INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. INTRODUCTION Thermal dryers have been utilized for reducing moisture of bituminous coal since the late 1930's. Since that time, numerous changes in the coal industry have motivated advances in thermal drying technology. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes that occurred to dryer design and focus on current practices of fine coal drying. The major topics discussed in this paper are: - Early Thermal Dryer Design and Evolution - Current Drying System Design and Associated Components - Current Economics of Fine Coal Thermal Drying - Future Markets and Design Considerations EARLY THERMAL DRYER DESIGN AND EVOLUTION Background The practice of drying fine coal with heated air has been performed for more than one half century. Throughout that period, both Metallurgical and Steam coal producers have used this method for reducing the surf ace moisture content of their fine plant products. During the late 1930's and early 19401s, vibrating bed and flash dryers were used to per- form the drying duties. Closed water circuits and vacuum filtration had not yet been integrated into process circuitry and centrifugal dryers were in their early stages of development. During that same period, changes in mining practices were reshaping the distribution of coal to our processing facilities. Plants originally designed for the purpose of processing coarser fractions of coal were being burdened with additional quantities of fine coal. Those plants, unable to recover fine coal, would reject these solids to plant bleed. The higher incidences of stream pollution that resulted from these events prompted clean stream legislation and the need for new, more efficient fine coal recovery circuits. The coal processing industry responded to these needs by integrating closed water circuits and filtration into circuits. The fine coal filter cakes recovered exhibited poor handling characteristics by themselves and often required further dewatering to improve their characteristics. Flash dryers at that time were being used to dry the coarser products. For those facilities operating flash dryers, the solution to this new problem appeared to be simple. The filter cake was combined with the coarser (-1/4") coal and then introduced to the flash drying column for drying. The filter cakes, however, presented significant problems for the flash drying systems. Heavy lumps of filter cake could not be dispersed and conveyed by the rising hot air and as a result would settle out in the bottom of the column. This material, known as "drop-out", would then accumulate and require further handling. The solution to this problem was not an easy one. Sophisticated mixing equipment was employed to condition the feed to the dryers. As attempts to minimize drop-out with this approach failed, the only recourse was to collect the material with conveying systems and recycle it back to the plant or dispose of it. The additional costs of handling this material reduced the attractiveness of the flash systems and opened the door for the development of a new, more cost effective coal drying system. Due to the nature of the problems experienced by the flash systems, fluid bed systems were considered. Fluid bed dryers were being used in other industries at that time but had no operating history in the coal industry. Dorr-Oliver transferred technology from other industries and built the first fluid bed drying system for fine coal.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

"Since 1994 the Bureau of Reclamation has used risk analysis to evaluate dams. Risk considers both the likelihood of failure and the expected consequences should failure occur. Risk analysis relies on the detailed formulation and critical analysis of all possible potential failure modes. Potential failure modes are formulated by describing the sequence of events that must occur to result in failure, where failure is defined as the uncontrolled release of the impounded reservoir. Failure occurs in response to loadings such as water seepage through a dam (static forces), shaking from an earthquake (dynamic forces), sudden flood inflows (hydrologic forces), or accidental overfilling (operational errors). Reclamation has applied risk analysis methods to inactive and abandoned mines to evaluate tailings dams and flooded underground mines. Case histories of potential failure mode analysis as applied to mine impounded water illustrates what critical technical information is needed to determine if failure is likely, what the consequences of failure are likely to be, and what are the highest risks that should be addressed first. INTRODUCTION Impounded water, and high water content wastes, at mining and industrial processing sites are potential threats to public safety and the environment. Recent failures such as the TVA Kingston flyash impoundment failure in Tennessee in 2008 (5.4 million yd3 released), the Mt Poly Tailings Dam failure in British Columbia in 2014 (5.8 million yd3 released), and the Smarco Fundao Tailings Dam failure in Brazil in 2015 (78 million yd3 released) has renewed attention to this issue. Potential risks from impounded water at mining and industrial sites originates not only from tailing dams, but also from water in process ponds and conveyance pipelines, sediment retention dams, water retention dams, mine pit lakes, and flooded underground mine workings. Conventional water retaining dams also have a record of failure. Notable examples of failure include Vajont Dam in Italy in 1963 (2,600 lives lost), Banqiao and Shimantan Dams in China in 1975 (171,000 lives lost), and Machhu-II Dam in India (10,000 lives lost). After the 1976 Teton Dam failure in Idaho, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) established a Dam Safety Program. By 1984 the agency developed and began using risk analysis methods. Reclamation operates and maintains an inventory of hundreds of aging dams which were designed and constructed over a period of one hundred years. Many of these facilities were constructed using engineering design and construction methods which would not be considered good practice according to present day standards. Diligent observational monitoring, detailed site investigations, and the application of risk evaluation to the BOR dam inventory has identified many deficiencies resulting in significant demands on available funding for remediation efforts. The application of risk analysis has allowed the agency to rank sites by risk. By giving priority of remedial efforts to high risk sites, significant improvements to dam safety have been achieved. BOR has also applied risk analysis to evaluate and reclaim inactive and abandoned mining and industrial sites. The application of risk analysis methods in the mining industry is not new, the methodology was transferred to the mining industry more than 15 years ago as discussed in ICOLD Bulleting 121 (ICOLD, 2001), yet failures persist. This paper is meant to convey the lessons learned from BOR’s use of risk analyses in its work on mine sites."

