Tunnel contracts often include provisions for pre-excavation probing and grouting for areas ahead of the tunnel heading. If grouting triggers are met, tunneling stops, and grouting is performed. There is substantial variation within the underground industry on what criteria are applied to the grout verification hole that is drilled post-grouting and before excavation resumes. The criteria for determination of the effectiveness should be dependent on the geology and local hydrogeologic conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present specific criteria that can be used by a practitioner to determine whether tunneling can resume or if additional grouting is required.

Latin America is in the path of economic growth characterized by increased privatization, joint-venture projects, and reduced trade barriers. Privatization is changing the industrial operating mode from Government-owned/Government-operated to a privately-owned/government-regulated regime. The establishment of joint ventures, such as in construction and management of infrastructure, energy and mining projects, and deregulated industries (electricity/gas/ telecommunications), is now a common practice in the region. These changes, coupled with the growing awareness of environmental protection issues, have led to a sincere effort on the part of the countries of Latin America to establish reasonable environmental regulations and controls (RERCs) for all industries, including mining and energy, for the benefit of present and future generations. However, RERCs require further consideration of many factors with respect to environmental, geologic, economic, and social impacts in the region. The process must find a balance between the need to sustain profitable operations and the need to adequately protect the environment. While striving to find a balance between continued industrial profitability and environmental protection, the RERCs must be scientifically sound, pragmatic, flexible, and enforceable. There has been worldwide attention focused on the environment, and international symposia have been held on such issues as global warming, water pollution, air pollution, and hazardous wastes. Organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States have performed rather extensive studies on the environment for various industries and activities, and have developed some broad general plans to address environmental concerns. This technical information is available for the asking, and should be considered a starting point for countries embarking on the passage and enforcement of their own RERCs.

INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

Twin 8.5 m diameter, 10 km long headrace tunnels under overburdens of up to 1870 m were excavated for the neelum jhelum hydroelectric project in north-eastern pakistan using two main beam gripper tunnel boring machines (tbms). Rock bursts were encountered and presented a significant danger to personnel and equipment. Micro seismic monitoring was installed to analyze rock burst characteristics and to create a database for future reference. Correlation of rock burst characteristics improved the ability to predict the likelihood, location, severity, and number of rock burst events. INTRODUCTION Anticipated increase of nuclear fuel production in the future coincides with growing concern about the occupational health risk of miners from inhaled radon decay products. As a consequence it has been suggested to even lower presently permitted exposure levels (NIOSH, 1980) and implement more stringent control on measurement programmes. Compliance with these regulations requires large investments in new or modified ventilation systems as well as in increased expenditure for staff and instrumentation for health physics operational monitoring. Since both costs are directly related to the overall ore production costs, this can have far reaching implications with regards to the economic feasibility of certain mining operations and consequently reduce estimates of low-cost minable ore reserves. In addition there is increasing evidence that the radon problem is not limited to the nuclear fuel cycle only, but can also represent a significant hazard to non-uranium miners. A key component in the cost-effective implementation of legislative control measures is the monitoring system employed. The choice of system is decisive for the total costs of installation and maintenance, manpower requirements and accuracy of nuclide determination. In the following operational specifications are defined for monitors in mining and milling environments. Different types of available instrumentation are discussed with regard to their suitability for practical radiation protection in underground mines, open cut mines and mills. ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS Underground mines Radon in the air of underground mining operations is exhaled from surrounding rock surfaces, crushed material and, to a lesser extent, from water seepage. Whilst in uranium mines radon releasing ore bodies are generally localized in distinct areas, radon sources in non-uranium mines can be very dispersed throughout the system of mine tunnels. The ventilation scheme used influences the absolute atmospheric level of radon as well as the equilibrium conditions between radon and its decay products (factor F). In uranium mines mechanical forced-air ventilation is normally the only way to achieve and maintain legally required nuclide levels. This causes the F-factor to be rather low, e.g. in French CFA-mines F is of the order of 0.2 (Francois, Pradel, Zettwoog, 1975). At the same time the fraction of unattached radon decay products (fp) can increase due to the high air velocities employed. However, it is possible to find non-uranium mines with either natural draught ventilation only or assisted on demand by forced air ventilation during special operations or climatic conditions. Thereby the F-factor is more dependent on seasonal changes of temperature differences between outdoors and mine atmosphere and work routines. As a result F can cover a wide range from 0.02 to 0.95 (Steinhäusler, 1976). The use of filters or electro-precipitators in mine ventilation systems can modify the atmospheric characteristics twofold as it generally decreases the content of radon decay products, but at the same time increases the content of the unattached fraction fp . Average concentration levels of radon decay products are mostly lower in mechanically ventilated non-uranium mines than in equally ventilated uranium mines and are below 0.3 Working Level (UNSCEAR, 1977). However, some working places in non-uranium mines, specially with only natural draught ventilation can occassionally approach maximum permissible levels as defined for uranium mines (Strong, Laidlaw, O&apos;Riordan, 1975; Snihs, 1976; Sciocchetti, Scacco, Clemente, 1981). Open pit- and surface mines Radionuclide levels of radon decay products in the atmosphere of these mines are mostly too low to represent a significant inhalation hazard for miners, ranging typically from 0.03 to 0.1 Working Level (Steinhäusler, 1976). However, personnel using airpurifying respirators or working in cabins ventilated with filtered air can be exposed to a radon atmosphere with low value for the F-factor (F [<] 0.1) and high fp-value up to 80 % (Leach and Lokan, 1979). Mills Atmospheric radon concentration in crushing, grinding, drying and packing sections depends on the radium 226 content of the ore, ore storage methods and ventilation system employed. Providing adequate ventilation ([>] 2 air changes per hour) and control of dust production radon and its decay products represent only a minor problem (Saconney, 1979). The Raman spectroscopic technique was used to study electrochernically oxidized pyrite in-situ. It was found that Raman-active sulfur oxidation products could be detected after a proper potential was applied to the pyrite electrode for a threshold period of time. There existed a minimum potential below which sulfur could not be observed. However, when the applied potential exceeded a certain limit, the intensity of the sulfur spectra decreased. The minimum potential at which sulfur could be observed changed with solution pH. For both acid (pH 2.7) and weak alkaline (pH 9.2) solutions, the minimum potential was 0.8 V/SCE, whereas for neutral (pH 6.5) solutions the value was 0.4 V/SCE. In strong alkaline solutions (pH 12.5) surface sulfur oxidation products could not be detected at any potential.

