"Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

Artificial intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Some of the techniques that are widely used today include neural networks, fuzzy logic and expert systems. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process-control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore-reserve estimation, tunnel design, long wall-stability prediction and geologic roof classification are additional applications in which neural networks have been applied successfully. In this study, a standard back propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, the performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a mean error of less than 1 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model was developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values for given coordinates. The neural network not only performed satisfactorily, but in some cases performed even better than the kriging model.

The Premier mine has been in existence for over 75 years and is closely woven into the glamour of the history of South Africa. A note on the geological formation of the diamond pipe and the gabbro gives a clearer overall picture of the mine. Mining methods for operations above and below the gabbro sill are briefly discussed. Ventilation arrangements for mining above the sill are briefly described and possible ventilation arrangements for mining below the sill are discussed in more detail. A study consist in 20 column leach tests was performed for the "EI Arco" Copper ore deposit, located on Baja California, Mexico. The main purpose was to define the basic criteria like recovery and sulfuric acid consumption, for a commercial heap leach system design, to process the oxide Copper (Chrysocola) of the deposit. Leach parameters such as, amount of sulfuric acid in the cure solution, cure technique, particle size of the material, leach solution's flowrate application, leach solution's acid strength and height of the lifts, were evaluated to choose those parameters in which the results were the best ones for that particular design.

One advantage of kriging is that it provides both an estimate of the block or point grade, and an indication of the local precision via the kriging variance. If one assumes that the estimation errors are normally distributed, then confidence intervals for the grades can be calculated. But in mining, grades are rarely normally distributed; in general, they are skew. This is particularly true for precious metals. In this paper we study confidence intervals for variables with non-normal distributions. Using a non linear geostatistical technique, the grades are transformed into their normally distributed equivalents. Confidence intervals are obtained for these normal variables, and back transformed to give the corresponding confidence intervals for the grades, for either points or blocks. This approach is applied to gold data from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa.

A self regulating helical inducer has been developed and tested for dry injection of coarse or fine solids into a hydraulic pipeline. This centrifugal pumping device has also been modified and tested for use as a boost pump in medium and long distance pipeline haulage systems. The helical inducer has been operated as an integral component of a slurry injection vehicle. This compact, low profile vehicle also includes crushing and screening components, solids feeding components, a track drive system for mobility and is run by a single operator. The helical injector and boost pump operate without speed and flow controls allowing for the practical hydraulic transport of excavated materials.

Preliminary investigations have shown that wetland-based treatment systems can be an effective and relatively inexpensive control strategy for mine drainage pollution in eastern coal mining regions. This strategy also has potential for western mining regions, although too few systems have been installed in the west to permit general evaluation of the concept for western climates. The construction of prototype systems is encouraged for some situations. Wet-land environments have the capability of removing metals by natural geochemical and biological processes, including precipitation, filtration, ion absorption, and biological uptake and accumulation. Data presented for natural wetlands receiving mine drainage show removal of iron and other metals, and high accumulation of metals in soils and plants.

INTRODUCTION The planning process for projects requiring construction of tunnels in urban environments can be highly complex and involves interaction with professionals of many disciplines. Typically the initial step in the planning process is to establish basic design criteria for the tunnel or tunnel system consistent with its intended purpose. Such criteria might include acceptable tunnel geometry, minimum and maximum slope or other associated criteria. Ideally, once the basic criteria have been established, the next step in the process might include establishing technically feasible horizontal and vertical alignment and shaft siting alternatives and developing "ball park" construction and operational cost estimates for the alternatives. Comparisons can then be made regarding the relative technical and economic merits of the alternatives and the most favorable alignment(s) are selected for further study or preliminary design. Typically the last and perhaps the most important task that is conducted during the planning stage includes identifying issues and potential problems to be addressed during the design and construction stages of the project. Many issues warrant consideration during the planning phase of a tunneling project. For the purposes of this paper, these issues can be divided into two broad categories: technical and non-technical. Important technical issues include, among others, general design criteria, geotechnical and geoenvironmental issues, and constructibility issues. Important non-technical issues include, among others, right-of-way and easement related considerations, project scheduling constraints, both short and long term environmental impacts and overall cost/benefit aspects of the project. With respect to influence on the planning process, these two groups of issues often cannot be separated completely. Shotcrete has been used for approximately 20 years to facilitate tunnel excavation through poor ground. Early examples of such usage in North America include the recuperation of the Granduc Mines access tunnel in Northern British Columbia, and similar work performed in the Carley V. Porter and Big Walker Tunnels in the United States. Mining companies such as Craigmont Mines in B.C. and Hecla Mines have used shotcrete in their workings for the past ten years. Shotcrete is now a widely utilized fool in the mining and tunnel construction industries in North America, but the accumulated experience is too limited for many to fully appreciate the capability of shotcrete to control ground movements and to understand the limitations of this tool. It is common, for instance, to use shotcrete to "bridge the gap" between rock bolt-supported and steel-rib supported ground and to avoid the use of shotcrete in water-bearing ground. Shotcrete can, and has been, used economically and practically under most severe ground conditions.