This paper addresses the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from the Republic of South Africa. Forty-four major producing or developing operations were evaluated. The analyses present estimates concerning 1) total refined gold potentially available from demonstrated resources, 2) annual production potential into the next century, 3) long-term weighted average total costs for underground mine production and surface waste reprocessing, 4) the expected annual decrease in gold production, and 5) the ability of other market economy countries to compensate for the anticipated decline in South African gold output. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the worldwide availability of gold and silver from primary precious metal operations and as a byproduct of base metal production.

The importance of mineralogical and chemical characterization of fine particles in the fields of mineral and metallurgical processing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on electron beam analysis techniques including electron diffraction and energy dispersive analysis with special reference to the scanning trans- mission electron microscope. The correct choice of instrument depending upon particle size, composition and nature of sample is stressed and the analytica1 capabilities of different types of instruments are evaluated. Recent applications of electron beam equipment to processing problems are presented and the paper concludes with a review of new developments in the fields of surface analysis and micro-diffraction.

Ground Freezing was used for excavation support and groundwater control of a 12.8m (42-foot) diameter, 61m (200-foot) deep drop shaft for the South Bay Ocean Outfall Tunnel in San Diego, California. Approximately half way through the excavation, excessive groundwater inflows from the base of the shaft resulted in suspension of excavation and evaluation of the frozen earth wall. This paper discusses the forensic methods used to identify the zone where groundwater intrusion occurred and the methods associated with evaluating zones of high groundwater velocity. The use of remedial grouting and localized liquid nitrogen injection are discussed and evaluated. Concepts of frozen shaft design are discussed, including a new method for permitting the launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine through the frozen earth wall and associated freeze pipes.

Generally, production planning is concerned with the best use of fixed resources to determine a production schedule for one or more production units supplying one or more markets. Production scheduling determines when each production unit will be used and its production level. However, the production scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of existing or new production units and processing facilities. Normally, mine location allows only a limited choice; processing plant types and locations are considerably more flexible. This paper presents a generalized multiperiod MIP model as an aid in determining the mine production schedule and the processing plant types and location to satisfy multiple markets. A brief description of MIP and how it has been applied in the mineral and other industries is discussed. A complete description of the model with an application to a coal preparation plant system is presented.

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials, and consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium (V). Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, Xray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 weight percent V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples, calcium carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the Vbearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

The sandstone type Devladivske uranium deposit is located within the limits of Eocene pale-ovalley filled with alluvial sediments. Mineralization with uranium content up to 0.1% forms several ore beds divided by redox barriers. In the period 1962-1983 the deposit has been exploited over an area of 918000m2 by in situ leaching (ISL) using drillholes with a depth between 35 and 100m. During mining operation about 200,000 t of H2SO4, 6,300 t of HNO3, and 15,000 t of NH4NO3, have been pumped in the ore body. In 1983, the groundwater pollution aureole had a length of 4.5 km and a width of 400-600 m. There is a hydraulic connection between the uranium-bearing aquifer and both the upper and lower ones. The technological solutions used for ISL caused partial contamination of these horizons. After mining completion, dilution of the residual technological solutions with "pure" natural waters took place through gaps in impermeable sediments between aquifer horizons. Calculation of self-purification process kinetics shows that the sulfate ion pollution aureole will disappear approximately after 120-150 years at a distance up to 2.0-2.5 km from the western margin of the deposit. This means that there is no risk for contamination of the river Saksagan? that flows at a distance of 17km from the deposit.