Recent advances in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) have provided a new approach to the estimation of related quality characteristics, such as heating value, ash content and moisture of coals used for power generation. The basic strategy for developing ANN and ANFIS models for the prediction of missing quality values, is to train the models using an existing quality data set and an appropriate learning method. Statistical analysis results of the estimated values, showed that ANN and ANFIS are not only more accurate than the widely used regression models, but also tends to reproduce the variability of the initial data, while regression models generate a smooth representation of reality.

Ozonation was evaluated as an alternative treatment process for leachates of municipal landfills. The study was carried out on leachate from the Fresh Kills Landfill, New York City. The leachate has strong tea color and BOD5 ranging between 90 mg/L and 130 mg/L. The average COD, TOC and NH3-N concentrations were 1800 mg/L , 550 mg/L, and 665 mg/L, respectively. The kinetics of the process were studied in a sparged batch reactor by developing concentration- time profiles for residual color and TOC. Continuous flow experiments were then carried out at two selected contact times. The process was found to be effective in the treatment of leachates for color and TOC removal.

Editor’s note: This is the first of two MINING ENGINEERING articles about the Grasberg deposit. The second, focusing on open pit mine development, will appear in the April issue of the magazine. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc. lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in the mid-1980s. Production at the open pit de- posit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold ore body is contained within a young igneous complex of dioritic composition that intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork. Irian Jaya comprises the western half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg District lies 70 km (43 miles) inland from the Arafura Sea at an altitudeof3500 to45OOm (11,480to 14,764 ft). It straddles the Papuan fold belt. This belt forms the east-west trending chain of mountains that extend the entire length of New Guinea and is the site of numerous mineral districts.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mine inspection in Canada forms one element of the enforcement of the Atomic Energy Control Act; it is under this Act that all Canadian uranium mines and mills are licensed to operate. Inspection duties are carried out by a small core staff of federal government inspectors (working for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB)) largely supplemented by provincial mine inspectors working on behalf of the AECB. Unlike most resource extraction in Canada, uranium mining is under federal jurisdiction and consequently it was the AECB who decided in 1975 that changes in the Canadian uranium mining industry, particularly its expansion and the expanding role of the mine inspector in the limiting of exposures, warranted the offering of a special radiation protection training course. The Uranium Mine Inspector Training Course (UMITC) was first conducted in 1976 at the Elliot Lake Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Subscription for the course was not limited to mine inspectors to enable union stewards, management personnel and provincial/federal labour inspectors to attend. This paper will present an outline of the course content, the format of its presentation and non-curriculum aspects of running a course of this type in uranium-producing community. The core lecturers for UMITC are drawn from the Radiation Protection and Uranium Mine Divisions of the AECB. In addition, guest lecturers are invited from universities and medical research centres together with industry professionals and government researchers. In all some twenty-four plus presentations are made over the first five days of lectures. The program topic areas, hazards, controls, measurements, record-keeping and health effects are preceded by an intensive half-day session on radiation fundamentals. TOPICS Hazards [Dust] A review of the dynamics of airborne particles including the effects of particle size, gravity and wake-turbulence on the behaviour of dust clouds. Associated topics are migrational aspects of dust particles and specific dust-generating mine operations. [Radiation] Canadian uranium mines are increasingly diverse in nature ranging from large scale low-grade underground operations in Elliot Lake to smaller high-grade open pits in Saskatchewan. Papers are presented on assessments of internal and external exposure, the metabolic pathways of ingested or inhaled radiation and the specifics of mine and mill hazards. Radiation hazards are further broken down into gamma surveys of uranium mines, radon daughter concentrations and problem areas. Controls The relationship between mining methods and the operating environment is critically important to ensuring safe working conditions. This refers to both the selection of machinery/devices, etc., and to engineering controls which are instituted to remedy problems created by new technology. UMITC examines a number of possible mining techniques, their criteria for selection and impact on the working environment. Control measures, ventilation practices and design, the need for continuous water misting and special open-pit precautions are presented. These lectures frequently conclude with suggestions for better operating guidelines for mine ventilation systems and the need for greater co-operation between the ventilation department and the underground crews. Measurements Uranium mining regulations stress the need for a high standard of exposure monitoring, statistical planning