The purpose of developing this system is to monitor the operating status of the fully mechanized mining system in order to raise it's reliability. The completely mechanized coal mining system is a complex dynamic system, involving many sub-systems. It is the key of the mining process as well as a connected system composed of each working procedure. Any hitch in breaking, loading or transporting will interrupt the mining process. The analyses of the operating data has proved that the reasons causing the interruption of the extracting processes mainly come from the inner of coal face. Hence, after the installation of the MINOS system in England, the delays of belt conveyor sub-system were reduced. But the production increment was not as much as expected.

In a recently developed, long-term open pit production planning model, the optimal plan is found by exhaustively searching through nested pits of maximum metal contents. A more efficient, dynamic programming (DP) based search algorithm now replaces the exhaustive search algorithm that requires prohibitively long execution time in real life cases. The logic and formulation of the newly developed search algorithm are illustrated through a small hypothetical case. An actual gold deposit is treated to demonstrate that the algorithm does indeed find the optimal production plan among all possible plans. A comparison, in terms of computational savings between the two algorithms, is also given.

Significant economic deposits (> 4,000 ha) of heavy mineral sands (ilmenite, rutile and zircon) were discovered in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Virginia and North Carolina in 1989. The majority of these lands support highly productive row crop agriculture, and the development of restoration protocols that would return these lands to agricultural use was deemed to be critical to the long-term sustainability of mining operations. Virginia Tech worked closely with all stakeholders to develop appropriate restoration protocols and to coordinate their implementation. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc., and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical, and social issues. Return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production has been complicated by lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and limited topsoil return. Approximately 150 ha of land are in various phases of reclamation, and approximately 25 ha have been released back to landowners to date. Currently, the reclaimed pits are returned to pasture vegetation, but return to more intensive agricultural production practices may be possible as soil reconstruction procedures are improved over time.

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

Background of Erie Mining Company Erie Mining Company, managed by Pickands Mather & Co., is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in the United States. The plant is located at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, sixty-five miles north of Duluth on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range. Taconite Harbor, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, is the location of its Power Plant and shipping facilities. (Figure 1) Even though the plant commenced operation in September, 1957, its true be-ginning can be traced back to 1931 when Pickands Mather, in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, began investi-gating the possibilities of processing low grade ores. In 1940, Erie Mining , Company was formed. During the early and middle 1940's, laboratory and pilot plant research was proven to a point where a preliminary plant was deemed feasible and built in 1948. This plant had an annual capacity of 203,200 t (200,000 long tons) per year and, until mid-1952, was the only taconite plant in existence using commercial-size equipment. During this period, ownership of Erie Mining Company was expanded to include Interlake, Inc. and The Steel Company of Canada, Limited. In 1953, authorization was obtained from the owners to build a 7.62 M t (7.5 M long tons) per year plant at a cost in excess of $300,000,000.

Starting with rutile, containing more than 55% TiO2 and of the proper particle size, the commercial production of titanium tetrachloride via fluidized bed chlorination is relatively very simple and economical. As compared to shaft chlorination, it operates at a much higher capacity for given sizing of equipment, and appears more foolproof, requiring less attention. Operating data were obtained on a 53" diameter fluidized bed chlorinator using Australian rutile and petroleum coke of controlled particle size. Production rates varied from 20 to 50 tons of crude TIC14 per day for a campaign extending over one month. Close to theoretical yields and efficiencies were obtained from the viewpoint of chlorine and/or rutile consumption. Details of important equipment design, critical operating conditions and pertinent results are described.

INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. Gas wells have often intersected mining resources, but unconventional shale well drilling has more recently challenged mines to balance the risk of interaction due to higher pressures and larger quantities of gas. Full extraction mining, such as the longwall method, induces ground movement that may influence the casings if wells are drilled within the mining area. The possibility of a casing shear would lead to the risk of unplanned gas migration into the mine. This has the potential to quickly overcome the ventilation system and reach the explosive range which, if ignited, can have catastrophic consequences on the health and safety of underground workers. The utilization of network software to model mine ventilation is a common practice in the mining industry as a predictive tool for planning and monitoring and can assist with a well breach scenario over a large mining area. This work focuses on a well breach in between two longwall panels after second panel mining with gas entering primarily through the gobs of the adjacent longwall panels. Applying the network software Ventsim, a gob zone and ventilation network were created to better understand the distribution of gas within the mine and the limitations and effectiveness of a ventilation system. The model shows both a transient flow simulation and steady state concentrations throughout the mine ventilation system. Using a standard Pittsburgh coal seam longwall ventilation scheme, we find that the system can dilute a significant inflow of up to 700 cfm of methane.