Optimisation of many oxide gold processing facilities, in most cases, either does not really take place or if it does take place it happens too late or takes too long. This is unf01tunate as extra profits and early cash flows are lost, in new projects, and/or may not be realised at all in others. The situation is easily avoid­ed by ensuring that the plant optimisation happens immediately following commissioning or for an established operation simply 'biting the bullet' and making it happen immediately as a 'better late than never' decision. This type of optimisation requires intense undiluted focus on each and every problem or restriction that contributes to reduced plant performance or bottlenecks, without letting go, until the predetermined outcome is produced. Thus a dedicated person with specific quantative goals is required for these tasks. Methodology and strategies for optimi­sation are discussed and numerous examples presented. The secret of successful heap leaching is discussed.

Four Ca-bentonitic clays from Alabama were evaluated for use in Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) or Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer suspensions. The viscosity and gel strength of suspensions prepared with different proportions of a Western bentonite clay and sodium exchanged Alabama clays, were measured as a function of clay content and dispersant concentration. The results obtained suggested that three of the Alabama Ca-bentonites would replace about 40% of the more expensive Western bentonite in UAN and DAP fertilizer suspensions. The performance of the Na-modified clays, prepared according to the TVA soda ash method, was as good or even better than those observed for the Mg-, Na/Mg-or K-modified clays. The TVA clay modification procedure appears to be reliable and cost effective.

Shafts are critical components of the mine ventilation systems and contribute significantly to the mine ventilation pressure. Estimation of shaft pressure losses is an important aspect of mine ventilation planning and shaft frictional pressure losses are extensively studies. Shock losses contributed by shaft buntons are estimated using the interference factor model developed half a century ago. This study aims to develop a better performing prediction model for shaft buntons using state of the art experiment and numerical data, and machine learning techniques. Results show that the present prediction model is performing poorly, and the prediction performance can be improved by incorporating additional predictor variables. The Artificial Neural Network standardized Machine Learning model developed in this study is able to predict the shaft bunton shock loss with high accuracy (R2 = 0.956).

The case history, which is the subject of this paper, involves the expansion of a lime plant in Texas. The major new production unit is to be a 545.45 tonne per day coal fired rotary kiln. Auxiliary facilities include additional quarry haulage equipment, modifications to the crushing plant, a hydrator, storage facilities, and a loading system. The existing plant consists of a high calcium limestone quarry, two coal fired rotary and 10 gas fired shaft kilns, nth crushing, screening, stockpiling, hydrating, storing and loading facilities. The proposed modification would increase quarry volume from 545,000 tonnes per year to 805,000 tonnes per year. The plan also includes the addition of dolomitic lime to the product line which requires the purchase and handling of 186,000 tonnes of screened, washed dolomite yearly. A decision to undertake such an expansion was previously a simple and straight forward process. Such a decision now faces a major and complicating obstacle which can delay the project, raise the expected cost, or prevent it entirely.

