For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined, so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits, but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss that can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. In this study, two weeks of production data from a homogeneous copper (Cu) porphyry and heterogeneous manto-type Cu deposit were used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits of 20 geologists, mining engineers and ore control specialists, which were compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine varied by 3.7 percent, from $10.5 million to $10.9 million, averaging at $10.8 million. The percentage was nearly double for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9 percent, from $17.9 million to $19.0 million, averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9 percent increase) and $19.3 million (7.0 percent increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposit, respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

Various coal mine robots (CMRs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are implemented to explore unknown mines for improving the safety and efficiency of mining. It is challenging for CMRs and UAVs to achieve accurate positioning due to the absence of the Global Positioning System (GPS), poor lighting conditions, and similar geometric features in complex mine scenes. LiDAR-based localization and mapping methods are more accurate than others, while long-time running in large-scale scenarios will introduce nonnegligible cumulative errors. This study presents a semantic-aided Li- DAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with loop closure, which leverages the uniqueness of mine intersection structure to establish stable semantic loop closure. Specifically, we propose a semantic intersection descriptor of translation and rotation invariance, which encodes 3D point clouds of the same intersection from different positions and viewpoints into a unified image. By using the semantic descriptor, we can construct a constant loop constraint when the same intersection is revisited from different directions to reduce cumulative drift. We provide experimental validation using large data sets collected in two large underground mines, namely, a simulated Edgar mine deployed in ROS Gazebo and a public underground mine data set provided by ETH. Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher localization accuracy and outperforms the existing LiDAR-based SLAM strategies.

The City of Toronto is currently undertaking the design of the Black Creek Sanitary Trunk Sewer Relief Project. The Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel through shale rock of the Georgian Bay Formation and soft ground soil consisting of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits. The 20 kilometer alignment has been split into four sections of tunnel (1) the 12.9 km, 3.0 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer, (2) the 2.9 km, 1.5 meter diameter Keele Trunk Relief Sewer Microtunnel, (3) the 3.9 km, 1.8 meter diameter Jane Relief Sewer, and (4) the 0.5 km,1.5 meter diameter Combined Sewer Overflow Storage Tunnel. Additionally, one 40,000 m3 wet weather flow (WWF) storage tank and numerous WWF connection shafts are to be constructed and connected to the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer to pick up WWF from existing outfalls currently discharging to Black Creek. The anticipated cost of the project is approximately $600 million with construction of the Project’s Phase One Works, the Keele Trunk Relief Sewer and Jane Relief Sewer, scheduled to commence in 2025. This paper provides an overview of the project in terms of the anticipated geotechnical conditions, the scheme developed for design and construction of the tunnel system and the associated schedule and procurement strategy. The consideration for planning of the tunnel system, the risk-based analysis and decision-making process are presented and form the basis for selection of a precast tunnel lining support method in the rock and soft ground.

Potassic alteration domains of greenstone belt lode gold deposits are characterized by systematic partitioning between different groups of incompatible elements, such that Al, Ga, Th, U, Ti and V are decoupled from K, Rb, Ba, Cs and Tl. The former group of elements have concentrations and interelement ratios in alteration domains which reflect host rock control, implying approximately isochemical behaviour. In contrast, K, Rb, and Ba are strongly coenriched, and linearly correlated over th4ee orders of magnitude in abundance, where K/Rb = 260, and K/Ba = 40: K/Cs (-10 ) and K/T1 (-2x10 ) are also correlated, though more weakly. Lithium abundances, and Rb/Sr ratios are erratic in altered rocks. These interelement trends, collectively, are present in deposits variously hosted by ultramafic, mafic, or felsic volcanic rocks, and sediments or granitoids.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of a uranium mill site is principally an earth moving task. The task can be completed effectively and efficiently by selecting the proper earth moving equipment and using that equipment within its particular constraints for decontamination work. A considerable backlog of experience concerning earth moving equipment selection and use was acquired during the decontamination work conducted at the former Shiprock, New Mexico, uranium mill site. This experience was acquired by trial and error while decontaminating over a wide range of depths and different types of terrain. Many different types of excavation equipment were available to the Shiprock decontamination project because the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA) heavy equipment operator's school was doing the decontamination work and a variety of equipment was needed for training. The equipment is described and its general use for decontamination is discussed. Its on-the-job use for decontaminating the Shiprock millsite is presented. [EARTH MOVING/ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION AND DECONTAMINATION CONSTRAINTS] Tractor-Scrapers The most commonly used scraper is the bottom-dump type because it is highly mobile and can dig, carry, and spread loads. In this type a tractor is connected with a yoke to a scraper bowl (Figure 1). The bowl is essentially a rigid box that pivots around the rear axle, opening to the front. A hardened steel knife, or bit, is attached to the leading edge of the bowl. When scraping, the bit penetrates and forces the earth overlying the bit edge into the scraper bowl as the scraper moves forward. When the bowl is full, it is closed by lowering a closure or apron against the cutting bit. The load is dumped while moving, by raising the apron and forcing the load from the bowl with a crowd, or ejector. The height of the dumped load is controlled by adjusting the bit height when dumping. Scrapers of this type generally do not have enough power to scrape up loads unassisted. Loading assistance is generally provided by a crawler tractor that pushes from the rear against the scraper's push block. Some scrapers are made self-loading by adding an additional engine for the extra power needed for the load pick up. Another commonly used self-loading scraper uses a loading elevator (Figure 2). The elevator consists of two roller chains carrying crossbars. The elevator is rotated when scraping and the crossbars cut the earth above or in front of the bowl bit, forcing the load into the scraper bowl. No apron is used on elevating scrapers. The load is dumped by partially retracting the bowl floor and pushing with an ejector. Scrapers have some undesirable characteristics when used for decontamination work. Fundamental choices in flocculant selection often come down to the lower cost of solid grade products versus the convenience of liquids. The ideal product would be a low cost solid grade flocculant which requires minimal handling and no sophisticated dissolving equipment. Recent polymer developments have lead to the commercialization of a limited range of dry polymers that can be screw fed at controlled rates directly to process streams without the need for predissolving. Other developments include dry polymers that can be directly added to mix tanks without the need for sophisticated wetting systems. The latter will make dry flocculants especially attractive for smaller users. Examples of these new products and their application in industrial and municipal waste treatment will be provided.

