. Unquestionably, there are lines of separation. The main responsibility of the agency I represent, MSHA, is enforcement of the nation&apos;s mine safety and health laws. But we also have an additional responsibility and that is to coordinate and give priority to research in a never-ending hunt for answers.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer and distribution of DPM in the mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Studied using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study will be presented.
