The Rio Piedras Alignment Section 7 of the Tren Urbano is currently being constructed beneath a historic commercial section of San Juan. Different portions of the section are being constructed using open cut, cut-and-cover, New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM), and as tacked drift mined support system. The combination of complex geology, low ground cover, and several innovative construction methods present many challenges to the ground control program. Mining and construction sequences were first developed to minimize ground movements and risk of damage to structures. A unique compensation-grouting program was developed to improve the ground, limit settlement, and recover settlements incurred due to mining.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. "Flotation is regarded as the best available method of upgrading minerals and coal fines. However, its efficiency deteriorates rapidly with decreasing particle size. Further, ultrafine concentrates are difficult to be dewatered economically, forcing companies to discard part of the ultrafine materials to impoundments. To overcome these problems, a new method of separating and simultaneously dewatering ultrafine particles has been developed. Following extensive laboratory-scale test work, the process, known as hydrophobic-hydrophilic separation (HHS), has been tested successfully in continuous operations at proof-of-concept (POC)- and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the HHS process is capable of producing high quality clean coal with high recoveries and low moistures. INTRODUCTION Coal preparation plants are designed with up to four parallel processing circuits for treating coarse (> 12 mm), intermediate (12x1 mm) small (1x0.15 mm), and fine (<0.15 mm) particles. The plus 0.15 mm fractions can be effectively cleaned efficiently with gravity separation methods (Wills, 2006). At present, the only commercially viable option for cleaning the finest fraction is froth flotation (Yoon et al., 1999). In flotation, air is dispersed in the form of small air bubbles in a tank in which coal fines are suspended. The small air bubbles selectively collect the hydrophobic coal particles and float to the surface, forming a froth phase which overflows into a launder. As is well known, ultrafine coal particles of less than 30-50 µm are difficult to be collected by the air bubbles, resulting in low recoveries. Furthermore, fine particle flotation suffers from low carrying capacities and poor selectivity due to entrainment problems. (Bethell et al., 2005; Luttrell et al., 2014). In addition, the froth products containing ultrafine coal are difficult to dewater. Mechanical dewatering in general becomes inefficient with decreasing particle size due to small cake porosity and high surface area, resulting in high moistures (Hucko et al., 1988). The cost often becomes prohibitive with particles of smaller than ~45 µm (Bethell et al., 2005). Moreover, the high-moisture products are difficult to handle and incur high shipping costs and lower thermal efficiencies (Honaker et al., 2013)"

The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 1/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40 kw capacity (30hhp) Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing are presented.

The rapid decay and disfiguring of stone monuments in urban and desert rural areas has challenged conservators to protect stone surfaces from premature decay. They attempt to halt the natural process of stone decay and possibly to restore the original strength lost mostly by chemical weathering and the loss of binding cement. Ageneral solution is not possible because the physical and chemical characteristics must be considered for different stone types. The failures of stone preservation and restoration are greater in number than the cures. The need for repair of stone decay goes back to evidence of Roman replacement of decaying stone. The presence of excess water in buildings has long been recognized. Moisture tends to enter masonry from air in humid climates, a most important but often underrated factor (Fig. 1) suggesting that sealing should be the answer. Undesirable staining and efflorescence result in accelerated scaling. Today, the great variety of chemicals available to the modem conservator for sealing. consolidating, or hardening stone fall into two very different categories: surface sealers and penetrating stone consolidants, or a combination of both. SEALERS Sealers develop a tight, impervious skin which prevents access of moisture. Surface sealing has saved monuments from decay by eliminating the access of atmospheric humidity. Pressure tends to develop behind the stone surface by moisture escape. Efflorescence, crystal growth action, and freezing can cause considerable spalling (Anderegg, 1949). Flaking results when moisture is trapped behind the sealed surface. Yellowing and blotchiness are also frequently observed. The following sealants are in common use today: linseed oil, paraffin, silicone, urethane, acrylate, and animal blood on stone and adobe. Extensive cracking and yellowing has resulted soon after application. In the past many such treatments have created more problems than cures: 1. Linseed oil and paraffin have been in use for centuries. Embrittlement and yellowing occur rapidly because these are readily attacked by solar ultraviolet radiation. 2. Animal blood as paint has temporarily waterproofed adobe mud and stone masonry. The origin of blood paint has a religious background rooted in the Phoenician and Hebrew cultures. Instant water soluble dried blood can substitute for fresh blood. Winkler (1956) described the history and technique of the use of blood. 3. Silicones have proven very effective and are long lasting. In contrast, acrylates, urethane, and styrene are generally rapidly attacked by UV radiation (Clark et al., 1975). Sealing of Different Rock Types Granitic rocks have a natural porosity traced to 4.5% contraction of quartz, during cooling of the parent magma, compared with only 2% contraction of all other minerals; protection against the hygric forces may require waterproofing of granite in some in- stances. The Egyptian granite obelisk in London is an example. Soon after its relocation from Egypt to London, Cleopatra&apos;s Needle was treated, in 1879, with a mixture of Damar resin and wax dissolved in clear petroleum spirit; surface scaling became evident after half a year of exposure to the humid London atmosphere. The treatment of the ancient granite monument from Egypt has denied access of high relative humidity (RH) in London to the trapped salts inherited from the Egyptian desert and has protected the monument from decay (Burgess and Schaffer, 1952). The sister obelisk set up in Central Park, New York City, has fared less favorably because similar treatment was done too late, only after the salts hydrated and hundreds of kilograms of scalings disfigured the obelisk surface (Winkler, 1980). Surface coating of other common stones may be needed. Crystalline marble absorbs moisture from high RH atmospheres: dilation may ensue when curtain panels bow as the moisture starts to expand during daily heating-cooling cycles. A good sealer may prevent the moisture influx provided that no moisture can enter from the inside of the building. Limestones, dolomites and all carbonate rocks are subject to dissolution attack by rainwater, especially in areas where acid rain prevails (Fig. 2). The interaction of sulfates in the atmosphere with the stone can be halted by waterproofing to avoid the formation of soft and more soluble gypsum. The stone surface attack can be diminished if nearly insoluble Ca-sulfite crusts can form, instead of Ca-sulfate. Replacement of fluorite or barium compounds at the stone surface acts as a hardener, rather than a sealant. Sandstones have generally high porosity and rapid water travel can occur along unexpected routes and from any direction. Any surface sealing may do more damage by scaling and bursting than if the stone is left without treatment. Sealing of sandstones is therefore not advised at any time. Testing the efficiency of sealants: Several authors discuss waterproofing materials, silicones, urethanes, acrylates and stearates, as to their water absorption, spreading rates of water on the treated surface, water vapor transmission, resistance to efflorescence, and general appearance (Clark et al., 1975). De Castro (1983) measured the angle of contact of a microdrop (0.004 cm3) on a stone surface as characteristic of the wettability. The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