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project includes a 2.7-mile, 18-ft and 10-in internal-diameter tunnel that extends from Ballard to Wallingford, two popular neighborhoods in the West of Seattle. During the TBM Main drive a 12' × 12' boulder with variable strength up to 47,000psi was encountered resulting on signicant damages to the Cutter ead. The rst part of this paper describes the design and construction of an underground recess in front of the TBM to create a safe working environment for the TBM repairs. The second part describes an injection campaign performed to seal an unforeseen water inow appeared during the excavation of the 11 Avenue Diversion Structure.

Metal producers are now suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical downturns that often occur every five to seven years. This paper uses time-trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of metal prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi's discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. The continued decline In the production of synthetic soda ash (sodium carbonate) due to high costs and associated environmental factors, has improved the world demand for natural soda ash. The largest resource of natural soda ash is the mineable trona deposits of Southwestern Wyoming. Wyoming trona, a lacustrine evaporite of Eocene Age, is mined by five producers which process over 90% of the United States and 20% of the worlds soda ash. Total world consumption of soda ash is forecast to grow 1% annually. Increased expansion into foreign market's is absorbing the domestic overcapacity.

New tunnels of significant alignment lengths such as mountain tunnels, base tunnels, as well as beneath urban centers pose unique environmental challenges. This paper highlights key environmental considerations for planning, design, construction, and operations by sharing lessons-learned from the authors' extensive project experience on these types of tunnels. Discussion of unique constraints include limited right-of- way, ventilation and emergency egress during the construction phase and revenue service, safety and security, and protection of existing structures. Practical approaches and applied innovative state-of-the-art solutions addressing distinct sustainability challenges and unique requirements are shared from US and international project examples.

With commodity prices rising again and market conditions stabilizing, the Metals Economics Group (MEG) found that most mining companies increased their exploration budgets in 2010. In the groups 21st edition of the Corporate Exploration Strategies (CES), MEG found a 44-percent rise in the estimated worldwide exploration total for 2010. MEG found that the estimated total 2010 budget for nonferrous metals exploration reached $12.1 billion, reinstating almost two-thirds of the industry?s $6 billion in cuts to exploration in 2009. Nonferrous exploration refers to expenditures related to precious and base metals, diamonds, uranium and some industrial minerals; it excludes iron ore, aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. In 2008, exploration budgets were at an all-time high of $14.4 billion. This capped a six-year run in which budgets rose. In 2009, nonferrous exploration budgets dropped 42 percent in 2009 as the global economic crisis and declining prices for almost all commodities took their toll on the industry. Metals prices - the primary driver of exploration spending - have improved markedly since bottoming in early 2009, and have traded well above their long-term trends throughout 2010. In response, major, intermediate and junior companies have all increased their aggregate exploration allocations in 2010. In particular, the significant improvement in the availability of equity financings for the juniors over the past 12 to 18 months has allowed this group to account for the largest share of the overall increase in exploration spending this year.

Based on resource studies in many developing countries, four categories of industrial clay resources are recognized as precursors to development strategies. Category I: High quality, high technology clays requiring major investment for large tonnage international markets. Category 2: Unique specialty clays requiring advanced technologies for small tonnage niche markets. Category 3: Lower technology, moderate quality clays, predominantly to supply local markets. Category 4: Low quality clays requiring little or no processing. Projects with Categories 1 and 2 clays require extended development times (green field to investment decisions) with significant pre-development investment, while projects with Categories 3 and 4 clays require shorter development timetables and lower levels of investment.

For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

The sandstone-type uranium deposits of the Gas Hills occur in the arkosic, lower Eocene Wind River formation on the southern edge of the Wind River Basin. The d S34 values of pyrite cement associated with uranium mineralization are-significantly lighter than values for syngenetic-diagenetic pyrite nodules, therefore the H2S responsible for the precipitation of the epigenetic pyrite and uraninite was produced [t]epigenetically. These values are much lighter than the values of H2S from neighboring oil fields. The presence of biogenic pyrite in meta-igneous Precambrian cobbles indicates that these cobbles are not remnants of former; vein-type uranium deposits.

This paper proposes a new approach for calibration of dual gamma-energy transmission (DU-ET) ash analyser for improved online analysis of run-of-mine lignite. An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was developed to model the relationship between the intensities measured by the scintillation counter of the analyzer and the measured ash. Samples collected from Megalopolis lignite mines were measured for their ash content by using standard laboratory methods as well as by DUET. Obtained data was divided into training, testing and validation sets. A first order Sugeno type ANFIS was used in conjunction with early stop training. The calibration performance obtained by this approach was significantly better compared with that obtained by standard calibration methods based on multiple linear regression analysis.