The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

ShovelSense is a complete solution for bulk ore sorting at the mine face that combines robust shovel bucket mounted X-ray fluorescence sensors, with real-time material classification, fleet management integration and supporting cloud-based data infrastructure, to ensure each truck always goes to the right destination. Correct truck destinations are a challenge in many current mining settings because the material classification of a truck, which is the key input into the truck destination, is often based on estimates at block resolution (~20x20x15m), with limited adjustment for blast movement and mixing. In this contribution, we present a geostatistical, data driven approach to estimate the potential value of bulk ore sorting at the mine-face for seven open pit mines. The approach is premised on the assumption that truck loads within blocks follow a simple gamma distribution. Standard ore control data from the seven mines have been used to estimate the potential bulk sorting value at these operations and ShovelSense-integrated dispatch datasets have been used to validate these estimates for specific benches on which ShovelSense operated. ShovelSense results validate the ore control data-based value predictions and show how at mine-face bulk ore sorting value varies between distinct deposit types. In general, deposit types that have higher bulk ore grade contrasts, display more potential ShovelSense value. The manuscript concludes with the limitations and opportunities of applying the proposed value estimation approach to evaluate at mine-face bulk ore sorting opportunities for open pit operations.

This paper presents research on the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment used in surface coal mining. Environmental impact was assessed through the measurement of equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. In this study, exhaust emission refers to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation refers to fine particles (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Sound level refers to the sound pressure level at different distances from the equipment. Modeling of the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment was conducted using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research was a part of a broader project involving the development of a software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and ecofriendly mining systems, sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). This research may assist mining professionals in quantifying the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment, and developing strategies for reducing the overall impact of such equipment in surface mining.

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

ABSTRACT Distinct patterns are identified in the associations, distributions, and levels of concentration of the silica minerals, boehmite, aluminous goethite, and phosphate minerals in the bauxite deposits of Jamaica. These result from syngenetic and diagenetic reactions associated with post-bauxitization tectonic and associated activities. Three basic types of bauxite are identified, viz., Jamaica-1 (< 3.0% boehmite), Jamaica-2 (> 3.0% boehmite and 30-80% of the iron as aluminous goethites), and Jamaica-3 (> 3.0% boehmite and > 90% of the iron as aluminous goethites). The Jamaica-1 type has a mean value of < 2% boehmite as A1203, while this level in the Jamaica-2 type is usually about 3.5%, and > 4% in the Jamaica-3 type. Similar discrete associations were found for the species and concentrations of aluminous goethite and phosphate minerals. The process and geological implications of these are discussed.

A lot of work is in progress to improve copper recovery by leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning (L-SX-EW). At Outokumpu the focus of attention is on SX equipment development as a result of which a new mixing-settling technology, the Vertical Smooth Flow (VSF) has been introduced. Using helical stirrers in the VSF mixers a more gentle and uniform contacting can be obtained than in the mixing compartments of the low-profile design. The benefits of Outokumpu&apos;s new approach are an essential decrease in organic losses and in aqueous in organic entrainments. Separate pumping using a smoothly pre-contacting "Dispersion Overflow Pump" (DOP) is a key feature of the VSF design. The scale-up of this pump as well as the VSF mixers are shown to follow simple mathematical relationships which also have been confirmed by full scale experiments.