The area of flotation testing of drill-core is important in the business plan of most mining companies. Metallurgical information derived from this practice can be used to advantage in strategic decision-making. Sampling, flotation testing and subsequent Qem SCAN analysis of a mineral resource is one example of this approach. Anew resource, located in Sudbury, Ontario, is being assessed for the Sudbury Operations of Falconbridge Limited, which includes the Strathcona Mill. In this case, it was possible to improve the value of information from sampling and flotation testwork by using an improved, statistically-based test design, by sampling the resource by generic end-member ore type, and by integrating the Mineral Processing and Mineral Science disciplines into a Process Mineralogy team. In addition to producing standard metal grade and recovery information, this new approach provides more reproducible information from representative samples and flotation testing in a replicate format. Qem SCAN technology is used to produce a size by size mineral balance, including both modal percentages and liberation, from which flotation models for each ore type can be developed. As a result, a key understanding of the potential behaviour of a given ore type, if mined and then processed at the current mill operation, is gained at the 95%confidence level. The three ore types of this mineral resource were shown to have different flotation characteristics. Quantifying the mineralogy and liberation in each of the three ore types, has shown that this difference is due to changes in modal percentages of ferro-magnesium and magnesium silicate minerals such as pyroxene, talc and serpentine. Liberation across the three ore types is very similar and is therefore not responsible for variation in flotation performance.

The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

Employee involvement does not directly correlate to performance improvement. A key ingredient is the introduction of new Human Resource Systems that promote both performance improvement and employee involvement. Many organizations have tried to use employee involvement as the &apos;&apos;fixer" of performance issues-and seen their performance deteriorate further. They failed to realize that the entire human resource strategy must be connected to the goals of performance improvement and that greater employee involvement is only one tool in that strategy. So what are Human Resource Systems? These are systems that all managers use to get work done. Most of us are familiar with basics such as planning, assigning work, checking progress (auditing), completing assignments. We also commonly think in terms of staffing, training, compensation, or corrective action. All of these are human resource systems. All must be designed to support what you are trying to accomplish with your people. We call that the Human Resource Strategy. Let&apos;s examine one part of a total strategy intended to support more employee involvement at Kennecott Utah Copper-the hourly job structure. The design of hourly jobs directly affects how many employees of different capabilities are required to get the work done. It begins to answer some fundamental questions: • What are the roles and accountabilities of each employee? Do they have enough information to make decisions, to take responsibility for their work?

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem.

Rheinbraun AG, Germany, is the management company of the mining and raw materials division of RWE AG. Rheinbraun&apos;s core business and major functional area is opencast lignite mining in the Rhineland. The characteristic feature of opencast mining is continuous operation using bucket-wheel excavators, belt conveyors, and spreaders. The report gives a survey of the conveyor systems used. In addition to the general performance data of these belt conveyors, this report will deal in particular with major components, such as drive stations and individual mechanical components (e.g., conveyor belts, pulleys, gears, couplings, brakes, scrapers), as well as monitoring systems. Finally, an assessment of the conveyor systems, together with future developments, will be given.