A number of concepts for basing strategic missiles facilities deep underground have been developed within the defense industry. Recently, several contracts were let by the Air Force Ballistic Missile Organization to better develop system concepts for Deep Basing and Rapid Egress of Missiles from these facilities. A particular challenge of the Deep Basing Concept is the need for the excavation of egress tunnels or shaft from the deeply based facility to the ground surface, in a rapid and reliable manner. This Paper describes a conceptual MX-Deep Basing Facility, the technical issues associated with its design and construction, and potential means for achieving rapid egress from this facility. Real growth in the economy, increasing demand for electricity, and consumer stockpiling for a possible United Mineworkers of America (UMW) strike in October made 1984 a banner year for coal. Production and consumption climbed to record heights. Precautionary purchases brought inventories close to the peak levels of early 1981 when coal miners walked out for 72 days. Production slowed in the fourth quarter after labor and management concluded negotiations without a walkout. But output in every major coal producing state showed significant gains during the year US coal production totaled 807 Mt (890 million st) in 1984. This is a 13.8% increase over 1983 output. Lower production rates, principally in Appalachia, and sustained demand in the final quarter put downward pressure on coal stocks by the end of the year. Demand All market sectors experienced greater requirements for coal in 1984. Electric utility coal consumption increased 6.3%; exports climbed 4.8%; coke plants consumed 18.9% more coal; coal requirements in the other industrial sector expanded by 11.8%; and consumption in the residential/commercial sector rose 8.1%. Domestic consumption of coal reached a record 718 Mt (791 million st) in 1984. This is a 7.4% gain over the previous consumption high of 668 Mt (737 million st) in 1983. Electric Utilities The 4.6% increase in electric power generation in 1984 was coupled with expanding coal use relative to other energy sources. This resulted in a 6.3% rise in coal consumption, totaling 603 Mt (664 million st) for the year. Solution of most engineering problems requires, in addition to vast numerical calculations, substantial use of practical judgement and expertise. With advances in applied mathematics and computer technology, the numerical aspects of problem solution have reached a considerable level of maturity. However, it is only recently that approaches like the expert systems methodology have been developed to incorporate the judgemental aspects as well. For rapid development and prototying of expert systems, expert system building tools or "shells" have become widely available. For the expert system developer, identification of the key characteristics of the problem domain and selection of the right expert system tool are of crucial importance. In this paper, the important attributes required in an expert system shell for use in the development of a mine ventilation planning expert system are discussed. These attributes are general in that most engineering problems in mining would have these requirements. Also, the results of an exercise undertaken to evaluate commercially available shells for application to mining engineering problems are presented.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an active proximity warning system called hazardous area signaling and ranging device (HASARD) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, which is worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels that are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible and vibratory indicators, and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak and on a high wall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed, and it proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

Because of their relatively low cost, carbonate rocks are desirable in abatement of air pollution by acid gases. Although many processes and types of equipment have been proposed to control or prevent the emission of acid gases, this paper considers only three: dry-limestone injection, wet-limestone scrubbing, and chemically active fluid beds. For the dry-limestone-injection process, surface area-especially from pores in the 0. 2- to 0.3-micron range-is one of the important parameters which will discriminate between less and more reactive carbonate rocks. Marls, chalks, oolitic calcites, and other fine- grained limestones show larger-than-average surface areas and better- than-average removal efficiencies. Inert chemical impurities such as silica detract from reactivity. A dolomite is not necessarily less re- active than a calcite. For the wet-limestone-scrubbing process, dissolution rate of the carbonate rock controls the differences in stone reactivity. In this process the dolomites are less reactive than the calcites. In addition, more than 90 percent of the dolomitic impurity in Fredonia white lime- stone is inert during limestone scrubbing. Dissolution rate is also a function of particle size for large-grained carbonate rocks. Fine grinding of such rocks will increase the dissolution rate to that of a fine-grained rock. Hence the requirement of high dissolution rates may be met by some grinding of fine-grained material (e. g., marl, chalk, or other limestone) or by fine grinding of coarser grained material. For chemically active fluid beds, chalks have the best capacity to absorb both SO2 and H2S. However, most chalks are probably unsuitable for fluid beds because of high attrition rates. Because dolomites are generally more reactive than calcites with both SO2 and H2S, a dolomite would be the feed material of choice for a chemically active fluid bed.