and record-keeping. [Statistics] Although many course participants are well versed in statistics, certain fundamentals are repeated and include, the concepts of mean, variance, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean. Confidence levels, decision-making based on sample statistics and statistical records are also discussed. [Dust Measurement] Dust measurement is particularly critical in the mines where the high silica content of the ore body, such as those at Elliot Lake, results in the continuous generation of dust. Sampling practices, filtration, impaction, thermal impaction and electrostatic precipitation are explained together with the methods of counting samples to determine free silica. Konimetric and gravimetric techniques for dust sampling are compared and contrasted. [Radiation Measurements] Both collective and personal dosimetry systems are used in the Canadian uranium mining industry and lectures are presented on each. Techniques and possible sources of error are discussed for a variety of radon and radon daughter measurement methods - Lucas method, Tsivoglou and modified Tsivoglou, Kusnetz, Rolle. Instant working level meters and personal alpha dosimeters are explained in terms of calibration, maintenance, readout and estimation of accuracy. INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. "INTRODUCTION This research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite with structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading and allow ingress into damaged structures within a few minutes of the mix formulation being applied. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was the discovery that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing, as water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus low W/C can be achieved. However, as there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. A commercial version of this material is currently offered as Minova’s Tekcrete Fast® product which has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize unstable ground in metal/nonmetal and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results and applications in mining and civil applications. BACKGROUND The original development of this product was to complete rapid stabilization of shock damaged structures, which falls outside the purview of normal construction and mining practices, due to the critical time issue and the nature of the damaged structure. The stabilization of damaged structures requires materials and equipment that can be rapidly deployed to place materials that have very rapid strength development. These materials need to be placeable at a distance to provide some degree of safety to the responders. In addition, the materials must be able to adhere to structural surfaces that have not been specially prepared and conditioned, and may also be highly fractured, dusty, wet, and quite possibly hot or extremely cold. The technology for the rapid delivery of large volumes of cementitious materials to vertical or even overhead surfaces currently exists. Pneumatic delivery (shotcreting) has been used in construction for over 100 years (American Shotcrete Association, 2014). Shotcreting has played a major role in structures like the Washington D.C. Metro subway system and been used in underground mining applications routinely to serve as part of the primary and secondary support system when used in conjunction with traditional roof bolts. Numerous rapid setting cements are commercially available. They are used for rapid repair of surfaces such as bridge decks, pavements, and commercial floors, as well as structural repairs of vertical and overhead surfaces. Few of these products are specifically marketed for use in shotcrete applications. The majority of rapid setting cements are based on, or at least contain, Portland cement as a principle component. Other components are added that help provide early strength, such as high alumina cement (HAC), organic polymers, chemical accelerators (which can also be added during concrete batching), and calcium sulfate hemihydrate (e.g. gypsum plaster) (Lea, 1971). Cementitious mortars prepared with some of these cements can achieve compressive strengths of 6.8 – 13.8 MPa (1,000-2,000 psi) within 1 hour. However, Portland cement mortar and concrete typically require many weeks of proper curing to reach significant levels of their ultimate strengths, even when used with set accelerators. Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation technology has been evaluated for phosphate recovery from the central Florida phosphate deposits. As expected, it was demonstrated in pilot-plant tests that the ASH system has a specific capacity about 50-100 times higher than that of a traditional flotation cell. In the case of fatty acid flotation, single-stage ASH flotation produced a recovery of 75-77% in a rougher concentrate containing 24% P2O5 In reverse flotation with amine, the single- stage ASH system produced a phosphate recovery of 98% in a cleaner concentrate containing 31% P2O5. These results are comparable with those obtained at plant operations in the Florida phosphate industry. Based on these pilot-plant results, the effects of process variables are discussed in terms of separation efficiency. Subsequently, a 6-inch ASH system was fabricated and tested in a central Florida phosphate plant for reverse flotation in the amine flotation circuit. The high capacity of the ASH system was again demonstrated for the 6-inch ASH system. A single-stage phosphate recovery of 91% was achieved with a concentrate grade of 30% P205. During plant tests, it was established that porous tube plugging, the most significant engineering problem identified, was due to the poor quality of the plant water. Possible solutions to this problem are discussed.