Pulmonary responses to coal mine dust exposure were investigated by analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage specimens from non-smoking coal miners (n-12, mean age-43 ± 2 years, mean underground exposure-17 ± 2 years) and from non-smoking normal volunteers (n-18, mean age-43 ± 2 years). Spirometric and diffusion capacity indices were monitored as part of a physical exam. Lavage was performed in a subsegment of the right middle lobe by instillation of 200 ml of warmed saline solution in 50 ml aliquots and recovery by gentle suction. Specimens were centrifuged at 500g for 5 minutes at 2°C. Total and differential cell counts were recorded. Secretion of oxidants measured by chemiluminescence, surface morphology (spreading and ruffling), and lymphocyte parameters were determined. Lavage fluid was analyzed for the presence and quantity of acute phase reactants and immunoglobulins. Pulmonary function measurements as well as recovered lavage volume, total lavagable cells, and differential cell counts were similar in both miners and controls. Both resting and phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated chemiluminescence were also similar in miners and controls. In contrast, particle-stimulated chemiluminescence was significantly decreased in the alveolar macrophages from the miners (48% of control values). Morphometric analysis of scanning electron micrographs indicate that phagocyte surface spreading was similar in miners and controls. However, surface ruffling was 127% greater in the miners compared to controls. Lymphocyte subpopulations were similar in miners and controls. Protein analysis of the lavage fluid revealed lower total protein content in the lavage fluid of miners. However, the concentration of albumin, IgG, and IgA were similar in miners and controls. We conclude that most indices were normal in underground miners working under the current dust standard of 2 mg/m3. The decrease in particlestimulated chemiluminescence and the increase in surface ruffling in miners may suggest the beginnings of particle overload and activation of the macrophages. In addition, a decrease in total protein was noted in lavage fluid from miners.

Formalized technical audits for mining machinery during manufacturing are a fairly new concept to the North American mining industry. Although used extensively elsewhere, especially in Australia, the concept of independent auditing of machinery design and manufacturing has been slow to gain acceptance in the United States and Canada. Simply stated, a technical audit is an independent, third-party review of all or specific portions of machinery design, manufacturing and assembly to verify compliance with purchase specifications and suitability of the machinery for the specified application. If specified correctly, the useful life of different kinds of structural and mechanical components can be extended beyond normally accepted usage. There is no reason why, if properly designed and built for the application, major structural components on mining machinery cannot be made to last for 20 years before being rebuilt. Also, gearing can be made to routinely last for 15 years.

The introduction of biotechnological principles in hydrometallurgy has created new opportunities and challenges for the industry of mineral processing. During the 1950&apos;s and 608s, the mining wastes and unused complex mineral resources have been successfully treated in bacterial assisted heap and dump leaching processes, especially for the production of copper and uranium. The economic viability of bio- leaching technology lead to its world-wide acceptance by the mining industries. During the 1970&apos;s this technology grew into a more structured discipline which is called "biohydrometallurgy". Currently, bioleaching techniques are ready to be used, in addition to copper and uranium, for the extraction of cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold and silver from diverse mineral resources and for the desulfurization of certain coals. However, in a foreseeable future the biohydrometallurgical processes may be applied also for the treatment of high- grade ores and mineral concentrates using native and/or genetically engineered microorganisms.

A new approach has been developed that is capable of ascertaining the ore component that is responsible for the preg­robbing of pregnant pulps. Many gold mines are currently treating ores containing a component that is detrimental to the recovery of gold, in that they "preg-rob" the pregnant pulp by adsorption of some of the dissolved gold. The identity of the preg-robbing component in this type of ore has been the subject of considerable debate over a lengthy period, th various suggestions including amorphous carbon, chlonte, chalcopyrite and layered silicates, such as the phyllosilicate minerals pyrophyllite, kaolinite, phlogopite and illite. A means is now available to identify and characterize the preg-robber in gold ores. This new approach consists of contacting the ore with a synthetic aurocyanide solution, identifying the mineral grains by optical microscopy and analysing each grain individually using high-sensitivity electron microprobe analysis. The approach is exemplified in this initial study by identifying the preg-robbing component in an active sample of gold-bearing shale to be an amorphous carbonaceous phase consisting of discrete particles of about 5 µm diameter interspersed with shale particles and agglomerated into grains of up to 100 µm diameter. Microanalysis of these grains as well as other mineral particles revealed that the gold content of some of the carbonaceous grains was close to 7000 g,lt, with no gold being detected in any of the other mineral phases that were found to be present (e.g. quartz, chlorite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, etc). Bulk analysis of the sample for carbon and gold confirmed that gold loadings of around 7000 g,/t would be expected if all of the gold were adsorbed onto the carbonaceous component. The carbonaceous constituent is probably also responsible for the anomalously high surface area measured for the material. It probably acts in a similar fashion to activated carbon, and the correct choice of organic blinding agent will decrease the extent of preg-robbing by lowering the activity of the material for gold, without causing any downstream problems such as fouling of the activated carbon used for gold recovery

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone.