In this paper the principal theories used to design roof bolting systems are presented and discussed. Then the characteristics of various types of roof bolts are presented and finally the interaction between rock and roof bolt characteristics on choice of roof bolts is discussed. Theories can be considered design tools which may or may not be appropriate for a specific situation. It is good for a design engineer to have a number of such tools available and also important that he understand their good features as well as their limitations. Hence, some of the principal theories and classification systems used for design of roof bolting systems are discussed first.

The quality of cleaned products from coal preparation plants is often variable due to natural fluctuations in the washability characteristics of the plant feed. To combat this problem, many modern plants have installed on-line analyzers that provide feedback for the real-time control of product quality via the adjustment of circuit cutpoints. Unfortunately, optimization studies show that this approach may actually lead to increased losses of saleable coal. This paper discusses the problems associated with the real-time manipulation of circuit cutpoints and suggests alternative modes of operation that are better suited for plant optimization. A case study involving an eastern U.S. coal plant has been used to compare the economic impacts of these different approaches for plantwide control.

Consolidation grouting from the surface prior to mining a shaft is commonly performed to reduce groundwater inflows to a manageable rate. This paper describes the inflow reductions obtained within dolomite and limestone formations at several shafts and chambers due to grouting programs for the Milwaukee Water Pollution Abatement Program. The resulting inflow reduction factors are compared to results reported in the literature for other projects. Post-grouting pump tests are also evaluated as an aid in grouting assessment. Important considerations for estimating shaft inflows from pump test results are discussed. These considerations include loss of grouted mass during mining and influence of blasting and rock features on grouting effectiveness. This information should be helpful to design engineers and contractors who need to estimate inflows after pre-excavation consolidation grouting has been performed.

This paper discusses the application of Integrated Inertial/GPS technology for position determination of earthmoving equipment in an open-pit mine. Different GPS augmentation methodologies are introduced and discussed. Principles for the operation of the Applanix POS MC (Position and Orientation System for Machine Control) are also presented, together with test results conducted at the Twin Creeks Newmont mine, using the POS MC and Caterpillar’s CAES (Computer Aided Earthmoving System).

Floc properties such as density, size, size distribution, porosity and shear strength govern the effectiveness of flocculation as a process for solid-liquid separation. Floc characteristics desired for removal of suspended solids by sedimentation or filtration, for example, are known to be different. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate floc density using a simplified procedure and determine the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the density of floes obtained. A brief discussion of techniques employed to measure the shear strength of flocs and the effect of various parameters on the floc strength is also presented.

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, the development of tunnel boring machines has revolutionized the tunneling industry. The general structure of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be described as a multi-component system. To achieve high performance rates, machine elements have to perform reliably. Performance losses and interruptions of the construction process should be prevented or at least, reduced to a minimum. In order to achieve high advancing rates, cutting tools must be in good condition at any time. Furthermore, failure of individual tools might result in increased and faster wear of remaining structural components. For this reason, maintaining and replacing cutting tools is crucial to prevent project delays due to insufficient boring performance. Precise prognoses concerning the prevailing geology are infeasible and thus, efficient scheduling of maintenance actions is challenging. The intention of this work is to analyze different approaches of TBM maintenance in soft ground. Different strategies are analyzed by the use of a simulation approach. Cutting tool condition is regarded as performance limiting factor. The maximum operation time of the cutting tools is determined using the “Soil Abrasivity Index”. A case study serves to show the effects of different maintenance strategies on total project duration. SCHEDULING OF MAINTENANCE ACTIONS Scheduling maintenance actions of single and multi-component systems concerns numerous fields of industrial production. Concentrating on mechanized tunneling in soft ground, cutting tool maintenance represents the most common reason for intermission of advance (Köppl 2014). In literature, time-based and condition-based maintaining techniques are widely discussed. The following section outlines the principles of time- and condition-based policies. Furthermore, examples for their applications in recent research are given. Time-Based Maintenance In general, the time-based maintenance approach assumes that the failure behavior of the system components is predictable. Maintenance actions are scheduled according to predefined intervals (e.g., hours, days, weeks). A detailed analysis of preventive repair times or interval forms the basis for maintenance decisions. For this approach, an adequate quantity and quality of data is fundamental. Numerous studies deal with the analysis of time-based maintenance for production equipment. In fields of mechanized tunneling, unplanned machine downtimes restrict the applicability of time-based maintenance approaches. Thus, this paper mainly focuses on condition-based maintenance."