In virtually all jurisdictions, comprehensive environmental protection regulations or standards are in place that apply to all industries, including mining. The only other legitimate mine-permitting concern is post-mining land use (PMLU). PMLU includes all uses of land after mining as well as the ecosystems appropriate for those uses. Although flawed, the New Mexico Mining Act (NMMA) of 1993 is a PMLU-based permitting statute. It requires measures during closure that will establish a PMLU or self-sustaining ecosystem for each mine unit. PMLU-based permitting avoids prescriptive, one-size-fits-all measures and keeps permitting focused on the legitimate goal of responsible land management..

The liberation and exposure of valuable mineral grains in ore particles are of significant importance in understanding the efficiency of flotation separations. A flotation feed sample from the Kensington concentrator was scanned by micro Xray computed tomography (micro-XCT), to determine the liberation and exposure of auriferous pyrite grains. The analysis results suggest a satisfying extent of liberation for particle sizes smaller than 212 μm. Theoretical flotation recovery of pyrite for selected particle size fractions was predicted from the three-dimensional liberation and exposure analysis. The plant flotation tail was also characterized by micro-XCT to identify liberated and partially liberated pyrite particles that might not be collected into the concentrate. However, liberation analysis of the tail sample revealed that the majority of liberated pyrite was recovered in the plant flotation circuit. Trainable Weka, a machine learning segmentation approach, was compared with the Watershed thresholding segmentation for the 106 × 45 μm particle size fraction scanned at a voxel size of 1.85 μm. Improved segmentation of small particles was found using the machine learning method.

I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870&apos;s with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950&apos;s when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

This paper describes some concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine. The recording system is not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The paper is based on the philosophy that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and that it should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed and as well as a multiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

Central Water Integration Project (CWIP) Segment 5-1 is the most critical segment of a regional water supply project that transfers groundwater from Burleson County to northern San Antonio, replacing over 20% of that City’s water supply with a new source. CWIP Segment 5-1 included three tunnel reaches totaling 10,350-ft and 5 shafts that were constructed inside the City in an area known to contain large karst features. This paper describes site work used to investigate the alignment for karst features, manage potential environmental impacts, develop the contract package required for mitigation and the means and methods used to mitigate the large karst features that were encountered.