Relationships among mining industry, society and environment have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. In the Chilean mining industry, repetitive and small spills of fuel during maintenance of machinery have been adsorbed by desert soils and sawdust to control environmental pollution. The froth flotation is the main technology to recover specific mineralogical species from sulphide ores. Flotation reagents are expensive and representing an environmental risks due to its physics properties. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility of applying bioremediation as a cost-effective alternative technology to physical-chemical treatments and to evaluate the efficacy of biosolids as foaming agents. Our results show that the bioremediation is feasible by use of the autochthonous microbial communities and biosolids could be used as new environmental-friendly organic reagents. This research discloses a sustainable bioremediation process and industrial ecology model based on these two successful cases.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is constructing a stormwater storage facility (SSF) along Interstate 35W (I35W) south of downtown Minneapolis, MN. The project will provide storm surge capacity reducing the frequency with which major precipitation events result in flooding of I35W. The design consists of six, 42-foot diameter, 90-foot deep, adjacent underground shafts providing 14.7-acre feet of storage. Construction challenges include high groundwater with variable glacial outwash deposits. Constructability and ground variability were managed using construction manager general contractor (CMGC) project delivery. CMGC provides an environment for collaboration and innovation starting in the design phase and carrying through construction. This paper provides an overview of key efficiencies and collaboration examples implemented on the I35WSSF project which were aided by CMGC delivery.

When the Henderson Project is completed in 1975, it will become one of the Free World&apos;s largest primary molybdenum producers. The Henderson Mine will be located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are currently estimated to be 303,000,000 tons with a grade of 0.49% MoS2. The mill and tailing area will be located approximately 14.5 miles from the mine in the Williams Fork Valley, which is on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Ore haulage from the mine to the mill will be by ten miles of underground railroad and 4.5 miles of surface railroad. The concentrator has been designed to mill 30,000 tons per day and will yield approximately 50,000,000 pounds of contained molybdenum per year. This paper is concerned with the tailing and water supply system for the Henderson Project and in particular the environmental considerations affecting their design.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss and dilution. The mischaracterization of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of, blasting can lead to significant financial losses due to ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorized as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run-of-mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorized as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have led to the development of innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at the Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

Block caving, unlike most other conventional forms of mining relies principally on the natural forces within the rock mass to fragment and transport the ore. Obviously, not every orebody can be satisfactorily mined by block caving. In the early stages of mine planning an attempt should be made to assess the benefits of the block caving system relative to others, and develop a reasonable mining concept that may be used to provide preliminary information to mine planners and financial specialists. It is the intention of this paper to outline some basic geotechnical parameters that are essential to: 1) Assessing the feasibility of block caving an orebody and 2) Providing semidetailed information relative to mine design based on drill hole and other data.

In 1960 the management of International Salt Company made the decision that all waste material from the Watkins Glen plant would be stored in underground salt cavities. The cavities which they contemplated using had been depleted of salt to a point where continued operation would have impaired their structural stability. Originally, the waste to be disposed of included vacuum pan bleeds, cinders, contaminated salt and sewage. It was proposed that this material, in a slurry form, was to be injected into the salt cavity through one of the abandoned wells. Brine, displaced from the cavity, was to be recovered from an adjacent well and subsequently injected into the Cherry Valley limestone, This Cherry Valley limestone which underlies a large portion of north central New York contains a connate water with high concentrations of ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and the chlorides of calcium, magnesium and sodium. A number of questions were immediately raised on various aspects of the technical feasibility of the project. Of major concern was the buildup of insolubles adjacent to the bore of the injection well. Another pertinent question was the carryover in the displaced liquor of finely-divided, mechanically-suspended particles. Criticism was leveled at the inclusion of sewage. Engineering studies were started by the company&apos;s Mineral & Mines Development Department and on April 3, 1961 a preliminary feasibility report was issued.

[Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800&apos;s among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR&apos;s) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR&apos;s were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

Column flotation and selective agglomeration are promising advanced physical cleaning processes that can be developed for preparing premium quality coal-water slurry fuel from coal fines. Such a fuel could either replace oil or natural gas in certain industrial and utility boilers or else could be burned in advanced combustors currently under development. These applications require coal cleaned to sulfur and ash contents below 258 g/GJ and 430 - 860 g/GJ (0.6 lb/million Btu and 1 - 2 lb/million Btu), respectively, to meet clean air emission requirements. A highly loaded slurry must be produced in order to avoid derating the boilers, and the total cost of the fuel must be below $2.37/GJ ($2.50/million Btu) in order to penetrate the market by the turn of the century. Achieving these technical and economic goals depend critically on the selection of suitable feed coals. This paper describes the identification and evaluation of 18 coals and final selection of six coals from different regions of the United States as potential feedstock for preparation of premium fuel. The work is being performed under a cost-shared DOE project.