INTRODUCTION In most cases, the design of an underground mine is based upon the premise that the ground either will cave or will be stable. This chapter concerns the design of a mine in ground that will cave readily or with some as¬sistance, such as by long-hole drilling and blasting. Some of the more widely used caving systems of mining are panel caving, block caving, sublevel caving, and large pillar recovery. Some of the less widely used systems are glory-hole, top slicing, and induction caving. Al¬though the common practice of pillar robbing is not usually considered to be a caving system, this subject will be treated as a part of this chapter. BASICS OF CAVING Caving systems are most successful in ground that will cave in sizes that will flow through openings and grizzlies, and will easily load in cars or on belts for haul¬age. The ground most likely to cave well is highly frac¬tured and contains breaks, flaws, or other discontinui¬ties that form planes of weakness. Also, caving action can be greatly enhanced if the host rock itself is low in compressive, shear, and tensile strength. Ideally, a cav¬ing system of mining is best employed when the criteria for caving is a feature of the ore body and the develop¬ment drifts, haulageways, and drawpoints can be mined in a highly competent rock beneath the mineralized zone. However, the development is often in the same, or similar, fractured rock and the openings require sub¬stantial artificial support to assure stability. Several clues can be assembled to identify potential caving ground; however, for borderline cases, no sure method has been devised to date. The diamond-drill cores taken for exploration can provide an excellent clue provided drilling is performed carefully by experienced drillers. For example, if the ground is cored in such a manner that the breaks in the core are caused more by failure of the rock than by whipping core barrels, plugged drill bits, or other drilling causes, and the intact core lengths are consistently long [say, 0.6 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft) of unbroken core], there is little reason to believe the ground will cave without considerable as¬sistance. This is especially true for rocks with compres¬sive strengths above 34.5 MPa (5000 psi) and tensile strengths above 2.1 MPa (300 psi). On the other hand, if core recovery is low (below 80%) and the recovered ore is broken in small pieces and the breaks are along obvious weaknesses in the rock, the chances are excel¬lent that the ground will cave. This is true even when the rock between the defects has high compressive and tensile strength. Another clue has already been mentioned, that is, the measurement of the physical properties of the rock and the natural planes of weakness or defects in the rock. The planes of weakness in the rock can often be detected from outcrops, cores, or other exposures of the rock under consideration. Some rock types are known to be strong and will sustain large, unsupported open¬ings and would be difficult to cave intentionally. Yet the same rock type can also contain unbonded or weak planes of weakness or fractures, and in these locations the rock would undoubtedly cave with little assistance. Therefore, although the inherent strength of the rock is a factor in caving, the natural defects in the rock are more often the deciding factor. DESIGN CONCEPTS For the most part, the design of openings for caving ground is a problem of the interaction of openings over a relatively large area of the mine. To illustrate, Fig. 1 is a simplified section of a series of openings along the grizzly level or draw level of a block caving or panel caving development, and above this opening is a simpli¬fied section of a room-and-pillar arrangement on the undercut level. At this stage of the development, the stresses around the openings on the grizzly level are only moderately influenced by the openings on the undercut level and vice versa. Therefore, the stresses around the openings are approximated by the stresses around single or multiple openings in rock, the values of which are de¬scribed in the literature (Obert, Duvall, and Merrill, 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). Once the pillars on the undercut level are blasted (Fig. 2), the situation changes abruptly. The undercut opening (prior to caving) now can be approximated as an ovaloidal opening above the grizzly drifts and this opening tends to shield the vertical stress field. As the caved stage is drawn the stope approximates a much larger rectangular or square opening filled with rock, and if the rock is not sustaining a major portion of the stress field, this opening can be considered (for en¬gineering purposes) to be empty and the stresses that interact between the larger and the smaller openings take on a totally new perspective (see Fig. 3). Next, let the material cave to the surface, and let the caving ma¬terial sustain some stress, but much less than if the ma¬terial were intact. This condition is similar to a soft inclusion in a rigid body and has been treated in the literature (for example, Donnell, 1941). During the past twenty years, numerous advances have been made in the technologies used to pretreat sulfidic refractory gold ores. These advances have included improved equipment design, increased gold recoveries, and reduced operating and capital costs. More recently, treatment of refractory gold ores has primarily been accomplished by pressure oxidation (POX), roasting, chlorine oxidation, or biooxidation. In addition to improving the time-proven processes of pressure oxidation and roasting, new and innovative approaches to biooxidation pretreatment of both concentrates and whole ores have been developed. Selecting the appropriate biooxidation technology depends on the nature of the refractoriness in the ore, economic gold recovery, plant design operating parameters (such as desired tonnage), site climatic conditions, and operating and capital costs, as well as several other deciding factors. The objective of this paper is to outline the biooxidation processes and technologies currently available for the recovery of gold from refractory sulfidic ores, to discuss the critical factors that affect plant design and operation, and to provide the metallurgist with a practical guide to choosing the appropriate biooxidation technology for a particular ore or concentrate.

Two methods used to measure the exposure of mine workers to diesel exhaust particulate were compared. One method was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota's Particle Technology Laboratory. The method which was originally developed for use in coal mines is a size selective sampling technique. The other method uses an “ashing" approach to assess the exposure to diesel particulate. This second method is based on the principles of sampling according to the ACGIH respirable dust sampling criteria and the use of a silver membrane filter as collection substrate. Because a silver membrane filter is used, both respirable combustible dust (diesel particulate) and respirable silica can be measured from one sample. The comparison study took place in a Canadian lead-zinc mine during tests which were primarily designed to evaluate the gaseous and particulate emissions characteristics of new diesel engine technology. The study has shown that under the test conditions encountered, some differences were observed between the results as obtained by the two methods. These differences seem to depend on the characteristics of the respirable dust found in the work- place, i.e., size and composition. The impact, on sampling and analysis of diesel particulate, of the proposed guideline (ACGIH) for a TLV® of 0.15 mq/m3 is discussed briefly.

As a followup to a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from a Sun Sparcstation-based worker-scheduling system of the mine-management support system to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, including their availability and work priorities during a shift. The system can optimally allocate manpower on a work shift and can delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software, including enhancements made to the original system, are described in detail.

A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

The Rio Piedras Alignment Section 7 of the Tren Urbano is currently being constructed beneath a historic commercial section of San Juan. Different portions of the section are being constructed using open cut, cut-and-cover, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM), and as tacked drift mined support system. The combination of complex geology, low ground cover, and several innovative construction methods present many challenges to the ground control program. Mining and construction sequences were first developed to minimize ground movements and risk of damage to structures. A unique compensation-grouting program was developed to improve the ground, limit settlement, and recover settlements incurred due to mining.
